On to Battletech!! I painted a good few more mechs than this over last year, I just don’t have any pictures of them floating around.
These are my favorite big stompy idiots that I got from the Mercenaries kickstarter. In order they’re an Ostroc, Hoplite, Kraken, and Blood Asp
Ive wanted an Ostroc ever sense I did some damage with one at a grinder at Adepticon 2023, and the CGL sculpt doesn’t disappoint.
The Hoplite might be my favorite mech period. Something about being a weird oval on legs just fuckin rules!
The heaviest I love for pretty identical reasons. Big weird lookin dudes with a nearly sarcastic number of guns

If my time wasted browsing this hellsite has taught me anything, is that people that like mech/mecha stuff are MUCH hornier about big stompy robots than I initially thought

The premiere episode of Doctor Who season 15 starts with Anton Chekov himself putting a gun on the mantelpiece, turning to the camera, and saying "this is going to get fired"
...not literally, I realized halfway through writing that that this is the kind of show where that could literally happen. and should
It starts on the new Companion, Belinda, and it's her birthday. Her boyfriend bought her a star named after her on one of those star registries
AND YOU KNOW
That somehow that star is going to be legally named after her because that's the kind of show this is
Instead of being a scam
Unless it is a scam and we all thought it was important But there's a big evil dog attached
But the best part is that this exact thing happened on an episode of Phineas and Ferb
And that was not the Disney synergy I was expecting, but it probably makes the most sense

Tex Talks Battletech is a youtube series on a niche gaming channel where this guy with an impressive and soothing deep voice goes on multi hour in-universe lectures of the individual robots in his favorite robot series. He talks about the history that led to the robot's production, its performance and reputation, and its variants. He does a good job of tying it in to this sort of in-universe moral lesson.
I'm linking one to get you started.
P.S. also every year when this guy releases one of these he also sets it up as a fundraiser for good medical causes.

unless i'm misunderstanding something, the only reason the battlemech became the new face of war rather than a technological dead end is because the terran hegemony really liked the idea and forced everyone to play by their rules or get kicked out of the playground

Falling in love is oft times a little weird, and at other times a little frightening. Like treading a meandering path through woods you've been fascinated with since childhood, picking up books and following stories of other people's forays into the trees. You've pored over guide maps and walking trails, repackaged advice from tips and tricks forum topics.
Some advice was worthwhile like figuring out when to take breaks along the trail, or what traits a good hiking trail partner has. What do to when neither of you have said traits, and what that means for the journey ahead.
Yet still, some advice was outright wrong, akin to suggesting toxic plants and mushrooms were perfect trailside snacks that wouldn't leave you mangled and broken from your traumatic ordeal.
This metaphor falls apart here because this is actually about cute shit my partner does concerning robots.
Because while my younger self was captivated on these grand sweeping gestures of romance pulled from classics series like Twilight and Harry Potter and Mistborn, reality is more like deciding you're ready for that walk in the woods only you pull up to the treeline, ignoring the miniature panic attacks thrumming through you.
'Are we really going through this again?'
But genuinely? This walk has been a lovely one. Maybe I'm premature on my recollection here. Who truly knows how things will turn out?
What I do know is that, when I had a rough week, he remembered one of my comfort movies is Pacific Rim. So he put it on and let me ramble about movie facts and didn't make fun of my delight at the chnk chnk big bois sloshing in water or stompy stomping through the ruins of a monster-wracked city.
When I expressed frustration with American politics and lamented the world's future, he suggested we watch every Gundam starting with the first series (Char did nothing wrong). It's been a solid grounding to remember oh yeah, humans have always been shit at this whole governance thing, but as a result we craft stories that cope with these monumental issues.
Because nothing delights more than big stompy bois clashing against bois just as big and just as stompy.
Except, you know, the small and slight gestures that demonstrate acute care and attention to the people in your life. Such small acts, now those can be utterly world changing.

Was thinking since @natequarter put out some an incredibly correct take about the cybermen earlier today. I encourage you track down their posts I have no idea how they can put something as in-depth as they do that concisely and certainly can't replicated it, but the basic gist is that what makes the cybermen such terrifying villains is the vicarial, horrifying nature of cyber-conversion. That being said, cyberman stories don't often feature this and just make them stompy robots.
Anyway this got me thinking about my favorite cybermen expanded universe stories, so I wanted to recommend a few. All of these, in my opinion, use the inherent horror of the cybermen.
Spare Parts: Fifth Doctor and Nyssa audio published by Big Finish. I know I'm starting with the obvious one, but Spare Parts is legendary for a reason. The story does a perfect depiction of the sort of society that would create the Cybermen, while also perfectly showing the tragedy of it.
Last of the Cybermen: Sixth Doctor audio featuring Jamie and Zoe published by Big Finish. This is probably the least cyber-horror-oriented story among this list, but it is a masterclass at telling a bigger space-opera-type story that the Cybermen seem to be used for frequently (I'm thinking Revenge of the Cybermen, Earthshock, Attack of the Cybermen, Ascension of the Cybermen) without compromising the Conversion aspect of the Cybermen. The central concept is also the Sixth Doctor gets swapped with the Second before the story starts, which is interesting in and of itself.
Killing Ground: Sixth Doctor book published by Virgin Books. Killing Ground takes place on a planet that the Cybermen have conquered. But instead of converting everyone, they only take the 500 most suitable for conversion, every 3 years. And I need to shout out a specific scene. Have you ever wanted to read a full, detailed description of what the cyber-conversion process entails, as narrated by someone being cyber-converted? Because Killing Ground is where you find it. There's a lot more to Killing Ground then that, but that scene alone earned the book a spot on this list.
A Girl Called Doubt: A short story published in the BBC collection The Wintertime Paradox. I wanna tag @silvermaple6 here, as I was reading their musings on the Cybermen that were replied to Nate's post, and those musings made me think of this story instantly. It is set on a planet that the Cybermen cleaned out. Almost all of the population was converted and then shipped offworld. We follow a small group of survivors trying to make guerilla warfare against the Cybermen still on the planet. Despite being a short story, it still has space to show us the horror and futility of the survivors' actions and also pack in a twist or two.
The Flood: Eighth Doctor comic published in Doctor Who Magazine. This is, like, the Cyberman story to me. Author Scott Grey stated in commentary "The Daleks are here to kill us. The Cybermen are here to save us," and the story plays this to the most absolute horror possible. I can't say how without spoiling it, and I promise this one is best experienced blind. It's the Cybermen invading early 2000s earth and shows them to be competent and intelligent, while still also being the emotionless cyborgs we're here for. If you like the cybermen for their horror elements, go read it.
If you listen to or read any of these, lemme know! And if you have any additions to this list, I'd love them - I've not experienced every Cyber-story yet.

Knights of Venus
Hello! I've never really been a tumblr girlie, but apparently this is the done thing when making an IF. I'm making a game about squishy humans in big stompy robots on our local hell planet, give it a play here:
Current Demo (CoGDemos) Current Demo (Dash) Or read more about it here: https://forum.choiceofgames.com/t/knights-of-venus-37k-word-mech-wip-updated-05-16-24/148371?u=apple
Current ROs (that you can meet):
Sun “Sunny” Lei (孙雷): Your co-worker turned armature mechanic, Sunny is a generally cheery if acerbic presence. She hasn’t shown any interest in you before, but maybe you can make her notice you?
“David”: Your taciturn and enigmatic handler, “David” (if that even is his real name) provides mission control and serves as your connection to the mercenary world of Venus. Perhaps you could make him see you as more than just another asset?
Diana: A bold and eccentric ‘Knight’, Diana (no last name given) is a soldier of the corporate lords that rule Venus. She may have ruined your old job, but perhaps something new can spark on more even footing?
Current word count: 37k words prose, 43k with code
Asks are open, thanks for checking me out!

Blatant advertising, goooooooooo!
HEY! STOP! Whoa. Sorry, I don't mean to intrude, but I can't help but notice that you don't have enough Battletech minis.
Let's fix that! I'm Derek and I'm working in collaberation with Discount Dan to fill your house with miniatures for chump change! I will print minis for you! Rent my resin 3d printer!
Tumblr media
Want a single normal-sized mini? 4 euros plus shipping. Not a bad price, but it really starts to shine when you buy a bunch at once because I'll only charge ya 1 euro for each mini beyond the first in each lot. You can get a whole-ass company for 15 bucks! Your choice of primed or unprimed. Hell, I'll even give the lot a zenithal highlighting if you want. Base included!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Give me .stls, I give you minis. Don't have .stls? Just tell me what mechs you want and in Blake's name, I'll make it happen. Probably. Blake was kind of a dick anyway. Here's the menu of .stls I have at the ready!
Tumblr media
That's just primed minis though, and you want some paint, yeah? Nice, clean paintjob of your choosing is 14€ on the first, and only 4€ each for rest. A table-ready company printed, painted, based, and sent to your door for 58€ plus shipping. I defy you to find a cheaper price. Want 'em grungy and weathered or clean off the factory floor? Simple bases or more elaborate? I love doing weird environment bases! We can do it all! Want some of my blood in the paint? I would, but I'm pretty sure that's not getting through customs...
A note about shipping! The current tarriffs suck and I am way too small to have a shipping contract with anyone. Right now, with forty euros for a small box means that I'm shipping groups of three miniatures to your door in thick, bubble wrap envelopes (4.50€ each). Keep an eye on this spot for updates as they develop!
Tumblr media
Okay, okay... I see you're a discerning customer. The basic packages aren't enough for you. You want the stuff under the counter. You want the custom machines. No worries, I've got you covered. Our techs can handle everything from adding a simple autocannon or missile pack all the way up to mashing two mechs together into an unholy mess. Twist my arm and I'll give you a record sheet to go along with it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We'll negotiate prices in private.
Don't like stompy robots? That's cool. Into 40K kitbashes?
Tumblr media
Or maybe you wanna make a character or two in HeroForge and pass the .stls to me; guarantee I'll do the printing and painting cheaper than they will even with shipping. Scatter terrain? Just a big pile of mini bases? Decorative add-ons? Tell me what you want and I will make it happen.
Tumblr media
Jump on this quick too, because these chump prices won't last. Message me on this hellsite or discord (theDereckoning) or email at [email protected] and let's make the printer go brrrrrrr for youuuuuuu!

Got a bit of a rag tag group of reinforcements for my growing Rasalhague Dominion cluster! About half of these are mechs I actually intend to use in games (as previously mentioned the Horned Owl is a favorite design archetype of mine, the Summoner is about as idiot-proof a heavy cav omni as you can make, and the Piranha is cheap fill with a heinous close-range bite) but the Hellbringer, Huntsman, and Mist Lynx feel a bit more awkward to me. Idk they'll probably take to the table at some point

Ten people I want to get to know better…
Thanks @eurhythmix for tagging me! 🥰
Last song: Uh, Superfreak by Rick James. Don't ask.
Favourite colour: Hmmmn hard to narrow down tbh but either Grey or Forest Green. Big fan of wintery forest / coastal colours, so lots of dark stormy blues and greys and blacks in my wardrobe, and the décor is all deep greens and wood tones.
Last movie: Galaxy Quest. Watched it with my partner a few days ago, it's a real comfort watch for both of us.
Last TV show: Great British Menu. Playing catch-up on old seasons atm, but I just found out that the new season has started so maybe I'll swap… 🤔
Last book: Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries - I thought this was a super fun read and I'm really looking forward to the follow-up
Sweet/savoury/spicy: I have such a sweet tooth it's not even funny
Last thing I googled: Mr Bean Tartare
Current obsession: BattleTech 👀 Something about the combination of Big Stompy Robots and Decades of Serious Lore is really hitting me right now
Looking forward to: Work has been absolute hell lately, and we have a huge database migration happening and Yours Truly has to work next Saturday to run point on the whole thing. And I'm going to be on hand to provide support to our clients in the week following, in the event that it goes tits up, which I'm absolutely expecting it to. SO I'm looking forward to the end of this whole process. I'm so tired this has been ongoing since November 😭
Tagging: @cr0ftisprocrastinating @ficmuse @onebedtorulethemall @secretsofcirce @spiteandchocolate @mandg-readings @iggygiraffe @scarlet-it-was @augustaoctavia87 and anyone else who wants to play (I’m sorry if you’ve already been tagged!)
