Researching the topic of The Feast of the Three Saints Alfio, Filadeelfo and Cirino, I was trying to avoid a lengthy blog post by using additional web links...but this will certainly not be the case.  I’m happy for my children to develop an interest on their cultural heritage and at the same time the education process is manifesting in my veins more so.  My children absolutely loved the bus trip to Stanthorpe and the whole entire festival was in their words awesome and interesting, and they had the most cherished day with their Nonna.  In my mum’s eyes it was a pilgrimage to pray to these saints to assist with her grandson’ s health.  I really wish  it was as plain and simple for myself but it isn’t as I don’t have the same faith as she.  However it was a pilgrimage of sorts- in the discovery of community, of tradition, and of teaching.  You can’t expect an instant cure but the message came across very clear, that you can build yourself up to develop the strength to cope, change and adapt to times of adversity.  My children enjoyed the mass, as its not a weekly ritual for us, and amazingly they didn’t mind the bilingual presentation. A brief history of the saints our family found fascinating.  The presentation of the gifts- beautiful freshly baked breads and wine of the region and finally the procession of the statues out of the church briefly stopped by the Cryer and his heartfelt prayer, I really wish I understood what said. (have to quiz Mum).  Firecrackers as we exited St Joseph’s, donations made and a card of the 3 saints handed out to Tim.  He has placed this in his room in a corner of his picture frame with the photo of him fishing to look over him.  Then out to the main street of Stanthorpe for the procession.  “Surprisingly” a few protesters, not sure Baptist maybe, against their beliefs of worshipping icons.  Each to their own, as long as its peaceful that's all that matters.  What’s an Sicilian festival without food!!!!!????!!!  Wonderful almond breads and biscuits, crostoli, cannoli even   Ossa di morto,  biscuits suited more for all souls day.  A family who I met that sat beside us at our table as there were spare seats came to the festival on recommendation of the food alone.  They were originally from  Switzerland, on holiday camping and from Brissie also.  The Roasted Chestnuts was the driving force mainly.  They thought that Cannoli were Cannelloni, expecting to find pasta, instead a hybrid Aussie/Sicilian BBQ.  (Fennel sausages, roasted peppers.....etc).  Anyway we all officially toasted to a real autumn experience in Stanthorpe...as there is so such season in Brisbane...and the roasted chestnuts was an emblem of this that brought back both countries of our cultural backgrounds (Sicily and Switzerland).  Gosh it was a great day and that will stay with us thanks to my wonderful Mum/ Nonna.  Link for the Brisbane festival, also celebrated in Silkwood Tully North Queensland and all across the world, saw a link for Philadelphia.               https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMjq6ohFLdk
