It's unsettling to me how much vitriol some people have for Mol, Mayrina, and Zevlor.
Mol is a child who has presumably lost her parents, has a badly scarred face from presumably some sort of traumatic event, and has been through literal Hell (Avernus). Yes, she is making bad decisions and is a bad influence on the other kids. But the adults in her life have failed to protect her, so her experiences have taught her that she and her friends need to look out for themselves, however they can. Even her deal with Raphael is rooted in the desire to protect them and herself from more harm.
Mayrina is grieving a dead husband, and people are not always rational when grieving. She genuinely thinks the hag will give her baby a better life than she will be able to. She does not owe the player thanks when we decide to step in. And she grows a lot by Act 3, once she's had time to process things.
Zevlor was mind controlled for like 30 seconds. He didn't betray anyone. If the player or any companion has ever been charmed or had any sort of effect in combat that made them lose control, they are no better than Zevlor. And the thing that was used to mind control Zevlor was an image of him protecting his people, of his people's safety. That was the one thing that was more important to him than anything, and it was used against him.
I know it's just a game and people can do what they want and hate who they want, but. I think some people are immediately writing these characters off because they're "annoying" or because they don't act how the player wants them to or because you have to actually talk to them and listen and give them a chance to learn more of their story or see their growth.

I recently went through the Auntie Ethel quest in BG3 and immediately remembered your Roisia cooing over Conner. <3
AAAA! I'm so flattered you thought of Roisia during that scene!!
They've polished up Connor's zombie model since I made that comic, so here's Roisia's updated commentary.

These naughty bg3 confession blogs have integrated themselves so much into my fantasies now (not complaining) that as I play the game, my mind wanders to places and scenarios it otherwise wouldn’t (also not complaining). Just now, I went to save Mayrina from the hag and Astarion took a risk by attacking one of the illusions of Mayrina conjured up by the hag. As it was a 50/50 chance of the illusion actually being Mayrina, the real Mayrina sighed ‘oh, thank Gods’ when he made the right choice.
Thanks so just because he voiced concern over her wellbeing before the fight and then the two happened to be standing together when he made his attack and Mayrina expressed her relief, now I can’t stop thinking about Astarion fucking the life out of Mayrina somewhere in the swamps after saving her life and showing her in many, many delectable ways that there is DEFINITELY more to life than hanging out with a zombie husband. I bet that girl never had an orgasm or four like that ever before (sorry Connor).

Thinking about that line Mayrina yells saying fuck you to the hag for making her think she’d be a bad mother. Her voice. She sounds so relieved. So triumphant. Like she can believe now she can be enough. She can do it.
I just love her and I love her storyline. She feels helpless enough to seek aid from a hag, but by the end of it all she’s built up a whole community to help people and she’s confident in herself and hey everything is going to be okay. She lets go of her husband. She welcomes the life she’s built.

You know what?
Shame on me.
Shame on me for telling Mayrina to give up on the man she loves.

thinking abt how coyotl is given up as an offering to queen mab so she’ll stop tormenting their village. how his full name is probably stitched onto the blanket he’s wrapped in. a token placed in his blanket, a silent hope that he might one day find his way back to his mother. the desperation that must’ve driven her to trade her child so mab’s dreams would stop tormenting her people, and how little coyotl cares.
he doesn’t even know his last name, the embroidered name too tattered by the time he can read it. how he wants nothing to do with his parents, that village, none of it.
thinking about how he does not want to see mayrina as a victim. she’s sobbing, tells him her husband was afraid of the dark, how they were sweethearts. she’s not malicious. she’s younger than he is, her brothers are dead, and she’s saddled with a child she’s not sure how to raise. coyotl hates her and her tears. how she’s not evil, just scared. it’s the worst thing he can imagine, that his mother might’ve been just as desperate, just as afraid.
thinking about how she gives him her necklace, thinking it might be worth something, how it’s only worth one coin, and he can’t help but think of his mother and the useless token tucked in a child’s blanket.

watching Max play bg3 some more and he just got past the first fight with a certain hag and can i just say. holy damn i love the way they handled Mayrina. when i say i want strong female characters i mean i want more characters like her.
possible act 1 and act 3 spoilers under the cut
like. husband? dead. income? none. baby? coming anyway. family? presumably pretty broke. she can't give a kid a good life like this. so she goes to seek out the nearest hag to bring her husband back, and promises to give the hag her child. because said hag will "give the kid a good life and teach them magic." Ethel conveniently leaves out the part where she's gonna eat this child to turn them into a new hag. but Mayrina's desperate and latches on to a known deceiver's promises despite everything telling her not to because she's so committed to having hope for better.
and is she stupid for this? maybe. she certainly yells at you a lot for killing off her abuser. but i don't think the story treats her like she's inherently stupid - just somebody in a bad situation who's lashing out. just in the way she talks about herself as a mother, it's clear Auntie Ethel has done her nasty work well. Mayrina has been suffering brutal emotional abuse the entire time she's been with Ethel. her self-esteem is destroyed. she has the right to be pissed off at anyone and everyone.
because Auntie Ethel is a monster and we can clearly see that. but when you're not the Player, gifted with genre awareness, how could you help but want to trust her? she hands out help freely if she thinks it'll lure you in. of course Mayrina could be taken in - Ethel specializes in preying on desperate young women just like her. that's like a hag's whole business model. lure them in with false promises and then keep them powerless so they'll stay around longer. anyone could fall victim. Ethel is fuckin' scary, dude. i might've stayed too.
and then later. when she's organized a support group for hag victims! like damn girl what a glow up! they're poor and underequipped to deal with Ethel's bullshit but godsdammit they know they deserve better and they're willing to fight for it! and does she still need help? yes! she's a recently bereaved pregnant widow who just escaped a human trafficking situation, of course she needs support. but i never felt like the story wanted me to laugh at her. it takes her, bad decisions and all, seriously.
even when she was crying while yelling at me i could not help but respect this lady. even when it's clear she's never gonna have the life she wanted, she's still pulling for the best one she can get. even when she's not a perfect victim she's still a survivor.
anyway i love you Mayrina, you're gonna be a great mom and i wish you and your zombie husband and your Not A Hag baby the best. you deserve it <3

Mayrina: You hear that, Connor? Ethel is dead! Oh. Mayrina: You didn't change back. You're still a... a zombie. Mayrina: I thought with Ethel gone - never mind. I'll - I'll find another way to turn you back. Somehow. Kyvir: [PERSUASION] He's never going to be human again. You have to let him go. Mayrina: I know. Damn it, I know. Mayrina: Connor - I love you. I've loved you since we were kids, and you picked me bluebells and asked me to the summer fair. Mayrina: But you're gone. And this... thing isn't you. Not anymore. Kyvir: I'm sorry you couldn't save him. Mayrina: Not everyone can be saved - I learned that lesson from Ethel. I just needed you to remind me. Mayrina: Here. Thank you for killing Ethel, but I'd like you to go now. I'll be fine - I know I'm stronger than this. I just need some time.
Now, why couldn't we just kill Ethel (again) and have nothing sad happen? Although it is a little darkly funny that she's like "Oh, I thought maybe Connor would turn back when Ethel died" like the person who owned the wand she used to resurrect Connor dying would cure him already being dead. I know she didn't really think he'd come back to life, but still.
This is sad, though. She's been hauling this zombie after her all the way to Baldur's Gate in the desperate hope that someone could bring him back properly and her "reward' is having to accept that she can't. I wanted her to have a happy ending with her husband, but... not everyone can be saved. On the bright side, at least Mayrina's tough, and she's got friends around her. She'll be alright, and it's great how she acknowledges that this thing isn't Connor and keeping it around isn't a good idea for him or her.

Ohhh 🥺 it's very sweet and satisfying that you can hear Mayrina say she's going to name her baby after you, after you finish her quest
