2022 movie of the week: masterlist
if you’ve known me for any time at all, you should know by now that i will not watch very many movies this year. i’ll aspire to, i’ll think it’s a good idea, but it’s just not that likely to happen. however, that shouldn’t stop me from the fun of trying! and this year i’m aiming for a slightly different type of goal.
my plan is to watch one movie a week. if i happen to watch more than that, great, but it’'ll be a bonus and won’t count for a following week. i’ll review my weekly movie same as i review all the movies i watch, and check them off my watchlist as i go. (my watchlist just gets longer every year. maybe 2022 is the year i finally make a dent!)

Other Signs of Heart Attack in Women:
1. She splits at the hip like a babushka doll—suffocating husk of every sister self inside: daughter of the daughter of how many women made her spilling empty guts; behind each woman a great woman and so on, breathing dust in the lungs of sunlight. She wills herself solid, or full of something not already vessel to another restless air. 2. A winded creature stalks her sawgrass voice beyond the force of naming—none fathom her rites nor fan her rage beneath the shade of tall palms. Thundering at evenstar where shoreline razes gold in wet horizon all her hidden verticality, she scoops a mountain out of sky and crowns herself high priestess of the floodplain. 3. There is no blood on her hands. There is blood on her teeth and in other places but there is none on her hands. She tracks her shoulders drawing back as from a third person—mirror-eyes see other arms smear menses at the mausoleum door and make some favourable comparison to fruit or flowers: a meatless rib and the knives of her station. She covers her mouth when she coughs. There is no blood on her hands. It is not for lack of bleeding. 4. She sleeps in coal and rises ashen; waking mare-trod, hag-beridden, she brings up grave goods: bog-preserved garroted bodies; Lindow Woman, other grim statistics (if a victim, her attacker is well known to her). She carries sacred tools inside a coffin—torch and shovel for some queen-of-queens or underworld goddess: of the slain; of the drowned; of the burned; (Other Signs of Heart Attack in Women:). Claims to ride a cloud with Joan of Arc and Freya’s Valkyries; proposes blue-faced Hel to be the better half of wormshit (neck, jaw, shoulder, upper back or stomach pain; pain in one or both arms; trouble breathing; indigestion; nausea or vomiting; sweating; dizziness; fatigue; …). 5. She is thrust again into a body of these other bodies; grain runs down the clouded hourglass of night and through her fingers and she beats herself up for the mess it leaves the floor. But she will no more be a house—every door flings open down the hallway of her closed eyes, disgorging fire all eight corners of the sky. Feels the crackling breeze of heaven shudder in her shoulders, ring her spine with shivers of impending doom—that cliché dream again: the angel with the bell and blood-soaked wings. She falls into the void—and even here, there is the blackest wall; she cannot see a space without them. 6. She hacks her way through hedgerow where the fiddles play, and there remains a while. No garden maze will hide the chalice she has crossed this desert for: once, it was an ocean of saltwater; once, that hollow hunger. Here, at last, the flood and now the lanterns call from that far shore—oh, sweetwater isn’t deep! the currents slow; we wait for you to cross. It is not her time to go. 7. The sickle moon waxes once again and ancient throats speak starlight from the boat of heaven. She folds her hands in clay and fears no death. It is not for lack of dying. * * * October 2020. The line "How many woman made you?" appears twice in 'The Chained Beast' (for Virginia Woolf, and others) from Tintype by Elizabeth Brady (Fiddlehead Poetry Books, 1977) The line “menses at the mausoleum door” is inspired by Lorde’s comments on writing about adolescence in A NOTE FROM THE DESK OF A NEWBORN ADULT: I was 16 when most of us met. Can you believe it? I laugh thinking about that me now - that glossy idiot god, princess of her childhood streets, handmade and ugly and sure of herself. All my life I’ve been obsessed with adolescence, drunk on it. Even when I was little, I knew that teenagers sparkled. I knew they knew something children didn’t know, and adults ended up forgetting. Since 13 I’ve spent my life building this giant teenage museum, mausoleum maybe, dutifully wolfishly writing every moment down, and repeating it all back like folklore. And now there isn’t any more of it. Paragraph 6 is inspired by listening to every recording I could find of Sandy Denny’s ‘Like An Old Fashioned Waltz’ on repeat for like at least a week straight. Finally, thanks to @smakkabagms for the prompt: ‘I, Enheduanna’, and thanks to the earliest known poet to have signed her work.

Music of Our Lives - Chapter 1
Okay, Ladies and Gentlemen, we are about to go on an adventure together!! This is my first Long story, and I plan to update as often as I can, so we will see how this turns out for everyone involved. Enjoy!
First Day of High School… Wonder how I’m gonna screw this up.
Virgil approached the High School, nervous for what lay ahead of him. His parents promised him that they wouldn’t move again until after he had graduated, but he doubted that, prepared to leave in a couple months. As he made his way down the hall, Virgil checked his schedule.
1A-Concert Band                                 S146      Jason Mabrey 2A-Biology                                           E202       Frank Nosal 3A-CP English 9                                  W374     Jessica Fisher 4A-Intro to High School                       W260      Mike Preskorn 1B-World History/World Geography    W355      Hollie King 2B-Latin 1                                            W285     Julie Marshall 3B-Algebra 1                                        E120      Eric Haupert 4B-Intro to Photography                       E158      Karen Slusher
Virgil groaned upon remembering what his first class was. Earlier in the summer, his parents told him that they were going to have him take a performance elective, and they had him pick out an instrument, but that didn’t mean he had to enjoy band class. They had also decided that they wanted him to be in the band so badly that they would buy him whatever instrument he wanted, as long as he learned it over the summer.
So, naturally, Virgil decided on the least conspicuous instrument he could. One he could easily toss in his backpack and not worry about. He chose the piccolo. What he hadn’t thought of, however, was the high range of the small instrument. And the fact that he may be the only guy playing it. And the fact that he would most likely get a lot of solos.
As Virgil made his way to the band room, located in the basement of the school, he was worried about what he might find down those stairs. He pushed away the concerns as he took his first step into the band room.
The first thing he noticed was the chaos of all the students in that class warming up at the same time. He made his way to a seat near the flute section, after not seeing any other piccolos. This did not look good for him.
The second thing he noticed was the overall age of these students. Most looked like Freshman, but there were a few here and there that stood out as upperclassmen. One such upperclassman was currently taking charge of the clarinet section, getting them all in order and seated neatly. Another was talking to the Alto Saxes, giving them instructions about something Virgil couldn’t quite hear.
As the director made his way up to his small podium in the front of the room, Virgil quickly set up his piccolo and waited as the room quieted down. The Band director spoke with authority as he addressed the band.
“Good Morning Concert Band! For most of you, welcome to your Freshman year. First things First, I would like to introduce some people to all of you. These are the people to talk to if you need help, unless it’s serious, in which case, bring it to me. To begin, we have our Flute and Piccolo section leader, Danielle Stella, then we have our clarinet section leader, Logan Prince, and our alto sax section leader, Patton Hood, Low Reeds, Kimberly Hood, Trumpets, Damon Bernal, Trombones and Baritones, Maddie Smith, Tubas, Cody Blanchette, and Percussion, Nicole Brady.”
Virgil sighed lightly, leaning back in his chair and watching as each one waved at the class.
“Now, I want to see just what kind of instrumentation we have today. We are going to go in Score order. I want everyone to say their name, grade, and favorite song. We’ll start with Piccolos.”
Virgil sat up abruptly and stared wide-eyed as he said that. The director turned towards the flute section.
“Do we have any piccolo players?”
As the girl next to him pointed at Virgil, he panicked. What was he supposed to say? What if his voice cracked? What would everyone think of him? What- His thoughts were cut off when the girl next to him gently nudged his arm, smiling encouragingly. He took a deep breath and spoke just loud enough to be heard in the room as everyone went silent.
“My name is Virgil Sanders… I am a Freshman, and my favorite song is “I’m not Okay. (I Promise)” By My Chemical Romance.” He glanced around the room as everyone stared at him until Danielle spoke up as first for the flute section.
As he leaned back in his seat again, he watched the others around the room for a bit before moving to read a book on his music stand. It wasn’t until the voice of one person in the back cut through his thoughts that he looked up to see who it was.
“I Am Roman Prince. I Am Currently In My Freshman Year Of High School, And My Favorite Piece Of Music Is “All I Do Is Win”, By DJ Khaled.” Virgil scoffed slightly, figuring only the girl beside him could hear, but he could have sworn he saw Prince throw a pointed glare at him.
By the end of the class, Virgil was exhausted without even playing anything. This was largely due to the discovery that any freshmen in Band are required to join the marching band. Which started the next day. He made his way towards the door as everyone was packing up when Danielle ran over to him. “Virgil! I know you’re new to the area, so I was wondering if we could trade phone numbers... I-In case you have any questions, of course. And also to make sure you know when the marching band events are.” Virgil looked over at her, then nodded reluctantly, quickly scrawling down his phone number on a piece of paper.
“Just know that if I don’t know who it is, I block the number, so say your name when you text me. Also, don’t share that with anyone. I don’t want to be in any group chats, or be sent any chainmail texts, Okay?”
She nodded quickly, then walked off, leaving him alone to wait for the bell to ring, until... “Virgil?” He looked up, only to see that Roman was making his way towards him. “It is Virgil, right? I was wanting to talk to you. I saw your family moving in up the street from me at the end of last school year.”
“So?” Virgil replied, getting annoyed.
“Well if you let me finish, J.Delightful, I was getting to that. I was wondering if you needed any help finding your classes.”
Why would he want to help me?
Virgil shook his head. “No Thanks, Princey. I think I’ll find my way just fine.”  As the bell rang, he quickly left the band room, eager to get away from the crowd of musicians.
As the day went on, Virgil slowly became more and more annoyed with everything and everyone, eventually reaching his breaking point when he walked into his last class for the day, Intro to High School and saw Him. Virgil quickly sat as far away as possible from the flamboyant fantasist, then pulled his phone out to avoid being noticed by him.
By the end of the day, Virgil was ready to leave, heading straight for the busses until he felt a hand on his shoulder, making him turn around and slap off the hand, looking at who was behind him. “Apologies, Virgil.”
Virgil sighed. “What do you want, Princey?”
“Well, I saw you heading for the bus, and I was wondering if you’d like a ride home. I already cleared it with Logan, so he’s okay with taking you home. I know that the bus is very crowded, so I figured you would prefer to ride in a car and go straight home.”
He looked up at Roman, debating. He knew Roman was right. He despised the bus, but he also wasn’t sure why Roman would be offering to help him. Curiosity got the better of him and he nodded.
“That would be great, thank you.”
Roman smiled. “Awesome! Follow me.” As he walked off, Virgil stayed beside him, keeping pace with his long legs.
“Roman?”
Roman looked over, surprised. “Yeah, Virgil?”
“Why are you so determined to be nice to me? I understand being polite, but this is above and beyond... So, I guess what I’m trying to say is, What gives?”
“I want to help you because I used to be you. Back in 7th grade, my family had just moved here. They agreed that we wouldn’t move again until Logan had finished High School. He’s only got this year and next year left. I’m hoping they decide to let me finish as well, but Logan is their prize child. He gets the good grades and the Academic Honors. I’m just a Band and Theater kid, average at best. I could do theater and band anywhere. It’s harder to transfer academic success…”
Virgil watched as Roman’s face fell, and his façade faltered.
“I’m sorry for bringing it up... I was just curious... Most people usually don’t want to help me. I was just wondering if this was genuine, or-”
“-Another Trick.”
Roman smiled over at Virgil, who sheepishly grinned in return, happy to have found someone who understood him.
AN: Wow, this was a beast to tackle. Starting a story is always the most interesting part for me. Anyways, I will be taking Holiday AU/Prompts for the remainder of December, and I will write some of my own until I get suggestions. Let me know if there is something you want to see!

'30 coins', another host without consecration by Álex de la Iglesia
Tumblr media
VOD news brings you the best premieres of the week on Netflix, HBO, Amazon Prime Video … And for the third week in a row, we have a ‘Spanish’ on the cover, but not just any one and in no case derogatory: 30 coins, the latest from Álex of the Church in serial format. Otherwise, just a couple of outstanding content and, yes, the most interesting catalogs.
If it has been eight weeks since HBO that did not rise to the top of the section, and did so with the Spanish series Patria, it is doing it again now with another expected production of the country, worth the redundancy and the adjective, if you reside in these parts. We are talking about 30 coins, a series that you still cannot see … But be careful, because it is not the only thing that HBO brings for this week.
In fact, HBO arrives this week with the most powerful material of the big three of VOD… and it was about time. Of all, the highlight is undoubtedly 30 coins, the new series by Álex de la Iglesia, whose premiere is scheduled for tomorrow, so you’ll have to hold on a bit if you’re wanting to see the new of a director capable of combining the terms ‘Spanish’ – I repeat, without any derogatory connotation that is worth it- and ‘original’ in almost everything he touches, although the last qualifier goes back to his particular style. 30 coins is made up of a choral cast of which you will hear most of the faces and the story, of which I can tell you little about the obvious, it is inevitable that it does not recall a little of the magnificent The Day of the Beast due to the themes it touches . And honestly, as long as it is half as good as that one, we are going to really enjoy these 30 coins. For more information, the trailer.
Another striking HBO premiere for this week is The Flight Attendant, a series halfway between suspense and black humor that brings back Kaley Cuoco (The Big Bang Theory) in a title role. It tells the story of a flight attendant who gets froggy one night of passion… But what actually happened? Criticism is receiving it well.
And one more from HBO, this in movie format: Superintelligence, a comedy that revolves around an artificial ‘superintelligence’ crazier than usual.

Netflix follows his and releases numerous exclusive or original content, which are not always the same, but as usual there is a lot of straw or little grain, if not none.
Of everything that premieres on Netflix this week, maybe Christmas Chronicles 2 be the highlight for being the sequel to a movie that had its success a couple of years ago. The story, the typical Christmas with Santa Claus in the middle, this time with Chris Columbus at the helm, but with Kurt Russell again at the beard. Twelve Miles from the Border

by audaciousdean
Ask anyone in town who Dean Winchester is and they'll tell you that he’s the boy with leashed anger. He’s an enigma wrapped in an enigma wrapped in street racing, cheap whiskey and stale cigarettes. He’s got bruised skin and bloody knuckles, breathy whispers of dreams that would never be fulfilled and swollen lips. He’s a feral beast caged within that small town with a weakness for the only thing that he loved that could kill him. That thing was Sam Wesson.
If you were to ask the boy with the shaggy hair wearing khaki slacks and an oversized hoodie draping his bony limbs, being the abnormal in the town of normal, he would say that Dean Winchester was nothing more than a boy who was too stuck to move, believing that his destiny was written, not made.
It’s the story of darkened streets coated with burnt rubber. It’s the story of two boys who were so opposite of the norm, one the town outcast barely making ends meet and the other too smart for his own good. It’s the story of a taboo love and growing up too quick and falling just a little too far. It’s the story of pain and agony, of devotion and sacrifices. It’s the story of what you’re willing to give up just to keep your head above water.

Theresa May told to go as ministers plot to install Michael Gove as PM
Theresa May could be ousted from No 10 within days after her Cabinet plotted to replace her with Michael Gove as a caretaker Prime Minister.
A senior Downing Street source told The Mail on Sunday last night that even Mrs May’s Chief Whip, Julian Smith, had advised her to set out her departure plans, with Environment Secretary Mr Gove emerging as the ‘consensus choice’ to succeed her.
Mr Gove is being championed by Cabinet Brexiteers who are furious about what they see as an attempted ‘coup’ by Remain-backing David Lidington, Mrs May’s de facto deputy.
Last night Henry Newman, one of Michael Gove’s most loyal supporters and a former aide, said the Prime Minister’s ‘ill-judged’ speech blaming MPs for the Brexit crisis ‘united Labour and Tory critics against her’
A senior Government source said yesterday that there was now ‘complete unanimity’ in the Cabinet that Mrs May should step down as soon as possible.
In a number of astonishing, fast-moving developments, coming just days before a series of historic Commons votes:
No 10 warned Tory rebels that, if they didn’t back Mrs May’s deal, the Commons could revoke Article 50, effectively cancelling Brexit;
Mrs May mounted a last-ditch effort to save the deal by pleading with Jacob Rees-Mogg to drop his opposition – as his European Research Group made plans to select their preferred leadership candidate;
A tearful Tory whip accused Mrs May of ‘betraying Brexit’ and ‘destroying our party’;
Boris Johnson demanded to the Prime Minister’s face that she rule out leading the party into an Election, while her aides wargamed what would happen if Mrs May went to the country if the Commons rejected her Brexit deal again;
No 10 scheduled the crunch votes for Wednesday and Thursday, with MPs voting on Mrs May’s deal and alternative options such as membership of a customs union;
Chancellor Philip Hammond refused demands by Cabinet colleagues to ‘wield the knife’ and tell the Prime Minister that she had to resign;
Tory MP Nigel Evans said that, if Mrs May agreed to resign, then the party’s Brexiteers would support her deal;
Central London was brought to a standstill as anti-Brexit protesters staged a major march calling for another EU referendum.
The Cabinet’s move against Mrs May comes after a disastrous week in which she blamed MPs for the delay to Brexit in a live televised address, which left Mr Smith incandescent with rage. She was then humiliated by EU leaders at a summit which agreed that, if her deal is defeated again, then Parliament will have just two more weeks to find an alternative, or risk a no-deal Brexit on April 12.
A senior Government source said yesterday that there was now ‘complete unanimity’ in the Cabinet that Prime Minister Theresa May should step down as soon as possible
A senior Government source said Mr Smith had ‘conveyed the message [that Mrs May’s Cabinet colleagues believe she should stand down] to the PM’.
A Downing Street spokesman said that they did not comment on private conversations.
The collapse in the Prime Minister’s authority has triggered rival Cabinet plots by Remainers and Brexiteers to seize power.
Pro-Remain Cabinet Ministers, led by Mr Hammond and Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd, have been backing Cabinet Office Minister Mr Lidington to take over as temporary Prime Minister.
But when pro-Brexit Cabinet Ministers, led by Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson and Chief Secretary to the Treasury Liz Truss, found out that Mr Lidington was holding talks with Labour MPs about votes on ‘soft’ Brexit measures they moved quickly to stifle the plot by backing Mr Gove instead.
Under the plan, Mr Gove would see through Brexit as PM, before a full leadership contest in the summer.
One senior Cabinet Minister told The Mail on Sunday: ‘The public will never forgive us if in a time of historical crisis our answer is David Lidington. This is where it is going to get very scary, whatever you think about it’.
Last night Henry Newman, one of Michael Gove’s most loyal supporters and a former aide, said the Prime Minister’s ‘ill-judged’ speech blaming MPs for the Brexit crisis ‘united Labour and Tory critics against her’. He added: ‘ I think she will have to offer to step down to get her deal through.’
A series of so-called ‘indicative votes’ will be held next week to test which alternatives to Mrs May’s deal are likely to pass the Commons, including a Norway-style customs union or even cancelling Brexit.
One senior Minister warned rebel Tory MPs that, if they continued to vote down Mrs May’s deal, then they would be on ‘a conveyor belt to Norway – possibly with Jeremy Corbyn leading the way’.
The Minister added: ‘If we do not deliver Brexit we are so unbelievably f****d, not just as a party or a Government, but in a national way. Now is the time to be bold, a customs union is a cop-out – it’s the easiest solution for Parliament but the worst solution for the country.
‘It has to be Mrs May’s deal, or no deal. We cannot be allowed to drift into the worst position, but that is what David Lidington is manoeuvring us to – and there is no upside to it’.
Another Minister said that it was ‘a matter of arithmetic’ that Mrs May should set out her departure date: ‘Just look at the numbers of people saying they would back the deal if she sets out a timetable for her departure and add them up. Say no more.’
A series of senior Conservative figures warned Mrs May last week that she has lost the confidence of her party.
Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the Conservatives’ 1922 Committee, visited the Prime Minister on Monday, where he told her that the number of colleagues calling for her to go was growing.
Mr Johnson also repeatedly challenged Mrs May to rule out leading the party into a General Election this year – which she has refused to do.
It is understood that all but one member of the Tory whips office think that her ‘time is up’. One, Paul Maynard, was in tears recently when he told the Prime Minister: ‘I’ve heard enough. When I was told that we would have to come over and talk to you I began to cry. I said I don’t want to go over and talk to that woman any more. She’s betrayed Brexit, destroying our party. I want her gone.’
Mrs May replied: ‘I’m sorry you feel that way.’
Education Minister Nadhim Zahawi warned yesterday of a ‘political meltdown’ if Mrs May’s deal is rejected again.
‘It’s a f****** coup’: Cabinet war over plot to replace Theresa May with her No 2 leaves Michael Gove favourite to be caretaker Prime Minister
By Glen Owen and Harry Cole for The Mail on Sunday
After a torturous 14 hours at the EU Council, the Prime Minister returned to the British residency in Brussels in the early hours of Friday morning and demanded a large whisky.
But back in Westminster, her closest Cabinet colleagues were preparing to hand Theresa May a revolver to go with it.
Senior Cabinet Ministers and allies are privately urging Mrs May to set a departure date to help get her beleaguered Brexit deal over the line as ‘a matter of arithmetic’.
Michael Gove (right) has emerged as a ‘consensus’ candidate who could bring the crucial backing of both Remainers and Brexiteers, and act as a caretaker Prime Minister should a plot to force Mrs May (left) from office go ahead
Cabinet sources have told The Mail on Sunday that Mr Lidington was initially ‘reluctant’ to step into the role of ‘caretaker’ but was told it would be a ‘four-month job’ with a strict mandate
But others have simply decided her time is up and have spent the last three days plotting how to oust her.
A senior Downing Street source told this newspaper: ‘Discussions about the Prime Minister’s future are ongoing.’
On Friday evening, David Lidington, the pro-EU Cabinet Office boss and de facto deputy PM, was said to be in the ‘advanced stages’ of a plot to force Mrs May from office and herald a long Brexit extension as an interim leader who could build a cross-party Brexit deal.
But as news of the plan leaked, it sparked a furious Cabinet backlash that saw Michael Gove emerge as a ‘consensus’ candidate who could bring the crucial backing of both Remainers and Brexiteers.
Cabinet sources have told The Mail on Sunday that Mr Lidington was initially ‘reluctant’ to step into the role of ‘caretaker’ but was told it would be a ‘four-month job with a three-pronged mandate: to negotiate a long extension, to oversee testing of what Parliament wants and to ensure a fair Tory leadership contest.’
A source said: ‘David is 60. It would be his last job in politics and what a way to go out. The key players are on board. It’s just a matter of when.’
The Mail on Sunday has learnt that Cabinet big beasts including Amber Rudd and Jeremy Hunt have urged Mr Lidington to ‘knock on the door and call time’ on Mrs May’s premiership.
The Mail on Sunday has learnt that Cabinet big beasts including Amber Rudd and Jeremy Hunt have urged Mr Lidington to ‘knock on the door and call time’ on Mrs May’s premiership
In the febrile atmosphere in Westminster, there were even claims Michael Gove had initially supported Mr Lidington acting as caretaker, with one source claiming the plot was ‘far less factional than Brexit lines’.
However, as word of Mr Lidington’s manoeuvrings ripped through Westminster on Friday evening, Brexiteer Ministers were quick to brand the Cabinet politicking a ‘Remainer coup’, with former Vote Leave boss Mr Gove touted by Ministers and MPs for the job instead.
One senior Cabinet Minister told The Mail on Sunday: ‘The British public will never forgive us if, in a time of historical crisis, our answer is David Lidington.
‘This is where it is going to get very scary, whatever you think about it.
‘If we do not deliver Brexit, we are so unbelievably f*****, not just as a party or a government, but in a national way. Now is the time to be bold. A customs union is a cop out – it’s the easiest solution for Parliament but the worst solution for the country.
‘It has to be her deal, or no deal. We cannot be allowed to drift into the worst position and that is what David Lidington is manoeuvring us to – there is no upside to it.’
And another Cabinet Minister branded the plot ‘a f****** coup.’
…And if he gets into No 10, will old foe Boris ever get him out?
Bookies last night slashed Michael Gove’s odds of being the next Prime Minister.
The Environment Secretary is now 5/1 joint favourite with his rival Boris Johnson to take the Tory crown.
Should Mr Gove secure the keys to No 10, it would be a remarkable turnaround after he stabbed Mr Johnson in the back during in the 2016 Tory leadership battle, when he withdrew his support for his fellow Brexit campaigner at the last minute so he could stand himself.
Bitter rivals: Michael Gove and Boris Johnson pull pints of beer at the Old Chapel pub in Darwen in Lancashire, as part of the Vote Leave EU referendum campaign
Having initially been sacked by the victorious Theresa May, Mr Gove was subsequently brought back into the Cabinet fold and has spent the last year being studiously loyal to the Prime Minister in public, as he sought to repair his reputation among the Tory grassroots. Although Mr Gove was touted as a ‘consensus caretaker’ last night, Mr Johnson will be wary of letting his nemesis become Tory leader without a fight.
Last night, a Ladbrokes spokesman said: ‘Money for Michael Gove in the past few days has left the firm with no choice but to cut his odds of becoming the next PM. Mr Gove continues to attract punters’ cash.’
Outside of the Cabinet, one Minister furiously rejected Mr Lidington stepping in, saying: ‘You might as well put the permanent secretaries in charge.’
They added: ‘This is a pipe dream for the bland brigade, who must be deluded if they think replacing uncertainty with more uncertainty is going to fix anything.’
The backlash also broke on to the airwaves and social media, as Tory MPs began openly discussing Mrs May standing down.
After it emerged Mr Lidington had discussed soft-Brexit plans with Labour MPs, Tory Brexiteer Michael Fabricant compared his pro-EU stance to that of Britain’s appeasing of Hitler in the 1930s.
The outspoken backbencher hit out: ‘With the PM acting like Chamberlain, we now have David Lidington freelancing and acting like Lord Halifax hoping to come to an accommodation with Labour. Enough is enough!’ Asked if the PM would still be in post by next month, fellow Tory Marcus Fysh told BBC2’s Newsnight: ‘I don’t know.’
‘We are starting to get to the stage where it really would have been good to have better negotiations going on,’ he added. And fellow Leaver James Duddridge, tweeted ‘#Resign’.
Tory peer Lord Gadhia said: ‘She may not survive to the end of the week.’ He added: ‘It is quite possible that she herself may decide “actually, look, I am an obstacle to a resolution of this process”. So we may have a very dramatic week.’
Leadership speculation is gripping all corners of the parliamentary Conservative party, with other Ministers privately accepting that a General Election under a new leader would be needed to achieve a fresh mandate from the public ahead of Round Two of EU negotiations over a trade deal.
And Brexiteer hardliners in the European Research Group are determined not to repeat their disastrous implosion during the 2016 leadership battle which allowed Mrs May, who had campaigned to Remain, to come through the divided Brexiteers.
Senior MPs in the ERG plan to hold their own leadership contest to unite around one candidate. They point out a Brexiteer only needs to come second, with 105 MPs behind them, to proceed to the final round – a vote of the overwhelmingly Eurosceptic party membership.
Last night a source close to Mr Lidington said the claims from his Cabinet colleagues were ‘nonsense’, adding: ‘David has not discussed anything of the sort. His focus is on getting the PM’s deal agreed’.

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND December 7, 2018  - Um....
Are you all ready for one of the worst weekends at the box office in many months? There are no new wide releases this weekend... not a single one. Because of that, we can cut right to the top 10, which should look something like…. Basically, the same as last weekend but everything making even less. Sigh… the only thing of note I should mention is that Universal should take advantage of the slower weekend to expand Green Book further since it’s still in only been in about 1,000 theaters so far.
1. Ralph Breaks the Internet  (Disney) - $16 million -38% 2. The Grinch  (Universal) - $11.5 million -35% 3. Creed II  (MGM) - $9.6 million -43% 4. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald  (Warner Bros.) - $5.6 million -50% 5. Bohemian Rhapsody  (20thCentury Fox) - $4.5 million -45% 6. Instant Family (Paramount) - $4.5 million -37% 7. Green Book  (Universal) - $3 million -23% 8. The Possession of Hannah Grace  (Sony/Screen Gems) - $2.9 million -55% 9.Robin Hood  (Lionsgate) - $2.5 million -47% 10. Widows  (20thCentury Fox) – $2.4 million -45%
LIMITED RELEASES
While there are no new wide releases in theaters and maybe you’ve already seen most of the movies above, there are a few new limited releases including at least one or two expected to expand wider in December, including two excellent dramas.
Tumblr media
Period costume drama enthusiasts should be interested in Working Title’s latest, MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS  (Focus Features), which is an absolutely fantastic directorial debut by Josie Rourke, starring Saoirse Ronan as the title character and Margot Robbie as Queen Elizabeth. The film covers Mary’s return to Scotland to take over the throne as queen, while also trying to get Elizabeth to accept her as a successor since Elizabeth is unable to have children. Along the way, Mary is paired with a number of men including the flamboyant Lord Darnley, played by Jack Lowden from Dunkirk, who gives her an heir even as she great to hate him. These were tough times in Scotland with civil wars and as many conspiracies to take the crown as in Game of Thrones.  Also starring Joe Alwyn, David Tennant, Gemma Chan and Martin Compston, this is an amazing film led by another stirring performance by Ronan. Mary’s story is fascinating but also tragic, and it’s about time that someone did more with the character than just as a footnote in Elizabeth’s story. I was hugely impressed with the scope and scale of Rouke’s first feature film and the amount of emotions I felt as I watched it.  In any other year, Mary, Queen of Scots would be an Oscar frontrunner, but I feel like the fact this is being seen months after Yorgos Lanthomos’ unique spin on the costume drama genre with The Favourite (which premiered during festival season back in Sept.) might give it a distinct disadvantage among awards voters. Either way, this excellent historical drama opens in select cities, and if you’re interested in British history or royalty, I highly recommend it.

Another great movie coming out Friday is Peter Hedges’ BEN IS BACK  (LD Distribution/Roadside Attractions/Lionsgate), starring Julia Roberts and Lucas Hedges. You may remember Hedges from his debut Pieces of April or the excellent Dan in Real Life, starring Steve Carell. Oddly, this film deals with a similar subject as Carell’s latest Beautiful Boy i.e. drug addiction, but I much preferred this film. Lucas Hedges plays Ben, a young adult who had been sent to rehab to deal with his debilitating drug addiction, but he shows up back at home on Christmas Eve, much to the concern of his mother (Roberts). She’s very worried that he’ll relapse to his bad habit being away from rehab, but also Ben has left enemies in the drug-dealing world, one of whom kidnaps the family’s beloved dog, sending mother and son on a tense night out into the drug world to find the pooch. I was pretty blown away by this movie which goes from family drama to something akin to a thriller, and the performances by Roberts and Hedges are fantastic, although the film also stars  the always-great Courtney B. Vance. This opens in select theaters Friday, and I’ll have an interview with the elder Hedges over at NextBestPicture sometime later this week.
INTERVIEW WITH FILMMAKER PETER HEDGES
One of my favorite movies from this year’s Tribeca Film Festival is actor Alex Pettyfer’s directorial debut BACK ROADS (Samuel Goldwyn), a drama co-written by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Adrian Lyne (Fatal Attraction).  Based on Tawni O’Dell’s best-selling novel, it’s a fantastic study of family trauma as Pettyfer plays Harley Altmyer, a young man trying to care for his three younger sisters in rural Pennsylvania after his mother (Juliette Lewis) is jailed for killing their abusive father. While trying to keep his teen sister Amber (Nicola Peltz) out of trouble, Harley begins a tryst with an older married woman, played by Jennifer Morrison.  It’s playing one night only at the Roxy Cinema in New York on Thursday 11pm then opens in select cities and on VOD starting Friday.
Actor Brady Corbet directs his second feature, VOX LUX  (Neon), which follows the rise of pop star Celeste, who as aa teenager survives a school shooting incident and sings at the memorial service. With the help of her songwriting sister (Stacy Martin), Celeste (played as a teenager by Raffey Cassidy) becomes hugely successful before become embroiled in scandal. Years later, she returns for her comeback (now played by Natalie Portman) while trying to maintain a relationship with her own teen daughter (also played by Cassidy). Jude Law plays Celeste’s beleaguered manager, and original songs were written for the film by Sia. It opens in select cities, more than likely at many Alamo Drafthouse theaters, and we’ll see where it expands from there. I saw this a few months back and was generally mixed, since I thought Elisabeth Moss’ somewhat similar role in Her Smell (which will play SXSW next year) was much stronger.
TYREL (Magnolia) is the new film from Chilean-born filmmaker Sebastian Silva  (The Maid, Crystal Fairy, Nasty Baby), starring Jason Mitchell from Straight Outta Compton as Tyler, who goes for a weekend trip to the Catskills with a group of people he doesn’t know, only to realize he’s the only black person. As the alcohol flows, he becomes the victim of racial stereotyping. This opens in New York at the IFC Center on Wednesday, then will very slowly roll out into other cities, including Columbus and Baltimore on Friday.
Opening in select cities and also at IFC Center is Oliver Parker’s Swimming with Men  (IFC Films) starring Rob Brydon (The Trip) as an accountant going through a mid-life crisis who joins a group of all-male synchronized swimmers, and boy, did I want to enjoy this Britcom more than I actually did, which is a shame.
Kate Bosworth co-produces husband Michael Polish’s new drama Nona (North of Two), about a young Honduran woman named Nona (played by Sulem Calderon) who meets handsome traveler Hecho (Jesy McKinney) and takes him up on the offer to go towards the United States, where she can reunite with her mother. They travel across the country via car, bus, boat and eventually by foot through Guatemala and Mexico only for her to discover Hecho’s true intentions.
Opening at the Film Forum is the Danish film The Charmer (Film Movement) from Milad Alami, which follows Esmail, a good-looking Iran immigrant who is constantly picking up Danish women in bars and bedding them before dumping them. When he meets a fellow Iranian woman (played by stunning pop star Soho Rezanejad), she immediately has figured out his game, but it’s one he’s ready to set aside after he falls madly in love with her. This is a fairly slow-build character piece that goes off on a few odd tangents and never really delivers on the thriller aspects promised, but still is fairly worthwhile.
The Italian drama On My Skin from filmmaker Alessio Cremonini looks at the case of Stefano Cucchi (Alessandro Borghi) who was arrested for a minor crime and then found dead while held in detention. It also will open at the IFC Center Friday, but only receives a single showing each day.
Onto this week’s docs. If you’re in New York, you won’t want to miss Amazing Grace, also at Film Forum. If you hadn’t heard about it, this is a 1972 concert film showing Aretha Franklin performing gospel tunes with full band and choir, and it’s an amazing document of the Queen of Soul while at her peak, singing the hymns that she would sing in her father’s church. It plays for one week only at the Film Forum to qualify it for Oscars, but doesn’t have distribution yet.
Alexis Bloom’s doc Divide and Conquer: The Story of Roger Ailes (Magnolia,A&E IndieFilms), exec. produced by Alex Gibney, will open in select cities and On Demand Friday. It’s a comprehensive look at the life and career of the late Fox News CEO, who died less than a year after being fired for sexual harassment. I though this was an excellent doc with a lot of people talking about Ailes you might not expect (like Glenn Beck) but watching this movie made me feel very slimy since Ailes was such a low-life in high places. You can watch it On Demand or in select cities starting Friday, though I’m not sure who might be interested in this, especially since so many liberals I know didn’t want to watch Errol Morris’ Steve Bannon doc when it played the festival circuit.
Onto the VOD specials i.e. movies getting limited theatrical releases that you’re more likely to see on demand and on digital outlets:
Frequent Guillermo del Toro collaborator Ron Perlman stars in Michael Caton-Jones’ new film Asher (Momentum Pictures) as a former Mossad agent, now a gun-for-hire living in Brooklyn, who breaks his oath when he falls in love with Famke Janssen’s Sophie.
Matthew Hope’s action-thriller All the Devil’s Men (Lionsgate Premiere) stars Milo Gibson, Wililam Fichtner and Sylvia Hoeks. It involves a manhunt through the streets of London for a CIA operative who might be involved in terrorism.
Karen Gillen’s directorial debut The Party’s Just Beginning (The Orchard) is released in theaters Friday and on VOD on Tuesday, Dec. 11, following its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Also on Thursday begins Russian Film Week, taking place at the SVA Theater between Dec. 8 and 14, showcasing the best of Russian cinema, both old and new, including Russia’s submission for the Oscars, Sobibor, and Timur Bekmambetov’s Yolki Posledniye, which never received a U.S. release.
STREAMING (VOD)
I haven’t had a chance to see the Dolly Parton-produced Netflix comedy DUMPLIN’, but it stars Patti Cake$ breakout Danielle Macdonald as the plus-size daughter of a Texas beauty queen (played by Jennifer Aniton) who decides to shake things up by entering a local pageant. It features a new song by Parton, and it will play in a few theaters for awards eligibility. From Italy comes Marco Risi’s 5 Star Christmas(akaNatale A 5 Stelle), a wacky comedy about the Italian Prime Minister visiting Hungary and while spending time with his secret lover, they discover a corpse in their hotel suite. (I’m loving that these international hits that would never get distribution in the U.S. are finding a home.)  Also, from director Bert Marcus comes The American Meme, which follows the journey of four “social media disruptors” including Paris Hilton, Josh Ostrovsky (aka Fat Jew) and two others as they build their online empires. I missed this at Tribeca, so glad it found a home. Last week’s Andy Serkis-directed Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle will also be streaming on the network this weekend, and I recommend it but not for kids under 8.
Also premiering on VOD Thursday (before its DVD/Blu-ray release next Tuesday) is Christina Kallas’ mystery drama The Rainbow Experiment (Gravitas Ventures), which premiered at Slamdance earlier this year. It’s a whodunnit set in a NYC high school where a student is permanently injured during a science experiment.
Also, my good friend Ned Ehrbar (who I haven’t seen since he moved to New York!) has his directorial debut California No available on digital platforms starting today. It’s about a “rudderless junketeer” (something I know about from experience) played by Noah Segan (Looper, Brick) whose wife (something I don’t know about from lack of experience) confesses that they’re in an open marriage, something he did not realize. This sends him into a tailspin as he falls for another woman and moves in with a former A-lister.
REPERTORY
On top of the usual repertory offerings in New York and L.A., old movie lovers across the country can catch the 25thAnniversary screening of Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-winning Schindler’s List, which will play at select theaters across the nation starting on Thursday night.
METROGRAPH (NYC):
I know absolutely nothing about photographer/writer Mario Ruspoli, but restorations of his short films and Florence Dauman’s 2011 documentary Mario Ruspoli, Prince of the Whales (finally translated into English) will screen starting Thursday and through the weekend with Dauman doing intros and QnAs throughout the weekend. Those who want to learn more about the French New Wave will have two more opportunities this weekend as the Metrograph screens two 35mm prints of Jacques Demy’s The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967) and Jean Renoir’s French Cancan (1955), the latter both Saturday and Sunday. Also, on Friday, the Metrograph will start screening a new restoration of Billy Wilder’s The Apartment (MGM/Park Circus), the Oscar-winning 1960 comedy starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine that I only discovered for the first time last year when the Metrograph screened a 35mm print. The 1938 Japanese horror film Ghost Cat and the Mysterious Shamisen from Kiyohiko Ushihara will screen on Thursday and Friday nights.
THE NEW BEVERLY  (L.A.):
In its second weekend since returning post-renovation, the New Bev is offering double features of The Untouchablesand Capone on Weds and Thursday, Scorsese’s Goodfellas and Machine Gun McCain on Friday, as well as Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs at midnight Friday, afternoon screenings of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas on Friday and Saturday, as well as Death Race2000 at midnight on Saturday to commemorate David Carradine’s birthday. This weekend’s Playtime: Family Matineeis Charles Lane’s Sidewalk Stories (1989), a silent movie about homelessness in New York that takes cues from Chaplin’s The Kid.
FILM SOCIETY OF LINCOLN CENTER (NYC):
Christian Pentzold: The State We Are In continues this weekend with more screenings of the German filmmaker’s work including The State I Am In*, The Young Lieutenant and one of my personal favorites, Phoenix, on Sunday night. (*I saw Pentzold’s first theatrically-distributed feature this past weekend, and it was fantastic, following a young woman (Julia Hummer) living in hiding with her parents. Definitely can recommend that and Phoenix.)
FILM FORUM (NYC):
Ingmar Bergman’s classic masterpiece The Seventh Seal (1957), starring Max von Sydow, will screen from a new 4k restoration from Janus Films, playing for two weeks beginning Friday. This weekend’s Film Forum Jr. is the classic Oscar-winning movie musical West Side Story (1961), currently being remade by Steven Spielberg.
QUAD CINEMA  (NYC):
Continuing the repertory love for Orson Welles with his latest film, the long-lost The Other Side of the Wind, the Quad is launching Actor For Hire: The Other Side of Orson Welles, which as explained, is a series featuring Orson Welles as actor including The Black Rose, Butterfly,Compulsion, The Third Man, A Man for All Seasons and many, many more.
IFC CENTER  (NYC)
Beginning a month-long screening of the Frank Capra classic It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) with scattered appearances by Donna Reed’s daughter Mary Owen between Dec. 11 and 24. Sure, it will be on TV a lot but when was the last time you saw it on the big screen? Late Night Favorites features midnight screenings of David Fincher’s Fight Club on Friday and Saturday, Weekend Classics continues its Coen Brothers retrospective with the Oscar-winning Best Picture No Country for Old Men, while Shaw Brothers Spectaculars continues with the classic Five Deadly Venoms.
EGYPTIAN THEATRE (LA):
To celebrate its 20thanniversary, the renovated Grauman’s Theater will screen a digital restoration of Ernst Lubitsch’s Rosita (1923), starring Mary Pickford on Friday night. Spike Lee will continue his repertory run (after appearing at Metrograph this past weekend) by showing his new film BlacKkKlansman and introducing his 1992 biopic Malcolm X, starring John David Washington’s father Saturday night. Then on Sunday, there will be a double feature of Do the Right Thing (1989) and Crooklyn (1994) with a discussion with Lee in between.
AERO  (LA):
Following a special screening of Tamara Jenkins’ latest Private Life on Thursday night, the Aero will do a FREE two-film tribute to Jenkins on Friday, showing The Slums of Beverly Hills (1998) and The Savages (2007). Kids of all ages will want to check out the Aero’s Looney Tunes Winter Wonderland on Saturday night and The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) on Sunday afternoon. Plus they’re showing the Coens’ The Big Lebowski just because they can… oh, and it’s the movie’s 20th anniversary.
BAM CINEMATEK(NYC):
Apparently, BAM is trying to compete with Film Forum by presenting An Evening with Liv Ullman with the actress/director celebrating her 80thbirthday with the theater on Thursday night with a screening of Jan Troell’s 1971 film The Emigrants, starring Ullman and Max von Sydow (from The Seventh Seal).
MOMA  (NYC):
Modern Matinees: Douglas Fairbanks Jr. presents A Woman of Affairs (1928) on Wednesday, 1938’s The Young in Heart on Thursday, and That Lady in Ermine (1948) on Friday, so you can see how Fairbanks changed across three decades.
MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE  (NYC):
A new era begins with new chief curator Eric Hynes taking over for from founder David Schwartz, although this weekend only sees Family Matinee showings for Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas on Saturday and Sunday. This series continues through the end of the year.
LANDMARK THEATRES NUART  (LA):
Still showing the Italian drama Senso through Thursday and then a midnight screening of Nicolas Cage’s Mandy on Friday with producer Daniel Noah doing a QnA with director Joe Lynch moderating.
That’s it for this week. Next week… NEW MOVIES!!!! Spider-Man: Into the Spider-versewill take on the Peter Jackson production of Mortal Engines, while Clint Eastwood returns with The Mule.
