June 2017 Listening List

Another great month of music highlighted of course by the June 30th release of Gravebloom by The Acacia Strain.

Coma Witch by The Acacia Strain: In Preparation for the release of Gravebloom, I was revisiting my favorite album from the band to date. For those of you that read the DarkTunes column on the darkrevmedia.com page you are already familiar with Coma Witch and the influence it had on the creation of my novel, In the Shadow of the Witch. The epic song, Observer, is amazing. I especially like listening to this while sitting out in the woods around a fire. It feels like a sonic augmented reality experience as the natural sounds of the woods blends with what is going on in the song creating a very dark, terrifying experience. I've been listening to Gravebloom since early this morning and love it so far. However, I am going to reserve full judgment till next month and look forward to discovering what new ideas this album sparks for a future novel. More to come ...

The Red Way (Single) by Stomb: Love Stomb. If you haven't heard these guys from France yet give it a listen. Some of my favorite instrumental metal. There new album Duality is due out this September and The Red Way is the first released single. Sounds awesome. But while your waiting for this check out, The Grey. This album channels, Gojira, Humanity's Last Breath, Animals as Leaders and Meshuggah but in unique way that makes it all Stomb.

Panopticon by Isis (the band): Unfortunate that this band's name is now synonymous with terrorism and needs to be qualified. I enjoy everything from this band. Usually when I get into listening to them I go right for, Wavering Radiant or In the Absence of Truth, so I want to revisit some of the other albums. This is a great one.

Slave to Nothing by Fit for a King: I guess this month I started going back and revisiting previous albums from bands. I had been listening to Deathgrip which has a few songs on the DarkTunes list for Horn and Dagger and then decided to listen to this album again. The songs, Slave to Nothing and Breakaway are two of my favorites.

La Partition by Uneven Structure: Yes I'm still listening to this. I love this album. I waited so long for its release and now continually go back to it whenever there is a sonic lull.

Seal the Deal and Let's Boogie by Volbeat: Volbeat typically has too many pop elements in their music for my taste. I don't like the entire album but I must say that songs like, The Devil's Bleeding Crown, Marie Laveau and The Gates of Babylon are guilty pleasures. They have a great groove and find myself getting into it in spite of myself. Great workout music.

Thousands of Evils by Vildhjarta: This falls in the category of wishful thinking. I continue to hope that Vildhjarta is going to release new material. It's like waiting for a new Tool album to come out (maybe not that long but it feels like it). Masstaden was a primary inspiration for the concept of Horn & Dagger and I feel this album will also have a story line associated with it at some point.

A Darkened Gospel by A Wake in Providence: I wrote in the Darktunes for Horn and Dagger how this band's album Serpents influenced the novel. As I was editing and making additions to the novel I heard this song and it became influential in inspiring some of the details of the book. Great song.
