Sunlight and Instincts

Soft early morning sunlight streamed through the windows.

The Rani ran the tip of her index finger across her lower lip as she surveyed her surroundings. She was curled up on the large couch like a cat, wrapped in a sheet.

Human beings spend a third of their life asleep. A third of their life. And of course, humans were the bipedal Emphemeroptera of this tiny galaxy. Dull, mundane mayflies flitting about their idiotic lives, wasting roughly three hundred and eighteen months just lying on a mattress. Not that she had any problem with activities spent on mattresses per se, but spending that amount of time asleep?

Pointless. Baffling.

It was never something that she had to consider before, as her dealings with humans had always been very brief and distanced affairs. Affairs which usually involved burns, wounds, sharp screams orchestrated from afar, and eventually culminated in their deaths.

But now, not only was she in a situation where distance had more-or-less been removed from the equation, she was in a situation where she was, for some reason, indulging one specific human who seemed insistent on being persistently, irritatingly and, above all, annoyingly human-like in his behaviour.

Not personality-wise, obviously. But this sudden six hour gap spent doing something as foreign as patiently waiting for one of the six billion individuals on this planet to await from slumber felt like a a burning coal sitting directly between the two hearts in her chest. The ones he had pressed his ear to last night, one after another, his smile wide and lupine in the dark, before his mouth had met hers once more.

Running her fingers through her hair, she wondered if sleep was something that could be conditionalised. Perhaps based on a reward system.

A very specific rewards system.

And then her mind wandered for a moment, broaching such subjects as the difference between rewards and punishments, and how sometimes the lines between the two can be blurred.

It was six in the morning, and the sun was just up. It was six in the morning, the sun was up, and she had read four novels already. It was six in the morning, the sun was up and she has already combed every inch of the apartment for sources of amusement. It was six in the morning, the sun was up, and Jim was still asleep. 

Humans needed so much sleep.

It had been fine at first, sliding out from the bed, stealing a bed-sheet as she went, giggling softly at the situation, at her own behaviour. It had been amusing, going through the various possessions scattered around the apartment, seeing the false persona that Jim had created to inhabit the space.

But now she was bored. She was waiting. Her own behaviour was foreign to her, and her irritation with this fact was like a buzzing itch in the back of her mind. A dying mayfly beating senselessly against her skull. She found herself trying not to think the sentence that stood out most starkly in her mind.

Never mind. It'll be gone soon.

Sighing, she ran her palms over the soft leather, and stood. Bare feet padding on the wooden floorboards, she softly walked back to the bedroom.

He was still asleep, his lithe limbs splayed. Eyelashes throwing dark shadows on sharp cheekbones. She ran the tip of her finger along the white bones underneath the skin, her finger pausing at the edge of his mouth, where it found a fluttering pulse.

Wake up, she said in her mind.

Wake up. 

Stop being human.

Wake up.

Wandering Spiders

Moriarty had decided that he needed to have a little chat with Rani. The Rani, he reminded himself. He hated the times when he was just as dull as everyone else. He should have known sooner. No matter, it would be settled now. 

He waited for her to arrive at the office at their scheduled time. Whether this talk went in her favour or not, they had a few things to discuss. While he waited he pulled up his computer and looked at a few of his newer messages. A few packages to smuggle, a few people to kill, a blood feud to start? That looked like fun. He set it aside to look at more thoroughly when he had time. 

He waited until his security informed him that she had arrived before he closed down his computer and leaned back in his chair, relaxing as he waited. He did not want things to seem overly different, but she needed to understand that this was serious. The normal smile that was on his face when she entered was gone and replaced with a blank expression.
