Hey why/how are some bugs metallic? The ghost mantid feet, and I think there was a green ant eating spider a week or so ago that also looked like it was made of gold. How they do that. It’s so cool

I don't think the ghost mantis feet were metallic, they're often just white.

But in general, metallic colors in bugs are structural rather than any sort of metallic pigment. They just happen to reflect light in a way that makes them look metallic.

I can’t say I enjoy this, my child. Something about it disturbs me so. I believe the intentions may be pure, but I find it to be in bad taste. All the more so with the image of the girl kneeling in prayer to it. I fear this may degrade the significance of the crucifixion more than celebrate it’s importance

Hello! I am hoping you can maybe have some cool facts to help me be less scared of house centipedes. There was one on my wall earlier and I didn’t know what it was but it scared me and I worry about my cat with unknown bugs (had to get a stinkbug away from her last spring, and a scorpion a couple years ago TWICE, so the self preservation is NOT there…) so I asked my housemate to move it, but unfortunately it got smushed in the process (so FAST!!). After a bit of googling a few hours later I figured out what it was (brain shut off and I ended up just searching “caterpillar with too many legs” 😭) , and that they’re okay to ignore and won’t hurt my cat. I don’t want to risk hurting the next one I might see by having my housemate move them, but this one definitely scared the bejeezus out of me so I’m hoping for some cool facts, cute photos, or anything else that might help me be less scared next time so that we can coexist.

They are leggy and fast but definitely okay to just let chill in your house!

You mention a couple times that radfem ideology didn’t have to be transphobic, but I’ve never seen it anywhere but, well, TERFs. Would you mind talking about some of the more inclusive tenets and/or pointing me in the direction of a source or two where I could see that? It’d take a lot to make me trust someone who was still using the term “radfem” to describe themselves (as opposed to describing a specific belief statement) in this day and age, but I’d like to at least know some of the non-hateful context if it exists.

The thing about radical feminism is that in its original form it was inherently trans-inclusive, and the original proponents of the movement were trans allies. Early radfem thinkers violently opposed bioessentialism, which you may have noticed is a core tenet of modern radical feminism because it’s been warped over time into a form that is unrecognizable and difficult to trace back to its roots and quite honestly doesn’t reflect the name. FITs love to point out that radfems are the ones that gave us things like legal abortion and women’s rights to their own money but they always omit the part where the most prominent radfem leaders would have been called “TRAs” today.

In the ‘80s and ‘90s, radical feminism took a dive because forward-thinking progressives like Judith Butler took the things they learned as radfems and built Queer Feminism (and Queer Theory) off of it in the ‘90s and ‘00s.

I can’t seem to make up my mind on whether or not radical feminism can be reclaimed to be trans-inclusive again at this point, but I do love reading other people’s thoughts and opinions on it.

@bluejaysfeathers, I just wanted to point something out to you about the argument you put above, in addition to what @fandomsandfeminism already said about the way no system will ever be perfect.

I've seen many people argue like you have, using that logic to say that we shouldn't change the systems we live with. "We can't change the system!" people say, because the proposed alternative would not be perfect.

I want to ask you to stop and consider what that kind of argument actually means, using the discussion above.

It's not saying that prisons are good and we should keep them.

It's not saying that prisons work and we should keep them.

It's not even saying that the proposed alternatives are bad and we shouldn't adopt them.

It's saying, quietly, "I'm scared of changing things so I don't want to change them."

Out of that, people will invent endless excuses not to make a needed and necessary change.

That's why so many people don't want to learn about the alternatives, it's easier to live with what you already know. That's why so many people oppose even common sense changes they agree with, because it's easier to live with what you already know. That's why so many people fight to keep any change at all from happening, because it is so much easier to live with what you already know.

Here's what I'm saying. It's important for us all to reflect on a simple question:

Am I against making this change because it's bad? Or am I against it because I'm afraid of change itself?
