In an age that witnessed considerable support for social improvement, public schools often took center stage. By the 1830s, a chorus of reform-minded people began to sing the praises of free, tax-supported schools: Thaddeus Stevens, later a prominent Republican activist in Pennsylvania; Catharine Beecher, advocate of more educational opportunities for women; Caleb Mills, an evangelical minister who later became Indiana's leading common school advocate; and even notable Southerners, who faced the greatest opposition and whose efforts bore the least fruit. Enthusiasm for social improvement through education flourished. Since the turn of the century, countless pamphlets, speeches, reports, petitions, testimonials, newspaper editorials, books, and articles had promoted the importance of education in a republic. A few dozen educational periodicals also popularized the cause of learning by promoting a class-inclusive school system, especially for white children.
In Philadelphia, New York, and other cities, the editors of workingmen's newspaper - the voice of the skilled artisan minority - despaired over the fate of youth as apprenticeships declined and unskilled factory labor increased; they endorsed instituting a common system and eliminating the stigma attached to free schools. "I think that no such thing as charities should be instituted for the instruction of youth," wrote one articulate worker in the Mechanics' Free Press in Philadelphia in 1828. He favored free schools dependent not on "private charities" but "founded and supported by the government itself." One Ohioan added, "Unless the Common Schools can be made to educate the whole people, the poor as well as the rich, they are not worthy of the support of the patriot or the philanthropist." "Give to education... a clear field and fair play," said a recent immigrant in A Treatise on American Popular Education in 1839, "and your poor houses, lazarettos, and hospitals will stand empty, your prisons and penitentiaries will lack inmates, and the whole country will be filled with wise, industrious, and happy inhabitants. Immorality, vice and crime, disease, misery and poverty, will vanish from our regions, and morality, virtue and fidelity, with health, prosperity, and abundance, will make their permanent home among us.”
Born in an age when millennial ideals, such as universal peace and prosperity following Christ's imminent return to earth, influenced wide sectors of the population, the common schools became a useful barometer of the extensive social changes that transformed the nation before the Civil War. Cities, factories, and foreign immigration generated moral panic and social fears among many northern reformers, whose search for solutions to public ills centered on a more expansive public school system. Reflecting the contradictory passions of the reformers, schools not only favored greater access to literacy and academic study but simultaneously downplayed intellectual achievement by elevating the moral aims of instruction. America's ambivalent attitude toward the life of the mind and scholarship thus found expression in the nation's emerging school system, where character development and moral uplift took precedence even as lifeless instruction in academic subjects predominated. Setting a pattern that long endured, reform-minded citizens increasingly assumed that individual welfare and social progress depended on an extensive network of public schools.

A Mistake, An Apology, And A Lesson On Feedback
Originally posted on TheEdublogger. Earlier today I sent an email out to the nearly one million educators on our Edublogs list. The subject line had an oh so embarrassing mistake. Here it is: Your invited! Free course on blogging with students Of course you caught it immediately. I did too, as soon as it landed in my inbox. Unfortunately for me, by that time, there was no way to ‘unsend’.…

Post #1: Bringing Blogging into the Classroom
When thinking of a blog, many people's minds go straight to travel blogs or foodie blogs, but in the digital world today a blog can be a powerful tool for education that can impact and transform the learning experiences of students and teachers. The technology space of a blog has gained world-wide popularity by making it easier to search and collect documents, share thoughts in an open public space, and contribute to communities (Blogging for Informal Learning, 2011). Blogging has helped to provide a unique opportunity for students to not only reflect on their learning, but also develop essential skills such as communication, and learn about a new resource that will allow them to dive deeper in a content area. But how exactly can blogging be incorporated into the learning environment to help students expand their knowledge and skills?
One of the many benefits of blogging within education is that it encourages student engagement. Throughout their educational journey, students have learned how to absorb information through demonstration, textbook, and notetaking. Students can use blogs to reflect on content lessons, share insights and experiences on a given topic, and document their findings. Within my culinary classroom using blogs could look like, having students create a blog post on a recipe, the culinary techniques used within it, the development of the recipe, and things that would change or add to the recipe in order to enhance it or make it unique to them. Making the documentations about a recipe will not only help to reinforce their understanding of the culinary techniques, but also will help them to develop other skills like critical thinking.
The second benefit of blogging that I will be talking about is how it promotes collaboration within an educational setting. “In blog-supported environments, learners
learn to and begin to appreciate information sharing, idea exchange, and collaboration, which in turn contributes to student learning or professional development” (Learning through Blogging, 2017). When students create and use blogs within learning, they can comment on each other's posts and engage in discussions with one another. Through this discussion they can offer feedback, insight, experience, and ideas from a different perspective. It's important for students to learn how to communicate and collaborate properly, as they will use those skills in their future professional environments.
Incorporating blogging into the learning environments is an easy, yet effective way to enhance the learning experience for students, through engagement, collaboration, and communication. So give it a try in your classrooms, and you might just be surprised at the creativity and insight it brings to your students and your classroom!

Blogging as a Tool for Expanding Learning and Engagement
Incorporating blogging into the learning environment enhances student engagement, reflection, and critical thinking. Blogs provide a platform for learners to articulate their thoughts, analyze course material, and engage in meaningful discussions beyond the classroom. Through blogging, students develop digital literacy skills, improve writing proficiency, and cultivate a habit of continuous learning (Richardson, 2017).
One significant advantage of blogging is its ability to foster collaboration and peer interaction. When students read and comment on each other’s posts, they gain exposure to diverse perspectives and engage in constructive dialogue. This interaction strengthens their ability to communicate ideas effectively and critically evaluate information. Additionally, blogging encourages students to connect course concepts with real-world applications, deepening their understanding of the subject matter. Research has shown that students perceive blogging as an effective tool for knowledge-sharing, which allows them to process and retain information while actively participating in their learning communities (Abdul Kadir & Tasir, 2020).
From an instructional design perspective, blogging aligns with modern design trends that emphasize learner engagement, digital collaboration, and personalized learning experiences (Mery, 2022). Integrating multimedia elements such as images, videos, and hyperlinks further enriches the learning experience and makes content more engaging and interactive.
To maximize the effectiveness of blogging in education, instructors should provide clear guidelines, encourage thoughtful discussions, and integrate reflective prompts. By doing so, educators create a dynamic learning environment where students actively contribute to knowledge construction.

How to Teach with Technology
SOCIAL SOFTWARE
social software is a type of software or web service that allows people to communicate and collaborate while using the application. E-mail, blogs, instant messaging, and wikis are all examples of social software. Most teachers in today‟s schools were not surrounded by technology growing up. The speed of these technologies has been developed, meaning that it is a daunting task for many to catch up with their students. The difference in the ease of use of technology between students and teachers is quite apparent now.
Blogs in Language Teaching
Blogging is writing your thoughts into your blog, and the "blogosphere," a term coined by William Quick (2001), is the "intellectual cyberspace" that bloggers (i.e., those who blog) occupy. There are different types of blogs based on the purpose of their creation. The class blog is an example of blogs made by one class. An edublog is a blog that is used in education. A tutor blog is a blog set up and maintained by a teacher. A student blog is a blog set up and maintained by a student/learner. A blog can contain video or audio, which does not make it different than any other blog
Wikis in Language Teaching
A wiki is more dynamic because it can have more than one author. Unlike a blog, a wiki is not linear. Pages can be linked back and forth as we like. The most popular example of a wiki is the Wikipedia. Based on its nature, a wiki is more appropriate for collaborative writing.
Podcasts in Language Teaching
Podcast is a Web-based audio broadcast via an RSS feed, accessed by subscription over the Internet. The podcast is like a radio or TV show, but we can watch or listen on a topic that interests us. It can also be downloaded to our computer or iPod. podcasts can be used to improve the learners‟ listening skills . It is when the podcast was made by lecturers in order for students who missed the class can download the course, and catch up their study.

El blog como herramienta constructivista
Tumblr media

Top 8 things parents expect from a school
Tumblr media
Firstly all parents want their children to be in a healthy environment. It is very necessary for the schools to create such an environment that will deliver great positivity and happiness. Nobody wants to be in a dull environment. Owing to the possibility of the fact that if the school is nice then children would want to go. Not only it will make the child happy but they will also develop a liking towards the learning process! St. Stephen’s Birati in Nimta, Kolkata is doing the same thing that parents will really appreciate and will look forward to the admission.
The next thing on their list is a good teaching process. Teachers should be helpful and understanding. They should know what they are teaching and should be well equipped to clear all the queries raised by the students.
The extracurricular activities are next on their list. They help to bring out team spirit and talents that even the students are not aware of.
Libraries should be the most resourceful place in the school. It should be properly stuffed with technology and should get transformed into a digital library.
Involving parents in the school activities and overall development of the students a holy grail when it comes to fulfilling the wish of parents. The school should let the parents pitch their ideas. In St. Stephen’s School, Biratithe management places great importance to the views of the parents and there are a lot of curriculums in which the parents are actively involved. In this way, the communication gap between the- parent and the school decreases.
It has become evidently important that the school should have a nice sports layout. Both in favor of indoor sports and outdoor sports so that mentally and physically their children become healthy.
The parents are also looking for the fact that the schools in which their kid studies should be well reputed! They would surely want to know that their children are in safe hands.
