“Winter in America” by #GilScottHeron was recorded in September and October of 1973 at D&B Sound in Silver Spring, Maryland featuring Scott-Herron on piano and vocals, #BrianJackson on piano, flute and vocals, #DannyBowens on bass and #BobAdams on drums. It was released in May of 1974 on #StrataEastRecords after Scott-Heron had a contract dispute with his former label Flying Dutchman. As the great #GeorgeToliver recalled, #StanleyCowell said, “Hey man, Gill Scott-Heron wants to do a record.” And Toliver replied, “Gil who?” Toliver hadn’t been paying attention to what Gil was doing even though “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” became an iconic thing at the time and Scott-Heron being this spoken-word guy. He had left Bob Thiele’s Flying Dutchman label over a publishing rights dispute. Strata East at the time was a small Black owned record labeled created by George Toliver and Stanley Cowell that allowed musicians to keep 85 percent of their return while the label would only keep 15 percent. It was a label that no longer allowed producers to rip artist off like they had in the past. Brain Jackson recalls, “We had $4,000 burning a hole in our pockets, well that’s enough to produce a record!” So, they made “Winter in America”. They found out in DC that there was a new label being run by black musicians. Strata East didn’t anticipate the album being such a success, but after its release the legendary New York DJ #FrankieCrocker started playing “The Bottle” on his show and it blew up. That song was in such demand that everybody started requesting the single, but it was only on the album. They had never pressed a single before. At the time some of the albums on Strata East didn’t even sell 1,000 copies and now here comes this one album that was getting orders of 10,000. The rest is history. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #jazzjunkie #vinylcollector #vinyllove #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #CrateDigging #Jazz #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection https://www.instagram.com/p/CTfLuP2rlgx/?utm_medium=tumblr

From the sacred #StrataEast vaults!! This #SonnyFortune LPs boldly jumps from the speakers, they knew what they were doing. Sadly someone is sitting on the catalogue & not doing reissues. Very good + "Long Before Our Mothers Cried", with #StanleyCowell & # CharlesSullivan in good + jacket, $30. (at Normal's Books & Records)

The Heath Brothers / Marchin’ On! #AlbertHeath: drums, lead flute, african double reed #JimmyHeath: flute, tenor & soprano sax #PercyHeath: baby bass, bass violin #StanleyCowell: accostic piano & mbira (thumb piano) Produced by #JimmyVenable #cd #cdcollection #coverart #albumart #album #nowplaying #nowspinning #vinyl #vinylcollection #musiccollection #lp #jazz #spiritualjazz #contemporaryjazz #StrataEastRecords #BombaRecords #1976 #宮古島 #coffee #コーヒー #rip (宮古島) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7qBJL8JAJr/?igshid=1pw5nepdn7323

With few giants of the vigorous and pithily bluesy hard-bop style of the 1950s and 60s still active, the late-career resurgence of Charles Tolliver – a hard-bopper of real character who worked with drums legend Max Roach and saxist Jackie McLean – is big jazz news. The 72-year-old Florida-born trumpeter/composer, a lithe and youthful figure in a rakish bopper's beret, played one night at Ronnie Scott's with his Music Inc quintet, including young New York pianist Theo Hill, and former Herbie Hancock drummer Gene Jackson.
Shouldering a gig's entire horn-playing role alone is no pushover for a trumpeter at any age, and the sidemen's practice of opening solos stealthily and building them to a roar acquired a formulaic drift – so the gig inevitably lacked the punch of Tolliver's explosive big-band show at the 2007 London Jazz festival, but the canny twists of his themes are always strikingly his own. On brisk, flinty pieces such as Copasetic and Blues Soul, Tolliver fired off taut solos of buzzing trills and abrupt squeals (sometimes reminiscent of Miles Davis's staccato late-60s phrasing). And while he preferred the rhythm section's pressure over the unsupported spaciousness of slow tunes, his beautiful ballad themes...
