In this house, we cheer Musk
Elon Musk is so skilled he makes it look easy to run SpaceX and a majority of the world's orbital lift, and this leads a lot of people to underestimate him. "He doesn't do shit, he just pays the engineers!" critics say. "I could have done the same if I had a billion dollars!" they imagine.
Well, such critics should pay more attention to Blue Origin, which demonstrates that "just" paying the engineers a billion dollars is not enough.
Blue Origin is a spaceflight company founded by billionaire Jeff Bezos in 2000, two years before SpaceX in 2002. Both spent some time laying groundwork and did their first test launches in 2006, the New Shepard and the Falcon 1 respectively.
SpaceX pushed ahead rapidly and first reached orbit in 2008 with the fourth flight of a Falcon 1. Blue Origin was slower, and first reached orbit in 2025 with the New Glenn. In the intervening time, SpaceX had accomplished several hundred orbital flights and increased its launch pace from "per year" to "per week". (130-something Falcon 9 launches in 2024.)
SpaceX also hit several other milestones like supplying the ISS with the Dragon 1 in 2012, first propulsive (vertical) landing of an orbital rocket stage with Falcon 9 in 2015, taking humans to orbit with the Dragon 2 in 2020. On a more abstract but also more practical note, SpaceX's Booster 1051 went from hopeful "it landed and we might reuse it" plans to definite "cycle it back into service, you know the drill" when it was reused for the tenth time in 2021.
Harder to measure is how much SpaceX decreased the cost of launching people and things to orbit for all their customers, but it's somewhere around an order of magnitude thanks to the combination of mass production and rocket reuse, where previous orbital launches tended to be artisanal one-offs. And it's still dropping.
I will return to that 'majority' point: consider the US and Soviet/Russian space program which are the two big ones, and the Chinese and Indian and Japanese and other government space programs too. Add the private competitors, like Orbital Sciences Corporation which put their Pegasus in orbit in 1990 and went on to relative success with several more orbital missions.
SpaceX first reached orbit in 2008, and by 2024 was outdoing all the above put together. This does not happen by simply throwing money at the problem, the Great Powers have far more money to throw at the problem. This was not replicated by competitors. You can tell nobody even got close, for SpaceX to perform a majority.
Blue Origin? eventually got to orbit this year, planning another launch later this year. Orbital Sciences Corporation that I mentioned above? shut down. Space Services Inc.? technically reached space in the sense of the Karman line (100km up) but not orbit, then shut down. Armadillo Aerospace? never made it.
Wealthy and technically competent people like John Carmack (better known for Id Software, Doom) tried to run private spaceflight companies, lost a lot of money and shut down with little to show for it. Most of them are forgotten quickly. Elon Musk has put SpaceX so far ahead of the real alternatives, people lose sight of those and start comparing him to imaginary alternatives.

When you're playtesting limited, at what point do you start to care about proper collation of packs and how do you go about constructing the packs for playtesting. I guess more specifically, how do you make playtest boosters that ensure that commons and uncommons show up at proper rates but without having multiple in the same pack.
That happens in set design, once the file is starting to look closer to real. We have software to match pack collation.

When all conventional means of machine combat are forclosed, only unconventional means remain: This is what seperates the aces from the jobbers, bitches: the capacity to improvise.
A fighter pilot will jam the WEZ, that's weapon engagement zone: the minimum arming range of a missile before it will hurt both the enemy and yourself -- but what about mech pilots?
You get up in their BAZ; the Ballistic Attack Zone, with the tip of the barrel behind you. How do you stay safe up close like this?
You ever seen any soft-bodied octopus or starfish get into a crab?
They have hard bodies and are all soft underneath, like a mech. They're not impervious.
Why? Any hard body is made of levers:
Drive any joint to its limit and you have an instant fulcrum to rip at the inner structures and shatter the outer form.
But then what?
No blades? No pile bunkers? No problem.
Ground talons. Rollers. Grappling hooks. Joints.
The sheer fucking mass and density of your armour plating.
Your whole body is a weapon.
Some of you make 3:1 against your mass with your boosters.
That's a lot of energy and if it has nowhere to go very bad things happen.
Some of you can do this with neural implants but you've got biofeedback out of the wazoo to contend with, which is why so many of you go twinkly eyed with overload daze out when you lock up with an opponent.
The smart among you are already running a specialist grips and inceptors in your cockpits, so you can dip out of the feedback when you need to and you're TAZ compliant: that's TORSION, ASPECT and ZONE controller, so named for the work of a Dr Senerchia, a fighter who deserved better than they got, and a treasure to us all.
So what does that mean to you?
A mixture of special software, and a pair of extra thumbsticks for your index fingers on your grips above the triggers.
Those of you familiar with loaders or cargo-work will find it familiar.
The rest of you: they're there to override and guide cueing information based entirely on brutal trial and error that'll make the size or weight of your frame irrelevant in CQB.
You can't rely on fixed solvers and playback to do the work for you with some existing motion-plan: You need to invent a new one on the fly using all of your fine control inputs.
So how is this relevant to you?
A Class A heavy support is fucked against a Class F attacker surely with the height difference and loadout, right? That's fifty tons of mass and nine meters of stature apart.
But watch an A slam its talons into the dirt, wrap the F with its wire anchors, and then perform a boost suplex, knock its barrels under the deflection plating of the other guy and follow-up up with a full sabot alpha-strike at point blank.
Any trainer worth their salt will teach you this shit.
You should know how to grapple with your sisters, and to practice regularly in and out of the cockpit. You need to get familiar with how bodies roll across eachother in motion.
You get lucky and you'll get some special training with oxytocin boosting mucus membrane massage and carotid restraint to simulate g-loc until you see stars to keep it memorable.

I had to appease my inner child and made a Sonadow fankid.
This is Static. He was made by Tails to be Sonic and Shadows son.

He's a very curious child who shares his fathers love of adventure. However, he can be pretty shy and takes a while to warm up to strangers.
Static was built to be as lifelike as possible. While he needs a charge to regain energy, he is fully capable of eating and sleeping.
Tails also gives him upgrades every few years to simulate getting older (e.g. making him taller and providing software updates to his personality).
The little hearts on his palms can produce a little electric shock, just enough to stun a badnik (Shadow wanted him to have some sort of way to defend himself).
He has rocket boosters built into his back and the soles of his boots, so he's able to keep up with his parents.
Shadow also has slight PTSD, so Static is built to help him the best he can. He can detect when Shadow is having a night terror and when he is having a panic attack (he monitors his heartbeat for irregular activity). He's kind of like a service/support animal.
His scarf was a sort of 'birthday' gift from Amy. She was so happy becoming an aunt, she immediately had to spoil her nephew.
Static actually see's most of the main cast as aunts/uncles.

A brilliant inventor in Italy created a device he dubbed the Bolt Booster. The booster can store and release massive amounts of electricity capable of supercharging machines. However nobody would buy it due to the cost of production. One day he met a man named Alessandro Voltolini who agreed to fund the production of the Bolt Boosters. The inventor and his siblings went to work making the first set of the boosters immediately. One night however there was an accident when the main Booster overloaded and exploded, seemingly killing Alessandro. One year later though Alessandro resurfaced, now calling himself the Bolt Baron he exhibits electric powers and leads a force of robots all powered by Bolt Boosters to take over the world. Racked with guilt the inventor creates gear for him and his siblings to use as Power Rangers to defeat this threat.

Red Boost Ranger- Enrico Cavalcante- A tech genius who gave up many opportunities to help raise his two younger siblings. He created the Bolt Booster system but was unable to find anyone willing to listen to him until he met a rich young man named Alessandro who agreed to fund his project. Enrico never told his siblings the truth of the accident. He discovered Alessandro was attempting to weaponize the Bolt Boosters and a fight broke out which led to the main Booster overloading. Out of guilt Enrico created the morphers and zords to combat Alessandro when he resurfaced as the Bolt Barron. Blaze Booster- Months after forming the Rangers, Enrico returned to the scene of the the accident and recovers one of his prototype Boosters. He deemed this particular model a failure due to it creating intense amounts of heat. With Lorenzo's help Enrico reworks the Blaze Booster into a battilizer, using the excess heat to supercharge its weaponry including a powerful blaster that shoots high pressure water. Black Boost Ranger- Giovanni Romano- A romantic who once dated Mari before the two had a mutual break up. Not long after she introduced Giovanni to her brother Rinaldo and the two began dating. Orange Boost Ranger- Beatrice Valenti- A childhood friend of the siblings who spent most of her time at their home in order to escape her own broken home. After graduation she even lived with them until finding a place of her own. Hides her insecurities about not being as gifted as the others beneath a joking carefree exterior. Became a ranger to help repay the siblings for all they've done for her. Face Claim: Angela Giarratana

Violet Boost Ranger- Lorenzo Adesso- The illegitimate son of Alessandro. For years he hated his father for casting his mother and him out to protect his own image. One day not long after witnessing the Bolt Barron's announcement Lorenzo receives a package in the mail containing a Bolt Booster and a morpher as well as instructions on how to modify it. The package also included a note from Alessandro claiming that Enrico was to blame for the accident that turned him into the Bolt Barron. Lorenzo used the morpher to confront the Rangers only to learn the truth about the accident. Angered at having been used as a pawn by Alessandro he vows to avenge himself and his mother and finally get revenge for all that his father has done by joining the Rangers. The Red, Blue and Pink Boost Rangers are armed with the Bolt Blasters and Booster Batons. Mari often improvises using the Baton upside down as the Booster Basher. When in Boost the power can be channeled into this to shoot pulses of energy. The Black and Orange Boost Rangers are armed with the Bolt Axes and Booster Blades. The Violet Boost Ranger is armed with the Bolt Bow. All the Rangers can use the tires on their suits for travel or attacks. Enrico can also call on the Trailer Cannon which the Rangers load their cars into to launch at the enemy. The Rangers can release the built up charge in their morphers to access a Booster mode. This supercharges their bodies with electricity enhancing their speed and striking power as well as the ability to launch energy tires at enemies. They can only maintain this for two minutes without risking harm.
By using the Motor Storm Zord with their morphers the Rangers gain the Motor Storm Form in which they are able to summon any zord weapon.

Bolt Baron and his Lightning Legion
The Bolt Baron- Alessandro Voltolini- A man of great wealth and grand goals. He saw the potential of the Bolt Boosters the moment he met Enrico. Unfortunately that potential was to turn them into weapons of war. When Enrico found out the two fought causing the main Booster to overload and explode. During the explosion Alessandro's body was altered somehow allowing him to generate electricity from his own body. Fleeing the scene he hid in a secret factory he had planned to use to make the weapons. He spent months testing his new powers and using what he had learned from Enrico to build his own Bolt Boosters. He also built himself a set of powered armor to wear into battle. He then created a legion of robotic warriors to do his bidding.
BoomBlast- A robotic warrior capable of generating explosive waves from his body. His ego is stronger than his attacks. Thunder Tigress- A feline robot whose claws are charged with electricity. To the Barron's dismay she's just as lazy as a house cat. HiJax- A fixer bot who acts as Bolt Baron's confidant
Spirill- A warrior wielding a powerful drill and a drive to win no matter the cost. Created specifically to fight the Rangers. Rebuilt into stronger forms after defeats. Maddox- A repair bot who upgrades bots to increase their attack power. Recykil- A repair bot who can rebuild destroyed bots stronger than before. Jeevolt- A bodyguard for the Baron fashioned in the image of a butler. Bolt Breaker- A war machine built in the image of the Bolt Booster Megazord. BoltBots- Mass produced robotic warriors
Power Rangers Armored Boosters: A member of the Insetario still loyal to the previous warlord escapes stealing a Potenseto. They find their way to Earth where they steal a Bolt Booster and use it to boost the Potenseto's power causing both teams of Rangers to unite to deal with the threat.
Morphers: Bolt Morphers- Wrist worn Bolt Boosters. Red Blue Pink Hand Held- Black and Orange Gauntlet mounted- Violet Morphing Call: Boost Up the Power!
Morphing: The Rangers activate their Bolt Boosters and a ranger colored energy wheel is generated. As they activate it the morpher announces "Bolt" "Bolt Boost" "BOLT BOOSTERS!". They shoot it and when it hits a surface it speeds back to them. It then spins around the ranger from their feet up forming the suit before becoming the visor.

Listening to the New York Times podcast Hard Fork, and just now where they were talking about "AI snobs." "If someone says they don't use AI, they're probably lying."
Ive been frustrated with this podcast for awhile now, but episode this made me unsubscribe. I'm gonna yell about it for a sec.
They are fine with junior engineers checking in AI solutions. This tells me they haven't worked on a single software project a day in their life (true, they are journalists). It is very important that a junior learns how to think through problems!! It is very important that everyone involved understands the code!!! Copy-paste code is likely to have non-obvious bugs and is often difficult to modify. Writing code that's easy to modify is one of the most important skills software engineers can acquire. I could go on.
They made the assertion that AI can come up with better ideas and write better prose than they could on their own. If that's true? Respectfully, then change careers to something that doesn't require creativity. Its prose is vapid and its ideas are boring, and if you can't do better than it, you're just not very good at writing! I'm sorry. There are classes you can take to improve if this is the case.
Finally, back to "if you say you don't use AI you're lying." Bro, I gave it a good faith effort, since y'all wouldn't shut up about it. I got a Copilot license at work. I've tried brainstorming creative ideas with it. And in every. single. case, it's been inferior to asking other humans.
And all this doesn't even touch on the IP theft or environmental concerns.
tldr: Fuck AI and fuck AI boosters.

While I don't think the water use of data centers is the most pressing threat to conservation (depending on their location - in the desert, where the water is coming from aquifers, it's probably ecologically irrational for human settlements out there in the medium to long run), it is telling that the digital technology conglomerates who are trying to commercialize "AI" have been understating the carbon and water costs of these new data centers by so much.
The motivated "AI" boosters will claim in response that the technology will just improve continually and smoothly, if not exponentially, such by this time next year we won't even be thinking of the social or environmental costs of web-scale "AI" training or querying of web-scale "AI" models - we'll all be too easy enjoying the dividends of The Singularity (i.e., we'll all be disembodied silicon brains jerking ourselves off to infinity and beyond). This is the most rank wannabelieve, motivated often enough by a really religious belief in artificial intelligence and its implications for the species (you might as well worship fire, man).
Commercialized "AI" software isn't just using singularity wannabelieve for marketing, often its developers and pushers believe in it themselves, and I'm convinced that top executives at Microsoft and Alphabet probably believe in it wholeheartedly, given how much money they've thrown at money-burning techno-cults like OpenAI.

Journey to a Water World: NASA’s Europa Clipper Is Ready to Launch
Find details about the launch sequences for the orbiter, which is targeting an Oct. 14 liftoff on its mission to search for ingredients of life at Jupiter’s moon Europa.
In less than 24 hours, NASA’s Europa Clipper spacecraft is slated to launch from the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard a Falcon Heavy rocket. Its sights are set on Jupiter’s ice-encased moon Europa, which the spacecraft will fly by 49 times, coming as close as 16 miles (25 kilometers) from the surface as it searches for ingredients of life.
Launch is set for 12:06 p.m. EDT on Monday, Oct. 14, with additional opportunities through Nov 6. Each opportunity is instantaneous, meaning there is only one exact time per day when launch can occur. Plans to launch Europa Clipper on Oct. 10 were delayed due to impacts of Hurricane Milton.
With its massive solar arrays extended, Europa Clipper could span a basketball court (100 feet, or 30.5 meters, tip to tip). In fact, it’s the largest spacecraft NASA has ever built for a planetary mission. The journey to Jupiter is a long one — 1.8 billion miles (2.9 billion kilometers) — and rather than taking a straight path there, Europa Clipper will loop around Mars and then Earth, gaining speed as it swings past.
The spacecraft will begin orbiting Jupiter in April 2030, and in 2031 it will start making those 49 science-focused flybys of Europa while looping around the gas giant. The orbit is designed to maximize the science Europa Clipper can conduct and minimize exposure to Jupiter’s notoriously intense radiation.
But, of course, before any of that can happen, the spacecraft has to leave Earth behind. The orbiter’s solar arrays are folded and stowed for launch. Testing is complete on the spacecraft’s various systems and its payload of nine science instruments and a gravity science investigation. Loaded with over 6,060 pounds (2,750 kilograms) of the propellant that will get Europa Clipper to Jupiter, the spacecraft has been encapsulated in the protective nose cone, or payload fairing, atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, which is poised for takeoff from historic Launch Complex 39A.
Launch Sequences
The Falcon Heavy has two stages and two side boosters. After the side boosters separate, the core stage will be expended into the Atlantic Ocean. Then the second stage of the rocket, which will help Europa Clipper escape Earth’s gravity, will fire its engine.

The glass door to the employee hallway whispering shut felt like a stone rolling over the entrance of her tomb. Bea fell back into bed, fell back into the void inside herself she’d pried open. It was the same one she recognized in V and it was for the same purpose: to protect herself from her own emotions.
The only logical reason she could think Frederick was doing this to her was just simple revenge. Which was boring and pathetic and she never missed a chance to remind him how little she thought of him. She resisted every chance she got. Frederick liked to play with her and would let her scratch and spit and claw like a feral cat until she got too close and he’d trigger the programming preventing her from hurting him.
The Animals that guarded her booth 24/7 were too strong for her. The first time she’d tried to escape, they had posted two at the entrance to her booth and two outside in the employee hallway. She’d tried to slip out the back, thinking if she was just quiet and low to the ground she could trip them up. She’d taken down dozens of goons with just her hands and her wits, but the Animals employed at the club were chipped and roided to high heaven. She was fast, but she wasn’t faster than a Sandevistan with reflex boosters. She was strong, but she wasn’t stronger than an Animal with an arm nearly as thick as her entire body. Multiple fractures and dislocations later, and she’d accepted she could only bide her time.
They let Betty visit her and eventually got rid of the goons patrolling the hallway as long as she stopped trying to escape. So, she stopped trying to escape. But she never stopped fighting. As soon as one of them or Frederick entered the booth, she was on them in a flash. Of course, it always ended with her injured or Frederick triggering the passive programming, but hey, at least she wasn’t trying to escape.
But then it started to wear on her. The memory erasing function was becoming less and less effective and the more memories she retained of what Frederick did to her or allowed his friends to do to her, the less she felt like fighting. She tried to compartmentalize it, to overwrite it with other memories, to plot revenge, to imagine how she would kill Frederick and how she would make him feel every second of it.
It was never enough.
She folded her ring finger and jacked into the port by the bed. She’d never met the club techie face to face, he had an office near the center of the club, Bea had passed by the door when she went to Mr. Nobody’s office to interview. But she got to know him with how frequently she was jacking into the central line to run maintenance on Frederick’s custom software. They’d talk through an intercom by the port and he’d tell her about the latest game he was playing or movie he just saw. He sounded young to her, too young to be working in a place like this. Their talks, though brief, were a connection to the outside world she cherished.
The first time the memory eraser only got 50% of the way through before crashing, she’d asked him if it was possible to upload a program when a client wasn’t in the room. He said it was.
Bea watched in her retinal display as a loading bar appeared, showing her the “sex kitten” routine upload progress. It was just a courtesy the techie had given her, dolls never knew or needed to know the names of programs they were running. They just jacked in, disappeared for a bit, and jacked out when they were back.
The Animals usually had to force her back out. But the handful of hours of mindless bliss she got were worth it every time. She hoped she wasn’t getting the techie in trouble, but the fact he kept doing it for her was a good sign.
She closed her eyes and felt her body sink into the shag carpet from a vintage 1970s porno mag. When she opened them again, she wasn’t Bea. She wasn’t stuck in a doll booth waiting for Frederick’s next torture. She had never been a solo for Arasaka. She had never been a nomad. She had never been Bea.
She was nobody.
