top 10 things i cooked in 2023
this year i made 104 unique recipes (plus lots of duplicates when i liked something enough to make it multiple times). the places i went to most for recipes were feasting at home + the NYT recipes app, although i very much liked the weekday vegetarians, love and lemons, cookie & kate, nora cooks, and the foodie takes flight.
my top 10, in no particular order:
NYT ricotta pasta with roasted broccoli and crispy chickpeas (super simple but a great yummy pasta to make real quick for friends. I roasted the broccoli instead of broiling and added lots of extra lemon zest, garlic, red pepper flakes, and a tray of oven-roasted chickpeas)
moroccan vegetable tagine (i blended a bunch of recipes but the one linked was my starting point. this is the one form i like butternut squash in lol. modifications: i went heavy on all the spices but especially the cinnamon and cardamom, added chopped dried apricots to the stew for extra sweetness, and threw in a bunch of extra veggies. yum)
indian-ish nachos with cheddar, black beans and chutney (do NOT skip the multiple chutneys and sauces. it will seem like too much work you will say can't i just make one and be done with it but those sauces are where the magic lies. the great tragedy of these nachos is that i wanted to eat them for DAYS but they do not reheat well. but godddd they were good)
ottolenghi's green pancakes with lime butter (these are SO easy. great for brunch but also make delicious additions to your lunch for a couple days after. also it's a perfect way to eat a pound of spinach and feel very virtuous about it when really you just ate delicious jalapeno-y scallion pancakes. the lime butter is great but it's a lot of work so i usually just top these with some sour cream mixed with a lil bit of lime zest & lime juice)
cauliflower shawarma with spicy tahini sauce (YUM! the tahini sauce as written was too bitter for me with the cholula mixed in. i think i'd try it with sriracha next time so it was a little sweeter. i also added chickpeas yum)
roasted cauliflower daal with chickpeas (my notes say this was "OUTTA THIS WORLD DELICIOUS" but also note that it will "really clean you out GI-wise" lol. lentils always have that effect on me though so ymmv. i added bell pepper, roasted the cauliflower first, cooked the lentils most of the way soft in the rice cooker instead of on the stove, and added two chopped serrano peppers with seeds to give it a lil extra kick. i would recommend halving the recipe if you are cooking for one as there were TONS of leftovers and my GI system could not handle being cleansed that many times lol)
pasta with corn, tomatoes, "onion-bacon," and basil (this method of preparing onions really should not taste like bacon and yet it sort of does????? this was a summer recipe i made multiple times for a range of audiences and it was a hit every time. originally from the weekday vegetarians)
creamy corn pasta (THIS HAS NO RIGHT BEING AS GOOD AS IT IS. IT'S SO SIMPLE AND YET IT'S THE BEST THING I'VE EVER TASTED I COULD EAT IT FOR DAYS. WE ATE IT ALL SUMMER)
ottolenghi's very full roasted veggie tart (it will take you hours to make and no time at all to consume but oh my god it's so good and SUCH a satisfying way to spend a long weekend afternoon. liz and i loved this so much we had to have a serious sitdown to discuss how we would divvy up the leftovers because we felt it could seriously damage our friendship if one of us ate all of it)
bombay burritos (the little sauces and things take a long time to make but you can prep a lot of the stuff a day or two in advance and gosh these are so tasty!! the curried mashed potatoes YUM)
honorable mentions:
ottolenghi's mango soba noodles (skip the eggplant i'd do tofu or something instead)
braised tofu with basil (i made this with a veggie-loaded stir fry and topped it with a fried egg)
this carrot cake (it took forever to make but it was the best carrot cake i've ever had and the only thing i'll ever make on my bday from here on out). she also has a pumpkin cake recipe that is so good and much simpler to make (no grating required)
momofuku's ginger scallion tofu with crispy coconut rice (the recipe is for a shrimp version but we made it with tofu and it was very yummy. i made this at a friend's house and it was so good i wanted to ask to take home some of the leftovers but decided that was too rude ahaha)
and then of course i gotta give a shoutout to my #1 comfort foods this year, SHAKSHUKA (my beloved) + a caprese sandwich with balsamic glaze served on really good bread.

Things my friends have said out of context (June 2023 edition)
* FEEL FREE TO SHARE AS YOU PLEASE, NO CREDIT NEEDED. CHANGE PRONOUNS OR ANYTHING ELSE AS DESIRED.
INTENSE ISLAND MECHANICS.
Magic bad.
Are you Irish for the night?
Now you can uninstall forever.
WELL IT'S ALMOST 1 AM FOR ME.
MAN SHE REALLY DOES HATE ME.
Bruh I had 100 nuggies in one day.
WHY THE FUCK IS [name] IN LOS ANGELES AND NAKED ON A BEACH?
[name] jingled the right keys for me.
DO WE HAVE A NEW LORD OF LIES?
There's already a character I really want to spill the guts of.
So I learned [name] owns a sub, and that sub has made it to the bottom of five of the seven seas.
It do not move around. It only go up. And down. No forward or back. Not even side to side.
Rotation is on thin ice, mister.
So what they be saying is magic is literally killing the planet.
Today’s stream is sponsored by the letter A. Why is that? Because you’re gonna hear a lot of AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
Nuh. I’m not about fancy life.
QUICK, HOW DO I INTERACT WITH PEOPLE AGAIN?
Wait I can't get away with that. This is not a receptionist job.
I want to smack people with a nuggie.
They hit your brain.
My tiredness is maxed out.
I don’t even know how many Godzilla movies he owns at this point.
A [name] with no bread is not a [name].
I am all kinds of confusion.
And now I sit here and unwind into the abyss.
It’s fine. Y’all know Japanese right?
Just ask her if she can download gas for the car.
You know, I’m starting to scare myself. I’m remembering things. My memory is working better.
Are you experiencing pain for how these people used that rice cooker?
Do you experience pain or do you experience the jolt of adventurous inspiration?
YOU CAN’T HIDE FROM ME, I HAVE TWITCH NOTIFICATIONS.
I bit into a well beyond expired donut an hour ago. I didn't notice because my sense of smell is basically non existent, and it tasted sour.
Okay even though this donut is supposed to have like every nutrient ever why does it taste like extra sour sourdough bread?
So either I have consumed a bite of a mold ridden burger or I'm going to explode into spiders. Both options I'm not a fan of.
I have consumed potate. Egg. And 10 charcoal tablets.
Now, I like deep dish personally, but uhh. My dad decided deep dish wasn’t deep enough, and created pizza cake.
He’s describing his character as if it’s not him and it’s just him.
I SWEAR I HIT THE BUTTON AND IT SOUNDED LIKE [name] WAS YELLING AT ME "GET THE FUCK-"
Tell [name] I said happy birfingdai and he'll get the best Godzilla movie, 1998 Godzilla.
So are you good now or still busy with the animaminals?
Would you rather that or unga red bunga red?
You forgot the toaster bath.
I want to bring my Switch to its knees, just like I had my PS4 turn into a jet engine.
So she was like "FUCK HUMANITY I HOPE THEY ALL ROT AND YOU KNOW WHAT I'M GOING TO TRAP EVERYONE IN AN ENDLESS LOOP".
They solve everyone but their own problem.
Can't fucking believe we actually did a bank heist.
Tiptoeing death is a [name] maneuver.
I’ll keep [name] to myself then.
Say hi and hope you don't fuck up. Freeze in place and smile awkwardly. If not, just freeze and hope they just ignore you.
I WANNA SMACK PEOPLE WITH KETCHUP OR A NUGGIE.
What if I smack you with a bag of Doritos? Or a giant cookie?
Traditional hot pot doesn't have spam.
Would you like a pizza pen?

There is nowhere else I can talk about my life, and I need to get this out.
So my life recently fell apart. To be fair the only thing that had been holding it together was hope and fear.
After I had COVID and anemia related to COVID I pretty much lost all my spoons/tenacity for the entirety of 2022.
Most days from Jan til around November 2022 my anemia related symptoms would cause me to just fall asleep. Didn't matter if I had enough sleep, if I sat down I would fall asleep and stay asleep 80% of the time.
Needless to say 2022 was a waste. Mostly. I got no art done because it was just stress the whole year.
Because of my "near death" experience with COVID-19 and MORE. In may 2022 after 15 YEARS of being without, I decided to get a puppy.
Best decision of that entire shit year.
Then,
I thought my marriage would survive because we had been through much worse. but it didn't. Two weeks before Christmas he told me he no longer loved me and was leaving. Because my depression was too much and eternal. Or what ever. I don't care anymore.
And he was gone within a week after that.
I threw out the Christmas tree and anything associated with it. What was the point.
And I was alone. At least I had a Dog 🐕.
I was seriously considering offing myself. I threw out all my cooking knives and all the things I had accumulated in my kitchen for my future family. Everything. What was the point.
I have 1 pan, 1 plate, 1 spoon, 1 cup, 1 fork. Rice cooker.
I threw out the toaster. Like to throw from the balcony. Cause toast was his thing.
It's just me now.
My lease ends on May 26 2023.
Money is super tight.
I may go homeless. Even though I work full time @ $19 hr
It's just fuking useless.
I haven't drawn anything at all.
At least I have a dog 🐕

November 19th, 2023
Alright, so here's the sit*:
I am trying to stabilize my finances and monthly budgets. I think I've figured out a method of mandatory/discretionary spending that will work for me, and with a bit of effort, I'm on track to make that by 12/4 (and get ahead of it by 12/18, if I can control my spending).
BUT -- it leaves very little room for spending on groceries that aren't absolutely necessary. Also there's a major food holiday coming up here in America and the grocery stores are going to be nuts.
So the theme of this week is "Dry Ingredients"
We're talking beans, quinoa, split peas, rice, flour, cornmeal, etc. Also my canned stuff--tomatoes, more beans, some corn i think? And anything I've got frozen--mostly stir-fry-ready vegetables and spaghetti bolognese sauce.
Possibilities for red beans:
https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1020816-vegan-slow-cooker-red-beans-and-rice?smid=ck-recipe-android-share
https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1021035-baked-rajma-punjabi-style-red-beans-with-cream?smid=ck-recipe-android-share
Possibilities for black beans:
https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1018592-best-black-bean-soup?smid=ck-recipe-android-share
https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1013062-cuban-black-beans?smid=ck-recipe-android-share
Possibilities for quinoa:
https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1014450-spiced-yellow-lentils-with-quinoa?smid=ck-recipe-android-share
https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1015995-crisp-quinoa-cakes-with-almonds-rosemary-and-dijon?smid=ck-recipe-android-share
I've also got potatoes and sugar snap peas.
so, from all that:
Tentative Menu
Yellow Lentils with Quinoa
Vegan Red Beans and Rice
Huevos Rancheros for breakfast/lunch
which implies making refried beans (here) and salsa (roughly based on this)
Celery Toasts
using this recipe (to deal with extra celery): https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1018356-celery-toasts?smid=ck-recipe-android-share
Focaccia
this recipe for bread for the week: https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1021036-focaccia?smid=ck-recipe-android-share
so from all that:
Grocery List
(not including most ingredients, which i already have)
3 yellow or white onions
garlic
cilantro
1 big red bell pepper
1 green bell pepper
celery
onion powder
fresh thyme (if it's still on sale)
eggs
half and half
2-3 fresh chiles
bleau cheese
Plan
Sunday
Make salsa and refried beans
Huevos Rancheros for dinner
Make bread dough and set to rise overnight
Start soaking red beans
Monday
Bake bread
Make red beans and rice
Prep for celery toasts
Tuesday
Doing a separate date night dinner thing
Wednesday
Set quinoa soaking in the morning
Set split peas soaking in the afternoon
Make quinoa and lentils
*sit as in short for situation, a shortening made known to me by my youngest sister when I was trying to get ahold of her at 5:30 on a Saturday morning (one of my nipple piercings fell out overnight--well, "fell out"--and I needed to know if she had spare jewelry to hold it open until I could get to the piercer's after work, since I had lost mine.)

October Occurrences 2023
Tumblr media
Above Photo: This backyard is all I need sometimes
That was one of the longest Octobers I’ve ever experienced and it couldn’t have been better. Here’s everything that went down last month:
The best tweets of October can be found over here, and I also did a post about the best Halloween tweets.
Our costume!
I started doing weekly Fall Fridays recaps because I can’t shut the hell up.
Made Halloween cake pops with Maya with meltable chocolate from Michaels (the funfetti vanilla is the best one) and I think these might be among my favourite desserts now. Nothing says ‘I’m almost 40’ like discovering how good cake pops are 15 years after they became popular?
Tumblr media
Above Photo: Maya’s Halloween cake pops
Got a drink at Beetle House (the Beetlejuice-esque bar in the East Village) and that place is a party. Cocktails with dry ice should be mandatory at all bars for the prices we’re paying these days (I’d run on this platform alone if I were up for mayor).
Tumblr media
Above Photo: Cocktail from Beetle House, NYC
I used a few of the single packets of the Dennis Gross triple eye serum and I could really see slight results in only a couple days. So annoying when expensive skincare products actually work well.
This chicken marsala remains one of my favourite top three dinners to make.
Tumblr media
Above Photo: It’s a tall order, but please serve this chicken marsala at my funeral
TIP: if a recipe calls for softened butter but you forgot to soften it in advance, you should just brown the butter instead. This works for me literally every time. Browned butter is incredible.
Finally went to the Oscar Wilde bar and it was beautifully decorated for Halloween. It also had one of the best lighted washrooms I’ve ever seen in NYC.
instagram
It’s one week into November so have I already had the Thanksgiving dumplings from Mimi Cheng’s as well as the Bobbie (Thanksgiving) sandwich from Capriotti’s? We both know the answer, don’t make me say it.
Made pecan pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, but they were only okay. I think I’ll steer clear of the baking recipes from Bon Appétit for awhile. Independent bloggers almost always have better dessert recipes.
Tumblr media
Above Photo: Underwhelming pecan pumpkin chocolate chip cookies
Okay, the flagship Nordstrom in Manhattan? New favourite place to shop for dresses. There’s also a great happy hour bar on the fifth floor with this incredible locker that charges your phone while you walk around.
I’ve made the Chrissy Teigen jalapeno corn pudding for the past few years as part of our Thanksgiving meal and I might finally be sick of it? Looking for new corn recipes.
Tumblr media
Above Photo: Jalapeno corn pudding
My favourite freezable meal right now is this short rib bolognese.
Walked through a section of Central Park that I’d never seen before (the north woods) and it felt like an entirely different park.
Tumblr media
Above Photo: Look at that little face
Made apple cider doughnut cookies that turned out great. I thought the cinnamon sugar topping sounded a bit boring, but it was perfect.
Tumblr media
Above Photo: Apple cider doughnut cookies
It is both a blessing and a curse that I learned of Nuts Factory existence (it’s basically American Bulk Barn).
Made this coconut chicken tikka masala in the slow cooker and it was pretty good. I doubt I’ll make it again though because I never cook rice anymore and this is a recipe begging for rice. (Why don’t I like to cook rice? Um, it takes forever? And I threw out my rice cooker because I hate having useless appliances that I’ll use once a year.)
The focaccia ready-made sandwiches at Eataly? Holy shit. Unbelievably good.
Tumblr media
Above Photo: Focaccia sandwiches at Eataly, NYC
Went to Canada for Thanksgiving and it was so lovely, as always.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some things I watched:
Sabrina The Teenage Witch (the movie): I had no idea it was a movie before it was a show. I’ll always love Melissa Joan Hart as Sabrina, so this was a great find.
Urban Legend: totally forgot about how good this movie was. With the exception of the dog-in-a-microwave scene, obviously.
Knock At The Cabin: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, M. Night Shyamalan’s movies are always so hit or miss and this one? STUNK. I really hate that he insists on making cameos in them, too.
Prom Night: Great! Jamie Lee Curtis is a phenomenal dancer. Nobody talks about that.
Blades: it’s literally just a Jaws parody but with a lawnmower instead of a shark. So what I’m saying is that it was fantastic.
Trick R Treat: so terrible.
Halloween (the Rob Zombie one): UGH! Awful! Nathan claims that I hated it because apparently I don’t like “dysfunction or reality.” WHO DOES.
Coherence: so good! Everyone should see it.
The Fog: loved it! So fun when the villain is weather. And I LOVE the fact that when it was first released, they installed fog machines in some movie theatres where the movie was showing. God, that’s great.
Some things I’m looking forward to this month: Nathan’s big Gramercy show this weekend, buying new cookware finally because our pots specifically are pretty toxic, might make these salted chocolate pecan pie bars for (fake) Thanksgiving later this month and I can’t wait to finally eat at the Christmas restaurant in the city Rolf’s.
If you’ve got any interest in reading last month’s roundup, you can see what went on in September over here. And my autumn highlights on Instagram can be found here.

A small shopping list (floss and more)
A small shopping list (floss and more) https://seths.blog/2023/09/a-small-shopping-list-floss-and-more/ Here are some books and household items that I wanted to share. I’m mostly into audiobooks these days–a good narrator combined with a good author is pretty rare and wonderful… It turns out that a breakthrough rice cooker is a bargain, even if it seems expensive at first. The Cuckoo is an extraordinary device. It comes in many shapes and colors, most of them will not be to your taste, but persist until you find one. Nasty, Brutish and Short, is the most accessible and fun book on philosophy you’ll encounter this year. King: A Life, is a clear and direct biography of one of our greatest citizens. My friend Nicole has written a provocative, funny and honest memoir. Nothing Is Missing: A Memoir of Living Boldly. I’ll be interviewing her in NYC on October 9. Unsurprisingly, the best gluten-free pasta in the world comes from Italy. Herbie Hancock’s autobiography is worthwhile even if you’re not a jazz fan. An honest look at a creative’s journey. No, I’m not an expert on dental floss, but not only is this biodegradable (most competitors are made of plastic) but it actually seems to work a lot better. Dan Ariely’s book Misbelief is a must-listen for anyone trying to understand how social dynamics are changing the way some people see the world. There are two kinds of kitchens: happy ones with air fryers, and the holdouts that have let their skepticism get in the way. I hardly ever use my oven anymore. I’m not sure it matters which brand you buy. Years later, Kafka on the Shore remains one of my favorite all-time audiobooks. It’s an extraordinary story, beautifully told. The Song of Significance has led to more heartfelt emails to me than any book I’ve ever written. And my calendar pre-sold so well they’ve just asked me to write a new edition. None of this would be possible without you. Thanks to everyone who supports the work of authors and musicians and creators…
