Clade of the Day: Siderobiota

Welcome to Clade of the Day, where we cover different groups of organisms on the collaborative project Sagan 4. Today's clade is the kingdom Siderobiota, which includes the iron flora and the iron fauna.

Siderobiota is among the few kingdoms of organisms on Sagan 4 to produce both fauna and flora. They are unique for how they use iron--in that they oxidize it as part of their respiration, yet they can only obtain it from their diet. Floral species exist in soils as macroscopic counterparts to iron-oxidizing bacteria; fauna are typically armored, using excess iron in their exoskeletons.

Among the iron flora is the largest single, non-colonial organism recorded on Sagan 4, the orbit voltflora.

98 species are recorded. Siderobiota reached its peak diversity before the snowball event. In its aftermath, the few lineages that survived suffered heavy losses as their native continent, Barlowe, sank until all that was left were a few islands formed from mountain peaks. Most living iron fauna are parasites, surviving the sinking of their home continent by obtaining all the iron they need from blood.

Warning(s): This is a modern AU, Coriolanus and Lucy Gray are dating, the Covey is referred to as a legitimate family, before any of you start complaining, note that Barb Azure is canonically apart of the LGBTQ+ community. I'm sorry - the Covey are hard to personify other than Lucy Gray and Maude Ivory :'). I tried my best with the other three.

Coriolanus fidgets nervously as he enters the daunting and spacious shopping mall he entered. Today he was going to be spending Christmas Eve with his girlfriend and her family for the first time, and Tigris said it would be a good idea to get them all gifts. Obviously he met the rest of the Covey household, but something as serious as Christmas Eve required certain preparations.  

He looked at his list scanning his eyes over the list of people he needed to get gifts for.  

Gift List:  - Lucy Gray  - Maude Ivory  - Barb Azure  - Tam Amber  - Clerk Carmine 

Coriolanus deadpans. He had a long way to go. 

Walking from store to store, he finally finds a store that he thinks Lucy Gray will like something from – deciding to start from the top of the list. Alas, nothing was in the store, none of the bright ornaments and baubles seemed to be of anything the colorful girl would like.  

Sighing, he moves on, before a paperweight glass piano studded with sparkling pearls catches his eye. The blond man smiles, knowing the charismatic ivory loving girl would be ecstatic over the small thing.  

Eyes trailing back to Lucy Gray’s name, he sees a guitar store across the mall, just on the other side of the hallway, making his way inside. 

But again, there was nothing that seemed to be worthy of Lucy Gray’s attention. But, on the rack, Coriolanus saw a bass pick with the pride flag on it, picking it up, knowing Barb Azure would accept it happily. As shy as the woman seemed, Coriolanus knew she was coming out of her shell more often, talking about the girl she was seeing with a small grin on her face. 

As one can expect, he didn’t have much luck in the other stores, in pursuit of a gift for his lover. In a hat store, he found a feathered and classy hat for Tam Amber, as well as a quality (but expensive) pack of rosin and a tuner for Clerk Carmine’s fiddle, but to no avail did he find anything for the woman that stole his heart. 

Heart sinking, anxiety squeezed his heart, what Snow, no- what boyfriend couldn’t find a gift for his own girlfriend?!  

Seeing a jewelry shop just around the corner, he entered, deciding that if he couldn’t find anything in here, he’d just give up.  

The door opened with a jingle, a woman looking up from behind the counter and smiling warmly before noticing the bags in his hands.  

“Christmas present shopping?” she asks, tilting her head slowly. 

Coriolanus scratches the back of his neck sheepishly before agreeing with the statement. “Yeah...” 

“Cutting it a little close, are we?” she chuckled, before motioning him closer. “I have a few that I’ve been keeping off display for customers like you.” 

She shows him a selection of necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings, and even a few watches, but his eyes settle on a pair of earrings with bejeweled doves dangling from each of them, the cool white light of the store reflecting off of them, making the gems reflect all sorts of colors. 

It was poetic in a way, it reminded him of something Lucy Gray had said to him. 

“You're mine and I'm yours. It's written in the stars.” 

The stars, shining brightly in the sky, reminded him so much of her, just as the gorgeous pair of earrings did.  

“I’ll take these.” he said, pointing to the dove earrings.

Clade of the Day: Crustaphyta

Welcome to Clade of the Day, where we cover different groups of organisms on the collaborative project Sagan 4. Today's clade is the kingdom Crustaphyta, which includes crusts, jorns, and their relatives.

Most species in this lineage are small and tough, making use of a chitinous shell or exoskeleton to protect them from most predators. This is why many of them form "crusts". However, yet more species are much larger, existing as succulent-like organisms adapted to life in deserts.

This group is by and large extant with few extinct variants. 24 entries are recorded on the wiki. Like many other obscure flora lineages, crusts and jorns are generally restricted to certain climates, mostly those with a lot of sand or rock. There are exceptions, however.

IT'S NATIONAL FOSSIL DAY IN THE US 💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥 here's my favorite. it's name is Borealopelta and was found in Alberta. It's the only known one in it's species (borealopelta markmitchelli) (named after one of the people who helped prepare it) (it took him Seven Thousand Hours / 5 and a half years), and took 14 days to excavate out of its site. and yes it's in the ankylosaur clade if u thought it looked like one that's because it is

It's one of the best, if not THE best, preserved dinosaur fossils currently known . They found it's ORGANS preserved inside. It's ORGANS !!!!! It's rare for soft tissue to survive fossilization, so this has always been really really super duper cool for me and I like it a lot and it makes me very happy. I recommend looking into + at it on your own time because it's absolutely fascinating. it really just looks like an animal that went to sleep

The theory as to why it's so well preserved is that it likely died at or near the sea, sunk down to the floor and was quickly buried under the sand. Instead of being squished by layers and layers of sediment and rock, water carried in minerals and sort of made an Internal Rock Cast. They also discovered from studying the scales that it was likely an earthy reddish-orange tone . Nice for camouflage :-)

I keep seeing people get this twisted, and it's driving me nuts. But I've also never actually talked about it in detail, so that's my fault. So to clear some fiddly terminology Lore up:

"Spacer" in RttS is a generic term for a person living off of a planet. "Tailed spacers" are a clade of genetically modified humans designed for microgravity labor. "Tailers" is a nickname for tailed spacers. "Spacer" is not a nickname for them, it would be like referring to a Frenchman as a "man" for short... because yeah, not false, but that's not the important part of the term. The politically correct name for tailed spacers is rather vague— it's a direct result of their historical clade name ("Simians" or "Simian spacers") being considered a slur in modern day. Tailed spacers are hardly the only GMH or spacers with tails, but the portmanteau "tailer" specifically refers to them in English.

Though, the term "spacer" itself is extremely relative. Anglophones on Earth use it to refer to anyone who lives off of Earth. Anglophones on Mars use it to refer to people who live on moons and in space stations. Anglophones on Luna and other moons use it to refer to people living in space stations. Anglophones living in space stations... are one of the only groups to self identify as spacers. So folks from Nexus Jovia like Talita, Idrisah, and Gillie would consider themselves spacers.
