🤍: Which character is not as morally bad as everyone else seems to think?

Hands down jin guangyao from mdzs

Firstly I'm not talking about The Untamed b/c I don't really like or vibe with the show's narrative and find it an utterly poor adaption of the book series. Secondly no I'm not saying JGY is 100% good or whatever, rather that fandom imo makes him irredeemably mustache twirling evil~~~ which misses the god damn point of the series

like @thatswhatsushesaid and others can speak more specifically on the hows, and whys of JGY not being a Children's Cartoon Villain for me it really comes down a few factors of: fandom being we piss on the poor when it comes to discussions and thematics about classism, discussions around non-anglo cultures, the untamed canon mixing with the novel canon to much (they're separate and should stay separate), and in general viewing media in a strict binary of good vs evil

So yeah, JGY isn't a "good" person but jesus fuck on a cracker there's very few chars in MDZS that are "good" people and the novel becomes so much less interesting when you apply those binaries to it. If I wanted kids cartoon morality I'd watch Avatar but fans can't be normal about that either!

Aang gets so much shit from people it's actually wild. The amount of "Aang isn't as good as ppl think" takes is baffling. "He should have killed Ozai" baby wake up and smell the Nickelodeon they were never gonna have their protagonist of their show meant for 8 yr olds murder a man in cold blood in the 7pm timeslot what do you think are you watching? Korra was aimed at an older audience (clearly teens) and she didn't even kill bitches, Amon blew himself up. Why do villains always die off screen or ambiguously in kids shows? Because it's to keep parents off the networks back about violence.

Hell you see this happening in blockbusters, lots of MCU villains die not at the hands of the heroes but via other circumstances, like Red Skull getting sucked into cube space in Captain America, or Erik killing himself in Black Panther, etc it's cause it looks "bad" to have your hero you have to sell toys to parents murdering characters on screen.

Also since I talked about 616!Steve and MCU!Tony in the other ask, I'ma throw in 616!Scott Summers lol Scott got so much hate (and still does!) from fans but he's a vastly interesting character when written well. With comics, the way they're written, and the way they're produced it's just a fact you're gonna get extremely inconsistent characterization overall but the throughline of Scott's char is very strong imo in the comics he's not just a "stick in the mud" or outright morally evil~~ I feel like as knowledge and education about systemic oppression has become more talked about folks have noticed that Scott makes points. And while not always right or justified, his label as a mutant terrorist begins to be viewed more as a freedom fighter (which lots of fans always saw or have seen combine with ppl being more critical of Charles and his misshapen MLK basis as ppl learn more about MLK and Malcolm X's actual politics).
