Socrates Zaferiou House, Blauvelt, Clausland Mountain Park, New York,
The four-bedroom Usonian  property is one of just nine that Frank Lloyd Wright designed for Marshall Erdman in the 1950s as part of his Clausland Mountain Park development in Blauvelt.
This one is special, however, as it has a specially modified floor plan. While still single-storey, it features an extra bedroom and (more significantly) a walk-out basement with high ceilings, added at Zaferiou’s request.
Mr Zaferiou appealed to Wright for two years to approve his site and expanded home style, and finally, this variation of the Usonian style design was eventually approved by Wright.
Living spaces span 2,600 sq ft and are arranged in an L-plan, with Wright’s customary built-ins, wooden panelling and signature red flooring all original. While Wright visited the construction site, he sadly passed away before its completion in early 1960.

#FBF News from Yesteryear
July 31, 1924 – 100 YEARS AGO
Excerpt from the Pearl River News
DOVE IN HOLE AND RESCUED YOUNG GIRL - MARTY ACKER OF PEARL RIVER QUALIFIES FOR CARNEGIE MEDAL AT BLAUVELT
[Image: Forty-Foot Hole, Blauvelt, ca. 1940. The Forty-foot Hole on Fifth Avenue in Blauvelt was a well-known swimming spot before it was bulldozed into a reservoir by the Spring Valley Water Company. The waters of the Hackensack River flowed under the railroad and under a bridge and into this idyllic scene. Image courtesy of the Nyack Library, via NYHeritage.org.]
Marty Acker, employed in the Pearl River postoffice, qualified for a Carnegie medal Sunday afternoon when he dove from the bank of the forty-foot swimming hole in the Hackensack Creek at Blauvelt and saved a girl from drowning.
The girl had become exhausted while swimming in the center of the hole and cried for help as she suddenly sank. Acker reached her as she was going down for the second time and she gripped both arms about his neck.
Acker, however, shook her off and after a struggle with the assistance of Louis Hulbert got her safely to shore, where she was revived after she had fainted.
The girl’s parents, who thanked Acker for rescuing their daughter, did not give their names.

#FBF News From Yesteryear; – 150 YEARS AGO
January 3, 1874
Excerpt from the Rockland County Journal
SINGULAR TREASURE TROVE
[Image: Blauveltville. Detail from Claire Tholl’s map “Landmarks of Rockland County with Old Roads and Early Buildings.” The buildings represented by solid squares were still standing in 1975. Image appeared in South of the Mountains, vol. 50, no. 2, 2006.]
At the Huyler auction sale at Blauveltville, a few days since, an old bureau was knocked down to Mr. Bell of Lake avenue, near Rockland Lake. On trekking it home and examining more closely his purchase he discovered two secret drawers, in one of which he found thirty dollars and in the other over one hundred dollars in gold. Not wishing to retain the money he returned it, but the parties selling insisted on his keeping the thirty dollars found in one drawer. Notwithstanding this lucky purchase, we could not advise our readers to pay very high prices for old bureaus.
