bio
— jasper was born at 12:36pm on 12th june 1971 to alexander morgan, the uk’s financial secretary to the treasury, and his wife jillian, a london university dean. he is their only child and even though he felt pretty lonely when he was younger, it didn’t bother him so much in his teenage years.
— his parents were always working, always stressed, and never really had any time for him. he spent a lot of time with his maternal grandparents, who only lived on the next street over, and was practically raised by them. jasper also couldn’t think of anything more boring and frustrating that working in government and always deflected his father’s efforts to influence him. his relationship with alexander wasn’t great but it wasn’t terrible either and jasper got along better with his mother.
— whilst staying at his grandparents, jasper was introduced to films. his grandfather phillip was a huge film buff and they’d watch a classic together every night jasper stayed and then spend time afterwards discussing them. his favourites include to kill a mockingbird (1962), casablanca (1942), and one hundred and one dalmatians (1961). he is also a fan of buster keaton, harold lloyd, and charlie chaplin.
— it was his passion for films that inspired jasper to want to become an actor. his parents were disappointed, wanting him to become a lawyer or doctor or politician, but neither of them had the time to argue, so let jasper join a local drama club and partake in school shows.
— he also went to a private school that he felt indifferent about. he liked the majority of subjects, mostly english and history, but loathed to partake in sports, which always had a big emphasis put on it. he left school with straight a’s, which he worked incredibly hard to get, usually pulling all-nighters to study and asking his grandfather for help with revising maths.
— jasper then attended the royal academy of dramatic art in london where he exceeded in developing and honing his acting skills. his parents only paid for most of it, so on the weekends, jasper worked in a nearby hotel to earn extra money and found that he really enjoyed it. he befriended the owner’s son callum without knowing who he was and before long jasper was friends with the owner, leonard, too. leonard became a mentor to jasper, teaching him important life skills and knowledge that would help him in both his hotel job and in the real world. he treated jasper like a son and once he left that job to pursue acting full time, he would visit leonard and callum whenever he could, even bringing them back souvenirs and recipes from abroad whenever he was filming on location.
— at the age of 24, jasper got his first major acting job in a period miniseries where he played the outcast son of a victorian socialite trying to start a new life. his performance was well-received by viewers and critics, which impressed his parents, who finally accepted their son’s career choice. this set him up for his first film role, which he travelled to italy for, and found to be the most incredible experience of his life.
— at 26 jasper began a relationship with a female co-star named natalie. they played lovers in a tumultuous relationship in a high-budget film shot in london and that relationship transferred to their personal lives. they fell hard and fast for each other, sneaking kisses in their dressing rooms, making any excuse to see each other on their days off, hiding away in hotel rooms, and eating out late at diners. but things eventually became strained; they began to find out things they didn’t like about each other, like personality traits or the way they did things, and when filming was over jasper stayed in the city and natalie flew out to los angeles for another project- they never saw or spoke to each other again. their relationship lasted seven months and resulted in a daughter that jasper knew nothing of until very recently.
— the aforementioned role was also the one that got jasper recognised as a serious actor with so much potential for a bright future as a superstar. he started getting more jobs offers and being booked on talk shows and after promoting the film he flew out to new york city to take a supporting role in another film. at this point jasper was so full of energy and enthusiasm for his new-found stardom that he rarely took breaks between jobs and at it was a good excuse to get his mind off of natalie.
— filming in nyc made jasper fall in love with the place. he applied to work in the states and made the move as soon as he could and was offered an off-broadway role fairly quickly: this would be his first stage show since he was in the midst of his training. it posed a challenge, but one that jasper grasped with both hands and took as a very valuable opportunity. five years later, he’d earned his first ever award- a tony- and was officially a citizen of the usa. he bought himself an apartment in manhattan and that’s where he stayed until moving to aurora bay, often returning to london both for work and because he was homesick.
— jasper never thought it would happen, but he became an oscar winner at the age of 38, having got the award for playing the lead role as a corrupt detective in a film noir that slowly began to lose his sanity as the film progressed. the film itself got rave reviews, as did jasper’s performance, and even today he still can’t believe that all happened. he keeps his oscar on the bookshelf in his room besides a photograph of him in costume with the director, who was a long-term friend, by his side.
— not long after his 44th birthday, jasper decided to retire from acting. he felt like he’d given all he could to the profession and hated leaving everything he ever knew and worked so hard for behind, but also knew that a new journey was close to beginning. somewhere in the back of his mind, influenced by his early adulthood, jasper wanted to run his own hotel or even something like a b&b, but didn’t really know where to start.
— jasper had once filmed on location in aurora bay and fell in love with the place, so when he found an opportunity to buy a hotel there he snapped it up. the seascape hotel had been in the same family since it opened in 1974 and its current owner could no longer afford the upkeep. jasper payed above price and vowed to put the place back on the map and even honoured the family by keeping the hotel’s name.
— he spent almost two years renovating the seascape and spent a lot of money on it, too, but the final product was something he was incredibly proud of. he hosted an opening night party for the residents of aurora bay and even invited some celebrity friends as well as local newspapers to write about the event.
— despite being the owner, jasper takes a very hands-on approach. when needed, he’ll take on the role of waiter, cleaner, and bartender, and ensure he does everything so that his guests are happy: no request is too big or too small. he will even provide entertainment in the evenings, playing the piano and singing to accompany the music.
headcanons
— his accent is evidently british, but having lived in new york for so long it easily slips into an american one; jasper doesn’t notice, but people who don’t know him initially find it confusing. for fun, he developed his own transatlantic accent and uses that to amuse people especially when doing old hollywood themed evenings in the hotel’s lounge.
— he can also do scarily uncanny impressions of a variety of people with best ones including christopher walken, al pacino, jeremy irons, liam neeson, and james stewart.
— jasper is ferociously optimistic and always wants to see the best in a situation and also the best in people. sometimes he finds it difficult, but he's glad he's surrounded by people that give him different perspectives on things and different kinds of advice. he's also happy to return the favour when people need him.
— jasper owns a black 1970 ford mustang mach 1 and loves to take it on long drives up and down the coast. he makes sure that the car is always in immaculate condition and is working exactly the way it did when it left the factory.
— on a very rare occasion, jasper will recreate some of his favourite and most iconic scenes from the film, tv, and theatre productions he’s been in on stage in the hotel lounge. he’ll even dress up costume.
— even though whisky is his favourite drink, jasper is a cocktail connoisseur. he loves experimenting with new recipes and tries them out in the hotel bars to see if his guests and staff like them before implementing them on the menu. he loves sweet and fruity cocktails the most, especially ones with orange, passion fruit, and strawberry flavours.
— whilst he likes most music genres, jasper loves all the old school stuff from the 1950s and 1960s. it reminds him of listening to his grandparents’ record player as a kid and dancing with his grandmother as they baked together.
— jasper is a great listener and helping others to solve their problems gives him a purpose. no matter how bit or small the issue he’s there to simply listen or give advice; he also finds it a lot easier to do this than to face his own problems or accept help from others.
— jasper has an instagram account with 28 million followers. he doesn’t know how he has that many, but he gets excited about it often. he posts a lot of photos of aurora bay, especially the beach, as well as photos from his time on film/tv sets, screencaps from his favourite films, his favourite books and current reads, and his piano playing skills amongst other things. and even though the seascape has its own account, but with not nearly as many followers, jasper will often post about events, drinks offers, etc. on his personal one as he knows it’ll reach a wider audience.
wanted connections
— biological daughter: jasper’s daughter was born 25/26 years ago after a seven month relationship with a co-star (see bio above). the two of them split up before jasper could find out he was going to be a father and has been oblivious ever since. until his daughter shows up, having flown all the way from london, at the seascape saying her mother has died but finally admitted who her father was. she wants a relationship with jasper and to get to know him, so is willing to stay in aurora bay to see how things progress. everything else about his daughter (such as her own profession) is utp and anything can be discussed! — (any white or half-white female fc would work for her, so bring whoever you think would fit!)
— seascape hotel employees: jasper has an incredible team working for him and treats them all with kindness and respect no matter their role. as well as a general manager (who would be jasper’s right hand), he would also need receptionists, bar managers (one for inside bar and one for poolside bar) and staff, waiters/waitresses, housekeeping staff, chefs, masseurs, personal trainers, and lifeguards. — (unless stated, there can be several of the same positions, but feel free to bring in any position you think fits!)
— best friend/crush: this muse has been living in aurora bay a lot longer than jasper has and, like a lot of the town, turned up to the seascape's grand reopening party, which was where she met jasper. they hit it off immediately and quickly became firm friends, often turning to each other for advice as well as hanging out together and helping each other with just about anything whether personally or professionally. their romantic attraction grew after a while and was mutual, but neither of them wanted to ruin their relationship, so stayed quiet and suppressed their feelings, and now they’re both silently conflicted on what the future holds for them. — (even though my preferred fc for this muse is naomi watts, i’m open to discussing other options and everything else about her is completely utp!)

🐱 + Jane!! ^_^
also asked by @onomatopoetic-aesthetic! thank you <3
note; for janejames a lot of the questions will be hypothetical and general to all incarnations
If they're a light or heavy sleeper:
They're a light sleeper. The thing is I don't think they needs to sleep - the only time they're a heavy sleeper is post-regeneration (although their fourth incarnation was awoken during the 'saving gallifrey' sequence lol)
2. What they would do if they won the lottery right now:
They'd give it to charity, of course -- it's kind and nice and the right thing to do!
3. If they have a special item that they couldn't bear to lose:
Depends on the incarnation. Jane V has a necklace that was purchased by her mother during the Women Who Fell To Earth and it's so important to her that her sixth incarnation made sure to give it back to her post bigeneration - bc she got it oops. tbh for all the ones post IV its their sonic sunglasses, with most of them being based on the original model created by their parent!
4. One negative personality trait of theirs:
James I will get into trouble to prove a point, usually dragging others into his mess. Jane II is a bit pretentious, something her third incarnation calls her on. Jane III does not suffer fools gladly, which often means she treats everyone around her as being basically gullible lemmings. James IV gets distracted easily, which means he'll often miss important information. Jane V will often believe she's in the right even when she's not and is quite stubborn when it comes to that sort of thing. idk about Jane VI yet :')
5. Their favorite 70s song:
Massive Bowie fan and has listened to Heroes several times over. In fact I imagine that Jane VI's records are mostly Bowie, Queen and Prince!
6. The color(s) associated with their zodiac:
Janejames is a Sagittarius (November 23rd) and the colour associated with that zodiac is blue!
7. Their favorite comedy movie:
Big fan of the Carry On movies. Their fourth incarnation definitely goes full into 90s/00s American comedy as well as old Buster Keaton films - which is where 90% of his personality comes from :')
8. About one person they've lost:
I'm so tempted to just post the clip from the Giggle where the Toymaker explains the companions who have died since Donna has left but I'm going to write my own - Bill Potts was very much James IV's rock and best friend, he saw her as very much a sibling. When he discovered that he and the Doctor had left her behind for a billion years, he's mortified, and even more so when The Master orders Bill to kill him. It's a very frightening experience, and probably sets the scene for the trauma that Jane V would suffer during her lifetime
9. A quote I associate with them:
Tumblr media
10. If they're a lover or a fighter:
Another depends on the incarnation question -- James I, Jane II & James IV are lovers, while Jane III & Jane V are fighters. Jane VI has made peace with all that, so she's most likely a lover <3

Get to know me
Thank you so much to @cherries11 and @artistamateurieuse for tagging me (and sorry that I didn't do this months ago when I was first tagged - I suck at Tumblr!)
Last song: 'Clear Skies Ever Closer' by Cherry Ghost because I'm on an Endeavour Morse kick and Shaun Evans is swaggering around this vid like only he can.
Last show: I swing happily between Merlin (and all things Bradley James), Downton Abbey (and all things Rob James Collier) and Endeavour (and all things Shaun Evans) at the moment, so there's no way I can pick just one.
Currently watching: Literally this moment watching Steven Spielberg's Duel - Dennis Weaver's running skills are severely underrated!
Currently reading: Just finished 'Camera Man: Buster Keaton, the Dawn of Cinema, and the Invention of the Twentieth Century' by Dana Stevens. I love Buster.
Current obsession: Trying to find the time to read the absolutely incredible fanfic related to my faves, not least of which all those written by the two exceptionally talented folk who tagged me!
Three ships: Merthur, Saundreas, Barris (but equal opportunities Dexmas, Chrismas, Branrow etc. - I'm basically just shameless about Thomas Barrow!) Oh, and @cherries11 - I hope you caught David Oakes as Bixby in Endeavour - that's surely a ship!
Favourite colour: Any strong colour, deep blue if I really had to choose
First ship: I didn't know it at the time, but George and Orry (North and South), more recently McShep.
Relationship status: Permanently complicated.
Tagging: anyone reading this or following me that would like to play, it would be a privilege to learn more about all you wonderfully creative people!

Movie Review | Encounter of the Spooky Kind (Hung, 1980)
Tumblr media
This review contains mild spoilers.
Encounter of the Spooky Kind is the deeply relatable story of a secretly cowardly man played by Sammo Hung who is being cheated on by his wife, so her lover decides that the best way to resolve the situation is to have him killed and goes to a magician, whose plan involves having Sammo stay at a scary old house where he’s supposed to get killed by a hopping vampire, but Sammo gets some nice tips from a good magician and manages to mostly avoid and then eventually kung fu fight the hopping vampire, so the lover decides to frame Sammo for the murder of the wife, and the one guy who can speak in Sammo’s defense had a stroke while everybody else testifies against him, so Sammo gets arrested by by Lam Ching-Ying ends up having to break out prison and ends up kung fu fighting a maggoty zombie right after, and then Sammo gets saved again from Lam by the good magician and then becomes his disciple, and the two of them go to fight the lover and the evil magician, and the two magicians argue over who has the bigger altar, and then there’s surprisingly bloody kung fu fight and then a really tasteless conclusion. What I’m saying is, it could happen to anybody.
This is a movie directed by and starring Sammo Hung. As an actor, here and elsewhere he brings a likable, dopey and self-deprecating presence that perhaps counters some of the less tasteful elements in the movie. To take a few examples, think of how hard it is to hate Sammo in Skinny Tiger, Fatty Dragon despite the scenes of him groping suspects, or how hard it is to hate Sammo in My Lucky Stars despite the agonizingly long scene where he and the other Lucky Stars scheme to grope the only major female character... jeez, there’s a lot of groping in these movies. Good thing Sammo is supernaturally likable. He’s also, despite the numerous jokes at the expense of his girth (his character is named “Big Guts”, although characters claim not very convincingly that it refers to his bravery), supernaturally gifted as a physical performer. Although if you compare him to Jackie Chan, another supernaturally gifted physical performer with whom he collaborated frequently, you can distinguish their particular comic presences. Jackie in Sammo’s movies is allowed to be cool, and in his own movies is hapless but somewhat dignified, like Buster Keaton. Sammo never gets to be cool in Chan’s movies, and here, he actually brings to mind Lou Costello with his over-the-top fearful reactions.
Which means that as a horror comedy, this invites comparison to Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein, in that it treats the horror elements with some degree of straightfacedness despite situating a comedy within these elements. Supposedly spooky stuff happens, but the joke isn’t that the spooky stuff itself is funny, it’s how Sammo reacts to it. This is an early hopping vampire movie and precedes the one I’m most familiar with, Mr. Vampire. Now, my memory of that is a little hazy, but while the latter movie is certainly packed with action and comedy, this one seems more interested in the aesthetics of horror movies. You can see this from the opening sequence, which takes the usually heavily stylized training sequences that usually open these movies and drapes it in dark colours and throws in spooky monsters instead of the usual poor bastards who get their asses kicked in these scenes. And then all the scenes where Sammo encounters hopping vampires, zombies and other supernatural forces, shot in atmospheric blue lighting.
So you get all this spooky stuff and all this funny stuff, but because this is a Hong Kong action movie from the ‘80s directed by Hung, you also get one great set piece after another. There’s a certain frisson you get from the dissonance between the meticulousness of the direction and choreography and the sheer silliness of what’s being depicted, that seems so bountiful in Hong Kong action comedies but seems so rare elsewhere. Any weekend where I put on a movie with Sammo or his friends is a good one. If anything, these scenes are so frequent and consistent that the effect becomes a little numbing, but as I alluded to earlier, the final confrontation ramps up the brutality and chases it with a shockingly tasteless punchline. Meaning that the movie ends on...maybe not a high note, but certainly an exclamation mark.

Anthony's Stupid Daily Blog (691): Tue 6th Feb 2024
I spent the day watching all the Futurama movies and was happy to discover how well they all still stand up. I was so happy when I found out that Futurama was coming back as a series of direct to DVD movies as I'd been severely deflated by the series run being so cruelly and stupidly cut short. How could those doodoo brains at Fox not realize what a gem of a show they had on their hands. I'm guessing that the ratings weren't what they were expecting but I bet The Simpsons took a few years to find an audience too, if they'd have just given it time to blossom I'm sure they would have been happy with the results. The first movie Bender's Big Score is perhaps the crowning achievement of Futurama in terms of writing because it's so well plotted out and self referential. It might be the best full length adaptation of a television series I've ever seen. Also watching these movies gave me inspiration for yet another tattoo. As you know I like to combine ideas when it comes to tattoos and The Beast With A Billion backs begins with a short psychedelic credit sequence featuring the Planet Express ship done up in the colours of the Yellow Submarine which looks absolutely beautiful. I'm a huge Beatles fan and now thanks to Futurama I have inspiration for a tattoo which combined two of my great passions. I now have several ideas for tattoos that I can put on my left upper arm along with the V For Vendetta symbol and the Buster Keaton poster. After the Richie and Eddie tattoo on my bicep I can get this Futurama / Beatles tat next to the V symbol and then get the image of Philip K Dick's face underneath that. After that I'm planning on getting the Bart Simpson raven and the Kodama from Princess Mononoke perched on Buster's camera. By the end of the year the top of my left arm should look very colorful indeed and I'll have made great progress on my dream sleeve tattoo. I tuned into tonight's Hollyoaks which culminated in Dilly (MY GOD SHE'S SO FUCKING FIT) grappling with Sienna at the top of the stairs and eventually being knocked off and landing on top of a piano. I've seen plenty of cartoons where pianos get dropped on people but this must be the first time someone has dropped a person on a piano. I'm also not sure how the fuck this happened because there was quite a high barrier at the top of those stairs so Sienna must have either uppercutted Dilly like a Popeye cartoon or she must have scooped her up and flung her over like Hulk Hogan slamming Andre the Giant. Elsehwere "Kitty" continues to settle in to her new life posing as her dead friend but because I've just realized that Kitty sounds like Leigh Francis' portrayal of Christina Aguilera in Bo Selecta and now the character is ruined for me.

Sight and Sound’s Greatest Films of All Time watch challenge #2 - The General (film =95 out of 100)
It feels a little weird to follow up Get Out with 1927’s silent film comedy The General, in which Buster Keaton plays a train conductor from Georgia during the Civil War. The film, directed by Keaton and Clyde Bruckman, could essentially be seen as one of the first action movies, featuring train chases and war sequences all with Keaton’s incredibly expressive physical comedy. Keaton and Bruckman reportedly shot over 200,000 feet of film, which makes sense considering how many moving setpieces there are throughout. All in all, I can see why it has kept making the Sight and Sound list each decade, even if it has dropped in ranking each time. It really is such an incredible feat of filmmaking with lots of great humor in it. The film itself opens with an incredible punchline: Buster Keaton’s train is called General.
This film flopped terribly when it was first released to theatres and it’s interesting that it has received such a huge reappraisal in the years since. However, as progress keeps getting made and more voices are being added to the conversation both as artists and critics, it’s clear to see that The General will probably not be on the Sight and Sound list in 2032. More people of colour and more women contributed to the critics’ poll than ever before, potentially explaining huge drops in ranking as what happened to The General and huge jumps in the ranking as what happened to films like Beau Travail. It’s undeniable that The General is a feat of filmmaking and an important one at that, but in the years since 2012 when the film placed 34th we have seen a huge discussion happen about the whitewashing of history and the sanitization of our country’s greatest sins. Perhaps Buster Keaton might not be on future Sight and Sound lists. Perhaps a different film of his will receive reappraisal, but despite my huge enjoyment of The General (it’s easily a 4.5 out of 5) we’ve seen so much advancement in what people can say with film. Even other films ranked much higher on the list from the same time period will have more to say about the state of the world they were made in than The General was.
