Never even in death will you lose your fame, but you will be in men’s thoughts, your name ever immortal... (Theognis 245-246, trans. Gerber 1999).
Sometimes, the niche crossover urge takes over. This is based on Greek red-figure vase paintings of kithara players (specifically the ones here and here). If you want to hear a little about how the kithara is played and a little sample of improvisation on the instrument, check out the video here!

When I think about Gale and Mystra, I'm reminded of the Greek myth of the moon goddess who fell in love with a shepherd and asked Zeus to place him in an enchanted sleep, so that he would never change. So he would be beautiful and hers forever.
There are different versions of the myth, but this is the one I knew as a kid - and it always made me so fucking sad. And now I see why, because Selene loves Endymion - and her love takes his life from him. A god could not love Endymion as a mortal loves a mortal; she wants his presence to gaze on, to soak in, his body to hold. Perhaps he's a balm to her immortal existence; perhaps his beauty is an inspiration to her - but she does not want him, not all of him, not really. She doesn't want his sheep flock, the evenings where his fingers burn from the cold. She doesn't want his voice, or the lines and experience he'll gather as he ages. She doesn't want to live a life alongisde his.
Selene would say she loves Endymion, and perhaps, yes, Mystra would say she loved Gale. But how can a god love a mortal in a way that a mortal can recognise as love? You soak up his company, you laugh with him, you value his mind and his talent and his deftness with words. His presence is a spot of bright difference in your endless existence. But will you change with him? Will you be vulnerable with him? Will you look him in the eye, as an equal? Will you stroke his cat and put a blanket over his shoulder when he falls asleep reading, make soup for him when he's sick? Would you love him as a person, not a treasure? You can't.
Gale wanted to be loved with a devotion to match his own. Mystra wanted him to live in the enchanted sleep of being hers, something to smile at and hold but never, never to live beside. And she knew - she must have known - how unequal their desires were. She kept him anyway, until she didn't. Until he woke up.
A god's love ruins mortals.

We made it to the end of Act 2! Is it really a d&d campaign if someone isn't having an emotional breakdown in the middle of a group hug?

what i like about ascendant astarion is that he’s completely undeniably pathetic. he’s scooby doo levels of cartoon villainy. he monologues on and on and on about ruling baldur’s gate as a diabolical overlord when every plan he has ever concocted is some variation of “step one: succeed at task, step two: profit”. if you kick him in the nuts he throws a tantrum and leaves your party. guarantee you he either he dies in a ditch in a few months time or he spends the rest of his days regularly getting thwarted perry the platypus style

BG3 spoilers ahead!
I think the thing about the durge/gortash ship that just gets me is the trope of "we both know this isn't going to end well but I still want you regardless". No matter how you play the game, these two are doomed and destined to be each other's downfall. The durge lost everything because they were too distracted by Gortash to notice Orin's scheming. If the player doesn't play as the dark urge, it costs them their life. Whereas if they are the player character, either the durge ends up killing Gortash or the durge's meddling (by killing Orin and Ketheric) leads to the brain rebelling, leading to Gortash's death.
Like these two make me think of Ketheric saying:
"the lore of one's destiny is irresistible, isn't it?"

i often think about why enver gortash and the dark urge gravitated towards each other like they did. what drew them together, after their first meeting?
was it the perpetual loneliness, the dangerous monotony of their lives, or even the deep carnal need for a person they could consider equal? was it only because of their mutual connection to the dead three, a power that tied them together only for convenience, a transitional pact made only for the end goal of batrayal? was gortash the one to initiate their first meeting, or did the dark urge slink his way into a young dukes quarters, intent on finding a new mark but instead finding opportunity?
did they quarrel, or did they have a mutual understanding, spurned on by their initial attraction to each other? was it an attraction of the body, or one of the mind — nay, the soul — that made them twist and warp themselves into shapes that only slot together?
i wonder how enver gortash felt when the clock ticked midnight and the dark urge, never prompt but never late, failed to show up. i wondered if he searched for his partner in crime, his closest confidante, before orin revealed her act. i wonder if he thought about abandoning the plan he and his bhaalspawn made together, only to pull himself together when he felt the push of the tyrants black hand on his back, forcing him to kneel.
i contemplate the nature of their relationship — their true genuine relationship, behind any facade or expectation — and if either one of them felt the loss of it in the days after the dark urges disappearance.
i like to think enver gortash mourned. i like to think that if the dark urge remembered, they would have raged. yet, there is no happy ending for these two, no matter the path the player chooses.
instead, there is only a “what could have been” and a series of questions to ponder.
