Used #Grubhub for the first time yesterday. What a wondrous experience. I feel like a Neanderthal for delaying it for as long as I did.
“Oh #Harder” was part of the River Jackson EP (songs 16-17), released a few months after the N3RD EP. It’s also GoBoy’s first intentional #cringe song, after which GoBoy would have a few intentional cringe songs on each album, the most recent being “Chocolate Milk (Song 124).”
Some of the most popular songs of all time are intentional cringe songs (in my opinion). “Wannabe” by @SpiceGirls, “My Humps” by @BlackEyedPeas, and “Like a Virgin” by @Madonna are prime examples. While cringe content doesn’t necessarily help with marketing, at least from my experience, it makes the production process genuinely entertaining. It’s the “I dare you to upload this to the internet” game. It provides small doses of cortisol on command. Something to shake the monotony of life (excerpt from post 16).
The structure of “Oh Harder” mimics your typical pop song structure (intro, 1st verse, 1st chorus, 2nd verse, 2nd chorus, bridge, 3rd chorus), though “Oh Harder” has an abnormally long intro, coming in at 30 seconds in length.
The verses were inspired by @Blink182, the chorus was inspired by Owl City (@owlcityofficial), and the bridge was inspired by @BreatheCarolina.
The lyrics “I wore cologne to get the feeling right” during the 1st verse pay homage to “What’s My Age Again” by Blink-182.
“Oh Harder” is mixed better than a majority of the songs on GoBoy 3. That’s what happens when you stop doing something for seven years - you become rusty (more on the seven-year hiatus in posts 23 and 36). It wouldn’t be until song 56 “Your Bed” that GoBoy would get back to this level of production quality.
While “Oh Harder” is the first GoBoy song to impress me in terms of production quality, I have some gripes: (1) A 30 second intro is a good way to lose listeners before the song begins. (2) Variations should have been added to each chorus to increase replay value. (3) Nonsensical lyrics can be fun and catchy (i.e. Nirvana songs, which Cobain admitted were nonsensical), but the lyrics in “Oh Harder” just sound too illogical, like they were written by a teenager who wasn’t experienced in lyric writing (which is exactly what I was). (4) A low end cut was added to the master track of “Oh Harder,” which was totally unnecessary, but common in the music industry back then. I stopped doing that during GoBoy 6, and subsequently retroactively removed the low end cut for all songs on GoBoy 3, 4 and 5, a process that took an entire month (more on that in post 37).
I remember being thoroughly disappointed by the reaction to the River Jackson EP on the internet, because it wasn’t the explosion that I had experienced just a few months prior with the N3RD EP. Instead, it received a slow trickle of attention that consisted of praise from high school girls, shitposts by college guys, and overall mixed opinions. In reflection, I agree with the mixed opinions (excerpt from post 16).

Feeling really nostalgic today for some reason, so I went digging through some old pictures on Facebook. Got this one of @telletwa & David Schmitt from the crowd during @breathecarolina’s set on my two-week 2014 Warped Tour run. That was a really good year. (If it isn’t obvious, this is before I ever decided to seriously pick up a camera.) . . . . . . #photography #concertphotography #concertphotographer #livemusicphotography #livemusicphotographer #musicphotography #musicphotographer #throwback #memory #warpedtour #summer2014 #breathecarolina #tellesmith #tourstories #pointandshoot https://www.instagram.com/p/CiLSNG2uUC0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Walking in to my very first Warped Tour when I was in high school, I had no idea what I was in for. All I knew was that it was basically a mega concert with tons of my favorite bands. That first Warped Tour turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life. I was overwhelmed with how many bands I was able to see in one day, all the opportunities to meet them and go to signings, and the exorbitant amount of merchandise available (some of it was even free). I left weighed down with sweat, grime, tons of loot, and incredible memories. Not only did I have a billion signed posters and new T-shirts, I had an amazing experience that has stuck with me over the years.

For a long time I went religiously each year, until I reached a point where I stopped recognizing most of the bands, getting off work was tricky, and I just couldn’t fathom being in that oppressing humidity all day. Knowing what I know now, I really wish I had sucked it up and gone.

When it was announced that this would be the last year for Warped Tour, I knew I had to go. This concert has been a huge part of my life and the lives of so many, it was so important to say goodbye. The official statement is that it’s “the last full cross country run” of the Warped Tour and I don’t know exactly what that will mean in the future, but I feel pretty confident they won’t be coming to my town if a more limited tour ever happens.

Warped Tour created a unique opportunity for both fans and artists. It has given a stage to lesser known bands to play across the country to those who love them and many others who soon will. It’s been a place for more established artists to headline and have a closer experience with their fans. I’ve seen some of my favorite bands, some I’ve never heard of (and sometimes haven’t heard about since), and some bands that became my new favorites. Warped Tour also gives the opportunity for a community of people who love music to come together. Warped Tour has brought the music festival experience to us, traveling the country instead of forcing its audience to do so.

Thursday I attended my very last Warped Tour and I don’t feel like I’ve fully processed it. The day was amazing. We ended up with the nicest weather I’ve ever had for Warped, which is a miracle all on its own. In true Warped Tour fashion, I saw sets from all kinds of bands playing all kinds of alternative music. In one day I saw 3OH!3, Palaye Royale, Yungblud, We The Kings, Tonight Alive, The Amity Affliction, and Twiztid. I was amazed at the audience that turned out for We The Kings, a band I’ve seen on Warped before and who have grown right along with the tour. Witnessing that kind of progress, from being on the smallest stage to packing the amphitheater, is incredible . Warped Tour allowed me to be a part of that. It’s so gratifying to see artists succeed in that way and Warped plays such a huge role in that.

I don’t think we all even realize yet what a loss this will be. Warped Tour has been this incredible platform for artists to reach larger audiences and connect more personally with their fans. For us fans, its losing this annual celebration of our music, losing the chance to meander into a random set and find that we love the band, and losing the chance to go to several signings in one day and talk to our heroes. This is big.

All that sadness cannot overshadow how grateful I am for all my days at Warped. I have loved every hot, sweaty, gross minute of it. I wouldn’t trade those days for anything. Those days have been part of shaping who I am, the music I’ll always love, and the memories I’ll always look back on. Thank you to Kevin Lyman and everyone who has been a part of making Warped Tour happen over the years. It’s been amazing. Best day ever.
