most cats you see both in warrior cats and in real life dont have breeds! they're all just domestic short/longhairs! so Airleap is a domestic shorthair

but if i had to make him into a Fancy Breed.... Havana Brown with white spotting. the square elongated muzzle for sure fits him

and if i just wanted to go absolutely crazy.... Snowshoe/Ragdoll

i know everybody likes to make fun of the dog world by comparing it to the "chill" cat world but like. purebred cat people are not ANY more chill than purebred dog folk and new cat breeds are just as susceptible to damaging inbreeding/low population size and breeding of unhealthy traits than dogs, sometimes i think perhaps more.

I want to take this opportunity to talk about short tail mutations in cats, with the Japanese Bobtail and Cymric as examples. Btw Cymric is just a longhaired Manx, so we're talking about the Manx gene here. The Manx mutation for short tails is notorious for the associated health complications, even including death. You see, the mutation works by eliminating some vertebra and that makes the tail shorter. Sometimes it eliminates too many vertebra. In any case, you should never breed tailless x tailless Manx. In contrast, the mutation that gives the Japanese breed its short tail seems to be harmless and devoid of negative side effects. There are probably more than these two that can cause short tails in cats - some harmless, some very dangerous. Anyway. Think twice before buying a Manx or one of the breeds derived from it, and carrying a potentially very dangerous mutation.

dominant allele: B - full pigment production, black cat (wild type)

"middle" allele: b - less pigment, chocolate cat (variant)

recessive allele: bl - even less pigment, cinnamon cat (variant)

Order of dominance: B > b > bl

Low-grade white (?): Hypothetic gene(s). Even with the extreme variability of the white spotting allele(s), the existence of some independently inherited genes is strongly suspected. Their effects most commonly manifest as a white locket: a small white patch on the chest or the belly, and/or a white tail tip. I'm not sure if there is any consensus whether these are more likely to be recessive or dominant alleles.

Ok ok, I'm actually not sure that their white tailtip is not just part of their general white-spotting, which does have a lot of unpredictibility. But still, cats without any white but their tailtip exist. I think.

tbh i don't think it is realistically a good idea but it's interesting to wonder if cats could evolve the vast differences of physical traits that dogs have if they were selectively bred that way

I don’t think you were mean about cat genetics at all tbh! It’s one of my special interests but I didn’t feel insulted. Honestly if you used actual cat genetics for WC, the characters end up being either ginger, black tabby, or tortoiseshell after a couple of generations. that’s super boring! All the Tigerstar clones wouldn’t even look like Tigerstar! where is the Drama!

though it would be funny in one instance: Nightheart would be a ginger tabby, so he would actually look like Firestar, lmao.

I'm way more interested in stuff like, how cat taste buds are controlled by two genetics that prevent a specific kind of protein folds, which is why they can't taste sweet or spice, y'know? Or how human hands have a dominant gene to put them on backwards and it's how some geneologists explain how Dominant doesn't mean Definite.

Incorrect breed guesses, Cat edition:

Everyone thinks Rebel is a Bengal or Bengal cross. They don't believe me when I say she is your typical cat. Shorthair variety, brown spotted tabby in color. Her spots look nothing like Bengal spots.

You have given me Jessy brain rot and it’s not a bad thing. I now am a Jessy wc fan she is amazing and wonderful and I love her.

-She is based semi off a ocicat! I think she’s a pretty medium sized cat with small agile paws and a strong tail. In a TC au I think she could even learn to use her tail for climbing and stuff

-I hc her as cis using she/her and bisexual it’s just so fitting for her. My fav ship for her is definitely Squirrelflight x Jessy I love them so much

-If she was a warrior I’m between her either keeping her name of Jessy and being named Jessyspring. If she had a more normal name I like Wrenspring, Sparrowsnap or Chaffinchleap
