I present to you my years long obsession - female America.
This is not a Nyotalia version it's just a concept of "what if everything is the same but Alfred was born a girl". Like i see so much potential! In a world where all the odds are stacked against her, she despite it all gets to where she is today. Making good and bad decisions along the way.
A lil hc/backstory for my main girl:
• Given name (by dad Arthur) is Elizabeth Felicity Kirkland but during the revolution changes her last name to Jones. Her first name change happens in the 1820/1830s when she changes it to Alexandra, also dropping her second name. (I was young when I came across the name and it means "defender/protector of man" and I was /obessed/ so i just stick to it since she is a loser and just thinks it's a cool sounding name)
• She goes by Alex/Al and I think that's neat :)
• My girl is tall. Like 181 cm tall. Sender but with visible muscles. She does want a bigger behind but her Anglo-Saxon genetics say nah.
• As a child she spent more time in England due to her being a girl so I think even if Arthur was absent he didn't allow her to spend much time alone in the colonies. She resents that ofc
• Just like with Alfred, Alex is very fkn close to Matt even if she forgets to call him or check up on him for months at a time. Al: "Hey man I know I just called a while ago but how've you been? Matt: "you called me 5 months ago..."
• Works at NASA as a part time aeronaitical engeneer. Loves physics, hates chemistry (self projection im sorry)
• During the revolution she dressed up as a boy but the people she worked with knew she wasn't one. People went along with it anyway.
• Other than during the American revolution, she dressed in feminine presenting clothes up until the 1930s. After that it was trousers all the way!
• Alex was never a nurse during wartime but definitely did accountaint work in ww1 and later joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) where she stayed until 1943 when she joined her men fighting on the ground ( Conversion to Army status, Women's Army Corps - WAC). That's when she saw actual combat.
• Isn't fond of birds. Canaries are fine. Eagles are unsettling.
• Obsesses over a certan thing/hobby at a time up to a point where she perfects her skill. When she was about 14 (human years) it was the whole freedom and equality of man and all the politics regarding it. In the 1890s her obession was cars and motor vehicles. The 1910s brought a new obsession on womens rights. 1960s was space exploration where she devoted almost all her time researching and working for NASA, disregarding her goverment/state duties as a country. In the 1980s it was the internet. In 1990s she got really interested in the Balkan wars (self insert >:)) for whatever reason. Today her attention is mostly on social media and her attention span ia short af. Still really likes all things tech.
• Hasn't got many properties/real estate. Al does own a penthouse in Seaport, Boston and a late 17th and early 18th century colonial home in Newbury, Boston (that she needs to renovate asap). The only other real state she owns is in California, though modern and recently buit, it's not big nor does she spend much time there.
• Her personality is basicaly Alfred if he grew up as a woman and had to face opression based on sex and inequality that came with it. So still bubbly, extroverted, a social butterfly but also self-serving, idealistic, manipulative sprinkled in with sarcasm, cautiousness and craftiness. Same feckin sense of humour tho.
• In 1783, at the Treaty of Paris in Versailles both her and her father had to sign the document that started her independence (She herself had a human representitive 'cus of her age/sex bla bla but it was mostly formalities). At that signing Arthur gave her a flintlock pistol that he himself used in the 1640s. Not many words were exchanged, he just put it in her hand to keep. She still has it in her attic. Somewhere. She'd find it if she just takes the time to look for it I'm sure.
• In 1889 she straight up did her first war crime/murder of a fellow nation (if you don't count shooting her pops face off at Saratoga in 1777). After an altrication with Antonio that resulted in him insulting and slapping the girl for her audacity and mouthiness, she punched him straight in the jaw. A fight insued where she got ahold of his belt and straight up strangled him. Took her a while to process that and accept it. On the bright side Antonios scilence was heard around the world and while perplexed and insulted, older and influential (mostly male at that point) nations started to feel a glint of respect forming for the young startup.
• Al was given a family pocket watch by her father in the 90s (No more empire for Arthur so he sad :(((((( ) that was suppoaed to go to a firstborn son of a lord as an inheritance symbol. Everyone thought Jack would get it since Matt is techincally not Arthur's son. But even he would be expected to recieve it before Al. Then in an unexpected turn of events, while visiting her grumpy and nostalgeous empire-missing dad, Arthur pulled out the watch while eating stale kebabs in front of the telly and gave it to her casualy without as much as a word (The empire started with her, it shall end with her). She keeps it in her work desk drawer in a wooden box.
• Al and Zee have an interesting relationship. While being different in almost every aspect, there ia a mutual respect for eachother from eachother. While not really being able to see eye to eye, they are sisters in a certain roundabout and very fucked up way. Girls who learned that they are very much judged by their sex despite being daughters of a high ranking British lord. While aware that she will never be Alex/Elizabeth in her fathers eyes, Zee still gets treated as a treasure by her father. Much to Zee's annoyance.
• It's still Matt who's in Alex's shadow. Despite the dificulties she rises above and is the perfect child of an empire. Smart, intelligent, inquisitive, a fast learner and incredibly aware of the political and historical situation at all times. Even despite being a girl and less than a son in the eyes of a 17th/18th century society, she suceeds.
• Arthur wanted a son to come from his colonial endeavours, as all empires/nobility at the time did. And as all other empires at the time had. But ofc karma is a bitch and he's the only empire with an only child being a daughter. Though at first thougrly dissaponted, when he lays his eyes on his daughter for the first time, the only emotion he can feel is /joy/.
• Instead of sowing/knitting Al's education was very much focused on natural sciences, since that is where Arthur quickly realized she exels at. He swapped her Violin and General History of Music lessions with Astrophysics and The History of Astronomy. All in an attempt to stop her from making his ears bleed from the constant prattling about The Four Square Theorem or The Brachistocrone Curve. It only got worse, but his daughter was happy and content.
I have sooooo many more of these jfc i might do more later but for now this is all I can think of.
TLDR: Female America is great and has so much potential as a character hghhhhhhhh

Depending on who you talked to, James Jackson was either a con man, a genius, a degenerate gambler, a reincarnated shaman from ages past, or some combination of all four. “Jim”, as his friends and detractors called him, was a strange man. He was a self-educated thinker who was absolutely convinced that he was possessed of talents that approached the supernatural.     He may have been right: in the history of American enterprise there was no one quite like Jim Jackson. His overall demeanor and presentation to all who interacted with him was that of a self-styled cowboy; he wore ostrich-leather boots, always had a Marlboro cigarette in his mouth, and owned a ten gallon hat in every color in the catalog, and spoke with a drawl so thick that he could easily be mistaken for a man out of time. This man, who came to embody every myth of the western oilman and whose exploits would someday captivate a nation, had not stepped foot in Texas until his twentieth birthday. He never made a dime from oil. Jim was born in Boston on July 16th, 1945 at the exact instant that the first atomic bomb was detonated two thousand miles away in New Mexico. He was the youngest of four children to Walter and Evelyn Jackson; Evelyn was a classically-trained stage actress who came from old money tied up in real estate in the northeast. Walter was a prolific and brilliant chemist who directed a research group for Bell Telephone Laboratories. During the war, Walter’s team was instrumental in developing the membranes necessary for the gas-diffusion method of enriching uranium for the Manhattan Project. Walter moved his family from Boston to San Jose, California in 1949 to partner with one of his former colleagues in founding a new applied science company. This new venture, Allied Micromaterials Corporation, would become one of the pioneering institutions in the development of semiconductors and later transistors. Contacts Walter had maintained in the defense department led to Allied receiving a contract to manufacture guidance systems for a new range of ICBM missiles, and by the middle of the 1950s, Walter was a very wealthy man. As a boy, Jim was bright but had no patience for school. On several occasions he was found cutting class to wander along a creek that ran through the family’s estate. The land had been an apricot orchard before being purchased by his father, and a young Jim spent every spare minute he could find playing cowboy in the pastoral grove of trees. His patient mother indulged his fantasies and sent him to dude ranches and paid for horse riding lessons in the hopes it might instill a sense of discipline. By Jim’s sixteenth birthday he was showing signs of restlessness in the rapidly-urbanizing Californian environment, and entered into frequent arguments with his exasperated father. When he told Walter that he had no interest in attending college, and instead mentioned the then-escalating conflict in Vietnam, his father shouted him down. Angry but determined, a seventeen year old Jim walked to an army recruitment station the very next morning. It was of no use, however; through Walter’s many ties to the U.S. defense industry, it was essentially guaranteed that Jim would never see combat. For the young man who yearned to see the world and longed for an adventure to break the monotony of his sheltered upbringing, this was the final straw. On a spring day in 1962, James Jackson packed a small bag and left home. From San Jose he took a train to Carson City, Nevada with the intent of finding work at one of the horse ranches from his childhood. When he arrived, a new subdivision had taken its place, with any traces of the ranches long gone. For two months he washed dishes in a casino buffet in Reno to pay for accrued gambling debts. From Nevada he hitchhiked to Idaho where he cut onions for 80¢ a day until the winter season forced him to move on. For three years he stumbled from job to job, lumberjacking in Washington state, fitting irrigation pipe in Arizona, welding in Alaska, mining Molybdenum in Colorado, and eventually working as a roughneck in an oilfield outside of Odessa, Texas. These three years had hardened young Jim and for the first time he felt at home among the wildcatters and oilmen in the dust and sun of west Texas. The challenge of the work invigorated him. The harsh conditions of the desert inspired him. The boom-bust cycle of the petroleum industry, however, did little to help secure the human needs of food and shelter. The men who made the real money on the drilling sites, Jim had noticed, were the geologists; those who only found the oil and didn’t stick around to do the hard work of pulling it out of the ground. Jim was charismatic, and it wasn’t long before he found work as an assistant for a local surveying office and began to learn the fine art of finding things underground. (edited) He was almost ready to settle down when he received a call from home: His father had suffered an intracranial aneurysm and had died before emergency medical treatment could be administered. For the first time in years, he went home. In the days after Walters funeral, Jim was forced to confront his future. Jim was twenty, with little occupational prospects, but now had a twenty-five thousand dollar inheritance; enough in 1965 to get into nearly any business he wanted. He knew he still didn’t have the patience for college, and he had already figuratively “gone west.” Out of either a feeling of guilt, or a desire to not cause any further trouble to his family in California, he returned to Texas with the goal of finally striking out on his own. By 1973, James Jackson was a man who, at least on the surface, betrayed no insecurities about his expertise. He exuded confidence and, after a few lucky breaks locating petroleum where none was thought to have existed, was billed as a “guru of the underground”. A small office was leased in Midland, a clerk and eventually a geologist, a few engineers and surveyors were hired. For a short time it was a mundane but generally honest living. What he lacked in experience as the chief of the small firm he more than made up for in the energy and zeal he brought to every job he undertook. He detested office work and would personally show up to every site, rain or shine, with the enthusiasm and showmanship of a circus ringmaster. The job for Dale Whitmer was no exception.

*books with great love stories and plots that don’t just revolve around them.
SORROW AND BLISS by Meg Mason
Martha’s marriage is falling apart, because there’s something wrong with her but nobody has been able to tell her what. We go back in time to relive all the ups and downs of Martha and Patrick’s relationship to find out if they can make it out together. Beautiful story about mental health and love and family.
TOMORROW AND TOMORROW AND TOMORROW by Gabrielle Zevin
Sadie and Sam love each other but are never lovers and we follow their journey for 30 years, from Boston to California as they develop together a video game and a complicated personal relationship. Very fun book about gaming and being best friends who are often in love with each other and often very mad at each other.
UNLIKELY ANIMALS by Annie Hartnett
Emma flies home from California to New Hampshire as a Med school dropout when her dad is diagnosed with a brain disease. At home her parents are in a fight, her brother is just out of rehab and her childhood best friend is missing. She scrambles to find her feet and pull everyone together. This is such a CUTE, heart lifting book with great characters and GHOSTS.
NEVER LET ME GO by Kazuo Ishiguro
Kathy, Tommy and Ruth are three best friend who have grown up in an English boarding school. But throughout their childhood many things felt wrong and as they grow and leave school they realize just how many secrets were kept from them. It’s a love story! It’s a mystery! It’s a critique of human arrogance!
NO LAND TO LIGHT ON by Yara Zghaeib
Hadi and Sama are a Syrian couple living in the USA. As they are waiting for the birth of their son, Hadi leaves to visit his family and then their lives are uprooted by a travel ban. Sama and Hadi are forced apart and as the physical and emotional distance between them grows, they try to find their way back to each other. This is a pretty sad one, I can’t lie, but such a beautiful story.
YOUNG MUNGO by Douglas Stuart
Mungo meets James in their housing estate in Glasgow. They are young and lonely, they become friends and they fall in love. Unfortunately Mungo is a Protestant and James is a Catholic, and where they’re from these things matter, especially to Mungo’s brother, a violent gang leader. This is not a very happy book either but it is THE best story about being young and falling in love. PLEASE READ THIS. Then come talk to me about it.
REAL LIFE by Brandon Taylor
Wallace is working toward a degree in the Midwest. But he’s Black and he’s queer and he feels distance between himself and his colleagues. We follow him through a summer weekend he spends with his college friends, finding out truths about them and about himself. I will never tire of recommending this book. It’s just so interesting and well written. And lovely words about the start of a relationship.
THE NIGHT CIRCUS by Erin Morgenstern
There is a circus that arrives without warning and is only open at night. Behind the scenes two magicians, Celia and Marco, are involved in a duel they’ve been training for since childhood. But despite all that, they fall in love. This is a fantasy novel that will for sure appeal to any fans of the genre. It’s fun and the aesthetics are sublime.
OPEN WATER by Caleb Azumah Nelson
Two young people meet at a pub in South East London. Both are Black British, both won scholarships to private schools where they struggled to belong, both are now artists - he a photographer, she a dancer - trying to make their mark in a city that by turns celebrates and rejects them. Tentatively, tenderly, they fall in love. So beautiful, so well written. Reads like falling in love feels like. LOVE IT.
SWIMMING IN THE DARK by Tomasz Jedrowski
Set in early 1980s Poland against the violent decline of communism, a tender and passionate story of first love between two young men who eventually find themselves on opposite sides of the political divide. It’s beautiful and poetic and quite sad. Stunning characters, stunning descriptions.
LAST NIGHT AT THE TELEGRAPH CLUB by Malinda Lo
Seventeen-year-old Lily Hu can’t remember exactly when the question took root, but the answer was in full bloom the moment she and Kathleen Miller walked under the flashing neon sign of a lesbian bar called the Telegraph Club. This is so SWEET. Lily is such a great character and her story fills your heart with pain and glee and pride. I love this book and this wonderful story.
EVERYONE IN THIS ROOM WILL SOMEDAY BE DEAD by Emily R. Austin
Gilda, a twenty-something lesbian, cannot stop ruminating about death. Desperate for relief from her panicky mind and alienated from her repressive family, she responds to a flyer for free therapy at a local Catholic church, and finds herself  abruptly hired as a receptionist. Through all of this she finds a girlfriend. And it’s sweet and slow and lovely.
THE PROPHETS by Robert Jones Jr.
A novel about the forbidden union between two enslaved young men on a Deep South plantation. Isaiah was Samuel’s and Samuel was Isaiah’s. That was the way it was since the beginning, and the way it was to be until the end. Goes without saying, this is a sad story that will make you cry and will make you angry. But it is so so beautiful.
YOLK by Mary H.K.Choi
Jayne and June are two sisters living in New York after growing up in Texas. Jayne is struggling through fashion school, while her sister has a hot shot job in finance and a big apartment. They are sort-of estranged until June is diagnosed with cancer. The first love story in this book is between the sisters, but there is a budding romance for Jayne that is so sweet. This is a sweet book. I love it.
EARLY MORNING RISER by Katherine Heiny
Jane falls in love with Duncan easily. He is charming, good-natured, and handsome but unfortunately, he has also slept with nearly every woman in Boyne City, Michigan. A wise, bighearted, boundlessly joyful novel of love, disaster, and unconventional family. This feels like Gilmore Girls but better.
A TIP FOR THE HANGMAN by Allison Epstein
Christopher Marlowe, a brilliant aspiring playwright, is pulled into the duplicitous world of international espionage on behalf of Queen Elizabeth I. I also will never tire of recommending this novel about stupid Kit Marlowe becoming a spy while crushing hard on his best friend. It’s just so fun and so good.
THE BAD MUSLIM DISCOUNT by Syed M. Masood
It is 1995, and Anvar Faris is a restless, rebellious Pakistani boy whose family moves to start life over in California. At the same time, Safwa, a young girl suffocating in war-torn Baghdad with her grief-stricken, conservative father will find a very different and far more dangerous path to America. The fates of two remarkably different people intertwine and set off a series of events. It’s very good, the characters are great and the relationship is very realistic.
THE STORIED LIFE OF A.J. FIKRY by Gabrielle Zevin
A. J. Fikry is cynical but lovable. His wife has died and his bookstore is experiencing the worst sales in its history. Slowly but surely, he is isolating himself from all the people of Alice Island. But there’s Amelia, the lovely and idealistic (if eccentric) Knightley Press sales rep who keeps on taking the ferry over to Alice Island. Such a lovely book. Lovely and heatwarming with amazing characters and unpredictable plot.
WRITERS & LOVERS by Lily King
Blindsided by her mother's sudden death, and wrecked by a recent love affair, Casey Peabody has arrived in Massachusetts in the summer of 1997 without a plan. She waits tables in Harvard Square and rents a tiny, moldy room at the side of a garage where she works on the novel she's been writing for six years. When she falls for two very different men at the same time, her world fractures even more. Again this is just a lovely book. About love and grief and being lost.
AN AMERICAN MARRIAGE by Tayari Jones
Newlyweds Celestial and Roy are the embodiment of both the American Dream and the New South. He is a young executive, and she is an artist. But as they settle into the routine of their life together, they are ripped apart by circumstances. Roy is arrested and sentenced to twelve years for a crime Celestial knows he didn’t commit. BEAUTIFUL. Just masterful work. Will make you cry like a baby.
THE SONG OF ACHILLES by Madeline Miller
Achilles, "the best of all the Greeks," son of the cruel sea goddess Thetis and the legendary king Peleus, is strong and beautiful. Patroclus is an awkward young prince, exiled from his homeland. Brought together by chance, they forge an inseparable bond, despite risking the gods' wrath. I mean I like this. It’s poetic and romantic and it’s a classic story. Had to make the list...
TOM LAKE by Ann Patchett
Set during the pandemic when the main character and her three daughters are quarantining in their farm. The daughters get their mum to tell them the story of how she fell for and dated a famous actor while putting on a play in her 20s. VERY SWEET AND SPECIAL and also ann patchett can do no wrong!!!!
SIRENS & MUSES by Antonia Angress
The story of two very different girls who meet in art school. Lots going on in this book but it's all very poetic and interesting and the two main characters go through a lot but also like each other a lot.
IN MEMORIAM by Alice Winn
About two boys who meet in boarding school and then join war world I. It is insanely sad and it's a book about the war and about young people meeting terrible fates, but very romantic and they keep sending letters that are heartbreaking and they really love each other.
THE LATE AMERICANS by Brandon Taylor
About a group of friends and acquaintances who are all young and fucked up and all in different weird relationships but it's very interesting and Brandon Taylor also can do no wrong!!!!
TIN MAN by Sarah Winman
About two boys who meet in their youth and fall in love but then suddenly there's a time jump and it's been years and one of them is married to somebody else and the other one is nowhere to be found. Sad but also very special and definitely a book that is all about love.
LESS by Andrew Sean Greer
Pulitzer prize winning book about a novelist who receives an invitation to his ex boyfriend's wedding and is heartbroken so, suddenly, he finds himself coping by going on a world tour. It's funny and sweet and has a happy ending.

1878 – Henry Davis Sleeper (d.1934) was an American antiquarian, collector, and interior decorator best known for Beauport, his Gloucester, Massachusetts, country home that is "one of the most widely published houses of the twentieth century."
Henry Davis Sleeper was born in Boston. He was grandson of Jacob Sleeper, one of the founders of Boston University as well as a clothier and manager of a real estate trust.
Henry's education appears to have been by private tutors due to ill health as a child, and it is unclear as to whether he was ever formally educated.
Sleeper was introduced to the Eastern Point in Gloucester, Massachusetts, in the spring of 1906 by the Harvard economist A. Piatt Andrew, who later served in the U.S. House of Representatives, who had built a handsome summer mansion, Red Roof, on a rock ledge above the harbor.
Sleeper was much taken by the location and immediately decided to build a little further along the ledge from Red Roof. He purchased the land on Eastern Point in Gloucester on August 13, 1907.In the fall of 1907, construction of Beauport, Sleeper's relatively modestly scaled Arts and Crafts-style house, began and was sufficiently finished to receive A. Piatt Andrew as a house guest in May 1908. As property flanking Sleeper's became available, Beauport was expanded several times until 1925, often in response to events or important experiences in his life.
In 1918, Sleeper became the U.S. Representative of, and a major fundraiser for, the American Field Service, an ambulance corps founded by A. Piatt Andrew early in World War I. While Andrew served in the battle zones, Sleeper crisscrossed the Atlantic with supplies and funds, and worked closely with the French military. France awarded him the Croix de Guerre and the Legion of Honor.
Sleeper had never married and left no direct descendants. His relationship with Andrew, also a lifelong bachelor, was intense, and may have been a sexual one as well.
Sleeper died in Massachusetts General Hospital of leukemia on September 22, 1934, and is buried in his family's plot in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Watertown and Cambridge, Massachusetts. Andrew wrote the memorial tribute published in the Gloucester Daily Times.
Beauport House was declared a National Historic Landmark in 2003. In 2008, due to new information on Sleeper's life emerging, the decision was made to acknowledge his homosexuality in tour guides of Beauport, "not to define Sleeper but to contextualize him."

Portrait of de Maistre by Jean Shepeard
1894 – Roy de Maistre CBE (d.1968) was an Australian artist of international fame. He is famous in Australian art for his early experimentation in "colour-music", and is recognized as the first Australian artist to use pure abstractionism. His later works were painted in a figurative style generally influenced by Cubism. His 'Stations of the Cross' series hangs in Westminster Cathedral and works of his are hung in the Tate Gallery, London and in the Art Gallery of New South Wales. He was very close friends with the Australian writer Patrick White.
From his family's very prominent position in Australian society, he helped to make modern art fashionable in Sydney in the late 1920s, or at least as fashionable as it could be., but the anti-modernist criticism he received following his first one-man exhibition in Sydney convinced him that his art could not flourish in Australia.

The Footballers
In March 1930 he left Australia to live permanently in London. He held one-man shows at the Beaux-Arts Gallery, London (1930); in the studio of his colleague Francis Bacon (1930); at Bernheim Jeune, Paris (1932); Mayor Gallery, London (1934); and at Calmann Gallery, London (1938).
In 1936 de Maistre met the 18 years younger novelist Patrick White. The two men never became lovers, but firm friends. In Patrick White's own words "He became what I most needed, an intellectual and aesthetic mentor". They had many similarities. They were both homosexual; they both felt like outsiders in their own families (for example de Maistre's family disapproved of his painting and described it as 'horrible'); as a result they both had ambivalent feelings about their families and backgrounds, yet both maintained close and life-long links with their families, particularly their mothers. They also both appreciated the benefits of social standing and connections; and Christian symbolism and biblical themes are common in both artists' work.

de Maistre's portrait of Patrick White
Patrick White dedicated his first novel Happy Valley (1939) to de Maistre, and acknowledged de Maistre's influence on his writing. He even went to St Jean de Luz during the writing of the novel under encouragement from de Maistre. In 1947 de Maistre's painting Figure in a Garden (The Aunt) was used as the cover for the first edition of Patrick White's The Aunt's Story. Patrick White also bought many of de Maistre's paintings for himself. In 1974 Patrick White gave all his paintings by de Maistre to the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
In 1940 de Maistre started work for the French Section, Joint War Organization of the British Red Cross Society and the Order of St John, London. In 1942 he was posted to Foreign Relations Department, British Red Cross Society. During this time de Maistre scarcely painted. After World War II, however, he had become an artist of the establishment. He had no trouble selling his paintings, and continuing to accept private commissions for society portraits. He died in 1968 in London.

Denton Welch: Self-portrait
1915 – Maurice Denton Welch was an English writer and painter, admired for his vivid prose and precise descriptions.(d.1948)
Welch was born in Shanghai and spent his childhood in China — he recorded this in his fictionalised autobiography of his early years, Maiden Voyage (1935). With the help and patronage of Edith Sitwell and John Lehmann this became a small but lasting success and made his reputation. It was followed by the novel In Youth is Pleasure (1943), a study of adolescence, and by Brave and Cruel (1949). An unfinished autobiographical novel A Voice through a Cloud was published posthumously in 1950.
Welch did not set out to be a writer. He originally studied art in London with the intention of becoming a painter. At the age of 20, he was hit by a car while cycling in Surrey and suffered a fractured spine. Although he was not paralysed, he suffered severe pain and complications, including spinal tuberculosis that ultimately led to his early death.
He met his companion, Eric Oliver, in November 1943 while he was convalescing. Oliver was a farm-worker living in Maidstone, and was a regular visitor. He acted as nurse for Welch, then his secretary, and finally as his literary executor when Welch died at the age of 33.
His literary work, intense and introverted, includes insightful portraits of his friends. He continued occasionally to paint; there is a fine self-portrait (in the National Portrait Gallery), and some line illustrations in the first editions of his books.
What is clear from Welch's writing is that his chief limitation is also his chief virtue: his focus on himself. For his time and place, Welch's novels are surprisingly suffused with homosexuality. His examination of the people around him, very thinly disguised in the novels, and his exploration of his own homosexual feelings and responses to the world show Welch to be a writer of consequence, if an over-looked one.
William S Burroughs cited Denton Welch as the writer who most influenced his own work, and dedicated his novel The Place of Dead Roads to Welch.
It may be that his most lasting work will be his posthumously published Journals, in which he is frank about his homosexuality.

1943 – The Netherlands: A group of resistance activists led by Willem Arondeus, a gay man, dress as German soldiers, infiltrate the citizen registration building, and destroy it, hindering the Nazi German effort to identify Dutch Jews. The attack inspires similar ones throughout The Netherlands. Arondeus was a Dutch artist and author who joined the Dutch anti-Nazi resistance movement during World War II. Arondeus was caught and executed soon after his arrest. He was openly gay before the war and defiantly asserted his sexuality before his execution. His final words were "Let it be known that homosexuals are not cowards".

We also have a responsibility to end this suicide epidemic."

For some the “weddings” was what made them believe it was PR.🤣
Mostly because of the information that was coming in real-time when they were supposed to be happening from people that were supposed to have signed NDAs, around the same time projects for both of them were coming out I may have to mention, followed by all the articles promoting the ceremonies that keep happening even now almost every month like someone it's afraid we would forget. Which is kinda funny and desperate in my opinion because those articles are not always tied to them doing something like for example RDJ's wife mentioning how “he was mentoring during his wedding” after over 10 years of working with him. Like really? That's the best example you can think of. 🤣🤣🤣
Also, the mystery of where the first “ceremony” was supposed to happen that not even his “go-to” magazine seemed to know.
But I guess that helps to get people attention that seem to be the ultimate goal.
All of it is too sloppy to be just PR.
There doesn't seem to be much love or real need for privacy to be completely real so we are stuck in limbo until someone breaks…
Yeah, the super secret, super private, NDA-proved wedding wasn't that big of a secret after all. As you said, it's funny to think that the first article via Page 6 came out the day after the wedding. The "source" didn't wait a single minute. And the People article wave was even funnier. We got newer articles every single day for almost a week. Talking about the wedding, their relationship, and whatever they were able to come up with. What a low-key couple, right? My opinion is that those articles came from their teams, which leaves the question of why selling this whole "we are so happy and in love" thing is so important. It's a super secret, NDA-proved wedding, but Hemsworth was casually telling random people that they were there for Evan's wedding. RDJ's wife wasn't holding it back either, and it's so believeable that in the past 10+ years, RDJ hasn't "mentored" him for something else or even more important.
The whole location thing is a joke. Page 6 wrote, "The couple said “I do” Saturday in an intimate ceremony that took place in Massachusetts at their Boston-area home," and then People wrote (mentioning that "The New York Post's Page Six was first to report the news") that "The actor, 42, wed Alba Baptista during a ceremony at a private estate in Cape Cod, Mass., on Saturday, a source tells PEOPLE." Neither of those articles mentioned that the party and the ceremony were at two different locations, and both of those pages talk about the ceremony. So where was the ceremony then? Because the two outlets wrote about entirely two different locations, and the fact that People mentioned that Page Six was the first to report yet their "source" said a completely different thing is funny. I wouldn't assume the source didn't know where they were. Then People obviously tried to save what they could and published another article where they wrote, "Chris Evans and his new bride Alba Baptista partied at his Boston-area home to celebrate their marriage" and that "the wedding weekend also included a gathering at a private estate in Cape Cod, sources confirmed to PEOPLE." So what happened and where then? Because the story doesn't really make sense. Just like anything else in this whole thing. I guess their love is so strong that even the source(s) got high on it and couldn't tell where or what was happening.
To me, the sloppiness is one of the reasons why I think this is PR. There wouldn't be this many inconsistencies if this were a legit thing. They wouldn't need to prove anything, they wouldn't need to publish this many articles about the wedding or their relationship, and they wouldn't need to keep filling in the whole mess their sloppiness caused.

"this apartment has a gorgeous view of the charles," the real estate agent says, while the camera crew very deliberately avoids all windows. an establishing shot of the skyline cannot make the pacific northwest look like new england. doesn't matter how many irish pubs you shove in there. this is not my beautiful city etc etc

Picking Up the Pieces
Here is another series I decided to start. Let me know what you think! I do have a few original characters and they will be named but this is a reader insert fic. The reader will not be names and I do not do Y/N, I was never a fan of those personally, but I did want y’all to know how this would be and how any of my fics will be if you decide to read them. I’ll be posting Part 3 of my other series later as well!
********
Warnings: talk of car accident, death, miscarriage
You looked around as you made your way down the street. Your pitbull Diesel sniffed around at the new place he was. You couldn’t believe your luck. You had always wanted to move out toward Boston but not quite in the city. When your real estate agent found a small house in Sudbury you knew immediately this was where you were meant to be. After everything that has happened to you in the last year, you needed a fresh start and this was it. You smiled as you walked through the quaint town. It was a crisp fall day and the leaves were changing colors. You thought it was poetic for your situation. Fall is a season of change and this was the exact change you needed.
You smiled as you passed a couple walking their dog. Diesel started wagging his tail but they looked at him and crossed the street. You sighed looking at him. Bless his heart. He didn’t understand why no one wanted to pet him or play with him. You scratched the back of his ears.
“It’s okay, buddy. They don’t know what they’re missing.” He wagged his tail happily at you while the two of you went on your way. You met another lady walking her dog as well. You gave her a soft smile and she gave you one back. She stopped a few feet in front of you.
“I know this might seem cliche, but is your dog friendly? I always ask before I let Dodger near another one.”
“No worries and yes, Diesel is friendly.” She made her way closer to you. Diesel and Dodger sniffed each other and started wagging their tails. You smiled. You were so glad this woman decided to give him a chance.
“I didn’t want to sound prejudiced, he didn’t look mean.”
“It’s fine. People usually cross the street or freeze when they see him. He’s the best dog I’ve ever had though.”
“I’m Lisa, by the way. I don’t think I’ve seen you around here before and you don’t sound like you’re from around here either.” You introduced yourself as well.
“I’m not, I just moved here from Kentucky actually.”
“Welcome to the neighborhood. Your accent gave you away.” You couldn’t help but laugh.
“I’m not surprised, it usually does.” The two of you stood there for a while watching Diesel and Dodger run back and forth for a bit. She asked you which house you moved into and it turned out to be the one right across the street from her.
“Would you like some company on the walk back? These two seem like they’re gonna be great friends.”
“I would love that, thank you Lisa.” The two of you headed back towards your houses. Diesel and Dodger played with each other the entire way back.
“What made you want to move out this way.” Your heart sank a little at the question.
“That’s a pretty long story, but the short version is I needed a new start and I always wanted to move out this way. The stars just seemed to align and here I am.” You didn’t want to dump your baggage on this sweet woman. She was just too kind.
“Well, I’m glad your new start is here in Sudbury. There isn’t a place like it.” You believed her. The second you moved here it felt as if you had been here your entire life. The two of you exchanged numbers so Diesel and Dodger could have a playdate soon. You walked in letting Diesel off his leash. You looked around your house and smiled. This was the exact start you needed.
~
A few days later you were baking some cookies when there was a weird sound at your door. Diesel looked at you to see what was going on. The two of you made your way to the door. You opened the door and saw Dodger in front of your screen door. You opened it and he made his way inside.
“What are you doing here, Dodger? Did you get out?” You looked across the street to see the lights off at Lisa’s. Just to make sure she wasn’t home you put both dogs inside and made your way across the street. You knocked on the door waiting for an answer. You didn’t hear any noise on the other side of the door. You knocked one more time and still no answer. You made your way back over to your house and called Lisa’s cell.
“Hello, dear. Are you okay?”
“Yes, I’m fine. You’re not home are you?”
“No, I’m at the airport picking my son up. Did you need something?”
“No, I was just making sure. Dodger got out, but he’s at my house. I just wanted to let you know where he was and that he was okay.”
“Thank you, dear! Oh I don’t know how he got out. You don’t mind keeping him until I get back do you?”
“Not at all. He and Diesel are running around playing right now.” You laughed as they chased each other around your coffee table. The two of you talked for a few more minutes while she waited for the plane to land. You said your goodbyes after it landed. You turned around to see both dogs curled around each other asleep on your loveseat. You laughed and decided to feed them when they woke up. The timer went off for your cookies. You smiled as you heard paws hit the floor. You sat the hot tray on top of the oven.
“Those are not for you two. However, I do believe it’s time to eat and then go on a walk, how does that sound?” Both dogs barked at you excitedly about the idea of a walk. You got your other dog bowl out and filled both up so both dogs could eat. You got the cookies off the baking sheet and put some more dough on it and put it back in the oven. When the dogs finished eating you got them ready for a walk. When the timer went off for your last batch of cookies you sat them on top of the oven and let them cool while you took the dogs for a walk.
~
You were halfway back to your house when you heard a car horn and your name being called. You turned to see Lisa. You smiled as she rolled her window down.
“You didn’t have to walk him, dear.”
“I don’t mind at all. I also fed him when I fed Diesel, so he’s already done his business and by the looks of it is ready for a nap.” You laughed as you looked at the tired dogs. Lisa laughed with you.
“Looks like it. Would you like a ride the rest of the way?”
“That’s okay, if Diesel doesn’t finish his walk he’ll have the zoomies for an hour tonight. I can put Dodger in if you want though.”
“Sounds good. I know he’s missed Chris.” She looked over to the person in the car with her. You would be lying if you said your heart didn’t skip a beat at how handsome he was. He leaned across the middle console.
“Hey, Dodge! Did you miss me?” Dodger started barking and going in circles. You laughed as you led him to the car. Lisa unlocked the car doors and you opened the back so Dodger could hop inside. Dodger was immediately in Chris’s lap.
“Thank you again for keeping him.”
“I don’t mind at all.”
“Why don’t you come over for dinner tonight, as a thank you.”
“I couldn’t impose.”
“I insist. Dinner will be ready at seven.” You just nodded at her. She drove on up to her house as you finished your walk with Diesel.
~
Later that night you headed over to Lisa with a plate of cookies in tow. You knocked on the door and waited. The door opened and your heart stopped again as you realized it was Chris that opened the door. Your heart needed to quit doing that. You didn’t need to go there. Not again. Dodger ran to you distracting you from your thoughts. You gave him some scratches on the head and smiled at him. You didn’t see it but Chris gave you a small smile watching you with Dodger.
“Right on time. You didn’t have to bring anything.” He nodded at the plate in your hand.
“I was raised to never show up empty handed.” He gave you a bright smile taking the plate from you.
“Where are you from? You don’t sound like you’re from around here.” You laughed at his question.
“Like I told Lisa, it usually does. I’m from Kentucky. I’ve only been here a couple of weeks.”
“Ahh, that explains the accent. What made you move here?”
“Needed a fresh start and this seemed like the right place.”
“This place is pretty great. I miss it when I’m away.”
“Do you travel a lot?” He gave you a quizzical look. As the two of you made your way further into the house.
“Yeah, do you know who I am?” You were confused.
“I’m sorry, but should I ? Have we met before?” He shook his head. He gave you a small smile and led you into the kitchen.
“Sorry, no, we’ve never met before. Um, that sounded terrible. I just assumed you knew who I was. Most people do.”
“I’m sorry, I don’t.” Chris sat the cookies on the counter as Lisa turned to you. She looked at the plate Chris sat on the counter. Lisa ushered you to sit at the table as she brought the lasagna over and sat it down. “Lisa, this looks wonderful.” She sat down and so did Chris. Dodger made his way over to you laying down at your feet. You bent down and gave him a couple of scratches behind the ears. Lisa and Chris started filling up your plate for you and then theirs. They were so kind and you appreciated that with people you just met. After you all had food on your plate you started eating.
“So, what made you move out here? I know you said you needed a fresh start, but why the big move?” You looked to Chris as he asked his questions.
“It’s a long story and pretty sad. I don’t think it would make for a great dinner conversation.”
“We don’t mind, dear, but if you don’t want to talk about it that’s fine, too.” You gave Lisa a small smile. You didn’t want to bring their moods down, so you opted not to talk about it. Sensing that Lisa changed the subject. The three of you talked about a lot of different things. They asked you what it was like growing up in Kentucky, what your favorite thing was and what you missed the most. Conversation flowed easily and you were grateful. Once everyone was finished with their plates Chris started clearing the table. You stood up to help.
“I can get this.”
“I don’t mind. It’s the least I could do since you had me for dinner.” He relented and you helped him take everything to the kitchen. You helped put the leftovers up and insisted you wash the dishes. Chris relented as long as he could dry. The two of you stood there in silence for a while. It wasn’t awkward, but it was comfortable.
“So, what do you do for a living? Since you thought I would know you?” You asked after a while. Chris laughed at your question.
“I’m an actor.” Your heart stopped.
“Really?”
“Yes, I’ve been in quite a few movies. It’s been so long since someone hasn’t recognized me that it caught me off guard when you didn’t.”
“I can see that. I don’t watch movies that much. I mostly read.”
“What do you read?”
“Anything. Romance, thriller, horror, you name it, I read it.” You laughed and he laughed with you. “What kind of movies are you in?”
“A little of everything. Most recently it’s been Marvel movies. I play Captain America.”
“Oh! Like the comics?” Chris nodded. “I read the comics when I was younger. I knew they made movies about them. I’ve just never watched them.”
“Would you like to go get some coffee after we’re finished? I know a nice little spot.” There is no way this handsome man, let alone an actor, was asking you out for coffee. You started to panic a little. You said you wouldn’t do this again. Never again.
“I don’t know.”
“We don’t have to jump into anything. It’s just a neighbor asking a neighbor for coffee. What do you say?” You looked over at him and you could tell he meant it.
“Okay, but I need to let Diesel out first.”
“Okay.”
~
Chris came over to get you after you let Diesel out. The two of you drove about ten minutes down the road to a little coffee shop. He drove around to the back door. There someone let you in. You assumed as to not disturb the crowd that was already there. They led you to a secluded room in the back. The two of you ordered your coffees.
“You can say no to this and I won’t ask again.” You nodded for him to continue. “But what led you here? Why did you need a fresh start?”
“It’s a sad story, are you sure you want to hear it?”
“Not if you don’t want to talk about it, but I would love to know more about you.” You took a deep breath and nodded.
“Well, to start. I was married. His name was Jake.” You smiled thinking about your husband. “About a year and a half ago we bought a house with our dogs and we were ready to start a family. We had actually just found out I was pregnant and we were coming from the doctor’s office after they confirmed it. We were so excited.” You started to tear up. You grabbed a napkin off the table and dabbed your eyes. “On the way home we were hit by a drunk driver.” You took a deep breath and stilled yourself for the next part. “Jake died on impact and I lost the baby a few days later.” Chris reached across the table putting his hand on yours.
“I’m so sorry you had to go through that. Did you have your parents or his?” You shook your head.
“No, I lost my parents the same way not long after Jake and I got married. His parents wrote us off when we got engaged so now it’s just me and Diesel. After Jake died a lawyer showed up and it turned out he had been investing since before we got engaged. He made sure I was taken care of and that’s how I ended up here.”
“So you said you had two dogs. What happened to your other dog?”
“She was old. I had to put her down right before I moved out here. Her name was Abby.”
“Wow, you’ve been through so much. You’re a strong woman.” The waitress brought your coffee. You both thanked her. “I’m sorry you had to go through all of that. I am glad you ended up in Sudbury, I’m just sorry about the circumstances.”
“I’m glad I’m here too.” You gave him a small smile. The smile he gave you back was blinding. You said you would never date again, but there was something about Chris. You weren’t about to jump into anything obviously, but you still weren’t sure. Maybe, just maybe this man would wiggle his way into your heart.

˓⠀⠀﹪ :⠀⠀٬⠀⠀IVYRED.⠀⠀⸻⠀⠀is a fictional four-member girl group under kayak72 consisting of NAVA, SAANVI, MALEKA, and NERIAH. debuting on october 26, 2017, ivyred has largely been credited for reviving their label into vibrancy after their senior brother group, DIEM, saved them from bankruptcy.
based in new york city, the group was scouted by kayak72's creative director, romina richetti through a talent search looking for self-producing female artists throughout major cities around the world. though the group initially began with five scouted members, the fifth member, DANA, would be pulled out of the group by her parents who had previously been told she would be placed in a duo with her older brother DAX.
the group has often drawn parallels between themselves and diem. it is rumored that the members of the two groups do not get along and often are not present in the same rooms. seemingly fueling the fire, members avoni and neriah have been noted saying the diem boys were, "overgrown frat boys", following the scandal that alleged a member had offended the recording academy. unlike their counterparts, however, ivyred has drawn mass appeal, frequently selling out stadiums and even winning a grammy of their own for their album HONEY IN 2021.
