It was April 29th again.

How long had it been since the last one? A couple weeks? 365 days? A lifetime? You weren't sure, but the earth had once more completed a circle without you even assimilating the last one.

Your body still ached from phantom pains - a non-existent weight in your left ring finger, the impact of a car crash you never lived, shards of a still broken heart and loss, dear lord, so much loss. How could someone even lose something that they already no longer have?

But every April 29th reopened a wound barely stitched together and you felt the burden of another year lost, a multitude of days that could've been lived as someone's wife but instead barely could be called a widow - after all, there was no wedding. There was only a white dress, a pair of rings and a call from the hospital that sent you into a spiral of unfortunate events and ripped your soul from your body.

Every April 29th brought a slew of what-ifs and if-onlys that buried you under the avalanche of painful possibilities. If that driver had never been drinking, if he had left earlier, if the wedding had been scheduled to the next saturday... Every minimal detail added to insurmountable strands - different paths and roads that could've been taken in a different life.

In a different life, you could've been Yoongi's wife.

In a different life, you could've kissed him on an altar and went on to start a new chapter written together. You could've watched him put together your shared furniture, made him coffee and kissed his pink tinted knucles. In a different world, you could've built a family together, slanted eyed babied and fluffy brown dogs, maybe even a black cat. In another universe, you would've watched someone's first steps guided by his long fingers wrapped around a tiny chubby wrist. In a separate world...

"Love" someone called snapping you out of your morbid fantasies and you turned to see Namjoon offering his hand.

You took it and stood up from the ground, interlacing your fingers with his and bringing them to your lips as you walked away from the forget-me-not adorned grave, silent and contemplative. In another life, things could've been different, but in this one you were given catastrophic grief by fate and its antidote by the same hand. The same prophecy that had taken away Yoongi from your sobbing grip had gifted you Namjoon.

Namjoon who also lost his best friend and had been the first one to reach for you as crumbled to the floor in a white gown; who had been forever patient and understanding, a buoy in the storm as disgrace had rained from the skies ; who stood back to back with you as you leaned on each other to stand up once more ; Namjoon who bought the forget-me-nots and took you where you needed every April 29th.

"I miss him" you said.

Namjoon nodded "Me too. Everyday."

Namjoon helped you into the car and drove away softly, his hand never leaving yours, tethering you to this lifetime where you were now his, six years after being someone else's.

“The X-Files, the damn X-Files,” Namjoon mutters to himself, reclipping his tie to his shirt–he wasn’t a real detective yet, he didn’t need to look like one yet either. 

He takes slow, dragging steps towards the door in the corner of the precinct. He dreads opening the door, his distaste increasing when he hears the loud shuffling of papers and quiet rock music barely making it past the door. Fuck it. 

He swings the door open to be met with complete and utter chaos. The office is far past disorganized. There are files everywhere, tapes, cameras, and photographs all placed haphazardly across both wooden desks. He cringes when he notices the boxes filled with the same materials stacked all around the room. Not to mention the overflowing drawers with papers practically falling out of them.

The sound of papers being tugged out of a drawer catches his attention, the cacophony leading him to see a figure slumped over a file cabinet, sipping hot chocolate from a ‘repurposed’ ramen styrofoam cup. Awkwardly, he clears his throat. “Hello?”

You snap to look at him, a distressed looking uniform hanging from your figure. Swallowing the coco in your mouth, you greet him excitedly, “Oh, hi there. You must be Namjoon, right? My new partner?”

Not for long, he thinks to himself, before nodding. “That would be me. You’re [Y/N], right?”

“Yes I am. Are you excited to be in the SIU?”

“Not really, I’m sort of a skeptic, to be honest. Ghosts and cryptids and all that aren’t really my thing, I prefer science,” Namjoon says, eyes wandering the towers of paperwork.

You scrunch your face at the slight bit of arrogance in his tone, but shrug it off. “Oh, can’t relate. Personally, I’m a believer. You spend a while here and you might become one as well.”

“Jimin, what are you talking about?” you groaned, huffing at the owls doing their morning post rounds, and shoving a warm croissant in your mouth. 

“You’ve literally been glowing since last night,”

“What are you two on about now?” Yoongi groaned, rubbing his head and pouring himself coffee as he slid in the seat next to you and Jimin. “Don’t you two have O.W.L.s later?”

“Princess here has been glowing after sneaking out last night,” Jimin grinned, waggling  his eyebrows at you.

“Mh,” Yoongi nodded, “and why do I care?”

“Because a certain bunny best friend of ours is basically bouncing around the Great Hall.”

At this Yoongi turned, glancing at Jungkook, who was practically shaking with excitement as he ate. “Ah, now that’s interesting.”

“Right!” Jimin exclaimed, immediately pouting his signature pout, “That’s why I want answers.”

“Nothing happened, Min!” You argued, not even sparing him a glance. He could read you like an open book, and the time you spent with Jungkook was to be just between the two of you for now.

“Liar-” he started, but you stood up  before he could continue.

“I’m going to study for our O.W.L.s, you should study too, Min.”

As you walked away you could hear Jimin beg Yoongi to ask you about Jungkook. And with a smile you pushed the doors open. Yoongi wouldn’t ask you anything about Kook. You knew that for a fact.

Your jitters were nowhere to be seen as you made your way into the Great Hall with the rest of your class. The potions O.W.L was finally here, and all you could think about was Jungkook’s fingers on your lips. 

So no, you weren’t the perfect student, but could anyone blame you for being sucked into his bunny smile and addicting personality. 

God what was wrong with you!

You and Jimin slid into the benches of the Great Hall. Your nerves still not catching up to you yet. Your heart was in your throat for another reason. 

With a soft smile, Jungkook sat across from you. All you could focus on was his face. The way his lips moved as he joked with Jimin. His grin enchanting you. 

His whisper of “good luck,” was barely enough to drag you from the spiral you where having about his beauty. 

You took one look at the test in front of you and swore you would do your best without Jungkook distracting you. 

It didn’t work.

It took you at least 20 minutes to focus on the test in front of you. But, after you got it together and your nerves finally caught up to you, you began. Quills scribbled all around you, students furiously writing their answers to each question. 

You were glad you were as good at potions as you were, because of your late start you wouldn’t have finished in time. Turning in your essay paper with a minute to spare you shot Jungkook a wide smile. He stood up a few seconds later, giving you a thumbs up while he walked past you towards the front podium.

When you and your friends convened outside of the hall it was Jungkook who wore a cocky grin.

“I mean, there wasn’t a single question I hadn’t already practiced!” He enthused.

“You’re welcome,” you laughed, “Now who has been saying all of this shit about me?”

“Oh um-” Jungkook started, glancing nervously between Tae and Jimin.

“Don’t tell me that’s what you agreed to,” Tae groaned. Shooting Jungkook a meaningful glance before continuing, “You wouldn’t want to know sweetheart, it’ll just hurt your feelings.”

“She agreed to it Tae, she deserves to know,” Jimin rolled his eyes. 

“Just tell me, Kook,” you said, “I want to know.”

“Fine, just promise you won’t get mad?”

“It was you all along, wasn’t it?” You half groaned, dread filling your gut at the thought.

“It wasn’t me,” Kook said, shooting one more look to the boys before taking a deep breath, “It was Tae.”

1) Probably not. I think he was pretty certain towards the end of their relationship that this wasn’t going to work and he needed to end it. there’s no regret with a decision as certain as that one. 2) I left it kind of open so readers can assume whatever they want. But for indulgence purposes, I’m inclined to say yes LOL 3) one thing OC would never be able to guess - garlic powder.
