This week, I was asked to wander around the buildings at work and take pictures of indoor windows as research for an upcoming photo project. I think some of them are pretty neat. In any case, it was probably the most relaxing couple of work hours I’ve ever had.

In the months that followed, the Harrington household witnessed an unprecedented flurry of activity. The once-quiet farm was now a hive of industry, with workers toiling tirelessly. Most of these laborers were brought in through the Coombes family's connections, a fact that weighed heavily on Eddy's mind. While he contributed what he could, it became increasingly apparent that the scope of the project exceeded what he initially expected.

From dawn until dusk, workers hammered, sawed, and excavated, transforming Eddy's land. Barns were hoisted, relocated, and reconfigured.

A grand wooden arch was erected at the farm's entrance, rustic and imposing, crowned by the massive horns of a longhorn bull. Yet, even this striking arch seemed insignificant compared to the towering edifice that was taking shape on his property.

Eddy's beloved garden found a new home to the left of the house, near the well, while the outhouse was shifted to the right. Piece by piece, the familiar landmarks of his farm were shuffled aside to make room for the looming mansion.

The newly constructed farmhouse, coated in a vibrant shade of red, featured white-painted woodwork adorned with ornate arches.

Daniel and all his contractors insisted it was indeed a Farmhouse but Eddy has grown skeptical.

By mid-autumn, the towering mansion stood as a testament to the whirlwind of change that had swept over the land. In just a few short months, nearly everything had been altered. This new house was a colossus compared to the one Eddy had lovingly crafted with his own hands and everything he had built has been moved and pushed aside.

The reality of what exactly the term "little" meant in the context of his dealings with Daniel was dawning on him, Eddy knew Daniel loved Josephine despite the mistakes she had made and knew she was bound to get doted on with the new marriage. But this? This was beyond excessive.

becoming largely chill about most things. but i give myself permission to be mad about car infrastructure, car dependence, and cars flagrantly ignoring pedestrian right-of-way and generally endangering beings of flesh. because this is one of the few truly moral axis of this world

#also like increasingly cars piss me off in the abstract too as like #ok like in the united states unless you live in a couple large cities and a handful of specific smaller cities #and like maybe some small towns that built up a decent city center by say 1900 and avoided being disemboweled by the interstates #u need a car to work to get health care to get food but like we all know this #BUT #we all also know this. but it is like one of many traps to bind u to the capitalist economy inextricably #you must cough up gasoline prices and insurance costs and maintenance #and if ur the most likely to be burdened by these costs it probably also means you're making car payments too in a form of debt peonage #like once i thought about owner-operator trucks and how you pay to own the vehicle to work to pay off the vehicle #before realizing that this is just american car ownership for a large number of people in its most brazen and naked form #like we're all (ok not me because i dont have a car) owner operators who own a car to work to earn money to pay off the car #samsara. all is samsara #the wheel spins and spins and spins the wheel goes around

Sears Home no. 115

A humble starter home based on the 1908 catalog home from Sears.

Sears Modern Home no. 115

This modest Edwardian era-Gilded Age starter home is based in plans, price, and appearance on one of the earliest Sears kit homes, the 1908 #115. Sold from 1908-1942, Sears Modern Homes were ordered through mail-order catalogs to be shipped by rail to buyers, who would assemble them by hand. Like Ikea, but for affordable housing. These houses were marketed to the growing American middle class and helped to popularize the latest technologies in home building, such as balloon frame construction, plumbing, electricity, and heating.

This lot includes:

4 bedrooms

2 baths (none in the original plans which is why they aren't labeled on my poster)

Parlor, Kitchen, and Pantry, as well as two covered porches

Unfurnished and Unfinished to fit price

20 x 15 lot size

$21,914 simoleons - or around 725$ adjusted for inflation when I built it in 2021. The dollar simoleon has depreciated more since then so it's not priced as historically accurate anymore :( Better value for your sims though!

man...after reading danny's post i still can't stop thinking about his observation that ennis must feel disappointed in his (in)ability to fit into the role of being the head of his family bc like...he really, truly isn't.

he can't take care of his family right because he was built for work in a dying industry with little revenue to spare, and what work he can find he just ups and quits because he needs to answer the siren call that is a postcard. he can't please his wife and they grow so distant and bitter towards each other that she just divorces his ass and marries a local business owner, who then becomes the major provider for his own god damn children. he's just a weekend daddy.

can you imagine how pathetic he must've felt as a hand to mouth saddlebum sitting as a guest in the solidly lower middle class 70s home that his ex wife and her new husband own, watching that man cut the turkey for his own family like he's the one who runs the show because he actually is? it's gotta be just like. a straight punch to the gut for someone like ennis, whose pride and fears of emasculation are as great as a mountain.

#niche joke maybe?#unclear how many millennials and elder gen z are familiar with moorish decorative arts #but this is the theatre at New York City center #described in the show program as ‘1943 neo-moorish’#I think theatres need to start having themes again why did we stop doing that #I’m not saying we should randomly model them on landmarks of other cultures #because it’s so fucking weird #like the garde arts center in CT is vaguely Egyptian and it’s like??? that’s a choice #but new build theatres are just like neutral spaces #which I understand completely you don’t want to distract from the production happening onstage #but surely there’s some middle ground we could reach!#some kind of neo art deco revival could be lovely #especially as more and more art deco theatres are getting restored to their historic designs #I don’t know if theatres are this way in other countries but I’m assuming that the American trend at the turn of the century #was influenced by European theatrical tradition #I’ve seen color plates of concert halls and opera houses #so I’m pretty sure our heavily themed theatres built 1900-1950 are a translation of that #unfortunately I don’t really have a knowledge base for American theatres older than that because I haven’t really been to any #well wait that’s a lie I’ve been to ford’s theatre in DC #but I don’t think there was much that stood out stylistically to me I think it was just very bog standard federalist #which isn’t the period most people associate it with because of Lincoln #but I don’t know off the top of my head when it was built and that is likely a modern design choice anyway #this has been another episode of ‘I have approximate knowledge of many things’

i had heard tales of the car centric small cities auf western north america but good lord it’s worse out here than i thought. god bless you all in your struggles

#the curses of having the majority of ur city be built after the invention of cars..#on a related note i was reading some tourist guide here and it said ‘founded in the early 1900s we’re old but we’re exciting’ or whatever #and for a brief second i understood why the europeans r always being smug about how old their cities were #cause i was like damn ur young <- his city is like only 50-100 years older than that #also my aunt was like oh let me take u down to this fun and chic neighbourhood and i was like awesome finally somewhere liveable #but it was just more strip malls 😭 obsessed with the west how are you guys alive #i say all this in jest im not complaining about it but truly i dont think its a good design
