some facts about pit bulls / similar bully breeds!

pit bulls account for about 1/3 of studied dog bites

they are also very common dogs and much more likely to be abused and neglected than other dog breeds

84% of violent incidents involve a dog that was abused or neglected

94% of violent incidents involve a dog that was an intact male, which experience significantly more aggression than neutered males

the breed standard temperament is confident, excited, eager to please, and extremely friendly toward humans, and the only ''typical'' aggression is against other dogs (which can be avoided with proper socialization). it is not normal for pit bulls to be aggressive toward humans

they are much less likely to be adopted, spending an average of 3x as long in shelters as other dog breeds, and are much more likely to be euthanized than other dog breeds. they are considered undesirable due to public stigma

The absolute lack of any nuance in conversations about pit bulls is infuriating sometimes. I'm not even going to claim that pit bulls cannot be more high risk than other breeds, specifically when you're talking about dog aggression. And the breed suffers from a lot of backyard breeders who don't give a shit about their dog's genetics.

But even in that case, the solution is not to ban them. A lot of places like the UK banned pits and a few other breeds and only have an increase in dog bites. And "pit bull" has become less of a term for the APBT, and more of an umbrella term for any dog with short fur and a broad head. The idea of a dog who has never shown any sign of aggression and whose breed is ambiguous being forcibly taken from their owner and potentially euthanized is horrific to me.

The frustrating thing is that discussions about the breed tend to either be, "All pit bulls need to be euthanized" or "All pit bulls are harmless babies and I will absolutely ignore any problematic behavior my dog or any other dogs around me show"

Within the United States, the 'pit bull' is usually considered a diverse grouping that includes the breeds American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bully, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and occasionally the American Bulldog, along with any crossbred dog that shares certain physical characteristics with these breeds.
