I just thought everyone would like this. The “default” human in my biochem class was a female body. It’s something so small but this Kinda thing matters. It’s so common that a male body is shown as the default when studying biology and anatomy, so it’s refreshing to recognize the inherent bias.

Hi so I'm gonna be applying to uni next year and I was pretty sure i wanted to apply for chemistry but now im not sure if i want to do that or apply for biochemistry, i really love both biology and chemistry and im finding it so hard to try and pick between the two so i was wondering if you could give me any advice ♥ thanks in advance :)
Hi there!
Before I switched to chemistry I used to study biotech (where I had to take a biochem course), so naturally my experience is very limited, but I'll try my best :)
I think if you genuinely enjoy both chemistry and biology then biochem might be the better choice here. That's not to say you'd necessarily be unhappy studying "pure" chem, but you may like biochem a lot more. If you like biology but see yourself leaning more towards chemistry, then I encourage you to consider something like biological chemistry or medicinal chemistry :)
An important thing to keep in mind is this: how do you feel about studying something interdisciplinary? Biochemistry is a fascinating mixture of chemistry, cell biology, microbiology (and possibly more, but I'm not that knowledgeable), so if you have a lot of interest in many different aspects of the natural sciences - that might be it. But on the other hand, you won't always be able to dive in really deep like you probably would in chemistry, as you'll have to combine chunks of knowledge and skills from all these different areas of science. That's neither good nor bad. It all comes down to a matter of personal preference. For me, that was a downside of biotech - that it was too broad. For many people, that is its greatest strength. How do you feel about it?
Also, check out the syllabi!! If you visit the websites of the universities you're interested in, the syllabi should be freely available. Look through them. What will you have to study as a chemistry student vs a biochemistry student? What courses will you have to take? What will the courses be about? What practicals will be there?
You can also look up things like "study chemistry" or "study biochemistry" on yt. Some of the bigger unis upload short videos where students talk about their majors and show what they do in a day. It doesn't have to be a video from your preferred uni - it's just supposed to give you a general sense of what you'd study if you picked a certain major. It's what I did. It reassured me chemistry was the right choice for me :)
Good luck!

learning about cellpuku programmed cell death and apparently mitochondria is not only the powerhouse of the cell, it’s the self destruct button?
there is a protein involved called the Bcl-2-associated death promoter, which is written shorthand as. Bad. Mitochondria releases the Bad. thank you to whoever named this protein

lipids: a review
Tumblr media
saturated lipids. straight. rigid. obviously problematic. they have their place, of course, like drywall. basic bitches, the salt of the earth, a necessary evil
Tumblr media
polyunsaturated lipids. a marked improvement. cis double bonds, and therefore kinky. extremely kinky. provide fluidity to their local microenvironments, essential for transition into the more fun hexagonal and cubic membrane phases
Tumblr media
sphingolipids (and plasmologen honorable mention). now we’re talking. a trans double bond, which I think we can all agree is fun. tight packing, aggregation into self-ordered domains when the saturated and cis lipids all around them get to be too much, extensive hydrogen bonding to provide close T4T ride-or-die intermolecular interactions
Tumblr media
Sphingadienine. a trans double bond AND a cis double bond. the chosen one. an enigma, an iconoclast. 20% of plasma sphingolipids, no fucking idea what it does, enzyme that makes it discovered in 2020, kinky and trans and unknowable
anyway they just gave me a phd in this shit so you can trust me I’m a doctor

Fuck capitalism I just want to make fantasy plants. Lemme make my purple coconuts with unusually dense pockets of sulphur which look like seeds. They aren’t seeds tho, the plant is a giant ass fern and uses spores. Which disperse from the shell. They would make stuff out of it but the spores keep sprouting in the storerooms. God said here have some sulphur, but also you cant use it or you get infested with the cocoanut ferns.

oh i almost forgot
my first pharmacognosy and phytochemistry lab class was today and teacher said we have to do and herbal with any theme we chose and we (my team) we’re thinking about doing it of poisonous plants with pokémon design!
not sure we’re actually going to do it because it sounds like a lot of work and my whole team have a single serotonin molecule to share so…
but i’ll be so cool!
