photoshop!! i like making gifs and edits and such :) i've also been writing a lot more recently which is crazy, i haven't felt this inspired or productive in forever :'D thank you DA lol 🩷

i am also v much a webtoon enjoyer (my all-time fave is "trash belongs in the trash can!" but i'm currently v invested in "nevermore," "i'm the queen in this life," "sisters at war," and "momfluencer"!), but i'll read manga (tatsuki fujimoto my GOAT) and comics (invincible also my GOAT)

6. if you work, what's your profession?

i write internal software documentation which means it's architectural, high-level design stuff... not so much code-specific, but the reasoning behind why software components are organized the way they are. it's not very fun, mostly mind-melting... i work closely w engineers and it's kind of a toss-up whether they'll be nice/patient or think i'm stupid lol

but my brain now contains so many company secrets :^) if you ever have any questions about data storage/virtualization i can possibly help lol

7. if you could have any job you wish, what would you have?

funny story—i applied for grad school, and i've been accepted to an english m.a. program that starts this fall!!! 🥹 we'll see where i go w that, but i'll likely enter education!

uhh i suppose BG3 LOL i beat honor mode twice! 🎉 (i'm still trying to figure out how DA works 🤔 DA2 hard mode is chill idk if i'd ever do nightmare tho 😬)

ok it's not rly a "hate" thing but it does irk me when i see fandom claims/arguments that don't cite specific quotes/screenshots/instances lol (the english major in me activates and i am consumed by the thought "🚨‼️ where do you see this in the text 👁️👁️🫵" LOL)

the grief 😂🖐️ it creeps up on me! almost cried in my cubicle multiple times this week. haha.

receiving is probably words of affirmation? giving is probably gifts, i like making silly things for my bestie (eg. fenris keychain lol) and finding weird stickers for my brother 🤡

apparently very friendly, outgoing, and extroverted! i would just run up to my fellow kids and yap at them?! i do nooot do that anymore lol

english/literature!!

oh man, i was so bad at science, especially biology/chemistry... i could scrape by in physics bc i was decent at math, but it was still awful...

16. what's your best/worst character trait?

worst...??? according to my last annual review, i need to be more confident in the workplace LOL 💀 + sometimes i let my anxiety get the better of me... i think that's just a lifelong struggle thing though, but i know i can improve to be a better friend and such 💪

best... multiple reviews from mom-aged women say that i am a "nice" and "sweet" person so hopefully at least that means i can leave a good first impression haha

17. if you could change any detail of your life right now, what would it be?

i'm not a huge fan of what-if-ing personally, but i do wish i were on vacation 😆

18. if you could travel in time, who would you like to meet?

i'm currently very curious about my paternal grandparents... it's hard for me to conceptualize why they got married... and how my dad grew up... i guess i would want to witness some of that??

Blatantly Partisan Party Review II (federal 2025): Australian Christians

Running where: Senate in NSW and WA, plus ten House divisions in WA

Prior reviews: federal 2013, VIC 2014, federal 2016, federal 2019, federal 2022, WA 2025

What I said before: “they want their own theological views made into the law of the land. Their acknowledgement that other religions can be practiced freely in Australia is begrudging. They seem more extreme than ever in the narrowness of their vision for society.” (WA 2025)

What I think this year: The Australian Christians splintered some 14 years ago from Fred Nile’s Christian Democratic Party and, as the CDP was deregistered in 2022, they have now outlasted it. Their heartland is WA, as that was one of the two CDP branches that originally split to form the party (Victoria was the other), and they have maintained a small but consistent presence in the west. Although the WA Electoral Commission is yet to declare the results of the recent election for the WA Legislative Council, it looks certain that the Australian Christians have won their first ever parliamentary seat. (This paragraph will be updated when the WAEC declares the results in the next few days)

A decade ago, Christian fundamentalist parties of varying confessions formed one of the most common genres of micro-party. Thankfully, this desire to legislate a very particular worldview to apply to everybody has waned, but we are still stuck with the Australian Christians. Worse, they have got more extreme over time.

Nothing has changed since my WA election review a few weeks ago: this party opposes women’s bodily autonomy, they are transphobes, and they oppose “coercive vaccine mandates” (coded language for antivax weirdos). When it comes to education, they want more chaplains in school, despite our secular education system suggesting we ought to have none in the public system at all, and they promote home-schooling, which is often an avenue for religious fundamentalists to under-educate and under-socialise their kids. In less obviously religious areas, their economic policies favour the sort of small business owner who is annoyed that they might have legal responsibilities and who bleats about the sorts of “red tape” that actually stops them taking advantage of employees or clients.

I also take umbrage with their name, despite not being a believer of any faith. This party's political or theological positions do not represent all or even most Christians in Australia. Maybe if you're a socially conservative evangelical Protestant you will find your faith embodied in this party, but those from other denominations will at best feel like a square peg in a round hole. Believers who adhere to more liberal wings of Christianity will find this party about as objectionable as I do.

Recommendation: Give the Australian Christians a low preference in the House of Representatives and a weak or no preference in the Senate.

The ethics of tapping into the same school community as freelance yoga teachers

Introduction 

Recent events have caused me to reflect upon the ethics of tapping into the same school community as existing freelance yoga teachers. In particular, imagine a scenario in which there is an established yoga teacher at a school and a new kids’ yoga company approaches the school community with a new offer of yoga. It could also be the other way around where said school approaches the new kids’ yoga company. In both scenarios neither the school nor the new kids’ yoga company have communicated or collaborated with the existing teacher of the opportunity for further work.

Obviously, we cannot dictate how a school manages itself, nor offer advice on what external providers it should work with. We also recognise that as kids’ yoga teachers we will often be tapping into the same school community as each other. This introduces the possibility of conflict and competition as well as the opportunity for collaboration and sharing with each other. We also acknowledge that nobody owns the yoga work in schools.  

So, exactly what are the ethics that are at play here? What business model should we follow? The capitalistic patriarchal competitive model of supply and demand (a model based on using resources without consideration or sensitivity)? Or do we develop and use a model that is more in line with yoga ethics (which is more concerned with respecting and valuing resources and communities)? 

Existing research into this area  

I took to searching the net to find out what other articles have been written on this topic. I found loads of articles on the ethics of using other teacher’s lesson plans, taking students away from studios, using sequences learnt on courses/workshops, copying a teacher’s style or language they use and so forth. Granted there are many parallels that can be drawn from these articles, and which can be adapted to thinking about yoga in schools but nothing really specific to this area. I did, however, find the following article - “The Ethics of Sharing Another Yoga Teacher’s Work”, by Kara-Leah Grant* - which I thought was relevant to this topic and will help us develop ethical sensitivity as yoga teachers. 

Competition vs collaboration: whose responsibility is it?  

Let’s begin by considering who is responsible for communicating that there is an upcoming teaching opportunity to the inhouse yoga teacher. Is it the school? Granted the school does bear some of the responsibility but we as yoga teachers study the principles of ahimsa, asteya and aparigraha, from the yamas of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and as such have responsibility to do our best to uphold them. These are the principles of non-harming, non-stealing, non-greed or making sure what we do and how we do it is in harmony rather than harm, not taking what is not offered or more than we need.  

Does this then mean that the majority of responsibility lies with the new yoga company to communicate and collaborate with the established teacher so that they feel valued and on-board with sharing the work? This is potentially a sensitive area that requires tact and transparency. Therefore, how can our business models uphold yoga’s moral and ethical codes and reflect an overall policy of respect, honour, and acknowledgement? How do we demonstrate as yoga teachers that we are always contemplating along the lines of ‘right action’?  

Ethical and moral considerations 

So, exactly what should we reflect upon before accepting work from a school or approaching a school where there is an established yoga teacher? Below we will explore some questions that have been adapted from Kara-Leah Grant’s article, and then beneath the questions Kara-Leah helps us to reflect upon how our response to these questions may feel in our body and what this means.  

What is my true intention in taking on this work? 

Am I hoping that from this initial contact that the school will offer me more work? 

Am I under-cutting that teacher by offering a fee which is less or by offering free promotional work or in any other way?  

How would I feel if another teacher was to do this to me?  

Do I need to consult with the established school yoga teacher before accepting the work? 

How do I acknowledge and/or honour the established teacher?  

How do I ensure that my working in the school supports rather than undermines the established teacher? 

How do I collaborate and share with the established yoga teacher any future opportunities that arise within that school?   

Is it my responsibility as a trained yoga teacher to share my professional ethics with the school? 

What business model am I using? Is it similar to the current societal paradigm or I am using one which is following the ethics of yoga?  

Is this work really mine to take? 

“When we reflect upon these questions, listen deeply to the answers that come through – not just to the words but also to the tone and vibe of those words. 

If we catch ourselves defending, rationalising, or explaining it’s likely that our answer is coming from the conditioned mind – which suggests there may be more to look at. Truth has no need to defend itself, nor to rationalise and explain. 

This is why, with practice, we can learn to feel truth in the body, because the moment we go into defence, which is a function of the ego or conditioned mind, the body contracts or shuts down in some way. Often, it’s very subtle… but it’s always there.” Kara-Leah Grant 

Conclusion 

When we acknowledge the established yoga teacher, by communicating with the teacher about the work we wish to share in their school community, we may find that we are not taking anything away from that teacher, that the established teacher feels honoured, a mutual understanding is paved, and boundaries, including fees are shared and discussed. We may even find that the established teacher is happy to share work with the other yoga company and vice versa. Thereby offering a diverse and broad experience of yoga to that school community and children within it.  

We also will find that we are enriching that community because that small yet very thoughtful and caring gesture of giving the established teacher a heads-up means the energy is one of mutual support, respect, and honour. This vibration can be felt subtly across many different levels and this means that the good work we do across the school community will expand and grow in ways we could never imagine.   

Looking at the bigger picture, what business model we adopt and what values we choose to align ourselves with will have an impact on the possibility of yoga being used as a powerful tool for social change and if in time a more yogic framework of living can be offered as an alternative paradigm. As a yoga community and predominantly a community of women it is our obligation to uphold yoga’s moral and ethical codes by living and embodying them; by demonstrating a different way of being; by applying them through the interactions and relationships we build as we promote our business; by running our businesses with integrity, compassion, sensitivity, and care. 

I do hope this article helps other people who are on this path.

-Big Take Away Statements:

Hanford: Kids aren't being taught to read because of underlying attitudes and assumptions that the "whole language" approach is best, when in actuality science supports explicit phonics instruction.

Wills Lloyd: Effective reading instruction starts with the use of systematic and explicit phonics instruction, and then as kids become better at reading, the move to a whole language/balanced literacy approach becomes more beneficial.

-Nuggets:

Hanford: "The sum of the research showed that explicitly teaching children the relationship between sounds and letters improved reading achievement. The panel concluded that phonics lessons help kids become better readers."

This stood out to me because I didn't really know that research really supported explicitly teaching phonics. I thought that there was research supporting balanced literacy as well, but I didn't know that there was more support for explicit phonics instruction.

Wills Lloyd: "Of course children need phonics instruction, and in the early grades this instruction should be systematic and explicit. But phonics is not sufficient to create readers. Children need instruction in how to use features of what they are reading (e.g., context) to resolve comprehension of passages, including those sneaky few instances where they encounter homographs."

This stood out to me because it shows that even though research shows that phonics best helps student learn to read, phonics alone will not teach students. They also need a bit of the "whole language" approach too. Any reading philosophy by itself i not good enough to create readers, but a mix is needed.

-Readerly Exploration:

For my readerly exploration, I took myself on a field trip to a place on campus that connects with the big ideas of my assigned readings. Both of these articles said that explicit phonics instruction was the best to use in class, but they didn't state how to do it. Thus, I took a field trip to the library to find some resources or lesson plans that showed how to teach phonics in an early elementary classroom. While exploring, I stumbled across a word building reading kit called reading rods. It contained color-coded rods, activity card, an instruction manual and activity book, trays, and a storage tub. Looking through the kit, I realized how beneficial phonics can be to kids. While sounding out the letter, kids can create the word using blocks. In addition, the instruction books had lesson plans almost identical to the ones that we have to write. It includes a "hook", objectives, supplies you'll need, and an "assessing learning" section. This really furthered my understanding of the article because I now know what explicit phonics instruction looks like in the classroom, and why it can be so helpful to children.

Are you more annoyed when decorations are up two months prior to a holiday or still up two months after a holiday? I was looking for a picture and realized that I never posted the one above. I’ve added one of my flowers to make up for it. I have 3 exams in three weeks (one I just took yesterday). I also had some med school interviews this week for a special program. I don’t think my chances are good, but it’s still possible.

I hope you get a chance to eat your favorite food today, or at least eat something you enjoy. Many of us have complicated relationships with food, but whether you do or you don’t, I hope you’re able to find some joy in it, guilt-free.

Productivity Tips

For those who just can’t seem to get things done because their brains won’t let them

There’s lots of cool tips out there to study more and study better, but I don’t see many about just understanding how to study at all and not staring at your work for hours on end and getting nothing done even if you want to.

In short:

Take care of yourself

Organization

Multitask responsibly

Pomodoro

Be careful with your obsessions

Try different study spots

1. Be kind to yourself.

Studying is hard enough, even for the gifted kids, straight-A students, 4.0 since birth, effortless workaholics.

If you feel exhausted, take a break. A timed one is best, but take a break. Sleep, walk around, eat, do something fun, stare at the wall, cry, talk to people, scroll online, rant to yourself about life, do anything except be productive. Rest if you need it. You won’t get things done if you’re always 2 seconds from crying.

Sleep, for the love of god sleep. There’s no competition of “who can function the best on the least sleep”. Get a minimum of 8 hours, please, for your own sanity. At minimum, I do 6 if I have a lot of studying to do in one night, but these are exceptions. You can’t study if you’re sleepy.

2. Have some level of organization

If this means a full bullet journal, a dedicated notion space, daily todo lists, or even random post-it notes and lists on your hand, anything is better than nothing. When you’re overwhelmed and forgetting things, a visual reminder can save a grade.

On the other end, don’t spend hours organizing. If it’s during a break that’s okay, but when it cuts into actual studying, you might be better off with a sticky note stuck to your face then a beautiful header and color-coded database (as painful as it sounds 🥲)

3. Do stuff while you study

Eat snacks, drink stuff, play with figit spinners, play lo-fi or music in other languages. If it’s distracting, then don’t, but consider it.

4. Time yourself

Use pomodoro (cliché, but it works, i promise). If you can’t afford forest, try your phone’s native timer or other free pomodoro timers. For the notioners, Bloc’s has a free widget.

5. For the hyperfixators

Time youself like I mentioned above, but do your thing during breaks if you can’t help youself. When I get obsessed with a new fic or show, I take my 10 minute breaks to read or watch. It’s both motivating and comforting.

It’s hard pulling yourself away, but don’t forget about what you need to do. Do your best :) If worst comes to worst, have 30 minute breaks in between the 30 minute study sessions. 30 minutes of productivity every hour is better than 30 minutes of staring at your book and 10 minutes of staring at the wall.

Ideally, don’t give in and read/watch/etc. when you have studying to do, but this is better than nothing.

6. Try different study spots

I didn’t realize how effective this is until recently. Move around every week or every day and get a new spot.

You have options: in just my room, I have my desk, my bed, the ground, and the random chair in the corner. You might also have: random benches outside, the library, your kitchen table, the couch, the grass under a tree, hallways, or your dining hall. This also helps with back/neck pain! Maybe it won’t work for you, but maybe it will.

Just to repeat, be kind to yourself. If your friend was crying, exhausted, burntout, depressed, you wouldn’t tell them to suck it up and study. Don’t do that to yourself either.

Here’s a view of my desk with all the mess plus a macro view. On my third straight day of coffee. It’s instant coffee, so low caffeine content. It’s only worked on day 1 and today, so I’m not sure what that’s about.

Ok but who told Bruce that Jason was dead. Like Batman already knew but who had to tell Bruce?

I think poetically The Commissioner telling him is perfectly heartbreaking. Like, he’s there in the aftermath of B’s parents dieing and then he tells him his kid is dead.

And then when Steph dies, like I’m sure the people of Gotham saw Steph with the Wayne’s and just figured she was adopted already, so when her body is officially announced dead, like the cops get told and everything after the gang war is settled. Gordon has to drive up to Wayne manor again and Bruce has been holding back his tears for her, gang war and all, since she died so when Gordon walks up he just knows he can finally let go.

So the Commissioner gets a replay of what happened with Jason.

Bruce opens the door asks what he’s doing all the way out here and then after a moment of eye contact his face falls he crashes to the ground sobbing, finally. Gordon gathers him up and holds him just like when he was a kid. Alfred comes out. Only after making Gordon say that his grandchild is dead does he allows his stoic demeanor to fall, alongside his tears.

I imagine that the rest of the family is there, as well as the league, on both occasions. Mourning these brave kids who died for the world.

The Digital Playhouse Foundation is awarded a Stacks Blockchain Foundation Grant to commence Stacks Australia. The grant was instigated by Kieran Nolan to fund projects at the School of Bitcoin.
