Pawn Sacrifice is a 2014 film directed by Edward Zwick and written by Steven Knight.

The film stars Tobey Maguire and Liev Schreiber as chess champions Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky. The film received mostly positive reviews, with particular praise from critics for Tobey Maguire's performance.

Chess champion Bobby Fischer prepares for the world chess title final in Iceland, where he will face Russian champion Boris Spassky. Their match will go down in history as the match of the century.

Production of the film began in early October 2013 in Reykjavík, Iceland. Filming moved to Montreal, Canada in mid-October and wrapped in Los Angeles in December 2013.

The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2014.

The film grossed a total of $6 million, of which $2.4 million in North America, against a budget of $19 million.

he claims chess is set to return to broadway in 2025, he doesn't know what theater yet. (i'll believe it when there's a theater and dates...)

he said he wasn't going to attempt to explain the plot of chess. fair.

he did a lot of ragging on the broadway production (when he first mentioned chess and a lot of people clapped, he quipped that we must not have seen that version.) he thinks the one good thing to come out of it was "someone else's story."

he thinks "pity the child" is one of his best songs but his mom, just joking he hopes, didn't think so. he reassured her that it is not about her.

as we know, he was inspired to write the show because of bobby fischer and boris spassky and in particular, feeling like he was supposed to support fischer just because he's the american vs the russian, even though he was such an unpleasant guy.

I think the narrative around the world famous Bobby Fischer vs Boris Spassky match as being a triumph of America over the Soviet Union during the Cold War is silly.

Yes, Fischer was one of the greatest chess players of all time. I don’t think there’s any doubt about that. But when you look at the world chess champions between 1947 and 1991 you find:

You have to squint *really* hard to think America is in any way winning here. The Soviet Union really was just better at producing top chess players than America during the Cold War era. This is not a moral claim nor is it equivalent to saying the Soviet Union valued intelligence more than the United States. I think a good explanation for this fact is that the Soviet Union cared more about producing top chess players than the United States did. And this explanation is almost plausible until you hear stories about how invested the American government was in making the match happen after Fischer threatened to drop out. Apparently Henry Kissinger called Fischer personally to advise him to take the match. It seems odd to me that they cared when they were winning, but not at all when they weren’t. Beyond odd… straight up silly.
