[ The first thing you see when you open the door is blood. It's bright fucking neon yellow but you know its blood. Right after that the words finally register and you recognize the trembling figure. ]

[ Your heart shatters at his little voice. It'd be funny that he's repeating back to you exactly what you told D if you were thinking about anything besides how fragile he looks. ]

BRO: Shit- lil' bird? What the fuck happened? Fuck-- Don't apologize.

[ Your lungs squeeze and stomach drops. You reach out but stop yourself from touching him. Every instinct screams to pull him into your arms and hold him, comfort and protect him, but you can't. He's so scared already, you don't want to cause him any more distress. ]

What I love most about that single frame between the reunion with Mario and Luigi, that one frame just before Mario barrel hugs him. When Mario is crouched and he has this huge smile on his face is the fact that you can tell that he’s taking in a huge gulp of air.

There’s a distinct emotion a person gets when someone they love is out of their line of vision. It leaves them utterly unable to fully breathe and in a perpetual state of fear until their loved one is back in their line of sight.

And that’s exactly what Mario was going through the entire movie and especially in that one single frame. Saving Luigi, know that his little brother was alive in front of him, he’s finally able to breathe again and it leaves him gasping for with relief.

Neither brothers have been able to comfortably breath throughout this whole adventure without the other.

Mario has travelled a fair distance, got beaten up by (and then beat) a super powered ape, and just now flew in at terrific speeds to catch Luigi from death.

He was this close to losing Luigi after all that.

All the worry, all the stress, all the adrenaline, has finally caught up to him.
