The Pace Report: "The Rebirth of a Modern Jazz Pianist" The Billy Childs Interview

Welcome to a very special edition of The Pace Report featuring Three-Time-Grammy Award winning pianist and arranger Billy Childs. He was in NYC recently performing new music from his latest Mack Avenue Release "Rebirth," his first straight-ahead piano jazz project in over a decade. His weeklong sold-out sets featured Steve Wilson on saxophones, Ari Hoenig on drums, and Hans Glaweischnig on bass.

Billy has been one of the most in-demand arrangers on the popular and jazz scene working with likes of Dianne Reeves, Sting, Chris Botti, Gladys Knight, Yo-Yo Ma, and David Foster. In 2000 he formed his critically-acclaimed Jazz Chamber Ensemble. In 2015 Billy won a Grammy for Best Arrangement Instruments and Vocals, "New York Tendaberry," from his successful Laura Nyro tribute album, "Map To The Treasure Reimagining Laura Nyro."

I down with Bill during his weeklong stint at the Jazz Standard to talk about his return to straight-ahead jazz, his musical influences, and how composing helped him develop into a better pianist.

<Today’s CD> 작년 발표한 앨범 “Rebirth”가 올해 그래미 상을 획득함으로써 생애 통산 네번째 그래미 어워드 수상자가 된 재즈 피아니스트이자 편곡자인 빌리 차일즈. 그의 재능은 남달라서 10대부터 전문 연주자로 활동했고 프레디 허버드 그룹에 참여하고, J.J. 존슨과 함께 연주하는 등, 화려한 경력을 뽐낸다. 그러나 그토록 다양한 경력에도 불구하고 대중적으로 큰 명성을 얻지 못했다. 물론, 업계나 프로 연주자들 사이에서는 크게 인정되었기는 하지만 말이다. 88년에 첫 솔로 레코딩을 발표하고 비평가들에게 좋은 평을 듣지만, 세상에 알려지기 시작한 것은 �� 코리아의 권유로 Stretch 레코드로 이적하고 오늘 소개하는 “I’ve known rivers” 라는 앨범을 내고 나서부터이다. 이 앨범에는 유명 여성보컬인 다이앤 리브스가 게스트로 참여했는데, 후에 그녀의 프로젝트 앨범에 편곡자로 참여해서 그래미를 수상했다. 그의 편곡 실력은 정평이 났는지, 요요마, 크리스 보띠, 스팅, 미셸 부블레, 데이빗 포스터 등 다양한 장르의 뮤지션 작품에 편곡, 지휘 등으로 참가해서 그 장면의 실력자로 인정 받았는데, 꾸준히 자신의 리드작을 발표하면서 재즈 피아니스트로서의 ���업도 소홀히 하디 않았다. 작년의 신보와 20년전의 작품을 비교하면, 수많은 진보와 변화가 있겠지만, 영향을 많이 받은 허비 행콕이나 칙 코리아의 프레이즈적 성향이 꾸준히 느껴지는 반면, 자신만이 추구하는 진보적 연주 기법이나 전체적인 구조적 어랜지에서 독특한 특징이 있다. 늘 새로운 가운데 자신이 고집하는 음악적 방향성을 어디선가 강하게 뿜어내는 것이 빌 차일즈만이 갖고 있는 강점이라 생각된다. 내가 20여년전에 이 앨범을 살때, 그가 이런 거물이 되리라고는 생각치 못했는데, 올해 그래미를 네번째 수상했다는 소식을 들으니 감회가 새롭기만 하다. #music#jazz#piano#arranger#Grammys#BillyChilds#stretchrecords#일본반#1994년녹음#1995(Edogawa-ku, Tokyo, Japan에서)

«New York Tendaberry» é uma canção de 1969, mas, de certa forma, também é de 2014, uma vez que esta versão lhe abre perspectivas que não existiam no original de Laura Nyro. Ao contrário do fizeram, também este ano, os The Bad Plus com A sagração da Primavera, uma versão que reduz a peça de Stravinsky às bases que fazem funcionar a peça original, Billy Childs decidiu, não só seguir algumas sugestões presentes na versão de Nyro, como ir além desta em algumas partes. E se o papel de Rennée Fleming se resume a ancorar uma versão à outra, a contribuição de Yo-Yo Ma dá a esta aquilo que a torna muito mais do que uma curiosidade.
