Black Friday Haul
Black Friday this year, despite a decent amount of online browsing, was all about Corvus Belli for me and, I’m excited to share what I picked up! I’ve been a fan of Corvus Belli for a long time, and their games absolutely never fail to deliver—whether it’s quality, design, artwork, or lore.
Tumblr media
Warcrow & Infinity
If you don’t know, Warcrow is Corvus Belli’s new fantasy skirmish game that launched this year, alongside Warcrow Adventures (which I also got in the mail the other day!). I picked up the free digital rulebook to learn how to play, but this book here has all the storyline, and I can’t wait to dive into it.
The starter box has some great fluff about the Hegemony of Embersig and The Northern Tribes. And while orcs are typically my thing… I’ve gotta say, I’m really loving what I’m reading so far about the Hegemony! The artwork is fantastical, the setting is a perfect mix of high fantasy, whimsy, and darkness, and the system uses d8s with the same symbols they introduced in Aristeia!—so far, I've found it to be pretty easy to pick up and share with others.
Infinity N5 also dropped this year, and with the improved rules clarity and storyline updates, I’m WAY too excited to read this book! I’ve heard rumors about the Combined Army aligning with the Human Sphere and O-12, which is just flippin’ crazy. I haven’t heard much yet about my favorite faction (Haqqislam), but I can’t wait to learn.
As always, the artwork is stunning, and the page layout makes it an absolute pleasure to reference and read.
Rem Racers
I picked up Rem Racers for one simple reason: I’m a shameless collector of all things Infinity-related. (Yeah, I’m a simp—what of it? lol.) It looks neat, though, and I’m planning to bring it with me on vacation to teach my nieces.
Tumblr media
Aristeia! Expansion & Mat
I’ve been slowly trying to collect all the Aristeia! characters, and here are two more to toss into the pile. Will I ever get around to painting them? Who knows. But I love being able to demo the game for people and give them a plethora of choices for their aristos.
The Saif Traders Coliseum game mat? Yeah, it’s kind of a cheap bonus pick-up for myself. Totally not needed—especially since I have some nice 3D terrain already—but I couldn’t resist.
Tumblr media
The Pulpi Coin!
Finally, check this little guy out—Corvus Belli tossed this little shit in as a bonus: a Pulpi Coin! Pulpi, their adorable octopus mascot for the Interplanetario tournament in Spain, now lives forever on this sweet little brass (or whatever) coin.
Definitely stoked for this haul and can’t wait to fall asleep reading these new books over the next few weeks!

The Enduring Magic of Board Games: From Ancient Pastimes to Modern Play
Tumblr media
In a world dominated by screens and digital entertainment, board games remain a powerful, enduring form of human connection. Whether it's a quick game of Uno with family or a night-long battle of wits in Catan, board games transcend generations, cultures, and trends.
A Journey Through Time
Board games are as old as civilization itself. Archaeologists have unearthed game boards from ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt, including the Royal Game of Ur and Senet, which date back over 4,000 years. These early games served not only as entertainment but also as spiritual or symbolic activities, reflecting the values and beliefs of their cultures.
Fast forward to the 20th century, and board games had entered households worldwide. Titles like Monopoly (1935), Scrabble (1938), and Risk (1957) became staples, introducing generations to strategy, language, and negotiation.
The Modern Board Game Renaissance
In the 21st century, board games have seen a dramatic resurgence. The rise of Eurogames — strategy-driven titles like Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, and Ticket to Ride — changed the way people thought about board gaming. These games emphasized player choice, economic management, and long-term planning, moving beyond simple roll-and-move mechanics.
At the same time, Kickstarter and other crowdfunding platforms opened the door for indie designers to bring fresh, creative concepts to the table. Cooperative games (Pandemic), legacy games (Gloomhaven), and thematic storytelling games (Betrayal at House on the Hill, Arkham Horror) now dominate gaming nights worldwide.
Why We Play
Board games offer something increasingly rare in modern life: face-to-face interaction. They bring people together around a shared experience, encourage communication, and often spark laughter, rivalry, and storytelling.
They also offer a mental workout. Many games demand strategic thinking, planning, and adaptation. Some teach history (Twilight Struggle), others economics (Power Grid), and some even logic and deduction (Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective).
Board Games in Culture
Board games are no longer confined to dusty shelves or rainy afternoons. They’ve grown into a full-blown cultural phenomenon. Cafes dedicated entirely to tabletop games have popped up across the globe. Conventions like Gen Con and Essen Spiel attract hundreds of thousands of enthusiasts. And streaming platforms like YouTube and Twitch feature gameplay sessions, reviews, and tutorials watched by millions.
Final Thoughts
From ancient tombs to modern kitchen tables, board games continue to evolve while holding onto their core appeal: human connection, creativity, and fun. As the hobby grows and diversifies, there's truly a game for everyone — whether you're a hardcore strategist, a casual party player, or someone just looking to laugh with friends.
So next time you’re looking for a break from the screen, grab a game, gather your people, and roll the dice. You might just find magic in cardboard.

I expected a snack and got the whole meal. Recently released by Next Move Games, Azul: Duel is a competitive two player adaption of the acclaimed Azul series. Designer Michael Kiesling retains the essence of the original while introducing refined mechanics, deep tactical decisions, and engaging gameplay. Azul: Duel is a must-try for both longtime fans and newcomers alike.

[Image descriptions: a huge box of boardgame Ceres accompanied by an alien, dice in the ruin stall of Dakota Irish, game pieces of Voidfall, Dune: House Secrets and Quest, a wooden d&d table by Rathskeller, a banner of Dungeons & Lasers, an assortment of coins, and an overview of the stand of boardgame Eclipse]
Last week I went to the world’s largest public fair for boardgames: SPIEL! Hall after hall is filled to the brim with stalls full of games, dice and merchandise (like beautiful D&D tables!). Everywhere publishers present their new games on tables where visitors can sit down and try them. The fair was a little smaller this year due to you-know-what, but still there was more than enough fantasy and sci-fi themed games to gawk at. Unfortunately, I only got to play a couple of games, but a review of the quick social deduction game Quest is coming up! - Key

*F 🇺🇸 And once again @schmidt_spiele sends a #rollandwrite of the small and fine into the race. And once again there is something special. Because in this game we're going to snap off the corners one by one, and it feels a bit like origami hour. Well not really. Very easy to understand, and entertaining to play. So, should you still not have enough of making crosses, Kannste Knicken is a nice game on top of the pile. . . . Jamaica 🏴‍☠️
2-6 player Racing strategy game
Pros:
Game graphics at its best! Amazing design. I heard so much about the game so I really wanted to play it and yes the game was exceptionally good.
The battles between ships if they land in the same spot and the treasure cards (I mostly end up getting cursed treasure most of the time) are the highlights of the game.
Cons :
Sometimes the game ends really fast . I couldn’t tell that as a draw back but that’s the only thing that comes to my mind.
Bandit score: 🚢 🚢 🚢 🚢 🚢
