Today's #stretchandsmash at @crossfitatlanta was all about smashing, stretching and strengthening the muscles that connect to and control the very mobile shoulder/scapulae joint. We worked on learning the motor control of all those muscle to learn how to properly fix our shoulder blades on our back. In physics, Newton's 3rd Law says "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction." In Alignment based #yoga we call it "Balanced Action". My mother always told me, "Too much of anything, even a good thing, can become a bad thing". Science, yoga and my mama....the three major resources and references in my life. I'm a Libra ♎️so my whole life's endeavor has been about finding balance. There are always two forces or energies at play...the yin/yang ☯️, inhale/exhale, masculine/feminine 🚻, discipline/freedom, strength/flexibility. In yoga it's about ENGAEMENT/EXPANSION, EFFORT/EASE, MUSCULAR/ORGANIC ENERGY. Balanced Action creates and optimal amount of both STABILITY and FREEDOM of movement in the body so energy can flow freely. Off the mat, Balanced actions in our life helps us to move and express ourselves freely and safely as we flow through life. Thank you to the 4 ladies that joined me this morning at my 9:30 am SLOW Flow class at @sacredthreadyoga O4W. One lady left the class saying "Wow, that felt like a workshop. You should really think about doing a workshop!" I receive that planted seed sistren. 3 more opportunities to practice with me this week. We have turned the 9:30 am time slot on Mondays and Wednesdays at Sacred Thread Yoga O4W into your weekly meetings where we talk Alignment and Actions. Join us for the next 11 weeks where our classes will be dedicated to breaking down and teaching specific Alignment Principles and/or Key Actions that will help unpack and deepen your understanding of a multitude of poses. Each week will be dedicated to a different principle/action and we will travel week by week from feet through the body all the way to the skull. At the end of the 11 weeks you will have an understanding and an infrastructure on how to align yourself in any yoga pose to help find the fullest expansion and expression of that pose. Word of the Day: BEGIN People always ask me, "How do you stay so disciple in your yoga practice and fitness routine? How do you CONTINUE to stay so CONSISTENT?" My answer: the key to CONTINUING is to BEGIN...AGAIN, and AGAIN and AGAIN. Each day I step on the mat or into a gym I feel like I am just BEGINing AGAIN. And thats because I approach it with a BEGINNERS MIND and a STUDENTS HEART. That way there is always something new to learn, it hopefully never gets boring, and you're excited to BEGIN AGAIN, the next day. So don't worry about CONTINUING, just keep BEGINING. "NOW...BEGINS....the exposition of #yoga" ~ Yoga Sutra of Pantajali 1.1 At this time of the year so many people are focusing on new starts, new intentions and new goals. They are deciding on the 1st day of the 1st week of the 1st month of 2017 that NOW is the time to BEGIN. Begin to eat healthy, get back in shape, start practicing yoga, start a budget etc etc. The commitment to BEGIN is commendable, but I am also encouraged that NOW doesn't have to be at the start of a new year, that NOW can be any moment in time that YOU CHOOSE it to be. That NOW can be at the start of a NEW BREATH, and that each moment is an opportunity to be your NOW, your moment to BEGIN or BEGIN AGAIN....and again and again if that what it takes. I want to say thank you to the 13 souls this morning that made my 9:30 am {Slow} Flow class at @sacredthreadyoga O4W their NOW. We worked on The principle of "Set The Doundation" grounding trough our feet, legs and hands, and "Opening to GRACE" aligning and finding length through our spine. We RECONNECTED to the foundational pose #tadasana aka #mountainpose over and over again, so we could RECREATE the actions in other poses and shapes. 2 more opportunities to practice with me this week. I would be honored if you made either of them your NOW moment. The Bhagavad Gita says "Yoga is the journey of the self, through the Self, to the SELF." Ever so often I get the time in my day to go on an adventure, to explore and chart the landscape of my body. I call it "Body Mapping". Each time I learn something different about my body and myself. I find places and muscles that I read about in books and seen in videos, and discover a treasure💰.....a new awareness of not only the muscle and where exactly it's located but how it maybe either strong💪🏾 or weak👎🏾, and the impact it has on my alignment. Today in the journey to find more #hamstring length I discovered exactly where my #pectineus muscle is. It's a small muscle but has huge impact as to how it helps to integrate and draw the thigh bone toward my midline. I discovered that my left pectineus is over stretched and weak. I have to engage that one more than my right to strengthen it, and when I do......POW💥, it changes the game for my #forwardfolds. This exploration in my body has enlightened the exploration of my mind. I realized that although I have a weak left pectineus, I have STRONG mental stories (rackets) that I tell myself, that are so strong and so negative that they pull me OUT of alignment and cloud my judgement of myself. There is what happened, then the story I tell myself about what happened. What happened is in the past, but I keep carrying around MY STORY about it, and that has a huge impact on my mental alignment. I have to let go and clear those negative through meditation. My question then to you is "How well do you KNOW yourself?" How often do you spend time with yourself, exploring the deep and hidden parts of your body and mind? Take some time to shine a light 🔦💡🕯, you might be surprised at the treasures you may find! Big shout to my mentor @rockyheron for the lesson in embodying anatomy and for the GREAT PNF Hanumanasana drills. Might play with adding blanket drills to then.
