Clade of the Day: Physallophyta

Welcome to Clade of the Day, where we cover different groups of organisms on Sagan 4. Today's clade is the division Physallophyta, also known as the bubble flora.

Bubbleflora are one of the classic purple flora groups on Sagan 4 and formed some of the planet's earliest trees. Originating as kelp-like purple seaweed, they unlocked the ability to maintain flotation in air using hydrogen, which allowed them to reach larger sizes quickly and even enter the sky. Some species also weaponized it to burn their predators.

Though once giants, today, bubbleflora are only represented by a basal offshoot that's only distantly related to the megaflora of times long past--as true bubbletrees were wiped out by the ice comet impact event of the end-Somanian. 66 bubbleflora species are recorded on the wiki, but only 12 are extant, all descended from a single river-dwelling bubbleweed.

I have been keeping an eye on this since I last posted, and the excitement in the reblogs and tags is contagious. Team Trees was 1.2 million away three days ago- as of today they are less than 180k away (19,820,169 as of posting this). It is only $1 to plant a tree through them, and I have watched so many folks here go forth and do so, and it’s been amazing to watch the little counter climb.

I wanted to share some of the other things I have learned from reblogs-

You can use Sheetz rewards to purchase #TeamTree trees. 200 points per tree.

The search engine Ecosia.org uses its profits to plant trees. It’s site counter reports that folks using it to search have generated enough profit to plant 77 million trees (as of this posting).

The site also has an oddly soothing counter that goes up in real time if you want to watch.

This is something you can participate in for free, and continue to participate in after the #TeamTrees drive is ended. It’s an extension for Chrome which replaces the page you normally get when you open a new tab, as well as redirects from the browser search bar at the top of every page.

Bubblytree.com is currently working on planting 1 million trees by 2025. They are doing this through folks watching 50-second ads they call “sustainable and socially responsible.”

I have reached out to them to find out what criteria they are using to determine “socially responsible” because I’m not sure what they mean by that.

After the #TeamTrees drive is ended, you can still donate to help plant trees by directly donating to Trees for the Future at Trees.org.

Trees for the Future is the NPO that BubblyTree forwards their ad revenue to, so if you don’t want to watch ads you can just donate directly.

With the rising number of homelessness in the UK, the government has tried to put a halt to the trend with a spending budget. However, it seems that the number is still rising.

The policies focus on housing and employment which include providing accommodation, training, education and employment opportunities. These can alleviate the situation from some perspectives. However, more actions can be done to tackle the problem. My suggestions are as follows.

In many cities like Brighton, part of the homelessness are immigrants from other countries. There are also many non-local homelessness in Brighton. Accommodation would never be enough with the influx of homelessness. Non-local homelessness should be another focus in tackling homelessness.

Furthermore, it is always more effective to prevent rather than to tackle. More policies and education should focus on social problems like domestic violence, drug abuse, alcohol addition and family support to decrease the number of youth homelessness. This little bubble, the brainchild of Pierre Stephane Dumas, not only looks great, but it serves as the perfect compromise. For those who like to sleep under the stars but would rather not be exposed to everything that Mother Nature might throw at them, here's the BubbleTree.

The BubbleTree is a prefab cabin with a difference – it's inflatable. A bit like an air mattress, but much bigger, and decked out with beds, chairs and occasionally wooden floors. It's inflated and keep rigid using a silent pump and an airlocking door.

French designer Dumas says he was inspired to create the tents because 'having a night under the stars or seeing the sun rise and set is not something that many people experience anymore. A normal tent or camper van means people miss out on these things.'

There are several variations on the theme: a completely transparent bubble called the CristalBubble, a more modest version, with see-through roof and concealing walls, called Cocooning; and a suite called the Bubble Lodge. (And just in case you're wondering, there is also a bubble tent that can be suspended in trees – which is how this little igloo got its name.)

Unfortunately, BubbleTrees don't come cheap. If you'd like to stay in one (in locations across France), the price is about $600 a night. If you'd prefer to buy your own, the price tag is about $12,000. RM
