A couple of thoughts after re-watching TGM

What I think is actually canon

Amelia is Mav’s daughter (Penny hints at that when she’s talking to Mav about her) but Amelia doesn't know

Mav considers himself to be Bradley’s dad (Mav answers when Bradley asks his dad what to do) 

Bradley considers both Goose and Mav to be his dad (after Mav says that Bradley saved his life, Bradley says that his dad would've done the same - considering the fact that Mav has already saved Bradley's life you could see that as Bradley seeing Mav as his dad, too) 

Bradley has lived with Mav for a considerable period of time (Mav says to Penny he tried his best to be a father for Bradley) 

Thoughts concerning TG3 / Predictions 

I think they gonna set up Phoenix as Bradley's love interest because they seem very close in the movie (but for me they’re more like besties) 

I hope they gonna keep the character's of Warlock and Cyclone (with Cyclone basically hating Mav and Warlock secretly supporting the shit Mav does all the time) and also they need to keep at least Warlock because somebody needs to prevent that Mav is thrown out of the Navy

I hope there still will be references to Ice (I just love him and he needs to be mentioned) 

Other thoughts 

I actually paid attention to the hangster dynamics for the first time

Jake’s and Bradley’s first hook up is right after dogfight football

Bradley is Ice-coded while Jake is Mav-coded 

I ship bobnix now (I think Nat and Bob are very sweet together in the movie - need to find some fluffy fics about them)

The lifelong friendship between Ice and Mav just kills me (solely sticking to the movie here because otherwise icemav is endgame imo), like Ice basically knows everything about Mav (every shit he has done at work, everything around him pulling Bradley's papers, private problems he’s had etc.) and also the other way round (Mav supporting him during his battle with cancer and a whole lot of other things which we don't know because sadly Ice is only a minor character in both movies) 

I love that Mav refers to Ice in the whole movie only by his nickname

I had to keep myself very hard from crying during the funeral scene (if I had watched it alone, I probably would’ve cried)

After the bird strike, Phoenix is shaken and goes to a familiar face for comfort, perhaps the only person who could possibly understand

Crickets chirped in the background as she shuffled her way toward Bob’s quarters. Sleep was a fickle thing that she just couldn’t grasp, and after tossing and turning for hours, she’d finally given up and just did what she knew would work. She had to talk to the only person who could relate to her, Bob.

Now they’d been discharged, the true reality of what happened had truly hit her. She’d never lost control like that, never had a bird strike and never had to eject so immediately. Whenever she closed her eyes she could see the warning signs flashing and heard the beeps as they plummeted toward the ground. Seeing the flames as their jet blew up as it hit the side of the mountain would be an image she would never forget, for all the wrong reasons.

She wrapped her fingers against the door, knowing better than to just barge in. Bob could be asleep, of course, but something told her that he wasn’t. They’d been side by side in the hospital and she could tell that this was affecting his sleep too, or lack thereof. 

“Come in,” came a raspy voice.

The door creaked when she opened it. A lamp lit up the room from beside his bed. Bob put on his glasses from the bedside table but it didn’t seem like he’d been asleep. He was hunched over as he sat on the bed, he rubbed his face as he shuffled up. She couldn’t see his face clearly but she knew that every inch of anxiety and insomnia would be wrought in all his muscles.

“Can’t sleep?” He asked.

“No, you can’t either?”

He shook his head, he focused on his hands, “I just keep seeing us eject-”

“-but where we didn’t get out in time and we-” she couldn’t quite say it.

“Die?” Bob finished.

She just nodded, running a hand through her hair, a nervous tick of hers that she luckily avoided at work when her hair was up. 

“I know we’re okay, I know that, but there’s just something deep inside that makes me feel like I’m still there,” she said, shaking her hair again as she added. “And it just feels easier to get this out of my system to you, I don’t really know, it may be stupid.”

Bob sat up and smiled at her, placing a hand on her arm. The room seemed a little brighter when he did this, although the only source of light was still the lamp.

“It’s not, I mean I’ve been meaning to talk to you anyway, it just feels like you’re the only person I really can, apart from Maverick.”

Nat thought of Bradley. She’d never really understood the pain that his family had gone through after his dad’s death, but now she did, in a way. It was scary enough to eject and survive, she didn’t want to think about what would happen if Bob hadn't made it. Just the thought of seeing his lifeless body hanging from the parachute like Maverick had to with Goose made the pressure on her chest deeper.

“At least he’s leading the mission, if we need a little time then maybe we’ll get it,” Bob said. 

“Apart from the fact that we’ve only got a week until we’re due out for the mission,” she said. “So if we can’t fly tomorrow then we won’t be on that mission.”

She lowered her head. That place on the mission was her’s, she’d decided that the moment she arrived, but now it could be taken away because of something entirely out of her control. She hated that but now had to accept that it could be true.

Bob turned to face her, his hand on her’s settled some of her nerves. Nerves weren’t a thing she let take over her very often, but now, so vulnerable, she couldn’t deny it.

“So that’s what this is about,”

She sniffed, there was something about his presence that made her feel safe. He was her WSO so perhaps the fact that it was his knowledge that kept them in the air but she knew there was something else ruminating inside her.

“I want to go on this mission so badly but what if that happens again? If something goes wrong on that mission, none of us are coming back from it, that’s what Mav’s teaching us right?”

Bob cocked his head to the side and nodded, “Yeah, but he’s not telling us that to make us feel like shit, he just wants everyone to know that there’s more to learn, and that everyone has lives and people outside the navy that’ll be hurt.”

A shade of grey covered his face as he turned his head for a second. His shoulders tensed. Once he’d gulped, he seemed to collect himself but there was definitely something there that he wasn’t telling her.

“That’s why I’m so scared, I never really thought about how it would affect my family if I got hurt because I never got hurt, the navy trains it out of you because it makes you insecure,” she said. “Now all I can think about is how much it would hurt my mom if she found out I died because of some technical fault, I already got a panicked phone call from her when we were in the hospital.”

Again, Bob didn’t seem to have the words. She knew she was right, it wasn’t something you could debate. Which meant she wouldn’t get any peace. 

“But if that happens we can’t stop it, right?” 

“That’s not very comforting.” 

“What I mean is, the only thing we can do is try our best, fly our best and make the most of our training,” he wrapped his hands around hers. “You’re one of the best pilots I’ve ever flown with, Phoenix, and I know that you’ve got a place on this mission, so don’t let all these insecurities tell you what’s gonna happen when you make your future.”

She was at a loss for words. Bob could really surprise her at times. First by his ability to stay hidden, next by his witty remarks, and now by his surprisingly good advice. 

Running her hands over her face, she wiped the tears away. She brushed her hair away to make sure it didn’t stick and flopped onto Bob’s shoulder. When he wrapped an arm around her, fatigue flooded her as her body let her feel how ungodly tired the past few days had made her feel. Now the anxiety was gone, not entirely but kept at bay, she could just close her eyes right now.

Bob rested his head on her’s. They were safe, here on the ground. No ocean surrounding them, or air enclosing them, just safe on the ground. She closed her eyes and sleep without nightmares soon came to her.

I like the idea of Phoenix letting herself feel vulnerable around Bob. Also they'd probably be way more affected by the bird strike than is shown, but also neither of them are the kind to burst into tears randomly, not in the Navy, so they're crying here instead. Thanks for reading!

I desperately need to hear about 9! (and maybe 3 if you're feeling generous?)

YES i love talking about hangster

so #9 is a fic set a few years in the future where bradley and jake have been hooking up for the better part of a year when bradley is sent on a mission and asks jake to house sit for him. then bradley goes MIA and jake goes a little insane and spends a few weeks fixing up bradleys house (and like most everyone in that fandom, he’s living in his childhood home) and slowly, all the daggers (plus maverick, obviously) show up to remind him he has friends who care about him.

the way that this is currently 32k and just languishing in my wip folder omg 😅

and a snippet from that one because why not:

“You’re a real piece of shit, you know.” Phoenix calls up at him from the ground.

Jake glances down from the top of the ladder, one hand practically elbow-deep in the muck filling Rooster’s gutters. “Oh, I know.”

“My best friend is missing and I just wanted to talk to someone who knows how it feels.”

“Your husband already pulling away, Phoenix?” He jokes. “Never thought that day would come,” he tacks on, recognizing that maybe the joke was too harsh.

She shakes her head. “Bob loves him, but it’s not the same.”

“Bob probably gets it better than I do, Nat,” Jake says, grinning wickedly at her. “I’m just the boytoy.”

“I think you love him,” she says bluntly. “You don’t have to admit it to me. You don’t have to admit it to anyone. But the very least you could do for him is make sure his best friend doesn’t fall apart without him.”

That hits him right in the fucking chest.

She’s right.

All the shit Jake is doing to the house, and what he should be doing is taking care of Bradley’s people. Fuck. He should call Mav.

as for #3… yeah it’s a bonus chapter to even if it’s just pretend haha. when i was writing it, i was a day late posting the epilogue because i felt like i had to rewrite it, so im reworking the original epilogue and ill eventually post it, i swear!

there’s… not a ton of it to choose from, i reworked a lot of it into what was published and most of what’s left is just an outline, but here’s a little!!

Things are slightly different now, at least. Henry wears a pink tie with his charcoal suit, the rainbow pin stuck proudly to his lapel, and Alex leaves his collar open so Henry can be distracted by that divot at the base of his throat. And they're allowed to say the word "love" this time, and Henry gets to touch him when he needs reassurance, so while it's at least better than their last interview, it's still far from ideal.

snippets from sweet emotion? 👀

hello friend! the only WIP I'm actively working on is IBLBM, so I don't have a snippet for you. however, I can tell you that sweet emotion is a dual Coyote Ugly/Pretty Woman au that first came to mind when @pullmans and I watched Coyote Ugly together!

it goes like this: Jake and Bradley are still in the Navy, but they've never met before. there exists a thing where, when you fuck up and break something expensive or defy an order you really shouldn't but you're too good of a pilot to lose, the Navy makes you pay penance by way of working at the Hard Deck - a bar run not dissimilarly to Coyote Ugly. the idea is you either work there for the length of your probation, or you earn enough to pay back whatever damage you wrought on the poor taxpayers. how do you earn that money you ask? well, you can sell drinks like any regular schmuck OR you can dance that gorgeous body of yours on top of the bar.

working at the bar we have Jake, Javy, Nat and Bob. Nat sort of runs it - looooong probation - and Jake has been there the longest after her, then Javy, then Bob is a newbie (this fic will be Sereshaw with Bobnix as a sidepairing!). doing Regular Navy Things we have Bradley, Mickey and Reuben.

one night, Bradley et al. rock up to the bar because Mickey has heard about it and he wants to see if it's a tall tale or if it's actually true... and when they get there they see Jake and Javy grinding on top of the bar to some song with thumping bass wearing nothing but painted on jeans, cowboy boots and stetsons. there's maybe baby oil involved. the crowd is equal parts men and women and everyone is losing their minds, throwing cash, and listen, Bradley falls in love with Jake then and there.

the pretty woman aspect comes in to play in that Bradley's older by some indeterminate amount of years and, hearing of Jake's situation, does what he can to help get Jake his wings back. so!

I do like the thought of people asking questions the way tumblr does it just because my favorite thing to do in life is answer questions but we chillin

10: Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story?

IceMav - My favorite, top Top Gun ship. I've loved them since the '86 movie and I always thought, 'they'd make the perfect hero pair dynamic' so when the fic idea happened I just rolled with it. I thought they'd be the main pair but killshot took a turn I wasn't expecting but they're still my favorites.

Hangster - Rooster is a tortured little meow meow and Hangman deserves terrible things. He LOOKS the hero part and my brain sufficed with the 'but what ifs'. They're my TGM fave ship and I just couldn't stop myself!

Bobnix - I love Phoenix, I love Bob and unlike hangster they deserve good things. But on a more serious answer, I thought they'd make for a good counterpoint to hangster that is almost entirely tragedy at least for 2/3 of the story. Bobnix... ain't. And I think stories are more fulfilling when you have balanced aspects.

Bradley is a great friend, which is why he has a lot of friends. He does a lot of things for his friends, and hardly ever says ‘no’ to anything he’s asked to do.

Which is why he makes a great personal assistant to his boss, Bob Floyd, the editor of a popular New York magazine.

...It’s also why Bradley has been a Best Man 27 times, and counting.

One  reason Bradley loves being in his friends’ weddings (besides the fact that he has a hard time saying ‘no’) is because he’s a romantic at heart, he dreams about the day when it’ll be his turn to stand at the altar and say “I do”.

...And in a perfect world, that day would include his boss, Bob, being the one he was marrying.

Bradley has been in love with Bob for years, but never had the guts to say anything. Then during a seemingly sick twist of fate, Bradley’s sister Natasha comes to visit him, and Bob falls for her.

Things could not get any worse.

Until a few months later, when Bob proposes to Natasha, she says yes, and Bradley is about to be a Best for the twenty-eighth time...at the wedding of his sister and the man that he’s in love with.

During their wedding planning (which Natasha “lets” Bradley do most of), The three of them meet Jake, the reporter who’s going to do a feature article on Natasha and Bob’s wedding for his column in the newspaper. It’s a popular column, so Natasha is very excited, and it also happens to be Bradley’s favourite column to read.

...But Bradley has met Jake before, at another wedding. He didn’t know it was him then, but he remembers Jake going on and on about how he actually hates the idea of weddings and marriage...!

Bradley and Jake get off to a very rough start, with Bradley basically vowing to hate this wedding-hypocrite’s guts for all eternity. But as they spend more time together, during the wedding planning process, Bradley and Jake start getting closer...

But as the wedding date also starts getting closer, Bradley starts getting worried. He knows that Natasha has told Bob more than a few lies during their relationship, but should he tell Bob, or let his sister be happy? And what about his own happiness...? Will it include Bob after all, or maybe Jake?

Who will Bradley be wearing his twenty-eighth tux for...?
