Bugtober day 6: Mighty Pebble

Headcanons for my boy Hoaxe :)

He's warm! He's a fire mage of course he's warm. He also generally smells like smoke

He's very intelligent linguistically and can pick up new languages and words no problem. Inspired by the fact that his backstory made it seem like he learned Bugnish very quickly and he was also able to tell where the Sapling was without a Roach translator

Extension of the above: he was able to pick up some words of the written Giant language in his youth. That's how he knew how to operate the stove. He found the owner's manual lol

One more language detail! Thick-headed flies like him are generally good at languages since they need to quickly and effectively blend in with bugs they parasitize.

Basically canon with his healing items of choice but he loves junk food!!! He's like this 'cause he grew up eating poison in the Giant's Lair and if his stomach's not hurting then he assumes something's wrong

Speaking of the Giant’s Lair! He's had many run-ins with the Omega, so much so that if the Omega saw him it would recognize him

He knows how to fight Dead Landers because Omega pitted him against so many. He can't take on a hoard but he can take on one or two

When he's angry, he sparks like a lighter, typically from his fingers but if he's speaking it'll come from his mouthparts. When he had the crown, his amplified power meant that his subjects had to keep him calm or he'd be accidentally conjuring fireballs instead of sparks.

He doesn't really know that communal eating is a thing. When he was in the Dead Lands he could only eat by himself in safety, when he was in the Wasp Kingdom the Wasps were so mean he had to sneak food and eat it in his room, and when he was king, he had to eat alone to hide his fly mouthparts anyway.

The trash outside Master Slice's kitchen was the best food he ever had. He was looking forward to forcing Master Slice to be the royal chef when he took over Bugaria

His broken wing means that one of his halteres is exposed. Wearing a cloak helps somewhat, but without the cloak, it can get super sensitive (sometimes to the point of pain) and anything more than a slight breeze can cause balance issues for him.

Hoaxe's species parasitizes other bugs as larvae. He couldn't do that in the Giant's Lair, so he has some health issues as a result. he's smaller, weaker, and less dexterous than others of his species and he retains some larval habits, like preferring dark, cramped spaces and eating like a black hole.

Both his altered development and the less-than-ideal environments he was raised in led him to be bad at empathizing and recognizing social cues. Not what made him evil, but it did impact his life.

He's got fly vision. He can see almost 360 degrees around himself, though not perfectly, so he'll move his head to focus on something or to indicate that he's listening to someone. But this made a fun challenge for the Wasps who wanted to catch him off guard. This is also how he could dodge Maki at the beginning of chapter 5.

Day (technically 19 but) 21: Berry

(I know I accidentally skipped this one in the last post I am sorry. Anyway this is the result of me watching too many JimmyHere YLYL streams while drawing)

Day 22: Fungal

(Imma be honest. I didn't get this line on my first playthrough, so when I did on my second I about broke down crying. Fate has smiled upon them,,, ;v;)

Day 23: Flight

"We can fly as high as our hearts wish to! Soar to UNSEEN HEIGHTS!"

(The fact that Kabbu is terrified of heights but loves bounceshrooms is very underrated imo. I think he wants to overcome his fear someday and maybe learn how to fly on his own...)

Day 24: Plant Enchanter

(What did you guys name your Chompys? I named mine Amarylis, intentionally spelt wrong due to character limits. I just think it's a pretty word :>)

Day 25: Lost

"Everyone left on the rescue ferry...but I chose to stay. There's such a soothing beat… How could I leave this place behind? I've gotta find where it comes from...I've...gotta..."

(You ever wonder what happened to the bug who left that note on the Peacock Spider's island? I mean, they're obviously dead, but...I still wonder.)

Day 26: Alternate Universe

(You ever make an AU based on a single line of dialogue & some concept art that gets stuck in your brain and refuses to leave? Yeah, that's what this AU is. The placeholder title is 'The Upcoming Storm', and is an answer to two questions: What if the Roaches followed through with their plans for a Thunder cordyceps? And what if one of Leif's ancestors decided to look into their disappearance?

So this is Cerice, their ridiculously energetic lesbian daughter [who they don't know is their daughter yet; she doesn't remember that they're her parent either] and host of the Thunder cordyceps! Don't worry, Grandpa and Muze still exist - Grandpa's her son. However, Team Snakemouth is split into two teams - Team Snake and Team Mothden - but they still work together. I might make a separate post abt it if anyone wants me to ^^)

(I am a very firm believer in Poisoned Leif supremacy. Sorry Poisoned Vi and Kabbu, smashing bosses over the head with glaciers is just so viscerally satisfying)

(I really wish they elaborated more on Vi deciding to become an explorer after her first festival! It's a very cute motivation & had a lotta story potential ;^;)

(Hoaxe is a fun final boss but god DAMN did he kick my ass a hundred times over. It's a good thing I decided to max my rank and stock up on Queen's Dinners, Berry Smoothies & Miracle Shakes the 5th time around)

BUG FABLES HEADCANONS AAAAAAAAA🦅🦅🦅💥💥💥 (a LOT of Team Mothiva because if it wasn’t so painfully obvious by now I think they are very awesome)

• Leif’s always been rather inexpressive, but especially so after the whole. Dying thing. His shell was essentially frozen (so to speak) in place, so expressions are hard now if not downright painful to make

• Kabbu looks so incredibly goofy underneath his helmet. It was a common practice in the North to wear armor and such to make yourself look more Intimidating™️

• ascends from the clouds with the headcanon I can never and will never shut up about zzasp…….is trans. cue the round of applause. cue the screaming fans. People are marveling. People in the stands are pissing and shitting and passing out they’re cheering so hard. Because they know. They know that I’m right and—look alright I talk about this SO often but it’s the perfect storm of a headcanon. character I like? Character I like who is my favorite species of bug? character has the physical characteristics of a woman despite being referred to as a man? tailor made for a transmasc wasp lover

• Mothiva has been in many controversies. Zasp and his 70 alternative mothiva stan accounts on the termanet were always there to back her up

• Speaking of those two’s relationship: Zasp is the definition of “I can fix her” except he actually probably could fix her if he just was a bit more assertive with her. there’s a kind moth in there somewhere. deep down. very deep down.

• Elizant I wasn’t as perfect as everyone remembers!! She wasn’t BAD by any means but she’s definitely looked at with rose tinted glasses. She had no malicious intent but she would be rather careless with her search for the everlasting sapling (oh someone died when looking for it? that’s too bad. anyway)

• Leif was wayyy more weak after waking up in snakemouth than he’d let on. His body was pretty atrophied after being trapped in a web for so long and it took him a long time to regain his strength, even with his magic

• Zasp is either the worst singer imaginable or the best. There will never be an in between. I like both ideas, either he’s outperforming mothiva at her own shows or making a fool of himself

• a lot of our phrases carry over to bugnish that, to them, don’t really make logical sense. “like moths to a flame” “why would we run into a flame kabbu” “I. I actually don’t know, I heard someone say it one time. I don’t actually know what it means”

• Vi is SUCH a bad influence on Tod don’t let her around him. Leif tries to limit their direct interactions because how dare you promote violence to The Child.

• Even with Leif’s attempts to be a good influence, Tod is still absolutely determined to become an explorer and has taken up the not so great habit of throwing his toy ball at people as his own little weapon

• Tod also DESPERATELY wants his own beemerang. ADBP. whatever. He calls it a beemerang. Hawk promised he’d get one for him when he was older and more able to handle one, but who knows if that’s true or not?

• Leif’s family (more specifically grandpa) are aware that Leif isn’t telling the full story but they just go along with it to not cause trouble. Like yeah there’s no way in hell you’re my brother but whatever man go ahead you’re a part of the family now I won’t ask questions

• And even if they did ask questions he would NOT answer because that is a one way ticket to getting quarantined for the rest of his life. At least he thinks that’s what happens. Treatments for cordyceps have been developed while he was in snakemouth, but he doesn’t know that and just assumes the fate is the same as when he was young (aka being shunned from the rest of society forever and ever)

• Zasp was from the north near the deadlands, but escaped to the wasp kingdom pretty early on for a better life. Turns out the wasp kingdom was just as bad, he can’t catch a break

• Queen Vanessa II was not at all respected before the whole wasp king debacle. It was the opposite case of Elizant II, instead of being more aggressive than the previous queen she was much more of a pacifist, which didn’t sit well with the people considering they were in the midst of a ton of wars that she was doing a terrible job at fixing. “Our queen your people are killing the other wasps, you need to do something, this is a full on genocide” “idk what to to do, I told them to stop but they didn’t listen :( “

• Many queens of different species share the same hives. How they decided on the official queen of the greater kingdom? Confidential information, but rumors have gone around saying it was via a game of rock paper scissors. There are also rumors that all of the queens are all secretly dating each other so who knows what’s true and what’s not

• speakin of gay queens. Elizant II is, alas, a lesbian. I say alas because it’s sorta her job as Queen to get knocked up and keep the population going so she doesn’t have much choice in the matter. Not all bad though because she gets to have a Secret Love Affair with Zaryant. The sole reason I have this headcanon is that a few weeks ago I snapped awake with the thought “they might be gay-ants” in my head and if I did not plan a plot around that immediately I wouldn’t be able to go back to sleep

• domestic silk moths are rare to the point of near extinction. Turns out that being a species reliant on and bred by the giants to the point of losing all survival instincts isn’t great when the giants disappear. Most of them died out even after the day of awakening due to that lingering lack of survival skills, but a few managed to survive with great difficulty

• Mothiva is one of the few domestic silk moths left, something which sounds depressing (and is) but she’s awfully good at spinning it into something enthralling. Oooh look at me look I’m one of the last of my kind, I’m a limited edition moth, come and get me while I’m still here teehee

• ^ SHE IS SERIOUSLY SO MESSED UP BECAUSE OF IT THOUGH. Since most bugs lost their flight after the day of awakening it no longer really matters that her kind can’t fly, but Oh Boy does centuries of domestication do something to you. She had a lot of trouble walking at first, and even once she managed to get that down it hurt like hell. How does she manage to twirl around on stage? with great difficulty. she would greatly benefit from Any sort of mobility aid but “nooo i can’t be seen as weak nooooo” (MOTHIVA STOOOOP PLEASE TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF)

• that is also a point of contention when it comes to her and Zasp’s relationship. You’re one of the only ones of your kind left and you’re just gonna run off with some random wasp? Unsurprisingly the public is Extremely parasocial when it comes to her, especially her relationships. and Zasp is just a neat little bundle of everything that the media thinks she should Not Be Dating. You’re dating your bodyguard? Who’s not even your own species? Who’s a wasp of all things? A dangerous creature with a dagger attached to his ass that can stab you at any moment? You sure about that?

• speaking of giving bugs chronic pain! Leif is Constantly in pain because fungi are weak against ice and. well. he is a fungus with ice powers so that goes about as well as one could expect. It does more than just make him in pain all the time but I won’t go into it all here because that is what my evil ao3 account is for

• Muse was a singer alongside being an explorer. Not pop idol singer like Mothiva, just doin it for fun. Although many of her songs became incredibly bleak after the whole. husband killed by spider thing.

• to his absolute horror, Leif is somewhat reminded of himself and Muse in Zasp and Mothiva. Awkward dude infatuated with a feisty moth who kicks things? been there done that. Not that he would ever admit to thinking that because he…maybe doesn’t hate, but certainly does not like Mothiva and is always praying for their breakup (not gonna happen Leif I’m sorry 😞)

• Vi’s repressed Fr*nch accent occasionally slips out. She is mocked relentlessly by Leif every time it happens

• Kina’s adopted. She is the only one unaware of this. I have no reason for this headcanon other than that I like the thought of her being like “ugh I can’t believe my bro took in some stray from the street 😒😒😒😒” girl you Are the stray from the street

that’s all I can remember off the top of my head but there are probably many more i am sooo normal about the bugs

NOPE NOPE NOPE I JUST REMEMBERED ONE MORE. there haven’t been many instances of bees doing the fabled Bee Ball (swarming an intruder and baking them alive) because they aren’t the specific species who do it, but wasp children are often told horror stories of the Bee Ball. it’s colloquially known as Bee Fever because of the whole baking alive thing and has become a bit of a folktale. Most wasps/hornets know they aren’t at much of a risk but many have nightmares of being the victim of a Bee Ball

Bug Fables OC Tournament Round 1

Lote is a wasp living in the Wasp Kingdom. Ever since he was young, he loved sailing and anything that had to do with water thanks to his father, who oftentimes took Lote with him on fishing trips and exploration trips. This is what eventually led to Lote joining the Wasp Army, specifically the navy. Thanks to his sailing experience and quick strategic thinking, Lote rose up the ranks easily until he became a naval commander.

Not long after his promotion, Hoaxe got into power and took over the whole kingdom. During Hoaxes rule, Lote kept his position and went on to carry many naval missions, most successful earning him even the king's respect.

However it didn't take long until Lote got into an accident while fighting on Metal lake that left Lote injured. While he recovered, he was left with a disability that left him much less mobile, forcing him to give up his position as head of the navy.

After this incident, Lote started to work more on the sidelines, being forgotten by most due to Hoaxes influence. This lasted until the events of the Everlasting sapling and the fall of Hoaxes rule.

With the end of Hoaxes rule and the return of Queen Vanesa II., Lote gave up his position in the Army completely, instead choosing to help others like him with recovering along with helping with repairs in the Wasp Kingdom.

Hessi (she/her) from @flame-shadow

Hessi is a friendly scientist who loves pursuing her passions and encouraging others to do so too! She works in a lab with other creative bugs as they explore the world around them and find ways to make changes and improvements. Hessi is good with machines and is currently working on safe means of flight for flightless bugs (she's trying to build jetpacks).

When she's not in the lab, she's hanging out with her friends and/or partners. Maybe going on a hike or to a new restaurant in the nearby town or just chillin' and chattin' in her room late into the night.

She cares a lot in so many ways and will step in to defend bugs who are being mistreated or stand up for those who can't make themselves heard. She doesn't like resorting to violence, but she will if she absolutely has to. Luckily, it rarely comes to that.

Spoilers for Bug Fables: the Everlasting Sapling. All chapters, including Leif's Request. Seriously, go play that game if you have the chance, it's absolute perfection, especially if you like Paper Mario.

So there's this guy, Leif, from the main cast. The Venomoth with ice powers that turns out to actually be a parasitic fungus, forcibly piloting Leif's corpse as a result of an experiment by the roaches in order to mimic the sapling's power.

Anyway, what I'm trying to get to here is they're absolutely broken (yes I'm using they/them, my headcanon is Leif is non-binary, feel free to catch these hands if you disagree). Especially if you stack all the poison medals.

I beat most of the endgame/postgame bosses, including The Everlasting King, TANGYBUG and Team Maki with nothing but poison Leif, and it was marvelous.

Here's what I did to make my game-breaking Venomoth of death:

Remember that exploiting the Bank of Bugaria makes the 100+ Berry paywalls for most of these items not as outrageous.

Before The Everlasting King:

Purchase a Heart Berry and a Bond Berry from the Berry Salesman for 100 Berries each after starting Chapter 3.

Steal a Bond Berry from the Bandit Hideout's kitchen

Complete all bounties for another Bond Berry

Claim the Heart Berry rewards for finishing the Lost Item sidequest, getting 25 points in Whack-A-Worm, making 50 discoveries (3 berries total)

Purchase a Super Pepper from the Berry Salesman for 150 Berries after starting Chapter 6.

Immediately after entering the Giant's Lair, backtrack to the Berry Salesman and buy an Iron Seed for 180 Berries.

After TEK:

Complete the Confidential sidequest, Leif being on steroids makes this much easier. Feed them the Iron Seed and Super Pepper you get as rewards.

Purchase all songs from Samira for another Heart Berry.

Finish the Loose Ends sidequest for one last Heart Berry.

Go back to the Giant's Lair to complete the A New Hope sidequest, claim the Bond Berry.

If you did everything correctly, at the maxium rank of 27, Leif should have: A minimum of 12 HP (14 after TEK) 3 ATK (4 if in front of the party, 4/5 after TEK) 1 DEF (2 after TEK)

Now, for the medals:

Before TEK:

Grab the first Poison Defender medal in Snakemouth Den (do it in your first visit, otherwise you won't be able to get it until halfway through Chapter 4)

Lose the festival's eating competition on purpose to get the Weak Stomach medal for free.

Buy 2 Poison Attacker medals from Shades in the Tavern, after starting Chapters 3 and 5 for 5 Crystal Berries each.

Buy the other Poison Defender medal from Shades for 4 Crystal Berries.

Defeat The Beast with the Hard Mode medal equipped to get the Reverse Toxin medal for free from Artis, or purchase it from the traveling caravan for 30 berries if you did it on easy mode.

Find the Eternal Venom medal in the Ice Puzzle in the Wild Swamplands.

Complete the Help me Get it Back! sidequest for the Leaf Cloak.

At the beginning of Chapter 3, buy the Status Booster medal for 3 Crystal Berries from Shades.

Beat Wave 40 of the Cave of Trials for a TP Saver medal,

Beat the Broodmother in Hard Mode for a Miracle Matter medal, or buy it for 30 berries on easy mode.

There's some other things you should do if you want the ultimate Leif, more notably:

Complete Leif's Request to unlock Ice Rain.

Buy healing items that also raise your attack, such as Spicy Fries.

Now, if you equip every medal on our precious little blue thing, the following should happen to Leif:

Will instantly get poisoned when fed.

Will get +2 attack when poisoned

Will get +2 defense when poisoned

Will get healed instead of damaged by poison

Will never heal from the poison status naturally

Will be less likely to be targeted by enemies

Will have a higher chance of freezing enemies

Their attacks will cost 1 TP less

If knocked out, will instantly revive in 2 turns

Using Ice Rain under these conditions, with Leif in the front of the party and under the effects of Spicy Fries allows you to nuke your enemies with up to 28 (32 if they're weak to ice) damage in one turn. And that's not including Turn Relay.

Now, this might not seem like a lot, but consider Bug Fables uses very small numbers for everything, similarly to Paper Mario.

Of course, this isn't everything you can do. If you level up your medal points enough, you can also try some setup strategies that require a few extra turns but can make Leif deal upwards of 60 damage with one Ice Rain, such as Strong Start + Hard Charge + Enfeeble/Deep Taunt, or even Berserker if you want to conserve your TP for healing with Vi instead of using Ice Rain nukes. But that's up to you to decide, since there's dozens of ways to mess with the Poison Leif strategy.

we should learn how to mod bug fables just because we really want there to be a mod that adds an audience to battles like ttyd has. mostly we think it would be very fun and cool if everlasting king could actually do the shadow queen thing and like absorb people when he heals
