A beautiful hardback proof of Signal Fires by Dani Shapiro was sent to me by the kind folk at @vintagebooks and I’m so glad I took them up on the offer to read this remarkable story. Thank you to them! This is the story of two very different families whose lives intersect in moments of crisis and need, which ends up having serious reverberations in the future. ⁣ ⁣ The story begins in 1985 and we are taken to one of those crisis points - three teenagers in a car who had been drinking, a horrific accident and we begin to see the aftershocks of that fatal night on the Wilf family, where Ben Wilf, a trained doctor and father of two of the teenagers, is first to respond at the scene. ⁣ ⁣ Nearby, we have the Shenkman family - a young couple expecting a baby who becomes Waldo, an intelligent boy who is fascinated by constellations and the connections between everything in the world. Sadly for him, his father struggles to connect both with his enthusiasm and forming a bond with his son. ⁣ ⁣ As the two families’ fates become entwined we begin to understand the deeper connections and crucial moments they’ve shared and will continue to share moving forwards. I loved how this inter-connecting thread of the narrative was woven between all the characters and expertly picked up at specific, important moments. ⁣ ⁣ Signal Fires is also a novel with so much heart and soul bursting from each page. The relationships that form and divide are so intricately woven that it was a pleasure to connect all the dots and to see the development/growth of characters as they are brought together in stressful and unprecedented situations. Waldo in particular had my heart from the very beginning and one of the most memorable scenes for me is one in which he introduces Dr Wilf to the magic of the constellations. This is a poignant and gorgeous story that I would highly recommend to fans of beautiful storytelling and complex family dynamics. ⁣ ⁣ Four solid stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 ⁣ #bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #reviewingbooksonthegram #giftedproofcopy #chattoandwinduspublishers #vintagepublishing #signalfires #danishapiro #memorablereads #fourstarreading #booksandplantsofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CoxkGmvrjxt/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It’s been 11 days and this book (The Prison Healer) still lives in my head rent free 😭 every time I think I’m over that final page, I close my eyes and it all comes rushing back... how long are book hangovers supposed to last again?? • If you haven’t seen my review for this beauty yet, have a look at my earlier posts or check add me on goodreads and see it there (link in my bio 😍)! The general gist was everyone should read this book because it’s amazing and Lynette Noni might be one of my new favourite authors 🙊 Also, the next book is coming out on 12th October 2021 (man do I love a quick turn around 😭) so not long to wait!! I read the synopsis for it on goodreads and I’m sobbing it looks so goodddd!!! This could be a new favourite series 🙊 • QOTD: What’s a book that lives rent free in your brain? • AOTD: This and The Wicked King - I’m still not okay 😭 • • • #theprisonhealer #lynettenoni #fairyloot #fairylootedition #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #fantasybooks #fantasy #readersofinstagram #bookworm #reading #gardenbooks #booksandplantsofinstagram #booksandplants #hardbacks #hardbackbooks #windowledge #tbpfeatures #mybookfeatures #bestlifebooklife #alwaysreading #sundayreading #bookhangover #bookhangovers #bookhangouttribe #booktoker #monthlybookbox #monthlysubscriptionbox #bookofthemonth #favouriteread https://www.instagram.com/p/CPO5-ylrtaP/?utm_medium=tumblr

I read the gripping Sundial as a buddy read as part of the #bitcrackbookclub after hearing several rave reviews. I had already read the author’s first novel, The Last House On Needless Street which left me with mixed feelings and a bit of a scrambled brain, I have to be honest! However, Sundial has completely won me over and I thoroughly enjoyed this clever and thought provoking story. ⁣ ⁣ This is the tale of a family - wife Rob and her husband Irving and their two daughters, Callie and Annie. Rob becomes particularly worried about her oldest girl Callie who collects bones and displays other worrying behaviours that reminds her of her old childhood growing up with her sister. Her relationship with Irving is also breaking down and causing her anxiety and stress. ⁣ ⁣ She takes Callie back to Sundial, her childhood home in the remote desert. It is here that we learn more about Rob’s dysfunctional childhood and a life-changing decision is made regarding what happens next for their family. ⁣ ⁣ This novel is relentlessly brutal! Everything from the characters, their actions in the past and present, their thoughts and feelings and the darker side of human nature is investigated like a creature under the microscope. It’s not a narrative for the faint-hearted. It’s twisted, ambitious and compelling and I admired how easily the author both played on my emotions and confused the hell out of me! ⁣ ⁣ Sundial is just as complex as The Last House On Needless Street with several shocking and surprising moments but for some strange and unknown reason, I enjoyed this so much more. The disgust I felt at the villainy of certain characters felt so visceral and I almost couldn’t keep to the schedule of our buddy read, I could have torn ahead so very easily. Highly recommended for fans of quirky, uncomfortable and thrilling fiction. ⁣ ⁣ Four solid stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 ⁣ #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #bookreview #bookreviewer #scottishbookstagrammer #sundial #catrionaward #thrillernerd #thrillerauthors #psychologicalthrillerbooks #unnervingbooks #memorablereads #unforgettablebooks #booksandplantsofinstagram #bookstokeepyouupatnight https://www.instagram.com/p/ChiB-DPL-46/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A River Enchanted is Rebecca Ross’ first adult fantasy novel and I had the pleasure of not only buddy reading it with @keeperofpages but reading the exclusive @illumicrate edition. This novel encompass dazzling mythological and folklore elements to tell the story of a land called Cadence and two childhood enemies who have no choice but to work together to try and figure out why young girls keep disappearing from their island. ⁣ ⁣ Jack has been away from Cadence for ten years, happily studying music over on the mainland at university. He is compelled to come home to help his old adversary Adaira and Adaira, heiress to the East, is confident that Jack can use the power of his music to communicate with the ancient spirits and seek advice from them regarding the mysterious disappearances. ⁣ ⁣ This book is an excellent introduction to fantasy and world-building for the fantasy shy reader. It’s not too complicated, it has the perfect amount of characters and it moves along at a great pace. There’s a lot of political intrigue between the different factions on the island and some very exciting moments that put a new twist on what may come next for the characters that we get to know. ⁣ ⁣ There is a relationship that may be slightly predictable and if you’re familiar with fantasy tropes you might already guess what I’m referring to, even if you haven’t read the book. However, even though something like that would usually irritate me, I couldn’t deny how much I was enjoying the magical moments, the world the author created and more specifically, the dalliances with spirits which was filled with beauty and tension in equal measure. I’ll certainly be reading the next book in the series and urge any fellow fantasy fans to give it a go! ⁣ ⁣ Four solid stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 ⁣ #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #bookreview #bookrecommendations📚 #ariverenchanted #rebeccaross #fantasynovels🖋️ #buddyreadswithjanel #readingwithmyfriends #fantasybooksseries #fantasybooksforbeginners #booksandplantsofinstagram #illumicrateexclusives https://www.instagram.com/p/ChVFnnvLNar/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
