Project, Ben Nicholson, 1943, Minneapolis Institute of Art: Paintings
white, off-white, grey and tan composition of overlapping squares, rectangles and two circles Subtle differences in color and layering make this work complex, though at first glance it may look simple. Creating a balanced composition with so few elements is challenging, but Nicholson succeeded. The collage’s muted tones were inspired by T. E. Lawrence’s account of his time in the Arabian desert during World War I, on which the film Lawrence of Arabia was based. Born to painter parents, Nicholson followed in their footsteps, pursuing art from a young age. He had his first solo exhibition when he was twenty-eight. Among his friends and colleagues he counted Henry Moore, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Piet Mondrian, and Constantin Brancusi. Works by them are on view in nearby galleries. Size: 10 3/8 x 12 9/16 in. (26.35 x 31.91 cm) 16 7/8 x 20 13/16 in. (42.86 x 52.86 cm) (outer frame) Medium: Oil, graphite and paper collage on multiple boards, within the artist's constructed frame

In the footsteps of Barbara, Ben, Henry, and Ivon... In September 1931, Church Farm in the Norfolk seaside village of Happisburgh hosted Barbara Hepworth and a group of her artist friends: Henry and Irina Moore, Ivon Hitchens and Douglas and Mary Jenkins. Ben Nicholson joined them and during this holiday he and Barbara fell deeply in love. Both were married to other people: Ben to Winifred, who was back home caring for their three children, and Barbara to Jack Skeaping, who joined for two days and left after he realised Barbara’s attentions were elsewhere. ‘We talked and walked, we bathed and played cricket, then we worked and danced’ wrote Barbara. Ben recalled how ‘we all took our clothes off and played cricket and other games on the sand.’ Happisburgh is only 5 miles from my Mum’s home, so I always think of this seminal art holiday, which led to one of the most important relationships in Modern British art - Barbara and Ben moved in together in Hampstead and subsequently to St Ives. Church Farm hasn’t changed much: it’s surrounded by a flint wall, and outbuildings where Barbara and Henry carved iron stones from the beach. It looks across to Happisburgh church (which can be seen in their photo albums in the Tate Archive) and to Happisburgh lighthouse. Years ago I nearly wrote my MA dissertation about this trip, so I’m currently enjoying Caroline Maclean’s book Circles & Squares, which opens with an account of this holiday. (Oh and a note, dear Reader, unlike these free spirits, I kept my clothes on) #bennicholson #barbarahepworth #ivonhitchens #happisburgh #norfolk (at Happisburgh, Norfolk) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPjBDxSFoei/?utm_medium=tumblr

Art - Ben Nicholson’s white relief 1935 Ben Nicholson was, with his second wife Barbara Hepworth, a leading figure in the international modern movement in Britain. With artists in continental Europe and North America such as Mondrian, Moholy-Nagy and Calder they worked together to achieve and promote an art that was abstract, synthesised with architecture and design. In defiance of the increasingly antagonistic nationalism engulfing Europe, position was explicitly internationalist and utopian. The compositional quietude of Nicholson’s white reliefs provided an aesthetic model for a possible social harmony . . . . . It’s very heartening to see that even a masterful master of precision like Ben Nicholson knocks out the occasional wibbly-wobbly line. Superstars are no different to the rest of us really - they just have bigger sheds. __________ #superstarsheds #bennicholson #nicholson #stives #tate #tatemodern #modernart #minimalart #abstractart #minimalism #stivesart #britishart #drawing #painting #gallery #museum #sketching #wobbly #wobblylines #art #artist (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZz3X62Lfc3/?utm_medium=tumblr
