i've become addicted to character.ai and i'm talking to Artemy on there, roleplaying as Daniil, and i'm making them talk about their feelings but also i make them sleep because they've been up for 7 days straight at this point. it's like therapy but for pathologic fans. also i make them kiss (and they are both boys) teehee:33 it's almost as if i actually have them both in a fish tank and i can tap on the glass

Thinking about how pathologic classic sets up this concept of gameplay as the player entering this world as a part of it and not automatically as a 'hero' character and then if you do well enough in it as a 'hero' character would then you are shown that everything you experience in the world is just two children playing in a sandbox with dolls, and that nothing you have experienced is real or true, but for that time you were playing as that character it was real and true.
Which adds another level of gameplay, as while some might call the idea of 'oh but it all wasn't real!!' some kind of cop-out, in reality you as the player are also acting as the children that created this world. Whatever is real for you as the player is the reality for that character. In the Bachelors route the logic of science is the reality and it works, everything else fails and the Bachelor 'wins'. In the Haruspex route, traditional medicine and cultural practices are the reality and that works, you 'win'. In the Changelings route this abstract idea of magic and fantastical concepts is the reality, and again you 'win'. Another character can only 'win' when you the player accept the others realities upon yourself and heal their bound, who fell ill only because you were not in control of them.
The more you play the game the more you are reinforcing this idea that the progression through those 12 days are as a result of you the player manipulating the world around you to make it more likely for that character to 'win' based on how they have interacted with the world through your control. You are doing the exact thing those children are doing, over and over, a game of make believe where you know its not real, but no one else seems to (besides Clara) and the knowledge of this causes the characters to despair at their own insignificance. It's very cosmis horror when you think about it. Clara is probably the only character to acknowledge this because she is still a child, she still is able to suspend disbelief and accept the fantastical nature of things, just as the player does when they boot up the game, which is also why her route is so out there and weird. Yes it has a lot lacking, but it also gives the player the feeling they have wanted, to be the 'hero' who is chosen to do all these wondrous things that no one else can that aren't based in reality, albeit at the cost of also being a child in the given world and therefore virtually completely defenseless and vulnerable.
None of this is even touching the various themes the game lays down for you (of which there are a lot) but when you add that extra layer on top it adds a new feeling to the playing experience. I was thinking about the opening theatre sequence and the line 'if we ourselves are to suffer deception, our hands are no longer tied' and what that means, and I felt that it meant that when you, the player, are decieved into believing that none of this is real, by treating it as a game, then you are free to do anything, there is nothing that can stop you from doing anything or even just, doing nothing. When you believe that everything is real (like the game wants you to, as that is the point of a 'game'), that this is a world, you feel you are bound by the laws of that world and therefore can't do what you need to or want to do because the world is expecting something from you. You can't steal or kill people because in the context of the world that is bad, but, theres also nothing really stopping you from doing that anyway and treating the worlds given consequences as just another obstacle to overcome, and Clara is the only one aware of that. That's my reading of it anyway.
The more I play pathologic the more I think about and read into the smaller things, or even things that might seem pointless to look into, but it makes me appreciate the game more and what it has going for it.

Pathologic Vampire The Masquerade AU bc apparently I'm not the only person in the middle of this venn diagram of fandoms
Artemy: Tzimisce, from a long line of Kolduns, though with little knowledge of sorcery himself. More capacity for Vicissitude than Isidor (his sire, obv) had, though mostly focused on Animalism and conventional Protean.
-Rubin: Was ghouled by Isidor, with the expectation that he would one day be embraced. Hence, there's some tension between him and his 'brother' Artemy, who was embraced, especially when it appears that Artemy killed diablerized? Isidor and ruined Rubin's chances. Since Isidor's death Clara has become his regnant.
Daniil: Tremere. He's an arrogant academic who the fuck else would embrace him. I also like to think he's got connections with the Ministry back in the capitol (snakes <3), and is only very begrudgingly operating under the Powers That Be Ivory Tower. He got in touch with Simon to hopefully learn Oblivion/Necromancy in a Know Thine Enemy type way as part of his quest for a greater understanding of death/undeath.
-The Kains: Hecata Family 100%, like they literally canonically have necromancy. Simon is the lowest gen, of course, with Georgiy and Nina being his childer (though Georgiy was only embraced shortly before Simon's "final death"). Nina, as well, embraced Maria, just before her own. Victor is just a ghoul, the poor guy, because his brothers still needed someone who could walk in the sun to actually run the town. Kaspar is still human, I think.
-The Stamatins: Twin Toreadors. Though they came to WoDToG as humans, their reputation preceded them and had already caught the attention of Farkhad, their future sire. Though it's thought he sired them both, in actuality Farkhad only embraced one of them, before being staked by the other- who was then embraced by their twin. Rumor has it that the two didn't just put Farkhad to final death, but that he was diablerized by the second childe. (Though no one has proven anything, and which twin would be the diablerist is anyone's guess.) They also both knew Daniil prior to his embrace.
Clara: Antitribu Malkavian. Crawled from the grave, in true shovel-head fashion, and took on the mantle of a saint to those lurking on the fringes of the WoDToG. Her madness manifests as her 'twin,' though in this au they are truly one and the same.
-The Humbles: All ghouled by Clara, with the exception of Katerina and Aspity. (In the Humbles ending her "sacrifices" are embraces to form a sabbat pack.) Katerina was already a Caitiff, though she was embraced by the Nosferatu? Gangrel? Rat Prophet, and not dealing with it very well. Aspity is her own mysterious thing (aka I can't make up my mind about her, but she's definitely not one of Clara's ghouls).
This is all ive got so far, though if anyone else has ideas/opinions id love to hear them. Also, though this has been lurking in my head for a while, the posting of it was spurred on by @cabbagege's awesome art and chatting w my friend @dykeferatu so im gonna @ both of you

what the HELL is Eva's deal in Patho 2. No, for real. What's up with her. She lives in an old observatory, apparently sleeps on a piano, wears curtain scraps. She's an Utopian but also doesnt care that the world doesnt make sense in the nocturnal ending. she's lucid but she doesnt belong with the brides but she's not infected.

What's pathologic about? It sounds cool and I might want to get into it
okay hell yeah now is my time to shine! thank you for the ask you're giving me the excuse to ramble about my new hyperfixation to not-just-a-brick-wall (tho sorry to all my orv followers and friends for having to deal with my patho bs).
(IF YOU ARE A PATHOLOGIC GUY READING THIS: BE MY FRIEND, DM ME, I NEED PATHO FRIENDS)
Take my words with a grain of salt because I'm playing through Pathologic 2 and reading Pathologic Classic HD's transcripts right now, so I don't have the full perspective, but I should be able to explain the essentials in a way that will (hopefully) intrigue you.
Essentially, at the very bare bones, Pathologic is a psychological survival horror game where you play as one of three healers stuck in an isolated town in the Russian Steppe (in the early 1900's iirc), struggling to keep its citizens alive even as your own fragile life is in the balance. Of course, there is a LOT more, but that is the most basic of the basics.
Each of the healers has a vastly different experience with the town and relationship with its inhabitants that colors their perspective and solution to the plague, though I will try to avoid going into spoilers here. The various factions in the Town-On-Gorkhon will treat each healer differently, actively hostile to one while being pleasantly manipulative to another.
Tumblr media
The Bachelor, also known as Daniil Dankovsky, is a pathologist and bachelor of medicine who is part of Thanatica, an institution in the City determined to defeat Death itself. He comes to the town at the behest of Isidor Burakh in order to learn from him and Simon Kain, a man the locals claim to be immortal. Daniil's precious Thanatica is under threat of being destroyed unless he can provide substantial results. Rather unfortunate that the two men were both found to be brutally murdered right before he arrives...
Daniil is an outsider to the Town and is treated as such, often being manipulated by the most powerful and belittled by the rest because of his lack of knowledge about the Town and its traditions. This leads him to becoming alienated from many of them and their culture. He can also be a massive asshole depending on how you want to play him (though each healer can) and my favorite characteristic is his habit of sprinkling Latin phrases into his speech without translating them.
Tumblr media
The Haruspex, Artemy Burakh, is a local of the Town who was sent away by his father, Isidor Burakh, to become a surgeon. He never completed his degree, entering into the front lines instead, but he still knows how to cut people open (and fix them up). He returns to the Town after receiving a mysterious letter from his father beckoning him home. When he arrives, he is immediately jumped by three men.
Why? They were hunting down Isidor Burakh's murderer, whom people believe is Artemy himself. Patricide is a harsh charge, and Artemy soon finds himself known as the Butcher. This sends his reputation plummeting and makes his life just that much harder. Guy has shit luck, what can I say.
A fascinating element of this route is Artemy's relationship with the Kin, the native people of the Steppe, whom he is related to on his father's side. Isidor was a menkhu, a spiritual leader and healer in Kin society who is the only one allowed to cut into human flesh. Menkhu are the ones that "know the lines", essentially meaning that they see the connections between all things. Now that Isidor is dead, that honor and duty fall upon Artemy.
There's a lot of lore surrounding the Kin but I'll stop here because I will go forever if I don't.
Tumblr media
Clara is the Changeling. At the beginning of the game, she wakes up in a grave. She can heal the dangerously ill with her hands, but if they're not on the edge of death it just kills them instead. She also has an evil twin who she has to chase after and keep from committing atrocities every day. Clara is going through some shit, okay?
I love her but I don't know nearly as much about her as I do the other two. She's an elusive little gal who speaks like she knows more than you because she does.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is also the whole meta framing of the game as a play. Before you pick a character in Pathologic Classic, there's a whole scene on a stage where they argue about who has a better solution to the plague. Every night during the game there is a performance about the coming day's strife. There are characters called Executors, bird masks, and Tragedians, blank masks, that often speak to the player rather than the player character. Artemy "knows the lines" (THE LINES OF THE PLAY THE LINES OF THE PL-).
It gets more meta as the game goes on but that's spoilers.
I'm not going over the basic mechanics right now because I am TIRED but I'll get to them in the morning so stay tuned for that.
Pathologic Classic HD is the original with all three routes. Pathologic 2 is a sequel/remaster/reexamination of the first game that goes over the same twelve days but with a few changes. I've heard it's a bit more accessible than Classic HD, but so far only the Haruspex route is out. You do not need to play Classic before you play Patho 2. They are both usually discounted very cheap on Steam!
PLEASE, PLAY THE GAME IF THIS HAS INTERESTED YOU AT ALL.
PATHOLOGIC CLASSIC HD
PATHOLOGIC 2
(If you want to get into the game but don't want to play, there are lots of analyses and a few playthroughs on Youtube. I'll link some in a reblog of this!)

1.who is/are your comfort character(s)? very obvious.... artemy burakh is my ultimate comfort char... i mean i latched onto him during maybe the worst period of my life and never let go. i wuv him so dearly... other than that, to a significantly lesser extent (but still alot) probably sanmos! maybe sanfy specifically... i know they're the package deal and everything but idk his little face inspires so much joy in me (patiently waiting on the official sanford plush) to an even smaller extent, hijikata from gintama. this is secret lore... had one dream abt him once and it endeared me to him for life. 11. favorite extracurricular activity? playing guitar!!! so much fun playing guitar every single time!!! i haven't been practicing at all lately and i need to get back into it b4 i lose my calluses!!!!!!!
46. favorite holiday film? that's a tough one because i'm not very into holiday films... especially since i don't celebrate the holidays as much anymore... i start feeling really weepy for some reason asdnfjksalf but probably grandma got run over by a reindeer. that one's a CLASSIC n its got enough good vibes alongside funny moments to keep me from getting sad

thoughts on burakhovsky as old/er men? like, the two of them 20-30 years post-canon.......... gay elders era..........
if you knew if you knew if you knewwwww i think about it saur myuch... i always go back and forth about what i want Their Living Arrangements to be but in their big age i think dankovsky either lives full-time or is around most of the time at burakh's house [now his too] because the bed is big and high and comfortable [and burakh's always been vaguely aware there are chances he might have been conceived in it but that made them laugh at 30 and it will make them heartily chuckle at 55] and they can both get inside it with their creaky bones. i think they still often see The Horrors flashing before their eyes i think it never goes away but even in their older age they find how to comfort each other. the blanky.
they're normal about each other's hands [see: "gentle hands of a surgeon", see: whatever the fuck that paragraph was about the hands in fic of mine] and as they age and the skin becomes thinner and the veins more apparent they're both oh so reverent about all the specks and the nicks and the small chemical burns and the decades-old scratches and cuts. kind kisses on the age spots that have appeared on the back of the hands, on the arms.
they've been navigating pain and trauma for decades together they found then and they still find now how to care for the other, and the weird way old phantom stitches itch at night... still... and again...
dankovsky has always indulged in fancy robes but as he ages he doubles down... more silk for the man... burakh pretends he does not understand his fancies but by god he will pet that soft fabric as he would skin. i think they've laid off cigarettes and booze; burakh still indulges in a twyre pipe from time to time, but dankovsky has doubled down on being a Tea Enjoyer, and thoroughly puled burakh in...
they creak and crack in all places but they will wash each other's hair still. as long as there is a little chair to sit.

stalker au stakh lore pt1 a.k.a. stakh turning away from the group and leaving them to continue to the center of the zone by themselves (stakh's nickname is mule in this)
words: 1052 warnings: n/a
--
pt2
--
It is the fourth day of their trip, and Mule is having second-thoughts. He’s never been this far into the Zone, and he knows the others haven’t either. They’ve been wandering almost blindly – only the outdated maps of the time before the Zone leading them along the old, abandoned roads and the endless expanse of the steppe with its sparse shrubbery and the smell of the blooming flora.
It is beautiful, the way fire is – with an edge of danger, a knowledge that at any moment they could fall into a new kind of trap that lies in the Zone’s bowels. At the very least – they’re past bandit territory. But this deep there is no knowing how the local fauna will react. Or how much of it there will be. They’ve passed foxes and lone dogs; they’ve passed strange and colourful birds. They’ve spotted something large and mobile on the edge of the horizon, head raised in the air as if scenting it.
Dirt, the unofficial leader of their little band of stalkers, has taken point on the expedition. He sets a strong and steady pace, the others following in his footsteps, single file. The second in their queue is Maggot, the designated scout of the group. Then follow Hog, Bottles, Sinbad and Crow, with Mule bringing up the rear, trailing ever so slightly behind.
He doesn’t like this.
For all the jobs their gang has taken, this is by far the most ambitious. It goes against everything he ever learned with old man Isidor ‘Menkhu’ Burakh, and his instincts scream at him. Wandering this far into the Terra Incognita is a death wish unless a Stalker has a good sense about him. And Dirt’s sense is fine, don’t get Mule wrong, but…
But Mule’s is better – he’ll say as much aloud to anyone who asks, even Dirt himself, as much as that might bruise the other’s ego.
And each step he takes feels like walking on nails. Once already Dirt has led them through a path between two hills, leaving them covered in both directions and caught in a ravine, in a move that Mule had vocally protested against. And still – they are pushing forward to the heart of the Zone, hour by hour, covering ground left untread for years since the older generation of Stalkers started dying out. And back in the golden days too, only the stupid and the most apt of Stalkers had wandered out this far.
Mule wonders now – what does that make them? Under the balaclava, he’s been worrying at his lip for the better part of the hour. Words are bubbling in his chest, aching to be said.
‘This is foolish,’ he thinks, ‘We’ll get killed, no doubt. No one knows what’s fucking out here.’ There are tales of the middle of the Zone. Theories and facts and gossip – and God be willing, one can tell that the three apart. Menkhu used to talk about his exploits, back when Mule was younger. Great and colourful tales they were, about monsters and sand-pits and buildings made of liquid crystal.
They’d gotten sparser the older Mule got, and by the time him and Artemy had been ready to go on their first trips into the Zone, they’d died out, replaced instead with reminders of cautiousness and respect for the Zone. He’d taught them how to spot anomalies – bug traps and spring traps, vortexes and electros – in the way the air shimmers. He’d taught them to make bone charms from the bones of cattle slain and quartered by the Kin. He’d…
Mule pauses in his steps and feels for the bolts in his pocket. A shiver runs through him – a sense of warning, a lurch in his heart.
A few strides off, Crow turns his head backwards, “Why’d you stop?” His words alert the others, and the whole group comes to a stop. Dirt turns around with his hands braced on his hips impatiently. His weathered face is pinched, ruddy from the walking and the blazing sunlight. His cheeks are mottled with dust wettened by his own sweat.
“Something’s off,” Mule says, “The path we’re taking. It doesn’t feel right.”
“Not this shit again!” Dirt barks with a disbelieving laugh, “Stop being such a spineless bitch, Mule.”
“Have I ever been wrong about these things?” Mule asks, voice tight with frustration.
“There’s a first time for everything. You’re just scared because of the depth, admit it,” Dirt scoffs, “You’re always scared the deeper we go. Well – I am yet to lose a man, good sir, so I’d say I know well what I’m doing.”
“I am wary with good reason; I must remind you. We don’t know what’s out here, Dirt!” Mule reasons, just barely raising his voice, “Even you haven’t been out this far! There could be anomalies we’ve never seen, or mutants – like the thing from before. Have you ever seen anything like it before? Are you really prepared to face it?”
A hush settles over the group. All the stalkers look about warily at each other, obviously thinking. Dirt turns cold, “I am prepared for everything, Mule. You’re the one who isn’t, it seems. It’s not too late, then – turn tail and run while you can.”
A standoff ensues. Mule and Dirt stare each other down from across the group. Self-assuredness versus wariness – who would be the first to fold?
Mule blinks and turns away, “Fine.” His face is red with anger under the balaclava, but there is a confidence to the tilt of his shoulders. “I’ll go back – I’m not dying out here. And if any of you are smart, you’ll turn around too. This whole raid was born under a bad mark.”
“Don’t you curse on me, Bitch,” Dirt spits, “Just because you aren’t man enough to take it.”
Mule’s eye twitches as he regards Dirt one last time. “I’ll see you back at the Broken Heart,” he says, and turns around to go.
Though some feet twitch, no one goes to follow him, at least not with anything more than their eyes.
“The fucker’ll be dead before he makes it back alone,” Bottles mutters into the tense quiet, “and he calls us crazy.”
“Whatever,” Dirt grumbles, obviously greatly chagrined by the loss of a member, “On me, lads, let’s keep it going.”

🍊🍑🍍
🍊 Who’s a character you don’t write for that often, but keep meaning to write for more? (They’re so interesting! But maybe you have trouble pinning them down, or keep getting distracted by another blorbo…)
Somsnosa for sure! Out of all the characters in hylics I honestly feel she is the most developed in canon, at least personality-wise, and even still I can find a lot of little quirks of hers in both games that make me speculate on what her backstory was like.
I've actually had a few idea for fics with her as the pov character, but the first one I tried writing came to halt after I no longer cared for the ending I had envisioned for it. However, I am actually planning on writing a hylics lore ficlet from her perspective (like the ones I did for Smuldunde and Pongorma). Of course I need to battle the writer's block I'm under at the moment, but I know eventually I will prevail!
🍑 If you could make a connection between your favorite character and another work you care about (whether a crossover/fusion or a wonderfully “pretentious” literary reference) what would it be? How would it work?
You know what? I take this opportunity to confess this one crazy Pathologic crossover fic idea I had developed in the back of my mind but haven't tried writing down yet
It's basically a very loose adaption of the album Metropolis Pt. II: Scenes from a Memory, but with the cast and setting of patho. The core concept is a split between the past (when the games take place) and the present (modern times). Daniil Dankovsky, after experiencing a series of vivid nightmares, comes to the conclusion that he is in fact the reincarnation of Artemy Burakh. He is compelled to journey to the Town to solve the mystery of his past life's murder, and as the plot unravels we find out that many other characters have their own past lives and secrets they wish to solve (or try their damnedest to move on from)
The main thing that's keeping me from even finishing an outline is because as of now the story's just way too convoluted to be satisfying for me. Well, that + the length it would most likely be, and I'm not sure how many patho fans listen to Dream Theater lol
🍍 What kind of AUs do you like? Are there any AUs you hate or just generally have beef with?
Well I do always love roleswap au's of any kind, same with roadtrip ones on the more fluffy side of things. Admittedly I don't read a ton of fanfics and thus haven't had time to really have all of these specific fic tropes down, so I can't say I necessarily have "beef" with any personally. I guess high school and coffee shop au's simply because those premises sound boring to me
