Herbie Hancock feat. Jaco Pastorius – Live In Chicago ’77
“Herbie Hancock featuring Jaco Pastorius, Live at Ivanhoe Theater, Chicago Ill. on February 16th 1977. By 1977 Herbie Hancock was firmly established as America’s leading purveyor of jazz-funk. This superb performance finds him playing with Weather Report’s legendary bassist Jaco Pastorius, as well as Bennie Maupin (tenor sax, bass clarinet) and James Levi (drums). Broadcast on the local WXRT-FM, it offers a setlist anchored in his Head Hunters era, but also offers a track from Maupin’s superb Slow Traffic To The Right album. With “Hang Up Your Hang-Ups” and band intro’s at the start.” – Rick Ransom/AllMusic.

🎶✨️#ArtIsAWeapon #HerbieHancock's jazz-funk masterpiece "Head Hunters" was released FIFTY years ago today (October 26, 1973).
Tumblr media
Reposted from @herbiehancock “It’s hard for me to believe that 50 years later this record is still so widely celebrated. I really appreciate that the younger generation has discovered and embraced so much of my music, that was recorded and released so long ago. It’s encouraging to me to see a growing number of young people coming to my concerts and being fans of my music” - HH, Oct, 2023

Herbie’s twelfth studio album was released October 26, 1973 on Columbia records and was recorded at Wally Heider Studios and Different Fur Trading Co. in San Francisco. Produced by Herbie and David Rubinson, the album features performances from Bennie Maupin on saxaphone, Paul Jackson on bass guitar, Bill Summers on percussion and Harvey Mason on drums. These collaborators would go on to form the band The Headhunters. Head Hunters peaked at number 13 on the Billboard 200 and was added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress.

I’ve come across this album several times in various record stores, but it was always the blue labeled UA that seemed overpriced, and I was happy with listening to my CD until this past Saturday when my daughter and I decided to visit @HRRecords in DC. This was only my 2nd time being in the store, so I wasn’t familiar with the section on the far-left wall as you walk in. Once over there I had to put several records back or my bill would have exceeded $200 bucks easy. “Caramba!” by #LeeMorgan was recorded on May 3, 1968, at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Lee on trumpet, #BennieMaupin on tenor, #CedarWlaton on piano, #ReggieWorkman on bass and #BillyHiggins on bass. This is a Liberty copy that’s in excellent shape with the “Van Gelder” stamp in the dead. I felt lucky to land this because I’ve only seen overpriced blue labeled UA’s in the past. I did notice that my CD had 1 extra song on it “A Baby’s Smile”. The sound quality like with all #BlueNoteRecords Liberty’s is flawless. My favorite tune on this session has always been the last song on side 2 “Halen’s Ritual” written by Lee for his then girlfriend Helen Morgan the woman who would eventually murder him some four years later. In the documentary “I called Him Morgan” Helen explained that she had a certain way of putting on lotion and Lee referred to it as “Helen’s Ritual”. I also always wondered about the tune “Suicide City” and it’s title and after finally getting a chance to read the liner notes on Saturday, Lee explained, “Well, New York is that way for many people, you know. It can make you or break you.” I would love to see @BlueNoteRecords add this to their #TonePoets Series someday. But until then this copy will do me just fine. Have a BLESSED rest of the week. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #CrateDigging #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection #OnMyTurtable #MusicaJazz #JazzMan #JazzArt #JazzLife #3rdStreetJazz #Jazz #JazzPhotography #JazzPhoto #JazzArt #JazzLegend #JazzLife #MusicaJazz https://www.instagram.com/p/CTw4x3VgpQw/?utm_medium=tumblr

I’ve always wondered if Miles Davis’ “Kind of Blue” is considered the greatest selling jazz album in history then where does “Head Hunters” stand? “Chameleon” was the most popular song on the radio after it’s release being played on every local R&B station in the Philly area. I was only 14 at the time, but I remember listening to “Watermelon Man” for the first time and trying to compare it to the original. Because my Father was an avid Jazz listener and his album collection was insane to me back then, he didn’t have any Jazz-Funk Fusion in his collection. He was not a fan of any type of Fusion and he thought Herbie’s music should be played on Temple’s Jazz station WRTI and not WDAS which was the popular R&B station in the Philadelphia area. Recorded in September 1973 at the Wally Heider Studios in San Francisco, California featuring #HerbieHancock on keyboards, #BennieMaupin on reeds, #PaulJackson on bass, #HarveyMason on drums and #BillSummers on percussions, this album was a commercial and artistic success peaking at number 13 on the Billboard 200 and the first jazz album to sell over a million copies. This copy was purchased in Okinawa, Japan sometime in 1981. When I arrived on The Rock as what we called Oki back then I had a pretty decent collection of albums purchased in the mid to late 70’s that had very thin vinyl and the card stock the album covers were made of were even thinner. This album’s sound quality was unbelievable back then. Very quiet. I know a lot of folks frown on Japanese reissues, but not me. I tried to replace everything in my collection with a better Japanese version. I just order the Acoustic Sounds 45 RPM copy this morning though. I heard it was a gatefold copy as well. I do have a Speakers Corner copy in my collection as well. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #jazzjunkie #vinylcollector #vinyllove #recordoftheday #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #3rdStreetJazz #JazzRecordoftheDay #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz https://www.instagram.com/p/CTM0O0fLb3Y/?utm_medium=tumblr

Had quick stop at my favourite local @black_plastic_records in Dortmund, Germany. Found nothing for my 1967 collection but was super happy to find the amazing Bennie Maupin on ECM from 1974 feat. Herbie Hancock (it's a 1977 repress but anyway), Nina Simone from 1971, Dexter Gordon on Blue Note from 1966 feat. Bobby Hutcherson (my favourite vibraphone player!) and the Gary Burton Quartet from 1968 (another great man on the vibes). Going to be jazzy evening! PS: even if this blog is mainly about 1967, please keep in mind that it doesn't matter when, where and how an album was released. It's all about the music ;-) #vinyl #recordcollector #recordcollection #vinyljunkie #ninasimone #garyburton #benniemaupin #herbiehancock #ecm #ecomrecords #dextergordon #bobbyhutcherson #bluenoterecords #bluenote (hier: Black Plastic in Concert)
