The construction industry is looking for a silver bullet to enable it to carry on as normal, swapping in one material for another. Hans Joachim Schellnhuber has argued that if construction over the next couple of centuries substituted business‑as‑usual materials such as steel and concrete for engineered timber, the atmosphere could return to pre‑industrial conditions. Engineered timber is now being heralded as the answer to all our industry’s problems, without much careful interrogation or contextualisation. While a shift to bio‑based materials is necessary, it is just as crucial to ask how these materials will be cultivated: where, on whose land, using what resources, and at what cost? The use of plants in buildings is necessarily intertwined with questions of sustainable cultivation, climate resilience, industrial agriculture, and the deployment of petrochemical‑fuelled fertiliser and pesticide inputs. The world’s ecosystems have shown us time and again that what landscapes need is diversity, and hectares and hectares of monocultural agriculture  or woodland is neither resilient nor sustainable.

Dreamy Floating Spiral Architecture Inspired by the Golden Ratio
Inspired by the timeless allure of the golden ratio, architectural designer Manas Bhatia has used AI to produce a series of floating skyscrapers. With these buildings, which he calls Nautilus Bioarchitecture, Bhatia muses whether the timeless classicism of the golden ratio can shape the architecture of the future. Based on what we’ve seen, we think that the answer is yes.

a man mansion scenario for man mansion monday
A lone Man Mansion crashes through the trees, the Departed's laughter trailing along behind him. Frantically, he searches every glowing spot he comes across. "Shit!" No luck, he's coming up empty handed at every turn, and the Departed is hot on his trail.
"DeeeeaAAR HouSe HusbaaaaaanD~" She's here! The Departed stalks out of the shadows, closing in on the singled out and defenseless Man Mansion. In his desperate search, the Man Mansion has found a dead end, the undergrowth too thick to escape through.
The terrifyingly huge titula eases her way towards her cornered prey, seemingly relishing in the growing fear, stretching out the Man Mansion's final moments for her own amusement.
"CaaaAaAaAaAn I biiiiiiTE yoooouuuuuu~"
BLAT BLAT BLAT
What's this?! At the very last moment, a Guardian has appeared from beneath the Man Mansion, launching a vicious attack with a roar that forces the Departed back, tripping over her many legs in her haste to escape. An astonishing turnaround!
His impending doom thwarted, the Man Mansion takes a moment to rest, trembling from the close call. The Guardian climbs up the Man Mansion's bioarchitecture, settling in one of the upper windows, perched in a way that reminds the author of having a little pet in the chest pocket of a coat. He pulls out a cigarette for a victory smoke.
The Man Mansion recovers from his ordeal, shakes himself, and heads off. We hope he finds his Haunting and doesn't get separated again. With a Guardian by his side, we have high hopes for his survival.

See on Scoop.it - Variétés entomologiques

The Fungal Conspiracy - Building cities beyond imagination
This hypothesis challenges conventional views on urban development, proposing that sentient fungi play a significant role in the construction of cities and towns. Hidden beneath the visible structures, a covert alliance is said to exist between humanity and these enigmatic fungal architects.
At the core of this conspiracy are subterranean mycelial engineers, navigating the soil's depths with purpose. Allegedly, these fungal architects, through intricate mycelial networks, form the hidden foundation of urban landscapes, collaborating with human architects to shape the very essence of our cities.
Mycelium, typically seen as a natural occurrence, takes on a new role in the Fungal Conspiracy — a deliberate building material. Fungi supposedly contribute to crafting and reinforcing structures, creating an organic construction process that blends human ingenuity with the adaptability and strength of fungal networks.
Advocates of the conspiracy propose that this bioarchitecture leads to adaptive cities and towns. Fungi, responsive to environmental changes, may facilitate structures that evolve based on the needs of inhabitants and the surrounding ecosystem, resulting in an ever-changing cityscape that seamlessly integrates with the natural world.
Central to the conspiracy is the idea of mycological urban planning — a sophisticated collaboration between human architects and fungal intelligence. Proponents suggest that architects and fungi communicate to design city layouts optimizing energy efficiency, waste management, and overall environmental sustainability. In the more expansive versions of the conspiracy, mushroom councils or fungal governance bodies are believed to guide the development of fungal cities, adding an air of mystery to the narrative.
Despite the secrecy, supporters emphasize a harmonious relationship between fungi and humanity. Fungi, in this narrative, are co-creators rather than invaders, contributing to flourishing ecosystems in urban areas and fostering a unique balance between the built environment and the natural world. The Fungal Conspiracy, rooted in speculation, offers a captivating exploration of potential intersections between nature and urban development, envisioning cities and towns shaped by the symbiotic collaboration of human ingenuity and fungal intelligence.
