Honey, I’m home…
GOJO SATORU X FEM READER MDNI
tags: ceo/dad/husband gojo, smut, light degradation (use of slut twice), not pet play but he calls her a kitty, exhibitionism (gojo is on a zoom call), teasing, one shot.
wc: 3.7k
a/n: after the manga and the anime last week, this was needed for me to revive (an oldie from the drafts) 😭 not to mention spanish uni is kicking my ass so satoru is keeping me sane rn hahaha 🫣
Tumblr media
Eating breakfast alone was seldom done in the Gojo household, because Satoru liked the kind of breakfasts that looked like they do in the movies.
An assortment of brightly coloured fruits and pancake stacks, his wife by his side, a smug grin on his face as he sipped his coffee and asked everyone what they’d be doing with their day. The odd dad joke or two, or more.
You snorted quietly at the thought, pausing at the fridge door. The kids were at Megumi and Yuuji’s, so they couldn’t tease you for being sentimental, or groan at the photos their embarrassing father insisted be plastered to the fridge.
Heart shapes, letters, bunnies, an assortment of magnets stuck decades worth of fond memories to the appliance. Your daughter’s first birthday, with Satoru at her side helping her blow out the candles, your second son’s first time at a water park on Satoru’s shoulders, last Christmas vacation in the Philippines.
Your eyes crinkled as you took notice of your favourite one, stroking the scrawl of Satoru’s handwriting on the Polaroid’s border. “Mr and Mrs Gojo.”
The polaroid was the lovesick image of you and Satoru in Italy for your honeymoon.
You can remember the warmth of the evening, and how pink the sunburn was on the tip of his nose. Oh how the sun had bronzed the nape of his neck, making his white hair all the more a stark contrast. His cologne was sweet and intoxicating as his large hands dwarfed your cheeks, as he leaned in to kiss your cheek. You could feel his smile as he did so, laughing at the cheers that engulfed you both. The faces visible behind you both were flushed and merry as your hands clasped.
One of your favourite photos.
Your husband’s position as CEO of his clan’s company afforded all the luxuries a woman and a family could desire. But sometimes everybody needed Satoru. There were nights you fell asleep wrapped in his arms, only to be left with cold sheets and him muttering into his phone down the hall at the crack of dawn, Ijichi beeping just outside already.
Satoru always told you to be selfish, to put yourself first, to be bold with your desires. But you found it hard to voice when you were feeling —greedy about him. When you were feeling so possessive you wanted to drive over to headquarters when he was doing overtime, and fuck him right in his office so everybody would know that work wasn’t his only priority.
He’d been gone a mere twelve days, and he went on these trips three times a year, max—granted. And Satoru normally had his best men on them but sometimes he had to go too.
You almost scalded your lap with tea when you heard steps clicking through the foyer. You held your breath waiting for a sunny and inevitable rendition of a ‘Honey, I’m home!’
Instead you heard the surely jet-lagged mumble of your husband instead. “I forgot about it because I was overseas Nanami! You know you ought to let loose if you really think I should’ve come straight to headquarters as soon as I landed!”
He was positively barking on the line when his suitcases reached a sudden halt and he saw a peek of you in the kitchen. You grinned, jumping to your feet to greet him though he only gestured to his phone with a tired smile.
You blew him a kiss and his shoulders slackened, finally dropping his bags. “Yes, bu-I’m already home! I’m not heading through traffic just to-“
You reclined back on your stool, grinning at him when he pointed an imaginary gun to his head at Nanami’s audible ranting on the other line.
“Fine, I’ll be on the call in five!” He ripped off his jacket and headed down the foyer, “Morning babe!” he boomed, “Didn’t wake you, did I?”
His voice echoed down the hall. When you reached him you stood at the foot of the stairs, your hands on your hips. You arched one brow before you spoke through gritted teeth, “No, you didn’t.”
The deep split of your robe was exposing the planes of your smooth skin, teasing slithers of your breasts and your belly button. He wanted nothing more than to get on his knees and worship you as if it were a holy day. He wanted your thighs swung over his shoulders, and his mouth right between them.
He mentally cursed at the thought, releasing a deep sigh into his palm. “You okay, sweetheart?”
He didn’t even have the time.
“Fine, and you?”
He could hear in your voice you were on the edge of asking something, asking for more. After so many years of marriage he could smell when a bad mood was brewing from you, better yet taste it.
He tried to fool you as if it were easy, that signature grin, a smooth click of those fingers. “Nothing! Just gotta sit in on this meeting, goddess.” He winked, “Let’s catch up in a bit.”
The entire interaction had left you dumbfounded, standing in the foyer and suddenly feeling lonelier than you did eating breakfast alone. Somehow.
“Gojo fucking Satoru,” you hissed to yourself. “Do not goddess me.”
Had someone replaced your husband with a clone? Satoru could have flown halfway across the world and back, after not seeing you for more than a day was enough to make him needier than ever. He always came back, desperate and ready to devour you.
You were unsettled, but quickly renewed with courage when you approached his study half an hour later and heard him speaking. His voice was back to its usual, chirpy and light.
You wavered for several seconds, loosening your robe before you slipped inside.
He was gesturing wildly with his hands, relaying the success of his trip no doubt. But when he saw you his eyes narrowed and then darkened.
You resisted a smirk when you heard Choso’s voice seconds later. “Why’d you turn your camera off?”
Then Toji’s, husky and bored. “We don’t have to see his smug face, do we?” he spat. “Anyway, I’m fucking falling asleep here. It’s early. You gonna continue or what?”
Satoru hummed, his voice now entirely reserved for you as his eyes were all over those bare thighs of yours. You were sprawled out on his chaise lounge and scrolling through your phone.
He cleared his throat, “Bad signal, sorry about that.”
His eyes didn’t leave you, not even once. You could feel his gaze all over your skin, as scorching as the sun as you stretched and yawned where you lay. Languid and feigning innocence as you arched your back slightly and felt your robe slip enough to expose your bare breasts.
You heard a sharp intake of breath and continued stretching this way and that. But after minutes of this torment and his various sighs to grab your attention you relented and turned a fraction.
Lust was pooling in those crystalline eyes, turning them dark. If they were usually like waves sparkling in the morning sun, they were now akin to a bottomless ocean with a crescent moon’s light.
A breath passed and you rose to your feet, mischief tipping the corners of your lips up into something erotic and enchanting to your husband. He tilted his head, asking a silent question as he hummed in agreement to whatever the hell Nanami had just said.
You shifted onto your knees and crawled between his legs and he smirked as if the sight amused him. You rested your cheek on his thigh, like a needy cat waiting to be played with. How dare you act as if you were waiting in apprehension when those eyes of yours said anything but.
His eyes finally flickered with warning, but not the red-light kind of warning, the kind that oozed with a dominance so overpowering that you bowed your head and took to quietly unzipping his pants.
His teeth clenched in anticipation before he jabbed at his keyboard to mute himself, and gave you his attention. “Bored, huh? I can give you something worthwhile to do, honey. Just wanted something to suck on? Yeah?” he cooed, his voice dripping so sweetly in condescension that it made your teeth hurt.
He chuckled when you nodded eagerly, running this thumb over your lower lip as he unbuckled his belt one-handed. “I know, baby. I know. Ready for me?”
You grinned, opening your mouth for him to push his thumb into it first. “Be good to me, yeah? I don’t wanna have to cut my meeting short because you think it’s funny to tease.”
He spoke to you as if he was saying something as mundane as remember to take an umbrella today. Rather than a man who was now loudly slapping the tip of his cock on the tongue of his needy wife during a conference call.
His low groans reverberated through your core, every inch of your skin waiting to be touched by your lover. The sweet and salty taste of him kissed your tastebuds and came with a rueful delayed reaction. At first it helped soothe the aching arousal between your legs but then it made you even needier.
“How’s that for my spoiled little sweetheart? Heh heh, like a needy little cat, aren’t ya? Licking up every last drop.”
“Not as needy as you,” you purred, pulling away just in time for his arousal to drip onto your lower lip. “Meow.”
His brows knitted together at the sight, his arousal was glistening and smeared all over your lips.
“No, no. Don’t,” he hissed, before his voice sweetened. “Swallow it for me, baby. I’ve gotta get back to work.”
He winked and put a finger to his lips before asking Geto to repeat whatever convoluted question that had been background noise just moments ago.
You smiled in glee around his dick when his voice wobbled the further you took him down your throat, doing your best to remain quiet just under his desk. But as usual, it was Satoru who threatened to blow your cover—as usual.
You swelled with pride when he threw his head back, Adam's apple bobbing frantically and his chest heaving back and forth.
It was Nanami who noticed first, interrupting Geto’s presentation when he hears a shaky breath stuttering through the laptop at the end of the conference table. “Gojo? Are we boring you?”
“Ah, no!” He scrambled forward so quickly he swiped a pot of stationery clean off his desk. Not without bumbles of laughter from the meeting room of men.
“Just…working out!” he managed through gritted teeth, one hand still cradling the back of your head and guiding your sweet and unforgiving mouth back and forth.
Toji sighed, the oldest of the men and the least naive. “You choose to do that shit now?”
Choso yawned, glancing toward an agitated Nanami. “What shit are we discussing?”
Nanami sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose, “You’d know if you weren’t asleep, and Gojo save the workout for after the meeting, please. Let’s proceed.”
“Not my fault, I had to stay up and help Yuuji cram for an exam,” Choso mumbled.
“Aww! Choso-nii!” Suguru laughed, “Satoru, are you hearing this?”
You were both momentarily so grateful for his team’s ability to bicker about anything down to the probability of rain that day, that you were bringing Satoru to heights of pleasure he’d not even dared anticipate. One he was laughably jet lagged and two he was in an incredibly important meeting but he couldn’t care less.
“Oh fuck, baby. Oh—juust like that!” he spluttered, unable to think about anything else other than the way you were flicking your tongue along his shaft. You sucked and rubbed your wet lips along that sensitive spot of his that made him whimper upon contact.
You fucking devil.
Suguru burst into laughter first, without Satoru’s arm the sounds of him slapping the table in his hysterics filled the room, then followed Sukuna’s laughter. “Is that pretty little wife of yours home by any chance?” he cackled, then Satoru was sure he heard Toji’s laughter but he was already too far gone.
He hissed as he pulled you off his cock, coughing to smother the audible popping sound. His teeth sinking into his lower lip at the lewd sight of saliva drooling down onto your chest. “I hate you,” he hissed in a whisper. Before muting the call to allow you both to compose yourself, whilst Nanami scolded the team.
Then he was ready.
He cleared his throat before he spoke, “Sorry about that! My wife was giving me a quick massage before she headed out for work. You know how much sleeping on aeroplanes messes with my neck, right Nanami? Please, proceed.”
The sooner this ended the better.
Sukuna snorted first, “Are you sure you weren’t fucking her?”
“Would you refrain from referring to my wife like that, Sukuna? You are already on two strikes, aren’t you?” Satoru’s voice was so short and stern that even Nanami held his breath.
“As I said, let’s continue.”
A chorus of “yes sir” had Satoru smirking down at you on the floor. His eyes locked on you as he made quick work of the mouse and pushed his keyboard aside, tapping the edge of your desk.
You sprang to your feet to sit, the air thick with tension as he untied your robe to reveal the bare skin beneath it. “Oh baby, just look at you,” he purred, bringing his chair closer just to marvel at the sight before him.
His large hands gripped your breasts, sucking and licking until you relaxed and sank your hands into his hair, guiding him to where you needed him most. He was eager to please, his eyes not breaking from yours for even a second as he leaned forward and kissed your pussy, grinning when he found you slick and dripping for him.
He suckled on your clit until you mewled, his lips fitted to the bud as his tongue swirled and licked until you were gasping out his name. “Gojo? So, how did you find their sales department?” Nanami exhaled, “Gojo?”
He broke from you with an apologetic grin, assuming that sharp CEO voice as he flicked his mic back on. “Yeah, as I told Yaga when I was there the energy was not quite what I expected. It was interesting to see how their team implemented the techniques in which…”
But his words were lost on you, your teeth sunk into your lip as he flicked the tips of his fingers against your swollen clit. The movements were so deft and precise that they were turning your brain into mush, but they were also so tortuously light that you couldn’t handle it anymore. Heat rushed to your cheeks. Your eyes clamped shut.
Satoru removed his hand, tapping your thigh to grab your attention. He pointed to his cock with a smirk. “Ride me,” he mouthed. “Now.”
“Choso, how was your trip to Kyoto? Did you manage any meetings with the execs?” he continued, squeezing the backs of your thighs whilst you grabbed the base of him and hovered above his cock.
“Well, I took my brother so I didn’t have a lot of time to….”
You shook your head, gulping when he flicked his finger across that mouse pad once more.
“Ah? You gonna leave me hanging? That’s cruel, darling. More my style than yours. But as long as you keep quiet, we shouldn’t have a problem.” His voice was silky, and just ever so slightly mean, but it aroused you and he knew it. “Can’t have them hearing you like this, baby. Like you’re some kind of slut.”
“Satoru, I won’t be able to be quiet, I can wait till after I-“
He tutted, sweeping his hands under your thighs as his gaze hardened. “You clearly can’t, so come on darling, sit on it for me, yeah? You know I hate these fucking meetings so help me get through it and fuck me.” He pressed a sweet kiss to your lips, until you were letting him take full control of your mouth.
“I’m just so tired baby, need you to take care of me,” he moaned into your lips. “I know you can, baby. I know your pussy needs me inside, huh?” he cooed, rutting his cock against your slicked cunt.
“Yes,” you whimpered, pulling away to find his his cheeks dusted with pink and his eyes barely open,
“Yeah?”
You nodded, slotting one arm around his neck whilst you guided him to your cunt and began to sink down on him. “Oh fuuck,” he cursed, his voice leaving him in short hot bursts of air against your neck.
“That’s it baby, go on. You’re gonna have to move for me baby. Go slow for me. Fuck me, touch me.”
His eyes fluttered shut as he guided your hands under his shirt, feeling your touch like this was enough to make him come sometimes. “Baby, fuck me. Come on.”
“Can’t. I’ll be noisy,” you whined, only a few inches full but yet struggling to focus on whatever Choso was rambling about and then promptly being interrupted by Geto and then Sukuna.
“You’ve gotta make this up to me baby, didn’t touch myself the entire time I was away. You’re gonna make me lose it. This is your fault.”
“M’ sorry! I thought you wanted it. You were hard already!”
“I always want you, baby. I always want it. Let me show you.”
He lifted his hips and filled you in one fluid moment, both of your voices embracing in one sweet and lengthy moan. Before he was moaning with every thrust, “Cause you were prancing around my office looking too pretty like that baby, I’m about to show you just how much.”
Your pussy clutched him so tight at the praise he groaned and found his lips landing on your own with a magnetic, desperate pull from within his heart. How lucky he was to come back home to you.
“Good girl, you knew exactly what I wanted, knew I wanted to come home and fuck you just like this.”
He watched your pussy drool down his cock as you moved up and down on it, tentative and hungry for him. Your pupils were blown wide, like you were drunk on him, like you had been waiting for the moment you could be like this with him.
It made his cock twitch, the sensation making you quiver and smother your noises into your palm. You stopped, his full length sheathed inside of you, the relief and pleasure that contorted your features was truly beautiful, the sight he’d been waiting for. You tried desperately to catch your breath, “Need a second.”
He brought you closer, wrapping an arm around your back as he whispered. “Huh? You needy little thing, I thought you couldn’t—fuckin’—wait.” Each word was separated by a breath as your cunt fluttered from his low, and reprimanding tone. “No way. No.”
He felt so good. He was filling you so well.
He flicked himself of mute to hum along to Toji’s thoughts of Choso’s pitch. But his breaths were growing more and more laboured. You turned to see Nanami’s face growing pink. “You falling asleep there or pumping one out before you crash man?” Sukuna asked.
“Sorry! I just—” His chest heaved, and he closed his eyes to take a breath just as your pussy was teasing his tip, so close but not close enough. You grinned as you took revenge and slammed down on him all at once, “Oh fuck!” he groaned.
“Sleeping on that plane really got my neck, just had to crack it.”
Toji leaned to look into the camera a huge smirk on his face, “Is your fucking wife with you?”
“What, of course not,” he answered, his pants surely audible the other end. “In the gym actually.”
“Are you serious?”
“Carry on with the meeting I don’t have all day.” That was his no bullshit tone. The sound of it making you throb so wildly he was all smug, a little ‘hmph’ leaving his lips as he muted the call once more.
Nanami stiffened, “Yes sir, Ijichi proceed.”
“You’re gonna pay for that, darling,” he breathed, locking your hips in place so he could pound up into you with ruthless precision. You were a whimpering mess, arms around his neck squeezing impossibly tight as you had no other choice but to take all he was offering.
“Toru, Toru! Toru!” Your voice climbed higher with every thrust, the lewd sounds of your moans only amplified by the high walls of his slick, black study.
“Please, m’ sorry. Gonna come, gonna make a mess,” you cried.
“Oh yeah? I know you will.” His thumb started on your clit, rubbing tight little circles that had your lower half jolting and squirming, as his cock hit that spot like a hammer to a nail. All too perfect, all too precise, like everything your husband did.
Closer and closer, until you were pulling on his hair, body coated so much in sweat your hands resigned to clawing down his nape instead.
“Please!”
“No baby, make a fucking mess. How could I ever say no to my wife? They all know it, you know it.”
“Important meeting…Nanami’ll get mad at me! He’ll know!”
“Fuck Nanami, fuck work, fuck everyone. Focus on me. Go on, oh? Too much?” He laughed, kissing down your throat. “You can cry baby, fuck yourself on my cock like there’s no fucking tomorrow,” he growled.
“Use me, use me, use me.”
You finally bursted but Satoru was still moving his hips like the sadist he truly was. “Feels too good doesn’t it baby, doesn’t it?”
He laughed at the fluids covering your thighs and soiling his pants. “Fuuck, baby you’re so hot.”
Kissing your temple fondly, you both startled as you came back to reality. “Gojo!”
His fingers made quick work of his mouse. “Sorry! Sorry! I had to take an important call.”
“But um, listen I’m gonna have to go.”
Luckily for him you’d slowed down so he could finally get his breaths even, chuckling and trying to sound as blasé as he could muster. “I’ve really gotta go! Nanami, update me, yeah!”
He ended the call before they could even complain.
You stood, legs shaking as you leant over to grab your robe. But Satoru was already gripping your ass from behind, “Where do you think you’re going? Shall I put another baby in ya this morning? You’re in heat after all. Clearly three aren’t enough, huh?”
He mounted you over his desk, his chest flat against your back as he filled you up all at once. “Why you so wet for, huh?” he groaned, already hitting that spot inside you that had you whining. “Because you’re a needy little slut who sucked me off—whilst I was busy working—or from squirting all over me and the desk? Come on baby! Tell me?”

The radio in the living room sent smooth jazz through the first floor of the home. Music while you took care of housework or cooking was a rare luxury you allowed yourself. The little joys in your life were far and few between, but when you have the chance to cling to one, you did not hesitate to hold it close whenever it was safe to.
Laurence didn’t care for radio or jazz, much preferring orchestral music on the rare occasion where he allowed the silence to be broken. With him out of the house, you could indulge as you sat at the work desk in the kitchen, kneading bread one handedly as best as you could.
It would be much easier if you could put your weight into it or even just use both hands, but your shoulder screamed at you if you so much as made a move to try. You had a shawl tied into a makeshift sling, taking the weight off the joint and a sack of hot dry rice tucked into your top, tied against your shoulder, soothing the aching joint with the radiating heat.
The bottle of aspirin sat at the back of the table, an ever-present reminder of the constant pain you were in. You’d need to go to the pharmacy soon and pick up some more to refill the bottle. The last thing you wanted was to risk Laurence noticing the bottle was getting low and to get on you for taking too much.
Right now you were riding the slight fog that the tincture left in the pain’s wake. You didn’t dare take a full drop, only dabbing the tip if your tongue against the side of the glass dropper before putting the tincture back on Laurence’s side of the sink, spending minutes to line the bottom of the bottle up with the ring of discoloration it had left stained into the surface.
You didn’t know if he would notice if it wasn’t just so, but finding out wasn’t high on your list of priorities. Laurence could be particular about some of the strangest things. Often you wouldn’t find out what those things were until you had set him off.
You knew he didn’t want you taking the drops he took for his back pain. It was his opinion that the aftermath of neither his fists nor his affection did not leave enough pain behind for you to need them.
After setting the bread aside to rise, you turned to the stove. It was a beast of an appliance, but it was a modernization you were grateful for. Turning a knob to open the gas valve under a burner, you listened to the hiss of the gas as you reached for the matches. It took a few tries to light the large match, hand trembling as you ran the match head over the rough side of the stove each time before you lit the burner, then the oven.
Grabbing the heavy iron kettle off the counter, you braced it on your hip to help carry the large pot as if it was a small child. You set on the stove before shoving it over the burner to heat while you clumsily chopped the vegetables as evenly as you could.
That was a battle in itself. Between the way your hand shook and not having use of your other arm to brace the vegetables with, your knife cuts were a mess. Laurence would be angry if he saw the sloppy work or the mess of vegetables that fell to the ground, wasted.
Blinking back tears, you tried your best. There was no use crying over it. It was all you could do to do your best. It had to be good enough. Your best had to be enough.
Dinner had to be perfect, you reminded yourself as you spread flour over the workspace and prepared to roll the roast in it. Every step of preparing your home for a guest and preparing the dinner was challenging, and this was no different.
You needed to get the roast searing and take a few more pills for the pain, then you could face cleaning up the mess of the kitchen. You were ahead of the pain right now, but you had to stay ahead of it if you were going to get through this dinner without embarrassing Laurence.
You loathed to dirty yet another dish that you would have to wash tonight, but with one hand you couldn’t pick up the hunk of beef very well at all. Rolling the flour covered roast onto a plater, you braced it against your hip as you carried it to the stove.
It would all be so much easier if you would just use your other hand, but the shoulder was still so weak. It was better to keep the weight and stress off the joint as long as possible. There were a few more hours until Laurence would be back with the guest, one Mr. Moreau, who you were nervous to meet.
Having guests was uncommon, as Laurence preferred to meet business associates outside of the home. On the occasion when he would bring you, you were an accessory to be shown off, seen but not heard. Just as was your role during your frequent dinners and trips to the cinema.
As the pork fat bubbled in the kettle, you set the plater on an unused burner, saying a quick prayer that the iron wouldn’t be hot enough to shatter it. There was no graceful way to wrestle the meat up into your arm, wet flour and blood smearing against your day dress.
The meat fell into the pan with a thud. The sound of sizzling meat filled the kitchen as you gathered the dishes and dropped them into the waiting sink, full of sudsy water. Washing them was just another chore on your list of things to do. Mechanically, you slowly set to work cleaning your workspace one handedly.
The fog in your mind gave shape to a sharp face and warm eyes you found your mind returning to often enough. When you cleaned, that was when you let your mind run free, knowing that you were least likely to be disturbed.
It’s when you let yourself daydream. You let yourself think about the ways your life could have been different. It was when you let yourself be ungrateful for all the things Laurence had provided for you and how hard he worked to do so.
You thought about what it would have felt like to fall in love and if falling in love was even something that really happened outside of story books read to children. What sort of man would you have fallen in love with? Would he have a square face like Laurence, or would he be sharp and angular, like the man at the butcher shop? Would you have fallen in love with someone with kind eyes and fluffy hair?
Would you fall in love with a man like the man you kept getting glimpses of? What sort of man was he? He was tall; you remembered how he towered over you even as he leaned down to ensure you had a good grip on his arm as he walked you out of the butcher shop.
Was he as kind as he seemed? Was he as kind as he looked?
Or was it all a show? It was a show with Laurence. He had been so kind when you had first met, offering sweet smiles and sweeter promises. He courted you quickly, promising the world and while everything happened too fast to say you had fallen in love, you thought love was on the horizon as your parents accepted his proposal of marriage. The wedding followed shortly after.
What did it feel like to fall in love? The question and image of fluffy brown hair circled your mind as you dumped the vegetables into the kettle. It took multiple trips to the sink to cover the roast with water that would become the gravy.
With the music playing, you hadn’t heard Laurence’s car pull up in front of the house or the front door opening. What you heard was it slam shut.
Tumblr media
You fussed with your hair in the large living room mirror and dabbed more cover-up over the redness that was quickly spreading on your face. Laurence hadn’t been less than impressed with your choice of meal and even less impressed with your arm in the makeshift sling.
He had accused you of playing up the pain, voice climbing into a roar as he stormed into the kitchen after turning off the music. Accusations of wanting to look battered and beaten to make him look bad bounced off the walls as he loomed closer.
There was only a moment for you to cringe back as he slapped you across the face, the force of the blow splitting your lip open. Laurence wouldn’t like the bright red lipstick you wore now as you stood waiting for the guest, but it was the only thing that could hide the cut. It wouldn’t do for him to see the evidence of how you angered Laurence. Sleeves and bangles obscured the rest of the fading, healing marks on your arms that told a story of your prior transgressions.
Mr. Moreau was coming to do business with Laurence. If you were lucky, he would hardly spare a glance at you to notice the hidden marks and you could eat while ignored. If he didn’t look too closely, you could hope he wouldn’t notice anything that would take away from the air of perfection.
Laurence didn’t tell you anything about the man that was coming, leaving you waiting for the unknown man to walk through your door with your husband.
The sound of the door opening startled you out of your thoughts. You flinched, causing pain to shoot through your shoulder. Swallowing the groan, just as you always tried to do when Laurence might hear, you tried to pull yourself together.
It took everything in you to spread the smile across your face and force your feet up off the ground with each step toward the door. Your black heels click clacked across the hardwood floor, reinforcing to you that been picking your feet up with each step, something you struggled to do naturally through the pain in your legs. Laurance hated when you would shuffle your feet, dragging your fingertips along the furniture for an added sense of security in the aftermath of his anger.
It wouldn’t stop you from falling if your knees gave out again, but you were not above pretending it would. There was no kind man here to help scoop you off the floor and put you back on your feet if that were to happen.
As Laurence stepped through the door, you tried to make your small steps look normal and elegant and not painfully cautious.
“Welcome home.” You pulled the smile tighter across your face, trying to force it into your eyes as your husband’s eyes made a quick pass over you before he turned to welcome the guest inside. Hopefully, he found your appearance acceptable.
A tall man stepped through the door, tanned hand reaching up to pluck the hat from his head, revealing a fluffy brown hair and a pointed nose. Laurence took his hat from him and hung it on the coat tree by the door.
Your breath caught in your lungs as his warm brown eyes locked with yours, a smile spreading wider across his face. Would he say anything? Would he mention your fall at the butcher’s shop? Would he comment at all on your prior meeting?
“My Darling,” Laurence held his hand out for you. You tried and failed to walk smoothly to him, knees knocking together as you tripped and stumbled slightly over your own two feet. Thankfully, his attention was on the guest shrugging out of his coat. “This is Mr. More-”
“Alastor Moreau,” the man interrupted Laurance, reaching out for your hand as soon as he hung his coat on the tree by the door. “A pleasure to meet you. Quite a pleasure indeed!”
“Oh,” you startled when he took your hand, far from used to such bold and forward actions from Laurence’s business partners. The bangles around your wrist clattered together as he pulled your hand up while leaning down at the waist, placing a kiss on the back of your hand. His eyes closed, long dark lashes fanning against his cheeks as you felt your face grow warm. “That’s not-”
His eyes fluttered open slowly. You watched helplessly as his eyes lingered on your wrist. Could he see the marks under the shiny metal and glittering beads? You hoped not, but feared he could. It felt like he could see everything.
When it felt like you couldn’t stand it anymore, his eyes moved again and he slowly stood tall, towering over you. It felt like his eyes were looking past everything and right into your soul. What did he see? What did he know?
Laurence’s hand wrapped around your waist as Alastor dropped your hand. You cringed at this touch, pain shooting through your shoulder when your husband pressed it into his side. His fingers dug into your hip possessively.
You flinched in pain; the smile faltering on your face as Laurence jostled you against him. He was saying something, but you lost the words in the sea of pain.
Brown eyes moved between you and your husband. His sharp eyebrow rose as he cocked his head to the side. What was he thinking? What was he seeing?
“This is my darling wife.” Your mind was finally catching up with the words being said.
“Mr. Moreau,” you started, only to get cut off again.
“Alastor, please. For the lovely lady of the house, it simply cannot be anything other than Alastor.”
“Alastor, then.” Laurence started only to be cut off by a sharp laugh. Was the only soft part of this strange man in his hair and eyes?
“I did not know you were the Lady of this house!”
Laurence stuttered, tripping over his words. Thankfully, his hand fell from around your waist as he gaped at Alastor, mouth opening and closing like a freshly caught fish.
You allowed yourself one shuffling step away from your husband now that you were out from under his touch. It was a little room to breathe. Not much, but better than nothing.
“Alastor,” you pulled your face into what you hoped was a warm and welcoming smile as you drew the guest’s attention from your husband’s reddening face. “I’m afraid dinner isn’t quite finished. It shouldn’t be long yet. Please, do make yourself at home.”
“Of course, my dear. And a lovely home you’ve got for me to make myself at home in!” Alastor’s smile was wide and warm and yet it felt sharp to you at that moment. It felt calculating, cutting, but you couldn’t understand why that would be the case.
“Yes, well,” Laurence cleared his throat, and you felt your shoulders slump. You were taking too much attention for yourself while you had attempted to buy your husband time to collect himself.
You hadn’t intended to. You were just trying to be a good hostess. You were just trying to be a good wife.
“Shall we get down to business?” Laurence held out his arm, directing Alastor to the stairs and away from you.
“Yes, yes- of course. The details must be worked out.” Alastor’s eyes lingered on you as he turned.
“Darling, we’ll be in my study. Be a dear and bring us up some drinks? Alastor and I-”
“Mr. Moreau for you. Unless there’s something I’m not aware of,” Alastor again corrected.
“Mr. Moreau and I will be talking business while you finish up preparing the meal.”
“Of course,” you bow your head for a moment before stepping away to get the ice for their drinks, willing each step to look more steady than they felt as Laurence leads the way through the living room toward the stairs.
You were so focused on your steps that you didn’t notice the eyes following you or the way Alastor lingered behind Laurence, letting the gap between the men grow larger than expected as he watched you. Though you tried, you couldn’t hide the way you reached out, steading yourself in the doorway. It was one of the many things Alastor saw that you were not aware of.
That bit of information was catalogued away in the mental file he was building on your household. Alastor was a sharp man, always noticing things. It had a tendency to get him in trouble in the past, but as a man, he found it rather useful.
Laurence was possessive of you. A little kiss to your hand had gotten under your husband’s skin, yet he was willing to offer you as collateral on a loan? The idea was almost enough to draw a laugh from Alastor as he began to climb the stairs after Laurence.
Was he that sure of his ability to be good for the money or just arrogant? And oh, how the man seethed at not getting the same privileges as his wife, forced to pay Alastor more respect than was required of you. It was backward from social norms, but that just made it even more amusing.
Perhaps the loan would be worth making after all. The entertainment could be worthwhile and oh, what a lovely game this could birth.

Joe Quinn x Reader 🤍
Summary: Reader is long distance with Joe while he is working on a big project. He becomes more distant over time and reader is growing tired of the communication issues. Angst ensues.
Disclaimers: Some arguing, suggested alcohol misuse, discussions of mental health, and classic relationship hurt. Also some fluffy domestic!boyfriend!Joe simply because I wanted to :))))

“That place had the best carbonara in the city no doubt.” You made a mental note to move the aforementioned restaurant to the top of your list of rustic Italian favorites.
“I can barely move now. I can’t believe we finished all those courses.” Joe clutched his stomach with one hand and threw his head back dramatically.
Hand in hand with Joe, you strolled around the block. Walks after dinner were so peaceful. You and Joe were the kind of couple that didn’t have to say much. The feeling of intertwined fingers. The sound of two pairs of shoes clicking on the sidewalk. It was more than enough.
You and Joe had made a habit of trying a new restaurant every week or so. It was fun to be tourists in your own city and keep a running list of the best dishes. You relished finding a hole in the wall, those that were yet to be overhyped by internet reviews. The hidden gems could still be claimed as your little secret.
With Joe’s newfound fame, it was hard to get away from the media sometimes. You loved seeing his face on TV, social media, and god he looked good in print, but you enjoyed him most sitting right in front of you. Undivided attention was the love language of your relationship. Date night was a golden opportunity to turn your phones on silent and just forget about the masses. Not having to cook or clean up made the night feel luxurious. Something about a corner booth allowed you shut out the rest of the world.
Your steps fell into a rhythm and you looked up at the sky. Too many city lights drowned out the stars. The only notable shape was a waning moon.
“We should go somewhere in the country,” you whispered. “I wish we could see the stars.”
Joe hummed in agreement.
“I wonder which constellations there are this time of year.” You tilted your head and squint your eyes, but it was no help.
Joe didn’t answer. While you were busy looking at the moon, he was lost looking at you.
__________________________________________
“One more day” you sighed.
Joe left to film a new project tomorrow and there was a certain heaviness in the air. It’s conflicting to feel proud and unhappy at the same time. This movie was a huge win for Joe’s career, but also a stressful undertaking. In two years, you had never been away from him for more than a month at a time. That was about to change.
You sat on top of the kitchen counter, legs hanging over the edge. Joe stood steady, feet planted next to you on the granite. He reached up to the ceiling to unscrew the main light fixture. Household appliances never failed to break at the worst times. You were disappointed but not surprised that your final hours together were spent doing last minute projects around the house.
“I know, darling. As soon as we finish this we can do anything you want... hold this please.” He passed a light bulb down to you.
As much as you didn’t like having to do chores on your last day together, there was something comforting about it. It was so domestic. You loved being a homeowner with Joe. You got to take care of something and make it your own. Even if everything went wrong, you were a team.
“It’s okay, Joe. I kinda like this.”
He looked down at you, eyebrows raised like you had just said something untoward. “What do you mean you like this? Our light keeps flickering like a haunted mansion.”
“No, I just like your company. Besides, you look hot when you work,” you said matter-of-factly.
“Is that right?”
It was. When you were sitting at Joe’s feet, you had an entirely new view of him. Based on the way his chest moved, you could tell that his breath slowed when he was focused. His jaw tensed in concentration. Joe’s hands looked stupidly angelic toying with the glass fixture. When he lifted his arms over his head, the hem of his shirt raised just enough above his hips. How alluring.
Joe’s hand reached down to you, palm open, signaling for you to hand the light bulb back to him.
You started to pass it to him but paused with your hand halfway to his. “You should tell photographers what a great angle this is for you,” you teased.
Joe rolled his eyes and laughed softly. “If all you are going to do is sit there and ogle at me, does that make me your sexy electrician?”
“Only if I can be your sexy assistant.”
“Deal.”
__________________________________________
Five weeks had passed since Joe left. You were at the halfway mark and already completely over the long-distance setup. Being alone isn’t inherently lonely. Independence can be freeing, but there is a difference between independence and separation.
Joe is the kind of person that makes you feel both his presence and his absence.
There was no one to welcome you home from work. You almost made the mistake of announcing your presence as you walked through the front door. By the time you opened your mouth, you remembered no one was going to respond. When you sat down to watch TV, the couch felt alarmingly empty. Suddenly, you regretted turning down Joe’s request for a pet.
No one played music and waltzed around the kitchen with you. No one snuck up behind you and set their chin on your shoulder while you heated oil in the saucepan. Pouring a glass of wine alone felt more like medicating than celebrating.
In an effort to cheer yourself up, you took a group of friends out to a restaurant you tried with Joe. Turns out five star carbonara tastes different in the company of different people.
At first, Joe was adjusting seamlessly to long distance communication. He acted the same as he would if he was only gone for a week or two. You two were texting throughout the day and speaking on video calls every night. The third week on set got really busy, but Joe still talked to you before bed without fail. Seeing his face, even through a screen, was reassurance that everything was going to be fine.
At the end of the first month, contact became more sporadic. Joe didn’t pick up when you called one night. The only plausible explanation was that he running a little late, so you waited patiently for his reply. You smiled thinking of how apologetic he would be when he finally got home. Another two hours passed. StiIl, you gave Joe the benefit of the doubt. He was working so hard and you couldn’t blame him for conditions out of his control. Surely he would shoot you a text any minute now, telling you how wild his day had been.
Your notifications stayed painfully dry as time passed. You fell asleep with your phone still resting in your palm.
Vibrations against the mattress are what woke you the next morning. Still bundled up between the sheets, you picked up. A black screen was staring back at you instead of what you hoped would be another pair of sleepy eyes.
“Joe, I can’t see you.”
“Sorry love, we are rushing to grab breakfast! Don’t want to give you motion sickness!” he chuckled and closed a car door on the other end.
Joe’s use of the word we elicited immediate disappointment. The lack of privacy made you feel less free to speak. You shifted uncomfortably, moving away from the sight of the phone camera. Maybe no one else was watching, but you didn’t want to risk it. Laying in bed with deep bags under your eyes wasn’t the ideal way to meet Joe’s co stars for the first time.
The calls went on like that for a few days. He was always running out the door, pastry halfway in his mouth, spewing apologies on the way. A handful of cast and crew were in the background. You never spoke longer than the length of a car ride.
Joe kept calling with his camera off.
This week you couldn’t get ahold of him, despite your best efforts. Every time you called you received the same answers:
Long hours on set tonight. Miss you Xx
Early call time tomorrow! Sorry love!
Hair and makeup needs me at 4:00am... Mornings aren’t gonna work this week
You laid in bed staring at the messages. Your eyes watered from the blue light burning your eyes. That or you just wanted a really good excuse to tear up. The most recent sent text mocked you:
Got a minute to chat?
And below it, [text read thirty minutes ago].
__________________________________________
You didn’t see the photos until the next day when you were sat on your lunch break. Each one looked harmless on its own, but there were SO many. You paused with a fork lifted halfway to your mouth, shocked at the length of the Twitter thread you were reading.
In light of the lack of direct communication, you had secretly hoped that searching Joe’s name on socials would give you a glimpse of what he was up to. However, you didn’t expect Twitter to serve you an explanation for Joe’s absence on a silver platter. It was too easy.
The posts started out as photos of Joe entering a bar of some kind. They were a bit blurry from being taken by a passerby across the street. Yet, they were definitely of him. The white dress shirt and chocolate brown slacks from the photo were a simple, signature lineup that you loved on Joe. It was no surprise that he packed them.
Most of the people surrounding Joe were recognizable as other members of the cast. The photo descriptions made it clear that the intent wasn’t even to capture Joe. He was collateral damage of the media frenzy. The account owner gained a large following for being a fan of his female co star. The tall, stylish brunette was the focus of most shots. A few frames later, Joe stepped outside with her for a smoke.
As you kept scrolling, the inconsistencies between photos became more apparent. For starters, Joe was wearing at least six different shirts. You swiped back forth to compare the different posts. The familiar woman was wearing a ruched skirt in one image, a pair of black pants in another, and a tan jumpsuit in the next. This was either an event that required many outfit changes, or these were taken across several nights.
The setting transitioned back and forth between the same bar or outside of a flat. Joe was featured punching in an entry code to a gate, clutching a long paper bag in his other hand.
It’s not that Joe isn’t allowed to drink. He’s a legal adult by a landslide, but sheesh, what happened to the early call times and late nights?
You scrolled through the photos until you could piece together a decent enough timeline. What a shame social media was telling you more about your partner’s whereabouts than your partner himself. You opened the images from last night again and swiped to the end.
Unlike the rest of the photos, there was one set taken from inside of the bar. The quality was noticeably distorted from the dim lighting. The owner must have held their phone at an odd angle to conceal their spywork. Joe had his arm around the familiar co star. One hand was on her opposite shoulder and the other held a shot glass.
Even in still photos, you caught on to Joe’s posture. There was a certain way he stood when he was incredibly drunk and trying to play it off. She was in heels, yet looked small next to him. You missed that feeling and longed from him to envelope you. Although, maybe now it was the floor that you wished would swallow you whole.
As you swiped, the images showed the progression of Joe leaning in to whisper something in her ear. The very last photo zoomed in on the woman, head thrown back in laughter.
Nope.
You shut your phone and tossed it onto the table. You weren’t going to allow your mind to go there. You took any suspicious, intrusive thoughts and shoved them to the far back of your brain.
Let’s examine the facts. Anybody that knows Joe knows what a professional he is. Any interaction between cast members HAD to be strictly friendly.
Just an ounce of self reflection confirmed that foul play between co stars was out of the question. However, just because Joe wasn’t a cheater didn’t mean you weren’t being neglected.
How many times over the past few weeks did he send you a work related excuse and then head out to socialize?
It was so unlike him to ignore you, but it was even more out of character to lie to you.
You reached out and unlocked the phone again. Your fingers flipped back and forth between apps, eyes darting to compare text messages to the dates on tweets. The frantic behavior was emulating crazy girlfriend energy and you knew it, but you trusted your intuition more than anything else.
The photos of Joe carrying liquor into the apartment building jumped out. They were taken last Friday around eleven.
You double checked the only message you received from Joe that day:
Long hours on set tonight. Miss you Xx
sent: 10:35pm
________________________________________
We need to talk. Please call as soon as you can.
It was the first text you fired off after you left work.
You typed and deleted about five different paragraphs but settled on two sentences. Not calling Joe right away took an immense amount of self control. However, a) if this week had been any sign, there was no chance he would pick up during work hours, and b) leaving him a voicemail of accusations risked saying something you didn’t mean.
Joe must of sensed your urgency, because your phone was ringing by the time you reached your car.
“Hi love. I need to run in a few minutes. Is something wrong?” The term of endearment that was normally so comforting now sounded out of place.
Joe’s phone was lying face up. All you could see was a beige ceiling and an aura of light. He fumbled with objects on the other side of the room. You shut the drivers side door and paused, debating on whether it was a good idea to have this conversation while sitting in a parking lot.
“Yes, Joe.” You spoke slowly, trying not to to get ahead of yourself. “I need to see your face. I don’t want you to lie to me anymore.” Something inside of you hoped that once Joe looked you in the eyes, he wouldn’t be able to hold back.
The rummaging stopped. “What on earth are you talking about?”
“Sit down and look at me.”
Footsteps drew closer to the microphone, and static cracked as Joe grabbed the phone from his bed. His face came in to view, mouth slightly open, brows furrowed in shock. You were never this short with him.
Joe sank down to the floor, back against a wall. “What is going on? You’re scaring me.” He shifted uncomfortably in his seat.
“I know why you’ve been ignoring me. I also know how this sounds,” you said hesitantly. “But I’ve seen the photos of you online. You visit the same bar over and over. You were at the same flat nearly every night this week.”
“Are you tracking my every move?” he accused. “You know I’m nearly 30 years old and can handle myself-”
“You said you were at work,” you cut him off. “That’s the problem, Joe. You told me you had late nights filming or needed to go to bed for early call times. When in reality, you care more about your social life than me right now.”
“I can explain-”
“Let me finish. You are allowed to socialize, but you aren’t allowed to lie to me about it. Why are you avoiding me?”
“It’s not a lie. I-”
“Don’t feed me that shit. If you are going to deny it, then I am done. Do whatever you want, but do it without me,” you hissed. The sudden burst of emotion surprised yourself and your face went hot.
“Listen to me for one second!” Joe’s voice cracking in the speaker caught you off guard. You couldn’t recall any other time he has raised his voice at you. He brought a hand up to his forehead and through his hair. Joe had a habit of doing that to self-sooth.
He cleared his throat. “I didn’t tell you the truth, because I just didn’t want to burden you with it. Okay? You just have to trust me.”
“You don’t want to burden me with your drinking habits?” you scoffed. You and Joe told each other everything. Him dodging your questions was so out of line with his usual transparency. It worked you up into a rage.
You were met with a long, heavy silence on the other end. You raised your eyebrows and gestured for him to continue.
No response.
“Fine, don’t talk,” you shrugged. “But I can’t let this go without a better explanation. You deserve all you have going for you, and for the record, I tried my best to make this work.”
Even the suggestion of letting this discussion end unresolved felt like a hit to the chest. They were your own words, yet the seriousness of their implications knocked the wind out of you.
“I can’t believe you won’t trust me!” Joe tossed his hands up in exhaustion. It was clear at this point that you were not going to allow him to sweep this under the rug.
“I can’t believe you lied!” you hissed in return. “I have been so goddamn lonely because you won’t give me the time of day anymore. Can you imagine how that feels? To have your partner avoid you and deny it? To be given no explanation?” Your voice shook and salt crept down into your mouth.
All you ever wanted was his honesty, and for the first time ever, he couldn’t give you that. The corners of your mouth shook as you tried not to let your emotions get the best of you.
Joe’s eyes caught on your wet cheeks. There was a sigh of recognition on the other end of the line.
“Im sorry... I didn’t mean to make you upset,” his tone softened and he averted his gaze. Joe was never able to watch you cry.
You suddenly remembered you were still sitting in the parking lot with only your car windows to separate you from the outside world. You rushed to wipe the tears away with your sleeves.
“This role... it’s so heavy.” Joe looked up at the ceiling like he was searching for the strength to speak. He took in a sharp breath.
“The scenes get extremely dark. I spend so much time getting into the troubled mind of this character, and it makes me feel like a different person.” Joe brought a nervous hand up to his neck.
“I wake up every day and have to act out disturbing things. I got so good at it that I started to feel the pain even when no one was recording. To me, you are a bubble of safety. So, the last thing I wanted to do is bring that nightmarish mentality into our relationship.” His voice was breathless and full of fear at how you might react.
“Joe... I didn’t realize-”
“Don’t. Don’t apologize. Instead of telling you, I suppose I turned to vices. You are right. I’ve been drinking more than usual... smoking too, to be fair,” his voice trailed off shamefully. “I know how it looks, but I just wanted a way to escape without weighing you down. Turns out I’ve done a really shit job of coping.” He looked up at you to gauge a reaction. This time it’s his turn to blink back tears, and for what it’s worth, you could tell he was fighting.
“It’s okay,” you said softly.
“It’s not.” Joe shook his head slowly. “I should’ve realized how lonely it would make you feel.” The way his voice caught in his throat was so sad that it nearly erased all of your anger.
“I would’ve understood.” You stared back at him sympathetically. “I want to know how you are feeling. That’s part of my job description in this relationship, you know.”
Joe looked down at the floor, but you noticed the corners of his lips turn upward ever so slightly. It was the first time during the call that either of you saw the light at the end of the tunnel.
“Do you atleast have someone that will look after you?” you asked.
Joe swiped at his screen and it paused. His image went blurry. “I’m writing myself two reminders,” he said.  You heard the sound of thumbs tapping.
“For what?”
“First, to reach out to the support staff on set. Second, to call you again tonight.” His words were confident and reassuring. They were full of everything you have been missing over the past few weeks.
“I think that’s a great idea.” Your shoulders dropped as you exhaled tension you didn’t even realize you were holding in.
Joe will be gone for a while longer, but somehow it felt like he just returned home.

The South Downs Cottage
Anotation
Once Neil Gaiman said that after the events described in the book "Good Omens" Crowley and Aziraphale would move to a cottage in South Downs, and the Devil's Duke would be perfect for a summer walk. Therefore, with the desire and the opportunity, we decided to imagine what their shared home would look like and tried to take into account the characteristics of each character.
P.S. Yes, we understand that in real life, the rule doesn't work as it does in fictional worlds, where a small house on the outside is much larger on the inside. The cottage gradually turned into a mansion, which honestly worried us a little, but it didn't prevent us from completing the project as we designed it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
About the Cottage
The cottage, to which Crowley and Aziraphale moved after all the events, is a place full of antique charm and tranquility, where they decided to create their own corner of seclusion and privacy. The house was situated on a quiet street in South Downs, where life flowed steadily, and neighbors knew each other by name.
It was a cozy classic cottage, almost entirely covered with ivy up to the very peak of the roof. The facade was adorned with materials traditional to English architecture - natural stone on the walls and base, white wooden frames on the windows, and metal roofing. Even the interior of the house adhered to the classic English style with wooden furniture, warm lighting, and elegantly adorned curtains.
On the first floor, you would find an unusually unique set of rooms. The kitchen, equipped with the latest modern appliances, merged with a spacious living room featuring a dining area, a large soft sofa with a television. The living room also housed a fireplace, creating an atmosphere of warmth and comfort, especially on chilly winter evenings. From the living room, there was access to the outside through a spacious winter garden, where tropical flowers bloomed year-round. The plants there were just as green and splendid as they had been all over England. Of course, a mandatory condition for acquiring the cottage was the presence of a garage for Bentley. But the real gem of the house was the two-story library, which was clearly more spacious on the inside than it appeared from the outside.
The second floor was a quiet, gentle, and romantic place. The main bedroom with a separate bathroom and dressing room, a guest bedroom used only on special occasions, an exit from the rotunda into the corridor leading to a cozy balcony overlooking the settlement. Right above the garage on the first floor was a home theater with an exceptionally well-stocked bar for weekly evening gatherings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Around the house, a shaded garden was laid out in the best traditions of old England: ancient yew trees, luxurious junipers and boxwoods, a branching magnolia combined with lush beds of white and pink roses, delphinium, hollyhocks, and delicate peonies. Neat lawns of perennial grasses, orderly rows of shrubs and trees, and lush flower beds all created a unique image of an old English garden.
In the southern part of the garden was a small pond surrounded by majestic willows, reeds, rushes, and other aquatic plants. In the center of the pond, wooden swings were installed, providing a pleasant spot to observe ducks and feed them with frozen green peas.
Crowley decided that he would spend all his free time in the garden, and if he were to set up a gazebo and a table for evening tea, then in good weather, he could convince the Angel to join him for long sessions in the fresh air.

Warnings: Fluff

The sun peeked through the curtains of your luxurious Manhattan apartment, casting a warm glow across the room. You stretched, the soft sheets of your bed inviting you to linger just a little longer. But today was special. Today marked your anniversary with Howard Stark.
As you swung your legs over the side of the bed, you couldn’t help but smile. Life with Howard was never dull. You loved the way he challenged you, how he sparked your curiosity, and the way he made even the simplest moments feel extraordinary.
You padded into the kitchen, the scent of coffee wafting through the air. Howard was already there, fiddling with a small gadget at the counter, his tie askew as usual. He looked up, a playful grin spreading across his face.
“Morning, genius,” he said, his eyes sparkling with mischief. “I was just about to make breakfast, but I thought maybe I’d invent a new breakfast appliance instead.”
You laughed, leaning against the doorframe. “You know, pancakes are still a thing, right?”
He chuckled, stepping closer to you, the gadget still in his hand. “But wouldn’t it be great if we could just press a button and have them perfectly cooked every time?”
“Only you would find a way to overcomplicate breakfast, Howard,” you teased, taking the gadget from him and placing it on the counter. “How about we just stick to the classics for today?”
He sighed dramatically. “Fine, but only because it’s our anniversary. I’ll save my world-changing ideas for later.” His tone was playful, but you could see the underlying affection in his eyes.
After a leisurely breakfast filled with laughter and playful banter, you headed to the living room. The large windows offered a stunning view of the city, but your attention was drawn to the elegant display on the coffee table—an intricately wrapped box with a note attached.
“Howard, you didn’t have to—” you started, but he waved a hand, his smile broadening.
“Just open it,” he urged, excitement radiating from him.
You carefully unwrapped the box, revealing a stunning bracelet adorned with tiny gears and a small arc reactor charm. It was beautiful and so uniquely him.
“Howard, it’s perfect!” you exclaimed, slipping it onto your wrist. “I love it.”
“Just a little reminder that you’re the heart of my inventions,” he said, his voice low and sincere. “Without you, I’d just be a man with too many gadgets and not enough heart.”
Your heart swelled at his words. You stepped closer, wrapping your arms around him. “You know I love being a part of your world. It’s exhilarating.”
“Speaking of exhilarating,” he said, pulling back slightly, “how about a little field trip?”
Your eyes lit up. “Where to?”
“Just a surprise,” he said, winking. “I promise it’ll be worth it.”
Before you could question him further, he took your hand, leading you out of the apartment and into the bustling streets of Manhattan. The excitement in the air was palpable as you navigated the city together, laughing and teasing each other along the way.
Eventually, he led you to a rooftop helipad, where a sleek helicopter awaited. Your heart raced with anticipation.
“Howard, are you serious?” you gasped, looking at him wide-eyed.
“Only the best for my wife,” he replied, his voice filled with mischief.
The helicopter ride was a whirlwind of exhilaration, the city shrinking beneath you as you soared above the skyline. Howard pointed out various landmarks, his enthusiasm infectious as he talked about his latest projects and ideas.
When you landed on a picturesque hillside just outside the city, you were greeted with a breathtaking view of the horizon. A cozy picnic was set up, complete with your favorite foods and a bottle of champagne.
As you sat together, surrounded by the beauty of nature, you couldn’t help but feel grateful for the life you had built together. Howard poured you a glass, clinking it against his with a smirk.
“To us,” he said, his gaze steady and sincere.
“To us,” you echoed, warmth flooding your chest.
As the sun began to set, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink, you leaned against Howard, feeling the steady beat of his heart beside you. This was more than just an anniversary; it was a reminder of the partnership you had forged—a bond filled with love, laughter, and a little bit of chaos.
“Thank you for today,” you said softly, turning to face him. “You always know how to make everything feel special.”
He smiled, brushing a loose strand of hair behind your ear. “That’s my job, isn’t it? Besides, every day with you is special. You make me want to be better.”
You felt your heart swell at his words, and without thinking, you leaned in to kiss him. It was sweet and tender, a promise of all the adventures still to come.
As you pulled away, he grinned, a hint of mischief in his eyes. “Now, about that pancake machine…”
You rolled your eyes, laughter bubbling up again. “You’re impossible, Howard Stark.”
“Exactly,” he said, winking at you. “And you love it.”
With the sun setting behind you and the world at your feet, you knew that whatever challenges lay ahead, you’d face them together—partners in every sense of the word.

I am so, so fucking tired of the word "luxury" when it comes to housing.
My absolutely horrendous apartment complex, which lays claim to that word on its website, gave me the second-worst anxiety attack I've had since I've lived here today, because of its mismanagement (which incidentally, violates my leasing contract, but probably the best I could really get done pursuing that legally is getting out the lease early without penalty).
My bathroom sink cold faucet barely works, since I moved in over a year ago (I don't place maintenance calls for things that aren't catastrophic issues because I hate having most PEOPLE in my living space, let alone fucking strangers, which was my main issue today). My shower water pressure is just depressing. My kitchen appliances also suck. In terms of amenities, it's anyone's guess at any given time whether the laundry room that's actually near me will be functional. The swimming pool has been closed since I moved in a year and a half ago (not that I'd be using it, but still.)
But this is a luxury apartment complex. Apparently the luxury is rent that's affordable on a 50kish salary (which is not at all appropriate for the engineering PhD I have, or really anyone, because hello social safety net where??? UBI when?), but that's another problem) and not much else.
L O fucking L.
I'm paying at least $400 more in rent and fees for this shithole than I ever did in this city in grad school (2010-2016), and even just the apartment itself when nothing critical is broken and we're disregarding how incompetent management is, is the worst I've ever lived in. Thanks, I hate it.

The rest of the weekend had come and gone. Mostly filled with Mom and I smoothing over the cracks in our new lifestyle. Additional furniture and appliances were acquired. A brilliant, albeit expensive, coffee machine was the best feature of our home now. It made incredible espresso, which had been fueling my moping.
Tonight, Evalin decided we would come together and cook a meal. We decided on grilled salmon with patotoes and asparagus. Simple enough, while also fitting whatever diet my mother had recently taken up.
I was currently plating our meal as she grabbed the salmon off the pan.
Soft footsteps made their way into the dining room, and my mother followed, setting the plate in the centre of the table.
We both pulled out chairs out and sat. Her posture was straight and rigid. Always the perfectionist.
I sat with one leg dangling, the other curled up into me. A posture my father absolutely loathed.
"Well, I'd say we are quite the chefs." My mother remarked, piling delicate amounts of food onto her plate.
"Not bad," I laugh. "For us. Better than yesterday for sure," I say, following her and scooping a helping of each into my own plate.
Yesterday we had burnt the chicken thighs we had bought, then promptly ordered a gluten free, veggie filled pizza.
"I'm not used to a gas stovetop. But, that simply means a new skill, hm?" She says, between bites of food. Never speaking with her mouth open.
"Sure, Mom."
She regards me, and then her gaze flits back to her plate. I continue eating. The only noise in the room is that of our breathing and the scrapes of our cutlery on the new plates.
Dinners together in my family were rare. With Mom and Dad both spending evenings working overtime, I ate alone almost every night. It made me into quite the skilled chef, but left me feeling empty. Dinners alone, in our big kitchen, only accompanied by the noises of the outside world. I would often sit at the island in our luxurious marble kitchen, perched as I am now, and pretend my parents were there, engaging with me.
Some evenings Phillipa was there, and would keep me company, but as the sole gaurdians to Dorian, and his younger brother Hollin, those evenings were few and far between. She worked as an in house maid, and mostly cleaned during the day when the boys would be at school. Sometimes cooking and leaving me meals with cute sticky notes attached.
Those days were far behind.
My mother's fork scraped her plate. "So," she started. "You start highschool tomorrow, how do you feel?"
Awful. I have no friends. "Fine" I say.
"You have a cousin here," and her face is a little pale as she says it. Her eyes scan my own. Searching for whatever feeling she assumes will follow.
I just scoff.
The nonchalant way she tosses that out chafes against me. My image of my family has always been just my parents and I. The idea of a cousin on top of the move, on top of Mom and Dad’s issues. Its as if the tide is rising, and I have no sense of direction, no way to swim up because I no longer know where that is.
Tossing down my cutlery, I shift to move my other knee up so I can wrap my arms around my body, creating a safe little shell.
"And how old is this cousin?" My eyes stare directly into her, not backing down.
"Your age. Maybe a few months older."
"Why am I just now learning about their existence?"
She looks pained. I feel like that's an expression I've seen so often on her face recently. So different from the Evalin Galathynius that imposed through the courts of Rifthold.
She moves closer to the table so she can drop her head into her hands. She just shakes her head, and I sit across from her wondering how the fuck we ended up in this situation.
As an only child, I've never wished for any other siblings. Seeing how Hollin and Dorian interacted made me glad of that. But a cousin? A possibility of an aunt or uncle? There being more to my family than just Rhoe, Evalin and Aelin? That's what seems nonsensical.
"Your father and I left Orynth not long after your birth for our own reasons, and yes, that separated you and Aedion," she takes a deep breath. "But it was not without extreme thought, and we realized it would be better… this way."
"Better for me? Or better for Dads job?" I bite out.
"For everyone Aelin,"
"Mmkay "
"What do you think about this? About Aedion?" She probes.
"Never met him. How would I know."
"He's attending Orynth Rise. You'll probably see him there."
"And what do I do? Walk up to some mysterious stranger and say, "Oh hi there! I'm your cousin you've probably never heard of or even know!""
"He knows about you." She smiles sheepily.
I just stare at her.
A cousin. That apparently knows about meet, whom I've never met, or heard about.
"Is this why we moved to Orynth?" I ask quietly.
"A part of it," she nods then continues to eat.
I want to pull my hair out.
"For fucks sake mom! Give me a straight answer!" I bark out, no longer composed.
Her face snaps up, and her mouth is open in a shocked expression. "Aelin Galathynius! Do not curse at me! Good Gods!"
I roll my eyes, and drop my legs back down to the floor. Pushing out of my chair, my meal only halfway eaten, I grab my plate and storm off to the kitchen.
Maybe I'm overreacting, but after moving across the continent, and not really adjusting to the fact that my entire life is now somehow different, plus the fact I have extended family, is really overdoing it for me currently.
I scrape the food left on my plate into the little compost bin, and move to put my plate in the sink. I can hear my mother stomping over to the kitchen.
"Aelin!" She yells.
I ignore her.
She moves towards me and grabs the plate from my hands. And I stare up at her, forcing calm.
"Why are you acting this way!" She yells, looking far angrier than she was moments ago. "Look, love, I understand this is a big change, but you've been moping and overreacting to everything!" She's put the plate down and her arms come to rest on my shoulders, I shake her off.
Her face falls.
"Aelin," her voice is soft, like trying to tame a wild animal. And I guess I'm the wild animal right now, dramatically scurrying away from anything that scares me.
I'm trapped here, between Mom and the door from the kitchen, and paralyzed by the change in my life, far too swift for anyone to keep afloat in.
I clench my jaw and shove my fear and anger and confusion down, down as far as it can go.
Through clenched teeth, I bite out, "I don't know how you want me to react." Surprising myself with how calmly in responding, I continue. "I don't understand why we're in Orynth. I don't understand why we had to leave Rifthold. I don't understand why Dad's not here with us. I don't understand this place. And I don't understand why you think I'm okay with all of this." I finish. Taking a deep breath, I school the emotion off my face.
Mom blinks.
I stand still, breathing slightly uneven.
"Aelin…" she trails off, eyes moving to the ceiling.
"We're going in circles Mom, around and around over the same thing." I clench my fists at my side and take a deep breath. "Just be fucking honest for once."
Her eyes snap right back to me the moment I say 'fucking' and I can see her about to snap at me again, but stops when she sees the expression on my face.
"Your Dad and I have been having issues. I felt as thought it was not fair for you to be in a house where your parents were always fighting." She responds. Her eyes move quickly over my face, and she stands straighter.
I suppose I should take this as some sort of win. Getting Evalin to admit to any of her faults, especially in the realm of her shitty husband, is a hard won feat. But the admittance is something hard to swallow as well.
Having loving parents is nothing I grew up around, and the only friend I truly grew close to in my childhood was Dorian, and his parents both died early in his life, not long after his brother was born. But Phillipa was the most adoring parent one could truly ask for. Though she was never around long enough to be a mother figure.
But to actually hear your parent admit a struggle - that makes me feel a way I can't describe.
"Okay." I say.
Evalin just nods. Her arms come up around herself, and her eyes get misty.
"Aelin, I want the best for you. And being in that house wasn't the best for any of us," She whispers.
"Okay " I say again, processing.
"Can… can I hug you?"
I feel funny, and I don't really want to hug Mom right now, but she looks seconds away from crumbling into jagged pieces that will never fit back together. So I nod and pull her into a light hug.
She holds onto me for dear life, and I hear a sniffle, before she's pulling away and wiping her eyes.
"I'm sorry,"
"It's okay," I repeat, like a broken record.
"I'm gonna clear up dinner, and you can, uh, go get r-ready for school tomorrow." She squeezes her eyes shut as a few more tears fall.
And I don't know how to handle this situation, so I just walk away.
-
In my room later that night, I'm sitting at the bay window going over the catastrophe that was dinner this evening. I've washed my face, and I'm in a silk nightgown. My fingers skim the hemline, and my thoughts race.
Mom admitted she and Dad were having problems, so the lipstick on Dad's collar probably wasn't hers. Still unconfirmed, but I'm certainly closer to that truth.
But a move across the continent because they were having issues? Completely uprooting me and my future education, in favour of Orynths shiny promises?
They must have really been fighting this time.
I've recieved no messages from my Dad in the few days we've been here, and I wonder if he's forgotten his wife and offspring.
The street outside my window is quiet. The boys down the street aren't out. And the wind flows gently, winding through avenues, luring the inhabitants to sleep.
Tomorrow marks my first day in highschool. Freshman year. In a completely different country. Oh, and with a cousin! I can't help but smile a little at that. How shocking that Rhoe and Evalin keep my cousin from me.
I can't help but wonder what he's like. I never knew that my parents had siblings, so what he might look like is a mystery. My fathers light complexion and dark hair, or my mothers darker complexion and gold-spun hair. I imagine a boy similar to me. It seems more reasonable that Evalin would have siblings rather than Rhoe. He was never much of the family type.
I wonder what he’s interested in. I wonder about his life here. I wonder about this new extension of my family and what I've missed not knowing they existed. I wonder about my aunt and uncle. Maybe theres more?
I guess Ill find out tomorrow.
My backpack is packed, filled with a few notebooks and journals. Pencils and pens. My laptop and other school necessities.
I'm not overly excited to start school again, nonetheless in Orynth, where most of these kids probably have known each other since early childhood.
A light rain starts, it's soothing noise lulls me to sleep at the window. And I dream of unconditional love.
