The gif-making scene has changed a LOT since I last dabbled in it, so I'm behind the times on methods for sourcing footage (among other things), but I recently renewed my interest in the character I intended to use this FC for, so I managed to find a handful of HQ clips on YouTube and threw some gifs together. Might as well share with the rest of Tumblr in case anyone else wanted Gísli in this role. Coloring is psd #1 from @themaesters though I apologize if it looks a little odd in my application of it. I only barely know what I'm doing, okay?

Watching Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands, so you don't have to.

DISCLAIMER: I'm just poking fun. I'm not really familiar with the saga.

BEST CHARACTER:

Beowulf:RTTS aired on 2016, five good years after the first episode of Game of Thrones, amidst what I would call "fantasy renaissance". The ending result is less than satisfactory on all accounts. The show only aired for one season, and it lost it's relevancy (if it ever had one) quite fast.

Let's hop into episode one (all episodes are available on YouTube)

In the opening scene, Beowulf and his father are galloping away from the Mudborn, until the inevitable moment the horse falls down. The father stands to fight and instructs baby Beowulf to run - the father takes down one of the two Mudborn, but he is knocked out by the other one.

The Mudborn seeks baby Beowulf, who by that time has acquired a Skyforge Steel Axe, and in true Dragonborn fashion jumps off a cliff and plants the axe between the Mudborn's eyes.

Thane Hrothgar of Herot shows up with a bunch of his men and takes young Beowulf with him.

NOTE: THE EPISODE HAS A LOT OF FLASHBACKS. LIKE A LOT. One particular scene is cut in 7 (not accurate, didn't actually counted them) different smaller flashbacks.

Fast forward to adult Beowulf and his new friend Brecca who I will sometimes refer to as Not-Jaskier, because he has the vibes of Jaskier, despite not being a bard. Beowulf is back in Herot, because he has heard Hrothgar is dying. I would describe Herot as the perfect Skyrim setting; a "city" with no walls, not enough houses (and residents subsequently) and barely anything of note other than the Thane's Palace(?)/Longhouse(?)/Hall(?). In other words, it's Riverwood but worse.

Everyone is side eyeing Beowulf. Before they enter Herot, Beowulf says something about having parted badly with Hrothgar, so I understand the looks. Upon arriving at the HALL'S gates he is stopped by the guard and says that he can't enter.

Beowulf replies that this guard was slow 20 years ago, he would be even slower now.

And this is the first wtf moment, barely 10 minutes in the episode. Kieran Bew (adult Beowulf actor) looks about in his mid 30s, early 40s, but considering that everyone has recognized him so far, it means Beowulf left Herot while a fully formed adult. But later in the episode, we learn through the flashbacks that Beowulf was still Baby Beowulf when he was exiled.

Which means, that they exiled a 15 year old and could still recognize him 20 years later. Not to mention that the flashbacks give you the impression that Beowulf was exiled pretty soon after he was brought to Herot. I mean, HOW DO THEY EVEN KNOW/REMEMBER WHAT HE LOOKS LIKE?

Anyway, that's as fucked up as Bran entering Hodor's past self to make him Hodor kind of mumbo jumbo.

I like Elvina, and her relationship with Slean to an extent - they have this star-crossed lovers love story, where Reeta, Slean's mother would never allow him to be with a commoner.

Also Abrecan (Not-Ulfric) is a cool character.

Not-Jaskier is the "I fucked your mom" type and I'm living for it, he's one of the more charismatic dudes in the show.

I have a soft spot for Slean, because Ed Speleers (I'm one of the 10 people to have watched Eragon and enjoyed it, kill me)

I CAN'T, THE FORTIFICATION OF HEROT ENDS BY THE GATES, WAS IT BUILD BY TODD HOWARD?

Elvina being chased by the Mudborn, who is chased by Beowulf, who is chased by Slean, lets us in the know about the twist that's coming later.

Elvina's rescue is the most satisfying scene, because Beowulf gets a little bit tossed around.

Interviewer: Slean is very angsty and frustrated when we meet him. Do we discover any new layers to him as well? Ed: I hope so. I suppose that depends on how well I play him, really. But I think characters – good characters always have some sort of light and dark anyway, and I don’t think it’s a clear-cut case of him being a bad guy. Yes, he’s angsty, but he’s got a lot to be angry about. [x]

If my fellow Willow fans are looking for something new to watch, you might want to check out Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands (2016).

There aren't a ton of female characters, but the ones who are there are pretty cool (so far, I'm on ep 2), and if I remember correctly from my first watch in 2016, they get some neat stuff to do.

But the reason I draw your attention is! Joanne Whalley plays Rheda, Hrothgar's widow. She's determined to keep power for herself, so she's pretty wily and great.

Beowulf from Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands and Guinevere from Starz Camelot

DISCLAIMER/NOTES: The characters don't belong to me, I'm just having fun. This fic is going to be six parts, I'll tag them as #katerinacrossovers and #katerinabeowulfxguinevere. The title comes from the TS song "peace". References to TESV: Skyrim.

PART III

Nightfall was upon them and the funeral pyre would soon be lit. The peasantry had gathered, eager to hail their Thane for the last time, and help him reach the Hall of Warriors by praising his name while the flames would engulf him.

Beowulf was never much of a believer; the world was a vast place - he traveled a good deal of it, and saw that every region and every race believed in different gods that the one he was raised to. But Hrothgar wholeheartedly believed in his gods.

"Tonight," Thane Rita spoke loudly, so everybody in the crowd could hear her. "We bid our last goodbye to Hrothgar, Thane of Heorot. He was a brave and honorable man. A great warrior and a strong leader."

"Hail Hrothgar!" The crowd said in unison.

Rita went on. "Tonight, he enters the Warrior's Hall! Tonight, he shall feast with the gods!"

"Hail Hrothgar!" Once more,

"Tonight, the flames of his fire shall reach for the sky! Hail Hrothgar! Hail Hrothgar! Hail Hrothgar!"

It was almost too much to bear for Beowulf; to be absent all these years, only to return and see that the man who took him under his wing was already dead. "Damn Rita and her schemes," he thought.

Slean, as Hrothgar's true born son would be the one to light the pyre. Guinevere stood by her mother, solemn looking. The headpiece that crowned her hair gleamed in the light of the torches, but shadows concealed her face.

That's when Beowulf noticed the man that stood next to her; he looked to be around Beowulf's age, if not older, and he was tall and lean with a stern expression on his face. He carried a sword in a sheath on his side. The silver-white handle of it resembled that of a southern knight. It was very uncommon that one of their kind would be so far up north.

Curious, he made his way to them. Hopefully, Guinevere would explain to him.

"Guinevere," he said, lowering his head in respect. "Are you alright?" He offered his hand to her.

She hesitated. Glancing at the knight and back to him, she eventually refused his hand. "Beowulf," she said with a nervous smile. "I am quite well, thank you."

The man looked at her expectantly, raising one eyebrow at her. Guinevere stumbled over her words.

"Is he intimidating her somehow?" The thought crossed him mind, unbidden. Beowulf reached for his dagger, not pulling it out yet.

She seemed to notice it and hasten to explain.

"Let me introduce you to my husband, Ser Leontes of Camelot." She said, leaving Beowulf starstruck - a husband she hasn't mentioned at all to him. "And this is Beowulf, once my father's ward."

The knight inclined his head in acknowledgement with a smirk on his face.

Beowulf snapped out of his shock. "You are a long way from Camelot, my friend," he said, gathering his wits.

"Indeed I am. I do not yet quite understand why my lady wife insists on living here instead of the south, but I hope in time she changes her mind." Ser Leontes said. Guinevere gave him a dark look he didn't notice.

Beowulf chuckled. "Good luck trying to convince a daughter of the True North to live anywhere but there," he said. "Auroras aren't visible south of Whiterun, and a true northerner cannot live away from their light for long."

"And have you reached that conclusion yourself? Are you well traveled?" He asked, half amused.

Resisting the urge to punch him, Beowulf gave his reply. "Aye. I have been as far north as Icewind Dale and Solitude, and as far east as the Iron Mountains. I have also passed by Camelot, but the southernmost place I have been to is the Shores of Old Gondor and as for the east, I have traveled to the elven forests and beyond them, to the bountiful Reach and the Citadel."

The knight's lips became a thin line. "You lead quite an adventurous life, Beowulf. What is it you do?"

Guinevere watched them in silence.

"I hunt monsters of all kinds," he simply said.

This time the knight laughed. "And which is the most evil of the monsters that you've slain?"He asked mockingly.

Beowulf narrowed his eyes - the bastard deserved to be stabbed. He tightened the grip on his dagger contemplating if the knight was worth the trouble, but Guinevere caught his eye: she was silent still, but with her eyes she implored him not to do it, not give in to the worst instincts.

He let the dagger be.

"Humans," he said and walked away, but not before giving Guinevere a last look. She looked relieved and thankful.
