I technically finished this last night but I was sleepy so I didn't post it

It's Nightmare!!

Oki, time to ramble about his backstory

So firstly, the twins don't guard a big tree

If they did, Adam and Eve wouldn't have been sent to Earth /j

Instead, their domains encircle Nim's resting place

She kinda just made two gods and then went to take the world's longest nap

Mortals can't go to the God's Realm (before death) so they don't gotta worry about that

They don't gotta worry about anything, actually

Nightmare's just paranoid and Dream does whatever he can to make him feel better

He's been paranoid since before the incident

He's the God of Fear and he believes that's enough reason for the other gods to want to plot against him

On bad days, he finds it difficult to trust Dream too

Only Killer (I still have no idea what to do with him, I just have a vague design) and Crescent get a pass, mostly because he thinks they're too weak to succeed if they really tried to kill him

When he was younger, he was slightly obsessed with his appearance

He kinda believed that if he looked presentable, other people would like him more

However, because of his paranoia, he still felt like the other gods were out to get him

This meant he tended to cause conflicts sometimes

Even though he believed it was in self-defence, he was usually the one initiating the fights

And one time, he made the mistake of messing with the God of Destruction

He lost

Very badly

Error was going easy on him, but his version of easy is very skewed

He took a hit to his right eye socket, which allowed his aura to begin leaking out of his body

He spent a while hiding, during which Dream was freaking out trying to find his brother

Eventually, Nightmare regained enough sense to go to Dream for help

However, by then, his aura had stained his bones and clothes, making them appear darker

It freaked out Dream even if he didn't say anything while he did his best to tend to his brother's injuries

Nowadays, Nightmare doesn't care much about his appearance

He is still paranoid though and doesn't want his weakness to be used against him so he uses his abilities to hide his injury

It's still there, you just can't see it

Also, Crescent doesn't know it exists

Since he spent so much time with him, Nightmare's aura stained his son's bones too, making them grey instead of white

The only reason that Crescent still has those stripes and the crescent shape on his forehead is because that's his magic manifesting onto his body and you can't stain magic without getting LV

Think of it like Ink's tattoos

The mug was a gift from Crescent

He kind of manifested it by using the magic in Nightmare's domain and then painting onto it

He practiced lots before giving the best one to his dad

Nightmare loves it and even though he doesn't need food/water, he fills it with lots of drinks so that he can stare at the drawing on the back

Also, he thinks that using it more often will make Crescent love him more, but he's being silly because Crescent loves him anyway

As one can imagine, Crescent going to the Mortal Realm is freaking him out

He has no idea why he'd go down there, especially when there's a prophecy that literally dictates he's going to interact with "a great evil"

...Not that Nightmare's told him about the prophecy

Nightmare has thrown hands with other gods multiple times for insulting his son because of this prophecy

He also would have done the same to Sci for revealing it in the first place, but Sci knew where to hide

Most of the gods fear Crescent as much as they fear Nightmare

Also, he has resting bitch face so sometimes he and someone else are staring at each other and both freaking out

I've never done a reference sheet before so idk if I did this right but I do like how it turned out

Okay, now I'm gonna ramble about him so if you don't want spoilers for the fic, you may instead focus intensely on the rendered bit on the left and ignore the rest as well as the stuff under the read more :3

So the lantern glows blue because it's fueled by his magic rather than oil or something like that

Anyone who goes to the mortal realm gets one and it basically lights the path to the task they need to complete down there (Crescent doesn't have a real task tho so it's just a funny light)

Yes, he is wearing cloud pajamas, people tend to headcanon Nightmare's realm as eternally nighttime so that means you get to wear pajamas all the time when you're a demi-god living in his realm like Crescent

This is a medieval fantasy world, but the gates to the mortal realm are partially controlled by the God of Time and so the Gods get stuff from all periods because I fucked up when making Crescent's sheet and forgot to do research Fresh exists to be a menace

The outside of the cloak is fairly plain because the God of Fear is ironically paranoid and stealth is a must, however the galaxies on the inside of the cloak are real stars from Nightmare's realm and they move like a real night sky does (or they would, if I could animate that well)

Nightmare just kinda went "Lemme just pull some stars out of the sky for you" and turned it into a cloak for his son when he was sad one time and now it's Crescent's favourite :)

I spent like.... an hour trying to figure out how to make the stars before giving up and using this image from unsplash, which lets you use images for free. IbisPaint doesn't have many star brushes, unfortunately :(

Cross is there too, though I don't got his design fully fleshed out yet so take the silly little sketch of him

Even though the text is the same for their thoughts, they don't speak the same language

(It's only English for you guys)

Crescent only knows how to speak the Gods' language (which I'm gonna say is now Minecraft Enchantment Table lol) cuz that's what he was raised to speak (and to fuck with you guys <3) and Cross would be using Wingdings

Of course, when it's their perspective, it'll be regular letters for them and those fonts for the other so you get the full experience of a language barrier >:)

Cross wants to pay back Crescent by serving him after he saved his life but Crescent just wants a friend so he never asks for anything and that makes Cross a bit upset lol

He likes helping and can't convey that

Crescent wouldn't mind help tho but he kind of thinks Cross needs to rest after almost dying but he can't convey that either

They want to communicate but they can't lol

Oh! Oh! Oh!

I almost forgot!

Crescent can't travel during the day because his father's realm is the night and Dream unintentionally sends his aura across miles during the day

He wants to be the cool uncle but his aura is very overbearing, especially for a small demi-god :(

Crescent just pulls up his hood and pretends to sleep instead

Cross keeps guard :)

He does think Crescent is a God and that he's probably capable of watching his own back but he likes doing it anyway

Fun fact, Nightmare, God of Fear is extremely paranoid

He is known for randomly starting fights with other gods because he was certain they were plotting against him

And yeah, this is what happened between him and Dream

Surely, his reaction to Crescent going missing will bring no harm to certain gods (Lust, Outer, TK, Sci)

Nightmare: ...You must have heard that term from my son. He refuses to call them by what they are. They are shadows, not 'shadow things.' It's a very important distinction. Within my realm, they may come to life and do my bidding. Or Crescent will play games with them-

Nightmare: Hang on, if you're not a shadow, what the hell are you?!

I'm really tired and I like

Haven't slept in two days

And then I realized I missed the twins' birthday

So I'm gonna hand you this sketch and then some optional lore for you

Many believe that the God of Fear and God of Joy are eternal enemies

And while they do fight whenever they cross paths, this could not be further from the truth

For it is Joy who was the first to learn of his brother's injury and the one who hid him when he was at his weakest

It was Joy who was the first to learn of the Child of the Moon, aside from the Knowledge but he doesn't count

And it was Fear who told his brother himself, though Chaos still believes he is the one who told Joy first

Dream is the uncle who showed up in a suit to "make a good impression"

Dream and Nightmare are the two siblings who seem like they genuinely hate each other, but would help the other hide a body, no questions asked

The only reason they have separate realms is because their auras hurt each other

But there are times they're willing to tolerate that for long periods of that, and one of those times was Crescent's birth

I have yet to decide what happened to Killer, but as soon as the baby was born, Nightmare yoinked him and went to show him off to his brother

Dream took one look at Crescent and went "Wait, I'm not ready yet" and then he left and got dressed XD

Nightmare: Now, I would love to give you life advice, however, my son has missed out on dinner and I must retrieve him. Normally, I'd let him keep playing but alas, he is half-mortal. I would greatly prefer he not starve to death
