Okay so this one's incredibly specific from a story that I'm writing in my head.

Hung in the church is a painting of a knight slaying a dragon

A was treated like a monster by the townspeople A's whole life and has a bitter hatred towards the head religion of the town. Secretly internalizes the cruel jeering of the town and believes themself unworthy of love, or nobody safe enough to love A. On more than one occasion people have tried to warm up to A but A realizes too late that they were just trying to convert A to the religion and use their marriage to steal A's hoard of gold...oh did I forget to mention A is a hot dragonoid?B is a devotee of the religion of the highest order of the land, a virtual angel who was sent on a holy mission to put an end to the disturbance of the town. They tell him to kill the dragon.

They realize that the world around them was spun from generations of complex misunderstandings and form a tight bond as they go on a campaign to discover what really happened and make the world a better place as B has set out to do.

B has serious daddy issues, Bs dad is a dragon slayer. He has a complex where he tries to be as nice as possible to try and "make up" for looking just like his dad. He tries to fight inequality from inside the system and doesn't seem to understand any issues with that . A will not hesitate for even a moment to correct him on this.

For like 4 seasons (including one where they go on a pirate ship and have a whole pirate story arc) their dynamic is the optimist and the nihilist working together for a shared goal. A comes out of their scales and B forms a more complex perspective of the other side of the wall.

(I was planning on just keeping them like this because I genuinely hate forced romance, well oops)

It breaks his heart to realize she's been such a fool and overcompinsates twice as hard. Eventually burning himself out.

A always event hard on B because A truly never thought that his near endless rays of obnoxious sunshine could go out. A feels horrible and shuts down, blaming themselves for breaking their prescious source of glowing warmth.

A becomes overly agreeable and enabling of B in hopes it will bring his spark back, thinking themselves and their constant badgering and putting down the course corrosion that works away at him. A's not entirely wrong, but their approach is completely misguided by conditioning saying that a dragon is only compatible with agreeable society if they are a docile pet.

B doesn't need doting . He needs A more then ever now and instead of helping A shut down. The sudden personality change terrifying him as this was exactly what he was trying to avoid by enabling A to express themselves even to extremes. He's reminded of his mother.

They eventually get over it but the world is slightly dimmer now. As the sun has been overcast and the pessimistic dragon will never change.

A has crippling paranoia and is hurt too deeply to handle a relationship

B is hands over heels in love with her but understands that A will take any approach as some kinda trick, and he doesn't blame A one bit for this. He also has a handy helping of purity culture guilt that prevents him from acknowledging or fully understanding his feelings.

A and B are just friends to spite eventually doing all the things a couple does. They don't notice because it all happened so fast and so authentically and smoothly and all these events on the "they're in love" checklist (which A denounces the entire concept of) happened spaced apart between acts of sacrifices and near deaths that leave both of them shellshocked and unhealthily dependant on each other. They never stopped to look back and put it all together. Even if they did they'd have no other word for these repressed feelings other than "very close friends out of nessesity".

Through a combination of the world conspiring against them B is pressured to Merry by his horrible mother and is about to be wed to a beautiful but indescribable stranger to carry on his "proud lineage". As stress (and his unhealthy relationship with A) is wearing him down and the time is slowly running out he rolls over in his bed which at some point he started sharing with A (As cold blooded and was freezing to death) and realized he can't imagine being without A and proposes. Both of them were not emotionally prepared enough for marriage but they both don't know that because both of them don't know what the signs of relationship burnout is and blame themselves, playing the roll of happy domestic couple to try to prove to themselves that they're fine. Both of them can't tell the difference between being desperate and touch starved and being in love.

A once again realizing that maybe they messed up by pushing B away feels guilty and tries to offer him their body. Thinking that this is what he'd want. He does not , he might actually be asexual but he doesn't know and now thinks that this is what A wants.

They try , they both have a massive panic attack after which A is completely emotionally detached and B is the one left to do the aftercare for both of them

Both of them are told by their peers completely different and contradictory things about how love is supposed to feel that constantly lead to them bickering. They are living in the same house and hold no contempt for the other , no , they desperately need each other, but neither of them can approach the other anymore.

They desperately fight off any signs off their relationship falling apart while scrambling to put up more scaffolding of a home that was never on a sound foundation to begin with.

At some point through all this they actually did fall in love with each other...at least they think so.

hello! i really want to learn more about ww1, i saw 1917 and it sparked something in me and ww1 specifically seems so complex and interesting, but it is has a lotttt of information, do u have any advice for any specific things to read/learn about first? or should i just dive in head first and learn about random stuff?

Good question! Also, I’m REALLY happy 1917 is bringing in a lot of new people wanting to learn more about WWI!

The good news is I find WWI is a subject that naturally allows you to branch out your knowledge no matter where you start. My best tip for learning more about the history: start out with ANY area that interests you, find a fact about it, and see where it takes you! I guarantee you’ll start out just wanting to know a little more about food served in the trenches and by the end of the week, you’ll be chest deep in a million other things you got caught up in learning!

For example, one of the first things that got me interested in WWI was a memoir (which I HIGHLY recommend) by Vera Brittain: Testament of Youth. From there, I researched her brother, Captain Edward Brittain and stumbled upon the story of his death and his homosexuality. It led me to Geoffrey Thurlow, a friend he showed clear evidence of having been in love with, and then the changes in male affection during the 1900s. It led me to learn of the “Edwardian Period” and delve into the social, political, and aesthetic aspects of the era. I started watching WWI films, reading academic articles, buying books, and one piece of information led to the next!

If 1917 is what got you into this, that’s a good sign! Cos I bet you were just as hurt as I was seeing depictions of that tragedy and were moved by that heartbreak! But while you’re learning about uniforms and trench foot and so on, I think a good chunk of time should also be dedicated to understanding why it’s simultaneously important to be critical of the war, and understand more about why people were very critical of it at the time, and the lasting impact it had on soldiers all the way up to young people today because it’s a HUGE theme throughout the conflict. I do a much more eloquent job explaining it in an ask someone sent me about my interest in studying, but like I said, VERY important to understand the extent of its effects and how what happened catalysed the modern lust for violence, and why a lot of mainstream remembrance efforts today end up exploiting this tragedy for nationalist-like agendas

I will say, even though it’s not filled with as many Insufferable White Boys as the ones found lurking in WWII forums, it’s war, so you still get your fair share of nationalist, white supremacist, imperialist, pro-war, sexist/misogynist pricks, so please do research with discretion and try to avoid these people (i.e. don’t even look at the comment sections on some websites) and watch out for those boasting about how “honourable” it is for boys to have joined up and died for their country at 15 and that there is something “glorious” to be had in war (because is the biggest lie men have invented for themselves and perpetuate the bs well into the 21st century unfortunately)

Some classic things I recommend reading/watching because they got me started on bits of my own research over time and one of them might be of some interest to you:

Testament of Youth, by Vera Brittain (Book)

This true memoir details how the war affected a young British university student and how the tragedies she witnessed led her to become a VAD nurse, feminist, and pacifist. If you are a more visual learner, it was made into a beautifully shot 2014 film (obviously with some inaccuracies and omitted details) and a more in depth BBC miniseries available for free on YouTube. You may also enjoy the books “Letters From a Lost Generation”, “Because You Died”, and “Vera Brittain and the First World War” which give even more information about the Brittains and the war written by the family’s historian

The Christmas Truce commercial everyone still cries over (video)

It’s a couple minutes long, perfectly sums up what draws me to keep studying the war and my love for learning about the unique changes in human connection during the war

All Quiet in the Western Front, by Erich Maria Remarque (Book)

Another classic example of anti-war literature a lot of people start out by reading from a German perspective. You can also watch the 1930 film adaptation of the book if you would like a visual (even if it has American actors)

They Shall Not Grow Old (Film)

AMAZING first hand accounts and original newly remastered footage from the First World War. It’s arguably neautral in its stance on various factors on the war, but it does a tremendous job showing what life was like at the front and giving voices to the soldiers that lived through it to share their stories.

Oh What a Lovely War! (Film)

Another solid (and entertaining) example of media showing high criticism for the war. This film was revolutionary for its time after roughly 50 years of societal silence about the consequences and negative impacts of WWI. It is incredibly condescending and an absolute anti-war gem

Great War Tommy: the British Soldier 1914-18 (Book)

If you’re a visual learner like me and want information about the kit of a British soldier and drill among other kit care details with LOTS of photos, this a GREAT book

British Uniforms and Equipment of the First World War (Book)

Like the above but has a VERY extensive library of photos for uniforms and equipment, and even shows niche patches and what some uniforms look like inside-out! It’s available for download through MLRS Books online

Valiant Hearts (Game)

From the French perspective. Very heartbreaking game about a French soldier produced in a very unique art style and has a wonderful soundtrack. Great if you like causal, story rich games

11:11 Memories Retold (Game)

This very artistic, stylised game tells the story of a Canadian photographer hired to take photos during the war as well as a German soldier looking for his son at the front. Again, superb soundtrack, and excellent if you love causal, story rich games

Shepard’s War, by James Campbell (Book)

A lovely compilation of original artwork and biographical details about E. H. Shepard during his time as an officer in WWI. If you don’t know, Shepard is the illustrator for Winnie the Pooh! Very intriguing to see his depictions of WWI soldiers as someone who was responsible for a childhood classic

Journey’s End, by R. C. Sherriff (Play)

This play tells the story of a trio of British officers on the frontline and how the effects of shellshock has greatly impacted one of the main characters. It was also made into a film in 2018 staring Asa Butterfield, Sam Claflin, and Paul Bettany

Not About Heroes, by Stephen MacDonald (Play)

A play which tells about the gay friendship between wartime poets and officers Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen

Blackadder: Blackadder Goes Forth (Show)

You might have grown up watching reruns of this show already, but in case you haven’t, it’s the fourth series of the BBC historical comedy show Blackadder and is about as condescending as Oh What a Lovely War, but much less Heavy, aside from the last episode that is. I’ve learned it’s kind of a staple in references made by some reenactment groups :P

YouTube also has TONS of WWI documentaries from every subject under the sun, ranging anywhere from 2 minutes to 2 hours. Obviously it will be a little harder to tell if the information given is without bias, misinformation, or has questionable undertones, but it’s usually a good way to teach yourself how to always be critical of any information you take in, and also a low-maitence way to keep learning. I find it’s nice to keep a balance between informative non-fiction and historical fiction when doing WWI research to keep variation in my study and also to test my ability to tell apart inaccuracies, or just to take a break from the crushing reality of it all!

In conclusion, the answer is jump right in! You’ll learn the ins and outs of WWI research as you go along! The more you learn, the more you’ll get the hang of it!

so a couple days ago I was on the bus going home with a few of my friends, and we were talking about what our hyperfixations are. now because I'm dumb lil shit I went off on a rant about how hyperfixations are an actual thing and not just the loose erm normal people use it as, and I started explaining the detaills of it and everything

then this guy we know was listening and eventually got bored ig (my friends have learned to put up w me cos i don't stop once i start talking about that kinda stuff) and butted in saying 'this whatever youre talking about is prob your hyperfixation' then one of my friends said 'no, hers is actually harry potter' (clearly neither of them listened to my rant) and the guy replied ' you know theyre making a new show for harry potter? ive always thought the books and everything were pretty basic, so idc about the show, but yk theres a black guy for snape or whoever'

I then proceeded to spend the rest of the 30-min-smth ride talking about the reason why a black guy was cast, how obvious the motive behind it is and how the twisted that motive is. I said how yeah, the hp books are basic, like how there was so much opportunity for representation, diversity, and it wasn't taken; all the ways she could have expanded the story, and interlock it with other factors to make it more than the overglorified love story she wrote it as; that also links with how disgusting it was that she made a trio of friends, that could have had so much fun platonic care and ruined it entirely by turning it into a cliché love triangle, and how awkward that she didn't realise the fact that she made James run after Lily for years, meaning he harassed lily, in public as well, and didn't care at all; how she gave all the characters very little depth, and didn't include any character development when there was ample space- she gave neville a bit more bravery, but what about the marauders' driving factor for their unnecessary bullying (which she could have done without, since she didn't even use its potential for plot furthering & development)? what about snape's trauma, yet also self-taught bigotry leading to the path he took along his life? what about the golden trio's continuous face in danger, how did that affect them, why did they befriend each other despite their built-in prejudices towards each other? what about dumbledore, why was he covered up as a saviour when he hurt so many people, almost every character even slightly mentioned in the book had been hurt by him, why? and what part did he play in voldemort's descent into dark magic, what part did he play in the war, both wars, in the aftermath of the wars, in the raising of harry? why was he dumped so unceremoniously on petunia's doorstep, without telling her properly that her sister died ( she hated that lily was a witch, she didn't hate lily so she would have liked to know) and why didn't he check in on harry, maybe save him from all the abuse, that he fucking knew was happening and didn't raise a finger to stop?

not to mention all the shit jk's done towards the trans community, oh how I bitched about her- the way sh'e's using her position to spread her hateful agenda, the fact that she's trying to get an in towards trump by defending him at every opportunity because she wants more power and effect over people just to continue teaching others why trans paeople are apparently so terrible, disgusting, unnatural, and want to corrupt all the young generations' minds (ik so many trans people and they are literally just as cool and amazing, if not more, than the other ppl I know- every other sane person thinks the way I do about this, so how far up her ass she pulled this bs from I do not know). I’m just so confused and angry at the channel/writers of the show, coz this is some real jump the shark bulllshit. Achcha khaasa toh sab chal raha tha and you just went and threw the whole plot down the drain outta fucking nowhere??? Literally what made them think this would work and be accepted? Also just what kinda trash zero continuity writing is this? Why have the 7 day challenge and have him confess on Day 2 and move on to this immediately???? Even if this plot had to come up (eventually), it coulda built up slowly by showing us Asha being cagey and weird and trying to get hold of Aman, who’s suddenly avoiding her and stuff; meanwhile Ishani is trying different stupid things until it culminated in the seduction routine and she’s rejected and then goes and finds out the truth about Malvika by the end of the week. This sudden BS with no warning whatsoever makes noooooooooo sense FOR ANY OF THESE CHARACTERS INVOLVED. The reason we still like Neil and Rahil is coz they’re the only characters who’ve maintained their consistency in this whole mess. Baaki sab toh na jaane kaunse alag hi trip pe hain. 🙄🙄🙄

Even Surbhi and Namit look real shellshocked and unhappy with the track and whatever the fuck their characters are doing, and are trying to play it off with “haha, the twists of Indian TV” and pained smiles in the interviews. 😕😕😕

i always found eremika very obvious. i was okay with it, but the last arc made it an incredible ship for me. i think lots of people forget that eren was an angsty 15 yo obsessed with war. of course he won't be into love shit. when does he realize his feelings for mikasa? after he learns the truth about the walls aka when he basically gives up on his ideals and focuses on saving his friends and fulfilling his duty. i mean, look at jean. he used to be all over mikasa at the start but when things get tough, he stops being all over her but lives his feelings inside. i mean, he dreams about having a family with mikasa, but he rarely shows affection towards her (except for the protective stuff). i think eremika could have been given more spotlight but it was very obvious it would be canon. i like their dynamics, wish we could see eren with his aaron yoghurt self a bit more lol

also, jeankasa SUCKS. my baby jean deserves to be the first choice. i think, MAYBE, eren might have mentioned mikasa during his speech with jean at the very end. tho never confirmed, i find it very plausible. ngl jean and pieck would be a bomb couple and i was so on board with it

Indeed, some of our most interesting insights into Diana come from dynamics the film has trouble finding enough time to fully explore: her complex relationship with her stern mother Queen Hippolyta; her bemused confusion over the bumbling Etta Candy; her compassion for shellshocked Charlie; her empathy for Chief; her love of everyday human things; her aforementioned admiration for Antiope. All of that takes a backseat each time the film returns, like clockwork, to the Diana/Steve dynamic. If that sounds like an exaggeration, consider this: We get not one, but three separate, water-adjacent scenes establishing their awkward but flirty banter—one of which takes place almost immediately after Antiope dies.

I seriously don’t blame Heinberg; this is all on Snyder and Fuchs. Heinberg has proven years ago he knows how to balance a full co-ed ensemble and write couples organically. This, meanwhile, was the same bs we’ve slogged thru in other Snyder works.

Why the Wizards and Celtics hate each other

They can barely explain it, but the answer is obvious.

WASHINGTON — It’s a simple question with a simple answer, and yet it revealed so much about the Celtics and Wizards. Why is it that these two teams always play like they’re jealous brothers wrestling for little reason?

“We don’t like them and they don’t like us,” Isaiah Thomas said after the Wizards’ Game 3 victory, punctuating the point with a smile and a shrug. “That’s just what it is.”

Like a relationship turning sour by the day, the Wizards and Celtics can’t even explain why they can’t stand the other. In one moment, they downplay the rift as a natural one between two teams trying to climb the East food chain. In another, they throw passive-aggressive jabs at each other, suggesting the other sinks to guerrilla tactics they must have the strength to ignore.

“We can’t fall into their game. Shoving, pushing, trash-talking,” Marcin Gortat said. “We’ve got to just sit there and be who we are,”

So why don’t they like each other anyway?

“I don’t know. I wish I knew. I wish I knew,” Bradley Beal said. He pauses.

“We’re similar in a lot of ways,” he continued. “They’re real passionate about themselves. They’re passionate about their team. We’re young. We’re two on-the-rise teams in the East. We know right now that one of us has to die, essentially.”

Facing their own mortality following a painful Game 2 defeat, the Wizards responded by talking a big game. They’re a proud bunch of woofers, forged by the arrogance of Paul Pierce and perfected by the no-BS hard shell of Markieff Morris. They talk the talk, and when they walk the walk, they talk the talk some more with language the FCC wouldn’t approve.

So while altering their scheme to deny Thomas the ball and make him work defensively were priorities, they weren’t nearly as important as rediscovering the fire within.

After a dreadful Game 2 he quickly tried to forget, Beal got off hot with seven quick points, including an offensive rebound on the first possession. The Wizards swarmed Thomas off dribble handoffs and screen-and-rolls, ignoring shooters spotting up to squeeze Thomas into a straightjacket.

They took turns posting Thomas up with glee early in the second quarter, and though Thomas held his own, the buckets the Wizards did score were symbolic of the big bully finally swatting away the gnat. Boston looked shellshocked and the Wizards rode a rabid home crowd to an easy victory.

But it did not serve the Wizards well when that take-no-prisoners attitude caused them to lose their cool. The most significant example came after second-year forward Kelly Oubre absorbed a blow to the face on a Kelly Olynyk screen. Enraged, Oubre sprinted after Olynyk and wound up for a two-handed shove just as Olynyk was seeking an official for refuge. That stunt cost Oubre his spot in this game and could cost him more in the coming days, which would further depleting a shaky bench.

“I don’t know what [Oubre] was doing,” Thomas said. “The screens we’ve been setting, especially in the frontcourt, for the most part I feel like they’ve been legal.”

Even the Wizards acknowledged that Oubre put the team in jeopardy.

“With his reaction, he has to do a better job than that,” John Wall said. “He’s important to our team. He’s an X-Factor. We told him, ‘We understand you get frustrated. There’s plenty of times throughout games that I want to do stuff. But I know how much I mean to the team.’ So I think it’s just a learning experience for him moving forward.”

Yet it’s hard to divorce the moment Oubre lost his cool from the Wizards’ very life force. Before the game, Oubre and Morris warmed up in white T-shirts with the phrase “Death Row D.C.” and a stick-figure drawing.

Morris gave the team that nickname in January as a homage to the famous 90s hip-hop record company, then assigned teammates alter egos based on the artists on the label. He printed out the T-shirts and passed them to teammates. Some, including Oubre, have been wearing them throughout the series.

What started as a silly joke has turned into an ethos that sustains them when the going gets tough. They wear their pride on their sleeves, flaunting to the world that they will keep it real, stomp on your throats, and let you know about it. Loudly. And if they’re failing to stay focused or dig deep when the going gets tough, it’s probably because they’ve stopped acting like the biggest bully in the room.

That puts them in direct conflict with a Celtics team that also doesn’t take crap from anyone and is standing in their way in their quest for precious relevancy behind the Cavaliers. Every game — every possession — becomes a battle for respect, recognition, and the right to say that they shut the other up and put them back in their irrelevant place.

These two teams are one in the same, as loathe as they want to admit it. They are the white-and-gold vs. black-and-blue dress debate, in NBA form. And as long as they’re fighting for their spot in the East ladder, they’ll keep snarling at each other, insisting that there’s nothing unusual about the other that’s causing this behavior when they all know there is.

That’s why they don’t like each other.
