When We Drown Update #1

hello!! i’m back with the first when we drown update!

so. i’m around 8000 words into the draft. i started writing on february 15, and its currently march 20, so its already been over a month which is ... wild. time flies when ur having fun kids.

its flowed a lot smoother than crane anatomy so far. i’m really enjoying the process, since i’m not trying that hard to make it good?? i didn’t know i was capable of “not trying to make it good” but maybe i am 👀

the writing style is very different from crane anatomy. CA is very flowery, but the prose in WWD is a lot plainer. i really like both prose styles, which is why it’s nice to be able to alternate between them when i feel like writing in one and not the other.

i used to get these random line ideas when i was only writing crane anatomy, but they didn’t fit the prose of that book. i’ve realized that those lines fit perfectly into the style of this book so yay my children found a home <3

excerpts under the cut.

chapter 1: the lighthouse

the story opens on a lighthouse on new years eve, 1999. this was an image that popped in my head while i was brainstorming and i decided to jump in and start writing because i was Intrigued. it’s a snowy night, and a woman and her four-year-old son (elias) are on the run from other members of the cult she is part of. we see her finally picking up the courage to run away, because unfortunately in this cult leaving isn’t allowed and they want to kill her. this is why she’s so depressed all the time because :) cult trauma :) they escape from their pursuers by hiding in the lantern room of a lighthouse, and then the woman gives birth to a daughter, the protagonist. her brother, elias, is referred to as “you”, and even though she wasn’t born yet, april narrates this scene because she’s been told the story so many times that she thinks of it almost like a memory, sometimes she wonders if she actually does remember it slightly.

the first line:

The first time I met you was on the lighthouse. It was the midwinter of 1999, new years eve, five p.m., already dark. I wasn’t born yet.

i quite like this opening! every opening i’ve written for the last four books has been good so that’s good

anyway here’s some night ocean and moon imagery:

The black ocean dilated in a gauzy breeze far below, waves ruffling like crow’s feathers. The distant sloshing drowned out some of the noise of the men’s boots clattering on the stairs. A cloud slipped in front of the moon, puddling its glow.

then the woman and elias hide under some tarps in the lantern room and the men who are hunting them come and look for them and somehow don’t find them which is completely unrealistic but :) if they got found april would never be born so :) that wouldn’t work would it :)

and then the men leave and april is born in the lantern room which was the most aesthetic birth i could think of okay. i had to. also the new years fireworks start going off:

We slept in the lantern tower. The beam that guided sailors lanced over our heads, a pinprick you hardly noticed. The fireworks all burst at once – a blur of  orange, green and blue lights popcorning in the dark. I was tiny, too skinny, I shouldn’t have survived the night, but I did. Mother told me years later that I was the last baby of the 20th century, and that made me lucky.

chapter 2: lacuna

this is a chapter that takes place years later (and covers the first nine years of april’s life) and talks about her awful childhood. her older brother, elias, is her only friend other than two other girls (Elena and Magnolia). lets just say her life is terrible and i’m v happy i’m not her!

Mother always said I looked like her, and you looked like our father. I never thought so, even though I’d never seen pictures of him. Mother never showed us any. I couldn’t bring myself to associate you with him. From what I’d heard of father, you and him were opposites, different entities, born in different worlds and buried in different graveyards.

and their mother tells the story of april’s birth so often that april thinks of it as a memory, which is why she was able to narrate it:

She retold the story of my birth so frequently that every detail was visceral in my mind: the snow sparkling in juts of moonlight, a lonely rowboat almost invisible in the dark sea, the footsteps thudding along the passage, fireworks sparking in the sky and lighting the night on fire.

chapter 3: found and lost

in chapter three, ten-year-old april and fourteen-year-old elias play hide and seek and april fails to find elias. he is unfortunately never seen again.

the first line of the chapter:

There was a stretch of time when life was at its fullest, even if, for me, that meant half-empty. Ten years old, you were fourteen. Still friends, we didn’t share the usual sibling rivalry. It was midwinter, four days before my birthday. Ice glossed the branches of the spindly elm trees that studded our quiet street, scabbed the pavement so it was hard to walk.

yes i know this is set in BC and it doesn’t snow that much here but the aesthetic was too perfect so this is apparently an alternate BC where it snows a lot <3

another brief lighthouse description:

The lighthouse was a pinnacle that made an incision in the sky, clouds spiralled around it. Close enough to walk, too far to see in detail. Its lonely beam jittered over the water, even in broad daylight.

april counts and then goes to look for elias

Snow crinkled in my mittens, numbed my fingers so I could hardly move them. Rice-paper clouds obscured most of the sun, so the light that dribbled through was watery and lukewarm.

but she can’t find him

I searched every corner of the forest, every backyard of every stranger, I searched the lighthouse where I was born, I searched the rim of the ocean, which churned like a flame, licking the sand, eating it, spitting it out. The world snowglobed around me, disorientating every thought and movement. No birds, no beasts, no you. In that frozen world I was alone. The sky melted into a deep Aegean blue, and the stars winked like exit wounds, every tear an ocean, every finger an ice cap. Tears shuddered down my cheeks. They shattered on the icy pavement as I walked home, hoping you would hop out from behind a tree, a house. Maybe you were already home, maybe this was all a joke.

and time passes and they still can’t find him

Everyone said you must have drowned, even though they searched the ocean floor for days and never found your body. Maybe it had already drifted beyond our reach, they said. Maybe you were eaten by something, and your remains coated the mouth of some sea monster long assumed to be extinct.

at the end of chapter three, there’s a scene break that flashes forward to when april is fourteen, walking along the beach in a mist, and she sees elias’s ghost for the first time, and is momentarily convinced that he’s still alive, just like she thought.

It was almost unnoticeable, the way you popped up. A face in my peripheral, probably just a memory in the corner of my mind. But when I looked, you were there: a pearly mist with a face, eyes, a mouth. You breathed daylight, basked in fog like a natural habitat. I stared, unsure of what you were, where you were. Was this it? Had I been right all along? You were here, drifting in front of me, disembodied but still very much alive.

chapter 4: gooseberries

short flashback chapter! i wrote this entire chapter in about half an hour. its only 700 words, but i’m a very slow writer and that’s a lot of words for me to write in such a short time. also this chapter helped me realize that i want to write this book non-linearly! i love non-linear books and i think its a perfect form for this book!

the flashback goes to when april is still a baby (i know she shouldn’t be able to remember this but? she just does okay) and their mother takes her and elias to the woods and they hide in the roots of this tree while she goes and gets stuff for them to eat: gooseberries and pine needles (had to look up an article about edible wilderness food). april chokes on a gooseberry and elias helps her, which creates trust, and distrust of the mother because she didn’t try to help at all. thats it thats the chapter. not entirely happy with this, it needs a lot of work, but i think its still necessary to keep in the book for now.

She left, and like a mother bird, found food and brought back heaps of veiny gooseberries, her pockets stuffed with red pine needles, which she knew were edible from a wilderness survival course she took in high school. I had no teeth back then, the craggy flesh of my gums wasn’t enough to chew berries or pine needles, my throat too frail to swallow.

that’s all i have for this update! i know i said in the wip intro that there wouldn’t be updates very often, but i think the next WWD update will be soon because i’m really in flow atm!

•Noct tries to talk to Prompto about his excessive exercise and seemingly lack of appetite but Noctis’s awkwardness and his unintentional nonchalant attitude, doesn’t help and Prompto just ignores his friends concerns.

•however, one day Prompto passes out while running and is rushed to the hospital.

•it’s only then, he’s given the shocking news; He’s Pregnant! Not just that, he’s already a month Pregnant!

•he’s in shock and disbelief at first. How could that happ-

•oh yeah he had sex (duh)

•to make a long story short, Prompto was at a party, met someone, was getting along great and...well yeah you guess the rest xD (tbh I’m not comfortable or good at describing sex scenes, so I’m not gonna torture you guys 😅)

•after that, Prompto never saw (or heard) from them again.

•Gladio was like “Welp, it least you got laid!”

• meanwhile Noctis and Ignis: 👨‍🦯👨‍🦯

•Now, in a hospital bed, with the news that he’s Pregnant, Prompto feels alone, confused and scared. So he, reluctantly, turns to his friends for help.

•Noctis jaw was on the floor, he wanted it to be a joke. It wasn’t a joke.

•Ignis, being the most calmest and levelheaded, tells Prompto to try to contact the baby’s other parent (can you tell I’m trying to be gender neutral? What can I say I love my he’s, she’s, and they’s 🥰)

•Out of stress Prompto begins to cry :’(

Eight Months: She’s already kicking. Literally!

•Seriously, She’s the most active baby the Doctor’s ever seen!

•lris decides to make a baby shower for Prompto. The plan is simple:

•Ignis makes the food. (So many new Recipeh’s)

•Noctis keeps Prompto distracted. It’s not that hard as it sounds, he takes Prompto to a Chocobo farm!

•all tho, Prompto can’t ride the Chocobros cause he might fall and hurt himself and his unborn daughter, but he’s really enjoying himself. The plan is going smoothly.

•meanwhile Gladio decorates with the material he’s given because Iris doesn’t trust him to bring his own.

•it’s small and not many people came but hey! It’s the thought that that counts.

•Noct gets a text to bring Prompto to the party. The plan is going great!

•Prompto was so moved by all the hard work and the effort his friends made, that he balled his eyes out.

•it went great! They eaten the delicious food (THATS IT! GRANDMA IGNIS ACTIVITY!)

•the gifts were adorable ☺️

•Noct’s gift (note: lris had to drag Noct to a baby store, so she and Noct could get a gift. Much to Noct’s embarrassment) was Rare Black Chocobo plush!

•Nine Month: The last month. The doctor was put Prompto on bed rest. Don’t walk around too much, try to stay hydrated.

•Noctis has to come over to look after Prompto during the last days of his Pregnancy.

•to say Prompto is nervous would be an understatement!!

•he’s sooo scared to feel what labor is like. He knows it’s extremely painful. Yeah he’s having a c-section but....

•Wait! WHAT WILL THE C-SECTION FEEL LIKE?!?!?

•he wouldn’t have to wait long...

•during the night, Prompto was having a hard time sleeping, due to some back pain (you know where this is going...)

•trying to get up, Prompto feels something wet.

•”NOCT!”

•”what I was drea-“

•”Prompto...did your water break?!”

•”I-I don’t know!!”

•unsure what to do, Noct (panicking) calls Ignis.

•”IGGY! I THINK PROMPTO’S WATER BROKE? MAYBE? I DON’T KNOW!”

•Noct calls the midwife, she tell him to bring Prompto to the hospital.

•They figure out pretty quickly that, the baby is coming NOW!

•poor Noct, sitting in the waiting room with a pajama top on and unclean pants (no shoes btw) hoping that it would go well and nothing happen to Prompto and his niece.

•after for what seems like forever, A nurse comes out with a small bundle in his arms.

•”He wanted you to hold her.”

•Noct was stunned. In his arms with Prompto’s baby girl!

•and she was the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen!

•this tiny little thing, has his blond hair, blue eyes, even his freckles! She was the cutest thing ever!!

•Noct even shed a tear. He’s definitely not telling anyone about that.

30 Minutes Earlier

•Prompto just woken up. He passed out after he heard her cries.

•now, waking up; he wants to see his baby girl.

•once he sees her again, he basically falls in love all over again.

•Crying while her eyes were looking at his.

•”Hi there...nice to meet you.”

•She cooed in response. OMG.

•everyone else fell in love with her too.

•”She’s Adorable.”

•”hard to believe she’ll grow up so big.”

•she was basically welcome with open arms.

•over the years, shes basically a mini version of Prompto with a bit of a shy streak.

•She LOVES chocobos and love to ride them with her Daddy ^^

•Noct is basically her second favorite person. She’s almost always falling asleep on him. He’s not complaining tho.

•btw, that Black Chocobo toy? It’s her absolute favorite.

•Ignis has to be her third favorite.

•she always refers to him as Mama Iggy. Much to Iggy’s embarrassment.

•She likes helping him cook. She’s a little mini helper and even passes out food. Ignis greatly appreciates the help.

•Gladio gives the best piggy back rides!

•she helps him a little with his exercise.

•Prompto and his Daughter are the closest you’ll ever see.

•she’s his rock and he’s her Father.

•When he finds out his origins and his “Father” he doubt downs to make sure he’s never like him. Period.

•After Noct disappears, She’s helps him get ready for Noctis’s eventual return.

•while getting stronger herself.

•When Noctis returns (and brings back the light) he’s shocked and happy to see that Prompto’s Daughter, has not changed much (besides age)

•she now helps around the Citadel.

•Prompto? Well

•Prompto is truly great full for having his daughter in his life.

the problem with travel:

right off the bat, same.

traveling does always make me feel like i'm starting a new chapter and i should act accordingly.

love "kill the kid stuff, start to act my numbers" - the choice of words you use when writing is so important. (thats why i cant judge anyone who spends a long ass time on thesaurus! sometimes writing really does feel like looking through a lost & found or fishing the right word out of a goodwill bin! flipping through a magazine in search for the right word to cut out and stick on your collage!) imagine how substantially different the poem would sound if limon had written "start to act my age" instead of "start to act my numbers"

this^ part kills me in a good way

accident report in the tall, tall weeds:

"my ex got hit by a bus"

gets right to the point. kinda like a short story? an immediate jump into action

Well, lmao Cat now, I'm the one who's late in replying, but yeah, I've been really busy. Now, I've got a bit of a time to reply to your ask.

First of all, "Don't You Wonder, Sometimes?" by Tracy Smith is a really interesting poem especially centred around Bowie. I love how the poet makes Bowie into a mythical being, like a sort of a spirit rather than a mortal man.

"Not God, exactly. More like-

Some thin-hipped glittering Bowie-being"

I love how the poem takes in the spirit of Bowie as something that will keep living on -

"Saying nothing is lost, that everything lives on waiting only

To be wanted back badly enough?

Bowie will never die. Nothing will come for him in his sleep

Or charging through his veins. And he’ll never grow old,"

It's just a beautiful way to think of the artist living on despite their death. They live through those they have touched with their art as well as their art themselves.

And I just simply love these lines ^^^ . I love the poem touches up on reincarnation. It's interesting as it mentions how people are reincarnated a few times and then, they go to the beyond.

And finally, I love how the deification fo Bowie continues making him into a cryptid? That's the best way I can describe it honestly.

Also, I've been reading some more stuff to rec them and to hear your thoughts on them. It's all food - themed because I really got into food poetry last week. And as I was talking to a lovely mutual about the intimacy of cooking food and feeding someone.

(AN: First read this before jumping into the fic, it’s info for it!!

So I got a request for a Lady and the Tramp Dabi x Reader (Which is almost done although it’ll be in two parts, since it’s so long... TuT;) and I got hit with a flood of ideas. So, uh, this was born yay! Dunno if anyone will like it but I’m still gonna keep up on it either way lol Get ready for a lot of introduction, Dabi shows up towards the end of this chapter XD) 

Part 2: TBA

       The kingdom of Musutafu is known far and wide as the largest and most prosperous of all the land; it houses both nobles and royals alike, the common areas popular for their trade and shopping, and the king, Toshinori, is well known for his kind nature. While still standing tall and proud many look up to the man, referring to him as the greatest king that's ruled over there land.

       Nestled in the main city is the (L/n) manor where the nobles (Fa/n) (L/n) and his wife (M/n) (L/n) reside with their 3 daughters (F/n), (first sister), and (second sister). The family is well known for both their business involved in creating top of the line armor, specifically made of rare materials that take weeks to find, and their beautiful daughters, both of which are key reasons so many other families have flocked to them throwing their sons into the pile of suitors wanting at least one daughter's hand in marriage. While her sisters have found fitting men (F/n) is less fortunate. Nearly every single one has either been turned down by her father, clearly only interested in her money, or just not her type. It's frustrating, and sometimes she wonders what it would be like to not be connected to money and power. She's even considered leaving home, maybe becoming a trader in the commoners district, but living a sheltered life and not knowing anything beyond royal parties and courting and fancy meals, she isn't sure how well she'd make it.

       Waking up like she does everyday in her plush, queen sized bed the young woman stares up at her ceiling debating on getting up or not. She's supposed to meet a suitor today, one that her father set up without her knowing until yesterday. She tries to be nice and courteous at the very least every time, they did come to visit so even under those pretenses it's the least she could do (unless they're like the young lord she met last me, ugh... then she drops the niceties and nearly kicks them out with her actual foot.)

       After at least 10 minutes of lying there in a daze she gets up and yawns, stretching and shifting to get out of her bed. It takes about an hour to get ready simply because her mother orders the maids to do up her hair and makeup while also dressing her in a gown that's way too fancy for this occasion (in (F/n)'s opinion).

       Coming down into the dining hall once she's ready (F/n) greets,"Good morning..." with a yawn, her mother shaking her head when she sits down.

       "How many times have I told you ladies cover their mouth when they yawn, and also try to quiet them?"

       (F/n) gives her a tired look before digging into her breakfast. She tries to be ladylike, since her mother will chastise her more if she isn't, and takes small bites, holding her silverware correctly, etcetera. She can feel the overbearing glances from her mother and father while they eat, her sisters keeping up the conversation while (F/n) stays quiet and focuses on her food. She's too lost in thought about the meeting today; This is a bigger and more well known man than before, being apart of the council, the royals who come together in the castle and have meetings to make decisions the king either can't decide on or doesn't have time for.

       The man is Lord Enji Todoroki; his bloodline has been known for generations due to not only their heroic tales of glory or war victories but also their dragon blood allowing them to become the beasts. He's bringing his prodigy son, Shouto, whom she's met before, he's nice although not the most talkative unlike his older siblings. But his father she doesn't trust nearly as much. His wife supposedly went mad and splashed her son with boiling water, his eye scarred from the ordeal years ago, but word has also spread (you have to be careful who you say it around) that his eldest disappeared too after an 'incident'.

       (F/n) doesn't know the details, no one seems to know what happened to him but everyone knows better than to talk about it.

       "Are you ready, (F/n)?" Her father asks breaking her out of her thoughts. She looks at him and nods, forcing a smile and setting her silverware down. He returns the grin and adds,"Todoroki, will be here shortly so-"

       A servant entering the room quiets him and they look, the man saying,"Lord Todoroki has arrived, sir, and he and master Shouto are waiting in the study."

       "Ah, perfect, thank you Hans," (Fa/n) replies, the servant bowing before leaving. (F/n) takes in a deep breath, standing and patting her gown. Her father stands too, saying,"This could be it, (F/n), give it your all dear."

       While she agrees her eyes have trouble meeting her dad's as she turns and leaves, going to the study to greet her guests.

       The meeting starts out well, at least, (F/n) sitting across from the two royal men and trying to sit up straight and keep eye contact while they talk. Shouto is much easier to talk to than his father, (F/n) less stiff when he asks a question or replies. But she can clearly see who's leading this meeting.

       "Your family hasn't offered much on the table, (L/n), if it weren't for the business we wouldn't be having this meeting today," Enji remarks, (F/n) biting her lip and taking a breath before replying.

       "Well, your lordship, I truthfully do not know what my father has spoken to you about but if your son and I were to marry I can promise you we'd come to some sort of agreement."

       "Hmmm... I see," is all he says back, and she fidgets with her dress. He's very difficult to talk to, the way his intense gaze seems to be sizing her up. She can feel his disapproval, but for their families he seems to know a marriage would be very beneficial. (F/n) glances at Shouto; he looks like he's having about as much fun as her. She always can tell he doesn't want to be around his father, she can't blame him.

       "A-Anyways, Shouto, I heard your magic was getting much better too," she speaks up, the younger man nodding and softly smiling. He likes talking about his magic, she's noticed, unless his father is boasting about how powerful he is and how he'll be the next king for sure.

       "Yes, thanks to Ochako I've learned to master more spells, especially some of the more difficult out there-"

       "Not that he needed the help of some witch," Enji scoffs, arms crossed. "I have told you before, Shouto, the court mage has been looking to train you and I believe it would be better for you to take that over a girl."

       Shouto narrows his eyes but doesn't bite back, instead taking a deep breath. "I have also practiced more in my dragon form, I can control my elements better than I could last time we met."

       "If you'd like I'd very much like to see it today if we have time." (F/n) smiles warmly, ignoring the tense atmosphere.

       Things seem fine for another few minutes before Enji once more speaks up, cutting (F/n) off as she's talking to Shouto.

       "I have something to ask, (L/n)," she looks at him confused, stiffening at the expression he has. His intense cerulean orbs leave her feeling small, but they look suspicious, the (hair color) haired woman hoping she didn't say anything wrong. "I had heard your father telling one of the other nobles that the business would be going to your cousin, Izuku, is that correct?"

       For once she can't think of a response, eyes wide and the noble clearly confused. 'I-I never heard about this...' She thinks, swallowing. "I... I didn't know about this... Did my father say it directly?"

       "I had overheard them talking about it, I do not know the details but this will unfortunately put an end to this courting if that is the case," He admits without any hesitation. Shouto actually looks at his dad in shock while (F/n) is more taken back by hearing that her father said this. She's the oldest and has been getting taught about how to run everything since she was 14, so why...?

       "Father, you can't just stop it over something like this...!" Shouto tries to argue it but Enji is not one to back down once he's made a decision.

       "She is of no worth to us otherwise, she does not know magic, she's just a noble woman. The Todoroki's produce powerful offspring, we need wives who can give us that and more," He cuts the young man off, this striking a chord with the already upset noble herself. Standing abruptly she breaks the niceties.

       "Who are you to judge, sir? I'm sorry if I am unworthy of your bloodline, but to be honest I wouldn't want to continue it if you are going to be my father-in-law! I am sorry, Shouto, I suppose you'll have to show me your magic some other time where we aren't being roped together against our wills," she snaps, giving the white and red haired heir a sad look before glaring at his father and storming off out of the room. The two nobles sit there, Shouto feeling a strange tightness in his chest but also impressed someone stood up to his father, while Enji is more taken back although anger is quickly growing in his bones.

       When the servant comes looking for them he jumps back when the noble pushes past him storming out of the manor, his son not too far behind although admittedly not wanting to go home just yet.

       (F/n), meanwhile, is off hunting down her father.

       "You're giving it all to Izuku?" (F/n) asks the moment she finds (Fa/n), the man looking at her puzzled before it disappears and he's rubbing his neck, turning away from her.

       "Enji told you?" He asks, also having a feeling this suitor won't work out either. But with Izuku taking on the armory giving his daughter away to a man of power is more, in his mind, for her own happiness, no longer in hopes to continue the family business.

       "Yes, he did, and he was not very happy himself when he imagined giving his son to someone so unworthy," she replies bitterly, crossing her arms. He pinches the bridge of his nose annoyed but the hurt in his daughter's voice next catches him off guard. "You... Are really giving everything to Izuku? E-Even though I've been working towards being the next to take it over?" She's always known her father has favored the green haired boy, even if he tries to hide it. Most of the time she tries not to think about it but this time is different.

       "(F/n), you have to understand... Izuku has been training under king Toshinori, he's worked with armor and weapons in the past, and, well-"

       "You will always favorite him," She cuts him off, her father looking taken back but also not defending himself. The hurt on her face is no longer masked and she meets his eyes. "He's special, I understand, so are my sisters, I love them too but... But... I'm you're child too!" He doesn't argue, he has no place to, and she shakes her head; turning the woman rushes out of the room, heading for her own.

       After a few hours of cooling down everyone gathers for dinner, although she eats quickly before hiding away back in her room.

       "I'll never be the child he wants... Maybe I'll go stay at Tsu's, get my mind off of everything..."

       Thus when night falls and everyone is in bed she grabs the bag she packed, currently dressed in a gown with a cloak over it, the hood of said item over her head hiding her face. She wears her flats and hides the necklace around her neck with her family's symbol on it under her clothing. Leaving her room she checks the hall before taking a less occupied, quieter route  to reach the servants quarters. Leaving out the servants entrance she luckily slips away with little to no problems and holding her bag tightly she hurries away.

       Unfortunately her friend lives near the lower areas of the Common Area, and with all the guards she has to take back streets and hide so she isn't seen. Being so sheltered is not in her favor, as she has no idea she's being closely followed and watched until she goes to leave an alley but is pulled back in suddenly.

       "Wh-Wha-" she's muffled by a dirty, large hand. Her (e/c) eyes are wide, the woman freezing up seeing 3 men; the one holding her is on the scruffier side, looking quite a bit older than her and smelling of booze; the one to the right is lanky but has eyes that make her shake, and the left is muscled and missing an eye. The way they eye her up has her terrified and she hopes she brought enough money to maybe appease them.

       "Look at this, guys, we got a pretty thing here, don't we?~" the one holding her grins, his rank breath brushing her face leaving her coughing into his palm and trying to turn her head away.

       "Looks like one of them rich brats, too, check 'er bag!" the scrawny one adds trying to pry her bag from her hold. He succeeds and backs up, (F/n) still struggling to get free. She freezes up when she's groped by the one missing an eye and she shakes her head.

       "Don't worry your pretty lil' head, we ain't lookin' to hurt ya," her holder says but the grin on his face says otherwise as they pull at her gown ready to undress her and do who knows what. She is able to open her mouth just enough to bite his hand, which luckily gets him to pull it back with a,"You lil' bitch-"

       "HELP!" She cries out, hoping someone, anyone will come to her aid before they do anything else.

       The dirty man she bit doesn't hesitate to slap her, causing (F/n) to fall over from the impact, but as he goes to kneel down the scrawny one whispers,"Ah shit, the Tramp!" All 3 stiffen and look at the alley entrance, (F/n) shaking on the ground hand covering her cheek and tears brimming in her eyes. Shakily she opens them when a new voice speaks up,"At it again, boys? Thought I told you 3 this was my area but I guess trash doesn't stay where it belongs."

       She takes in his odd appearance while also wondering if he came to help her or not; his black hair looks wild yet soft to the touch, his bright blue eyes seem to glow in the dim lighting, and she can make out purple scars decorating his body kept together with his normal, pale skin by staples. His clothes have seen better days with tears in different areas and all dark shades, 3 silver piercings sit on the bridge of his nose, and in his ears sit silver loops along the shell and turquoise colored crescent shaped loops in the lobes. He has an expression that's hard to read, although she can make out some irritation. She stares at him hoping he did come to save her, and when he looks down at her she freezes at how intense his cerulean gaze is. It reminds her of a certain noble she told off earlier today...

       His eyes shoot back up to her assailants when the scruffy leader shakily says,"D-Dabi, look, we was just tryin' to do some quick robbin' she wandered this way before we could-"

       "I don't really care what your reasons are, Haggar, just get out of here before all your wives have of you 3 are ashes," he says fluidly, this being no idle threat since the moment they hear it the 3 men are already running back down the alley as fast as they can. The man, 'Dabi', sighs pushing some of his black locks back before he turns back to the trembling woman; (F/n) has gotten up by this point, carefully meeting his eyes and feeling more intimidated by it then even Enji's. But he doesn't seem like he'll hurt her as he walks up to her bag, grabs it, and hands it back to her, (F/n) taking it and biting her lip.

       "Th-Thank you," she says, wondering if she can maybe give him gold as a way of repaying him.

       He looks her over before giving a small grin and saying,"No problem, dollface, I couldn't just stand by, could I?" She turns pink at the name and his tone, but he seems friendly, at least towards her. He starts to leave the alley and she follows almost immediately, having been shaken up by that experience and finding this need to stay close to him. He knows she's following him so he asks,"What's a noble girl doing down here this late at night? Out for a little walk but got lost?"

       "Um, well not exactly, I was going to a friend's home, in the shopping district... And I did get a bit lost, but when I actually figured out the way those men grabbed me," she replies, trying to keep up with him and peering up at him. "If it weren't for you..."

       He glances at her and can see how shaken up she still is, deciding to give a lazy grin and keep up this friendly facade by saying,"Like I said, I couldn't just let those rats hurt a doll like you, good thing I was passing by when you screamed." He hums, getting an idea and stopping to look down at the young woman. "The shopping district is a bit far for you to walk to this late, plus you look pretty exhausted. If you'd like you can stay at my home until morning, it's about 5 minutes from here."

       Despite a little voice telling her not to take the offer (F/n) is too tired to argue or deny him, so nodding she smiles and says,"I-I don't see why not, that's very thoughtful, thank you... Dabi, correct?"

       He nods, starting to walk again. She drags a little behind him, adding,"My name is (F/n), it's nice to meet you." She leaves out her last name, after all she doesn't know Dabi so mentioning her family line could be a bit troublesome. He looks over his shoulder at her and smirks before looking ahead.

       He'll keep up the friendly facade, for now, she seems naive to this side of town. 'As long as I keep up the act she'll be easy puddy in my hands.' He thinks, already knowing who she is, how much her family is worth, and planning on an easy chance to gain quite a bit out of this and finally get out of this city.

       All he has to do is reel her in.

(AN: Okay so almost 3 days working on this one chapter, it's finally done. Sorry it's super long, had to get it goin' y'know? Honestly I dunno how much attention this will get, or if anyone will like it, but it sounded like a fun idea so I'm still gonna write it lol

(There’s a pun to made here about us “warming up to Thaw” but sadly I am not smart enough to make it.)

The Chapter of Necessary Filler & the Obligatory Cliffhanger

I love that Isayama isn't rushing everything and is actually focusing on little details and small interactions between characters. He really isn't glorifying an "apocalyptical scenario" just for the sake of destruction in itself or shock value.

This chapter felt like a nostalgia trip, but I wasn't in for the ride.

This chapter was a breath of fresh air ngl. These past chapters were mostly full of either a flashback, monologue or just having two characters talking in a realm where nothing happens and time is frozen, but, at last, the plot is moving foward in the real world too. Not only it contained long gone titan action, but also great character development/moments as well. I missed this.

I'm not so much disappointed with Connie in this moment as I am with the direction his character arc has gone lately in general. I miss when he was fun instead of angry all the time.

I think everyone is acting super irrational. Eren is going to destroy the world but all the SC are "accepting" of it. I think deep down they are all horrified and in a completely insane mental state causing irrational decisions and thoughts such as Jean being okay with genocide.

I understand that Connie is desperate to find a comfort after all the ppl he lost, but I'm still extremely disappointed in him for wanting to murder a child. Not just Connie tho, the same goes for Jean and Armin. Armin didn't say "Let's not kill a freaking child" he just objected because he didn't want to provoke Reiner and Pieck.

Gabi’s design is based on Eren, and she’s had similarities and parallels to him in the past, what does the parallel in this chapter mean stacked on top of all of that?  About 70% say it’s to further emphasize how similar she is to him at her core.  12.7% don’t think it was an intentional parallel to that Eren scene, 7.7% say she’s going to receive his titan, and a solid 1% wrote in the eloquent thesis of “Fuck Gabi.”

Both have the common factor of determination and the desire to fight to save someone else. "Fight, fight" = "Like I'd give up" In Eren's case, his scene in the mirror is portrayed in a darker, more aggressive environment, he must fight to save his loved ones, but for this goal he must destroy everything. On the other hand, Gabi shows a more heroic/pure attitude, the light is predominant, and his words refer to the desire to fight to save Falco without taking this violence path unlike Ere

I didn't like any parallels that include Gabi. Not this one, and most certainly not the one with Sasha.

It definitely foreshadows something, but I don't think it's that she'll inherit his titan. I think she's going to be the one to end this madness and break the cycle. Unlike Eren, who fights for freedom both for himself and his loved ones, Gabi will fight for peace and equality: a different kind of freedom.

It symbolizes Gabi's character arc starting to go in the opposite direction of Eren, rather than showing them being similar.

It symbolizes Gabi's change in motivation to do anything to save her friends. Just as Eren's motivation in the mirror scene really marked the moment he turned genocidal to protect his friends.

A chapter in the endgame that’s almost reminiscent of the defense of Trost with respect to mindless titan action and defending a base.  Despite many other happenings such as the rumbling going on currently, 46% were totally fine with the focus on mindless titan action and thought it was written well, whereas 35.6% enjoyed it, but wished there was a bit more beyond checking that box.  10.8% wanted a larger focus on the titans in the rumbling, and 5.5% would have preferred a focus shift away from Shiganshina entirely.

I love the fact that shows how prepared and easy fighting mindless titans is for them now. When the titans attacked Trost they were hopeless and Jean was the one frozen in fear. Now we get to see him clear up the titans with ease.

I think showing smaller happenings before the big reveal of Eren's titan and the effects of the rumbling are important buildup.

I would have rather focused on what's happening to Pieck and the others near the wall.

I didn't feel that was the focus, but either way, I liked it.

I wish more would’ve happened outside of it BUT it’s important to show them being dealt with otherwise readers would be like “wait, what about all those people who turned into titans?” So not the best, but necessary.

I'm not crazy about fighting scenes, I prefer the ones where they discuss stuff, but these were really emotional with Shadis and Pixis and everything. Like, it wasn't even so much about fighting itself, for me at least, but about Shadis uniting people again and Armin setting Pixis free finally.

I wish the chapter had explored the idea of Titans appearing now that the Military has begun using weapons which are more effective against humans than Titans. I had thought that the reappearance of Titans would do much more damage since the Military is no longer equipped to handle such threats.

Reminds me of the Trost arc and I love it, but it will probably end up being the last time we see pure titans as this much of a threat.

That is, it can turn Pure Titans back into humans, but if it did, it would happen to ALL Pure Titans, not just a specific group of them. It's possible that is how the Fritz royalty used the Pure Titans while maintaining the Eldian population during ancient times. Here, if Eren were to use that aspect of the Founding Titan's power, both the Military Branch Officer Titans AND the Wall Titans would be turned back into humans. Right now, Eren is bent on using the Wall Titans to flatten the World, so he most likely does not want to use the power of the Founding Titan to turn all the Pure Titans in Shingashina + Connie's mom into humans; otherwise, the Wall Titans would turn into humans again too, and that would ruin his rumbling plan.

Regarding Eren and the mindless titans, control issues aside, I just don't think he cares.

Same goes for Keith, though in this chapter he shows courage by stepping up to push the trainees to fight, I doubt he is willing to go back into a similar position as he was before as the Survey Corp's commander. Among the candidates, Armin may seem like a promising candidate, but aside from his proven intellect, just like Hange both do not possess the level of prowess of leading all three branches (four if count the training squad)of the military. More I think about it the "best" candidate in this list may surprisingly be Jean, but so far he hasnt been giving me the impression as someone who can take on such a massive role.

The fandom is fairly divided on Floch’s motives, with a three-way split that comes close to being even. The highest amount of respondents feel he is arresting the Volunteers because he doesn’t trust them based on past actions. In the middle, people feel that he doesn’t want to be associated with any non-Eldian people. And in third place, people felt that he doesn’t trust Yelena specifically, and is taking her group down with her.

As far as I've seen, Floch is on Eren's side, not Zeke's. So that would make Yelena, who hasn't heard about her boss and the euthanasia plan, dangerous as fuck. Even with that, Floch's following his own principles. He has different reasons than Eren, but he just needs the "devil" figure to project his own will.

He always knew Yelena and Zeke's intentions because of Eren, and now he's arresting them to prevent more trouble caused by them. I think Eren "trusts" and is working with Flcoh more than the fandom expect.

He's a completely inconsistent character whose personality and character motivations change at the drop of a hat in order to create conflict in the story.

Annie got crystalized in chapter 33, and now she's out, 91 chapters later. Since 12 chapters are published in a year, we have been waiting for her (not including flasbacks and her just chilling in the crystal) 7 years and 7 months. I salute all the diehard Annie fans, you had a long wait.

Once again I have marked my calendar. May 9, 2012 - December 5, 2019. After 7 excruciating years our queen is FINALLY awake. This deserves a new record for longest amount of time a character has been comatose in real life. Thank GOD it's finally over I still can't believe it.

I'm a big fan of all of the smaller storylines coming together, hoping for everything to be wrapped up nicely and characters from different factions (i.e Hange, Annie, Historia) all coming together to address the rumbling.

It felt a little like a breather chapter, despite all the action. It was nice to slow down and get some character development for everyone.

“Everyone has a devil in them” is a great message. Hope they all team up and stop Eren. Very curious about what Annie will do!

Great chapter! I like Pathland, and the flashback with Levi and Hanji was great, but it was a relief to get some current time action. Gabi is best girl, Armin just went up by leaps and bounds in my book, and Annie is back!! So excited for the next chapter…

Great one ! The fear from the mindless titans in back, like in Trost. Many side characters development/deaths (Nile, Pixis, Shadis, Kaya, Nicolo, Gabi, Annie, Connie, Jean...). So much good stuff, I almost forgot about the rumbling going on !!

Amazing. If Isayama maintains this quality til the end, then this will be one of my favorite series, of any media, ever.

I'm wondering what Annie can realistically do at this point. Sure she beat Eren before but now he's in another level.

Guess we don't have to deal with the genocidal jock for a while

ANNNIIEEEEE; Shadis' comeback was wonderful. I hope he can make up for the loss of Pixis and Erwin and such. He has great potential and he's a well developed character. Jean is asking the real questions, but the showdown between him and Floch is about to go down.

I said previously that if Floch survives I wanted my money back. But you know what? I'll take my refund in Annie store credit. Thanks for that bright spot, Isayama!  Also: this chapter pointed out how many good people in the world will suffer if Eren succeeds. And I felt as frustrated with the remnants of the 104th as Gabi. Nicolo and Shadis became my unexpected heroes this chapter.

Is Zeke still alive? Is he still controlling the mindless titans?

Floch didn’t do anything particularly bad this chapter but every time I have to see his face my opinion of him becomes less favorable. When Jean said “so you lived...” I FELT that disappointment lol.

I love the Braun siblings interaction in this chap. And Nicole's "we'll try to get out of the forest" sends chills. I think that's one of the point ISTM is trying to get across.

Does Connie realise that if his mother was given one of the nine titan powers she would be made to fight? Getting one of the titan powers is very much a curse not a blessing (especially with the Jaw titan)

At this point the Eren/Gabi parallels are feeling a little overdone and forced.

If Gabi receives Eren’s Titan it will be the stupidest most disappointing thing to happen in this- no all of manga! Besides, what is the damn point of her “paralleling” Eren anyways? But the Sasha paralleling was even more gnarly YUCK!

It's true that the people of Paradis will benefit from this shit, but I highly disagree with any justification when it comes to Eren's horrible actions. GENOCIDE IS NEVER THE OPTION. I think Jean is disappointed too but he's trying his best to rationalize the crap Eren's carrying out for he still doesn't want to believe his friend is committing genocide. I expect he comes back to his senses soon otherwise I no longer will appreciate him as a character.

That "who are you most disappointed" will sadly be filled with Armin hate tbh. And in the end he was just wanting to avoid unnecessary conflict... tbh Anyone hating on Connie, Gabi and Armin doesn't seems to know how humans emotion work in helpless situations...

What Yams is doing to Connie is further proof he is ruining his main characters (the good ones) to make room for his precious Marley characters (the crappy ones)

Connie's regression and frustration was more and more visible since Sasha died. He's lost everyone close to him. I am happy to see him finally snap at Armin and go his own way. This was foreshadowed for a while now.

I hope Isayama sensei doesn't forget to include World Millitary's raid in the action. They already mention in some previous chapter by Zeke.

Quantity-wise, the chapter wasn't centered around Gabi, okay. But. BUT. Gabi got quite a few powerful scenes, very Gabi-centric scenes, and I'm not happy about that. I don't see how and why the fandom so easily forgave her for what she's done. Isayama drawing parallels between Gabi and Sasha was insulting and distasteful.

It is highly likely that this is the last time we are going to see Pure Titan mayhem in the series now that the Rumbling is taking place, so I think it was great to that focus in this chapter. I thought it was handled well, especially with Shadis's scenes, the parallel of the new recruits seeing the Pure Titans peaking through the hole of the fortress tower much like a similar scene in the Trost arc, the tragedy of seeing Pixis and Nile (two of the last remaining head honchos of the military not counting Hange and Shadis) as Pure Titans and getting killed off for good, and how characters like Armin and Jean fought those Pure Titans.  

WARMASTER FLOCKE, TO LEAD THE ARMIES OF ELDIA TO VICTORY! Haha no I guess not. I'm torn between Flocke, Jean, Eren, and Shadis. All could be good picks but all outcomes would have different implications on the story and what it means. I guess if I had to pick, it'll be Shadis or Eren for now and then perhaps Jean later when things have settled and they've grown up more.

I honestly can't keep up with how many faces Floch has.

With how the pacing is handled there's no way this is ending in 6 chapters. The real climax is Eren having to go against his friends because there's no way in hell Mikasa is allowing him to genocide kids

As heartbreaking as this chapter has been, I already had my hopes destroyed when 119 was released. Today has been the confirmation for two awesome characters, who fell because of the non-veteran rule. I don't know why I still hope to see Keith staying alive, but at least we got an awesome moment of his.

Characters are being balanced relatively well. Isayama's got a lot of characters and plot threads to deal with, and while Levi, Hange and Historia are getting less focus than I would like, I think he's doing a pretty good job of keeping each character relevant and giving them all some good arcs/ moments

Everything (except for Gabi scenes) was perfect for me!

I simply hate how cowardy the 104th is acting. It's clear they're only fighting in their own interest and are just pulling excuses after excuses for supporting Eren. At least Floch is honest about it.

Man, the 104th always been the group I care the less in the story, but this chapter they're being so annoying (apart from Mikasa). Well, I can forgive Connie because of everything he went through, but Jean... why are you saying this ""there was no other choice, eren is protecting us"" bs ? Nice of you to be complicit of mass genocide. (Yes, I know his face shows he's conflicted, but he still sides with eren) Also Armin... at least he's horrified at what's Eren's doing but when he said that if they don't kill Falco there would be no conflict with the warriors since Marley will be gone....that's just dumb. Their home and families are going to be destroyed, but ok Armin, go off. And getting into another serumbowl situation, with one of my fave uncounscious while the SC decides who will eat him... I don't like it. (I don't think Falco will be eaten tho, the whole thing raised many death flags on Connie)

Great chap, Isayama seems to finally give closure to certain plot parts. End is near.

Here's a crazy idea: feed GABI to Connie's mom instead of Falco, there would be nowhere near as much arguing with that

Highlights that people can rise above their conditions to become better people, offering a counterargument that humanity should be wiped out.

I don't get why the story pacing was disrupted so much. Why build up to a climatic cliffhanger with the rumbling, only to basically ignore it for the entire following chapter?

I honestly wonder if titan shifting still works as it used to. I'm afraid of seeing Falco get eaten for nothing. Honestly I'm worried about Falco dying for nothing while people right over him as a pawn in general.

Quite interesting chapter. Had fun with it. Much, much slower paced than expected almost. But then again we need time to cover all this stuff. And I'm happy it all took place in the current rather than another flashback. Not really a fan of the Gabi stuff but it is what it is. The other character developments were quite nice. Reiner literally just falling asleep tho lol. Overall I guess I wouldn't say it's a "big" chapter but it is necessary to bridge what came before with whatever comes next. And at long last Annie is back, so that's GLORIOUS.

I hope Annie will have such a big role she gets repaid for the all years she's been gone😞

I hope Isayama uses the slowdown in the pace to better sell the scale of the rumbling, we already see part of that by hoe Eren's dino titan still isnt complete, even after all this time

I love how the story is progressing.The next chapter is always something I personally don't expect and it's always exciting. The hype at the beginning/end of the month is unreal. As for the chapter itself, it's always refreshing to see Jean's perspective on Eren's plans because I love his interpretations on him. #TEAMJAEGER

I love you Connie and I'm sure your mom is nice and all but Falco is a precious bean who needs to be protected.

I really hated the Gabi-Sasha and Gabi-Eren parallels. I also still think Gabi was never needed in this story, in fact I don’t know how I’ll be able to stomach season 4. Ugh, the first half will be completely and utterly Gabified. Gabi in color and motion plus speaking, YUCK!  Anyways I hope that the next chapter will have an update on Hange, Levi, and Historia. And maybe Floch getting punched by Shadis that would be the Cherry on top.

It was an average chapter, not bad but nowhere near as good as the previous ones. Plus I'd appreciate if other characters, outside of Gabi, had more spotlight. Her arc and development is done, give more development and screentime to other characters such as Mikasa please.

Just being disappointed. The pacing is very slow. Also the main cast's reactions were too passive. I hated it.

Love getting to see thoughts from many different characters and where they stand. A lot of them are still left behind trying to rationalise things to make it emotionally palatable, or simply stuck not being able to accept the reality, whereas Gabi has kind of gone ahead and realised there's evil on both sides, and she's willing to kill Eren or work with him if she can best protect the people she cares about (eventually probably not just her friends and family either, but the outside Eldians as a whole).

Nicolo talking to Kaya and Gabi was cringey af. Did they really do back to that derpy forest analogy? If this series ends with them holding hands and singing around a campfire imma legit be so disappointed. I need me my Rumbling!

This chapter felt like a nostalgia trip, but I wasn't in for the ride. It was a mess of short catching-up moments when I just want to pick Eren's brain. I want to see Levi and Hange alive or hear what Annie and Historia think about the events, but at the moment I don't care about even those storylines. I just want to know what the relationship between Ymir and Eren is now that the walls came down.

The first panel being Mr. Leonhart was a pretty strong indicator to me that Annie would be released in the last panel, and it was. I felt that to be extremly poetic, and the timing is good too. Another wildcard in the plot. Excellent.

Compared to the previous chapter, this one turned out to be very disappointing. I was excited to see the rumbling and getting a glimpse of Eren’s thoughts and feelings. But instead I got Reiner going to sleep, Gabi being paralleled to Eren (again) and Sasha, the 104th busy arguing over what to do with Falco instead of, you know, focusing on THE RUMBLING

Good chapter, but if S4 is the final season and airs Autumn 2020, and with a monthly release, curious as to how isayama might tie up these "last minute" plot threads such as the new developments with Connie and Falco.

What else can I say except it's amazing and it was worth the wait

"I definitely updated my list of books I was reading on tumblr so it's all good" -me, a lying liar, right before spending several months finishing my reread of All The Discworld Books I Own But In Chronological Order For The First Time Ever Which In Fact Makes A Difference.

(and then I did it again after the libraries closed)

The Left Hand of Darkness, Ursula K. Le Guin Hm, so. I definitely read this. At some point. It was not really for me, not bad, but not really for me. This particular edition had various notes before and after the text, all of which I read, which made it an experience I got more out of. It's important for me to know that the author is aware that the protagonist is a raging misogynist who's stupid, and yes this was on purpose so you'd realize how really incredibly stupid he is and thus maybe be tricked into changing your mind yourself. It is a legit tactic, but one I tend not to enjoy, so if I hadn't been forewarned I'd have been UUUUGGGGGHHHH MAKE HIM SHUT UP ALREADY and probably rage-quit. As it was, I was able to better appreciate what Le Guin was doing here, even if this book didn't win a place in my heart and I probably won't reread. I definitely preferred Ancillary Justice's take, with the feminine pronouns. For my brain, masculine pronouns = they might as well all be men = business as usual = I didn't really get any gender queering from it. I can't really remember much else now. Oh, it was also part "survival in the wilderness" story, which they're big on making you read in school (which I find very suspicious), and which I tolerated and read a few classic ones on my own until they kept assigning these kinds of stories for us to read and now I get nothing from them and mindlessly hate them. Anyway, as I said, not bad at all but not really for me.

Lavinia, Ursula K. Le Guin This one's a reread--I picked it up from the library during college because we were doing Titus Andronicus in class and it didn't occur to me that there might be more than one Lavinia???? But hey it worked out because later in college we did the Aeneid and then I had Background for rereading Lavinia. This is the book that is lyrical and beautiful and pulls me in and makes me care deeply about the world and the characters. This is the book of Le Guin's that makes me feel the way everyone else feels about Earthsea and The Left Hand of Darkness and etc. I would like to find more of Le Guin's work that makes me feel the same way, because as I've said you can really tell from her other stuff that she's a solid writer who knows her stuff. I just…don't enjoy any of the other things. Anyway I recommend. I always forget about this book, and then when I reread I'm like "wow why don't I read this more often?????"

How Long 'Til Black Future Month?, N. K. Jemisin I liked every story in this short story collection. I should just reread it and try writing this up again tbh but also tbh I'll probably do the rereading and then just not write anything up again. Just read Jemisin's stuff I love her writing so much okay. ETA: that’s exactly what I did, I reread this during my covid rereads and said “I should do a proper write-up this time” and lo and behold where is it

Tehanu, Ursula K. Le Guin Okay, this last Earthsea book treated me much better than the others. It's probably not for everyone else, which might be why it's for me. It's much more domestic, much less "plot" happening, full of introspection, and centered on women rather than men. This novel acknowledges and confronts the rampant internalized misogyny in the previous three books, engages it in a way that the misandrist in me finds satisfying even though it never comes to a good solution for the problem. This book is more like a reflection. Earthsea has never been about "light is always good, dark is always bad; be a hero, fight evil" etc. But this one I think shifts the tone a little farther; it's less about balance, and more...I guess I'd put it as, "actions have consequences." It's not concerned with right or wrong, it's concerned with people getting hurt. It's pretty somber and serious, without any humor to balance it out, tons of bad things happen to people, lots of PTSD...but this time I really cared about the characters, and I feel like it was all handled really well? In addition to critiquing internalized misogyny, it also critiqued victim blaming. Seemed like it handled disability pretty well too--was honest about how people are jerks about it in reality, while still being optimistic and treating Therru as valuable; made occasional mentions of considering work-arounds for having only one fully-functional hand, while mostly just having Therru go about living and doing chores and being capable and assuming she did find those work-arounds without having to draw attention to it; and Therru's terrible scars didn't get magically healed at the end, the whole book makes a point all the way through that her physical scars will always be with her the same way her emotional scars will be, and she's simply learned how to go on living with them. Tehanu: a book full of trauma happening to people, where what would normally be the plot in a fantasy novel ended up not even getting started to be resolved, but Le Guin's writing and handling of the subject matter helped heal my jaded soul.

Ninefox Gambit, Yoon Ha Lee A quick summary of my experience: Chapter 1 - ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh what is going on what even Chapter 2 - no, no this is just, this is what sci fi is like, right? Just give it a few chapters and then by the end of the book everything will probably make sense. I'm sure that's how it works. Remember how even in Ancillary Justice I ended up with two separate Battles of Valskay, but now everything is fine??? It's. Fine. Chapter 4 - (ohhhhhhh I still don't know what's going on) Several Chapters Later - still no clue what's going on, but hit my stride with the terminology, my foreign language instinct kicked in where words stopped sounding weird and while I could not for the life of me define any terms for you, I had a vague comprehension of how the words operated In Context. Sort of. And by then I had, without realizing it, begun page-turning and binging, so I guess I liked the book lol! Another serious-but-not-funny one, but with an extra dose of War Memoir and all the gruesomeness that entails (but probably, like any good War Memoir, probably not actually gratuitous and actually in fact the necessary amount of gruesome). Jedao was turned into a woobie at the last minute and, well, damn, guy knows the way to my heart. The novel apparently gripped me enough that I don't even mind that it only came into play at the very end of the game. And hey, there's two more novels to deal with that revelation, which I have picked up from the library to read immediately! Yay! Current personal theory: based on the heavy math references that made me want to cry at the start, but the almost entire absence of actual numbers, and a reference to "there's no way actual physics works like that, it was obviously a calendrical effect" or something…I'm going to throw out a wild guess that the calendar stuff (and all the social structuring that goes with it) is so that they can break and reinvent math. So they can effect a universe where 2+2=5 and therefore a bunch of people standing in this exact position makes a force field or bullets of rose thorns or whatever and some other dude can make himself immortal. This sounded like a pretty terrible theory already and it sounds even worse now I've typed it up but oh well.

Raven Stratagems, Yoon Ha Lee Guess who didn't write this up back when she read it!!! Also, I returned Ninefox Gambit to the library right before the libraries shut down for covid. So, I had Raven and Revenant on hand for months but I didn't have Ninefox on hand to do an immediate reread to see if that made the sci fi make more sense. (It probably wouldn't have, but I would have liked to do a rereading while the ending was still fresh.) By this time there is a lesser degree of visceral viscera. Lee is brutal, however, about continuing to be honest about what war costs and whether war is worth that cost (which depends, really, on whose lives you think matter. Very relevant for these times. Very much prepared me to shut up and not whine about the inconveniences of protests and their fallout. There is no pretty and clean way to have a revolution, since it involves destroying a particular [terrible] way of life, so we're all just gonna have to sacrifice together). Also I think by this point all the character development from the first novel paid off in the form of character dynamics being hilarious now despite, y’know, the gruesome shadow of war.

Revenant Gun, Yoon Ha Lee Continues to discuss the honest price of war and the messiness of fallout. Shuos "The risks I took were calculated, but boy am I bad at math" Jedao. Oh I think this is also the one where every so often one of the characters thinks, "Okay so this person is a tyrannical murderous dictator but he is ensuring that there will never again be food shortages and no one in the space empire ever goes hungry." And then Lee turns around and is like, "Haha but don't forget this same person invented a form of vital infrastructural technology (and also immortality) that is optionally based off ritual human torture sacrifice. Like he didn't have to do that to make it work. He just decided to anyway. And that's always bad :) " (Also useful in our current climate of "Okay but we should consider the other person's circumstances and point of view" and also "Yeah but that doesn't apply if they're literally Nazis tho.")

Hexarchate Stories, Yoon Ha Lee A collection of short stories set in the universe of those three books. There's one story at the end that does satisfy the "But I wanted another sequel!!!" urge. And there's a bit of backstory for Jedao and Cheris. But by and large what you should be in the mood to read is flash fiction snippets that simply happen to be set in the same universe but have no bearing on the plot. Which is pretty cool and interesting if you are in the proper mindset! Even better, Lee includes author's notes at the end of each story to talk about the story, or the influences, or the context of his life at the time, etc etc. That is always my absolute favorite part of a short story collection. Also these notes told me everything I needed to know about why I liked certain things about his writing. "I wanted to write my own AUs," "If I get stuck I go on TV Tropes," "My only regret is that I had to cut the scene where Jedao goes to ~Halloween~ dressed as himself and trolls people" ahhhh that's also a regret I share.

Dragon Pearl, Yoon Ha Lee This one is YA! There is a lot less gore although I guess there was still genocide! Read this when you are in the mood for something that doesn't attempt to hide the fact that the plot is completely, conveniently contrived to give you fast-paced action and fun. Min sure has a lot of coincidental meetings that should stretch my disbelief but I don't care. Also, I am enjoying reading books with girls as protagonists that do what I'm tired of being told to love about boy protagonists--just keep barreling along with complete self-assurance that you are right and, if you run into trouble, you can egotistically figure your way out.

The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, N. K. Jemisin Gods and mortal ruling family's messy soap opera sexcapades is not exactly my favorite genre, but luckily it is handled by Jemisin so it's all good. Lots of Souma Family Values. I'm really appreciating how Jemisin considers choice of narrator very carefully and uses it to brilliant effect in this trilogy. Stories are things told by a narrator to an audience; why should we rely on the artifice of an "impartial" "reliable" "omniscient" 3rd person narrator writing into the void? This trilogy was Jemisin's first, I believe, so it's a little awkward coming back to them now, only because Jemisin is such a powerful writer that the themes she's begun working with here have only gotten stronger with each successive work.

The Broken Kingdoms, N. K. Jemisin This one I rated as I read for Protagonist Is Blind based on the scale of a sighted person going "but some of my best friends are blind!" In that regard, I think the book does really well! Blindness doesn't define Oree's life and value; Oree doesn't get magical powers that make her a blind person who isn't really blind; Oree moves away from home and gets a job and lives on her own which seems very accurate to me based on my knowledge of one (1) person who is blind; instead of being ~cured~, Oree actually gets more blind at the end of the story and this is considered a Good Ending. Also personal bonus points are awarded for references to her stick being handy for hitting people with. Some stuff was stereotypical, but Jemisin's intent was not. A+, will read again, please support including way more characters who are blind in media. Anyway I enjoyed this one.

The Kingdom of Gods, N. K. Jemisin First off, Jemisin directly up front critiques the narration choices she made in the first two books and then pays it off like a boss at the end. Like holy crap. I admit by now I was getting a bit bored of the genre, but the book was still very engaging because Jemisin is a master. It may also have been affected by how much increasing pain I've been in lately.

The Awakened Kingdom, N. K. Jemisin I'm dead. This one was way more my speed and you need the other three books to understand this novella but ohhhh my god it's perfect. I read a lot of choice passages of this aloud to my roommate because how could you resist. It's still heavy but it's hilarious. Bless Shill.

“Do you really think that Nightmare is going to agree to this?” Cross asked, a small frown appearing on his face, disliking the idea of pestering the dark being over something that was relatively small.

“Yes! Our chocolate supply is getting dangerously low, and we need to raid at least one Underfell in order to get our stores up to what it should be… I’m pretty sure that someone’s been stealing from our stash, too. I want  to know who it is, so that they’ll have to come with to get the chocolate as payment.” Killer responded, waving his hands around in the air, determined and offended that someone would steal his precious treat.

Hatchet rubbed his face a little, and sighed “You do realize that we have plenty of food. We have enough to last us for years without having to go out on another supply run before we would need to begin worrying about it.”

“I know! But we’re low on *chocolate* and that’s something that’s really important to me!” Killer fussed. Was he being a little childish? Maybe. But Nightmare promised him the chance to stab assholes and eat chocolate and he was going to *hold* the other to that, stars damn it.

Dust smirked “I’m always down for stealing shit and causing chaos… It’s been nearly a week since he’s sent us off to cause a ruckus anyways.”

Cross, who had been in front of the group of four of them stopped dead in the doorway to the throne room. Which was incredibly rude, as the others all smacked into him, nearly causing the former guardsman to fall over.

“Hey! What the fuck, Cross! Boss is in there, right?” Killer hissed, smacking the newbie on the back of the head.

Cross nodded minutely, his voice very quiet, even for him “Yes, yes he is. But I’m not sure that we should bother him right now. Let’s just… Wait…”

“Fuck no, I want my choco-” Killer started, roughly shoving his way past the taller skeleton before stopping dead in front of the monochromatic skeleton. He started to back out of the throne room, processing what he was seeing. “You… Uh… You know what Cross? I’m inclined to agree with you. You’re new, but you’ve got some stellar instincts when it comes to dealing with Boss.”

“Thanks, I’ve had to deal with a nearly all-powerful tyrant growing up. Nightmare’s an improvement, quite frankly.” Cross muttered as the pair of chocolate loving skeletons retreated.

“Oookay, there’s a lot to unpack from that statement… Anyone know who Wings is?” Killer muttered quietly “I’ve seen them in the castle occasionally, usually near wherever Nightmare is. But never for very long, and not close enough to talk to them…”

Hatchet shook his head “You’ve been working for Nightmare longer than the rest of us - and I don’t recognize them anymore than you do.”

Dust shrugged “I saw them sparring once in one of the training rooms. They have a bow that they can summon and some of their fighting style reminds me strongly of… Someone. I can’t quite place who.”

“Or you could stop cowering and meet them properly.” Nightmare’s voice rang out from behind the four of them, sounding amused.

The only one of them who didn’t let out a sound of surprise as they swiftly turned around to face their boss was Killer, who mostly seemed resigned. “Yes, boss?” Killer called out, raising a browbone at the other, waiting.

“Dust, Killer, Cross, and Hatchet… I would like to formally introduce the four of you two my child, Venus. They are the light of my life and if I find out that if any of you so much as thought of harming them, I will make your death a very slow and painful one, is that understood? The same goes for deliberately putting them in danger.” Nightmare growled, looming threateningly at them as he gently hugged his child close.

They nodded obediently. After a moment, Cross asked quietly “I noticed that you used they/them pronouns for Mx. Venus? Do you have any other pronouns that you like, or are those it? It’s nice to finally meet you.”

Venus brightened a little, a small smile appearing on their face, happily answering “I use they/them pronouns pretty much exclusively, although thank you for asking! What are all of your preferred pronouns?” They leaned a little against Nightmare, seemingly completely at ease in his presence. “… and a quick rundown of each of your names? Dad didn’t exactly indicate which of you’s name he was saying as he spoke them…”

“Oh! Uhh, I’m Cross, I use he/him pronouns.” The monochromatic skeleton responded, glad that his hands were in his pockets. Chara was floating next to him, trying to yell at him to be introduced, but he was ignoring the human.

“I’m Killer, I use he/him pronouns most of the time… But occasionally I like they/them pronouns.” He answered cheerfully.

“I’m Dust and I don’t care what pronouns are used for me, though most refer to me by male pronouns.” The other shrugged. “Or curse me for tormenting them.”

“And I’m Hatchet - I’ve never really given much thought to what I want to be called in that way… But male pronouns seem to fit pretty well, and I’ve never thought about something else, so…” He shrugged a little, not particularly bothered.

Venus nodded, a small smile appearing on their face as the young skeleton moved closer to the four of them. Each of the bad sanses realized just how small Venus was. Hatchet asked curiously “How old are you, Venus? If you don’t mind answering. You’re just… When Pap was that size he was like… Eight. He shot up like a weed shortly after that.” A soft sigh left him and his eye light dimmed. He missed his brother - but he could go visit the other later. This world had done Paps a lot of good.

“I… A little over three hundred, I think? Birthdays tend to blur together after the first hundred, haha… Dad?” Venus responded, a small frown appearing on their face as they tried to remember.

“You are three hundred and twelve years old. Your next birthday is in three months.” Nightmare answered, a surprisingly fond and loving smile on the overlord of darkness’s face. It was.. It was very clear that he very much cared for his child with all that he was.

“Oh! Well, I’m that many years old, apparently.” Venus responded, a grin appearing on their face at their dad’s reaction.

“Well, I shall leave the five of you to get to know one another - don’t get into too much trouble now, and try to stay within this AU, alright?” Nightmare hummed, an amused expression on his face as he wandered off.

“… Wait does that mean that you can open interdimensional portals on your own?” Killer asked after a moment, having registered what Nightmare said, a grin slowly appearing on his face.

“Yes, of course I can. Both Dad and…” Venus’s eye lights dim for a moment and they hug themself a little, their wings surrounding themself “… My other parent are capable of opening such portals.”

They all recognized a Dangerous Topic tell and Cross spoke up after a moment, grumbling “KIller, boss said that we should stay here - if you want to go steal chocolate from a Fell, go pester boss yourself! I keep almost all of my chocolate in my inventory, to keep you from swiping it from me in the first place. So I still have plenty.”

Killer gasped dramatically before attempting to tackle Cross “You chocolate-hiding jerk! Gimme sooome!”

Cross dodged out of the way and snickered a little as the other fell flat on his face “Never! It’s my chocolate, not yours!”

“…Chocolate?” Venus chirped curiously, their eye lights widening as they approached the monochromatic skeleton, bringing their hands up to their chest in a pleading gesture “I… I love chocolate…May I pretty please have some? Even if it’s just a square…”

Cross stopped dead in his tracks, blinking down at them, completely taken off-guard as to just how adorable the other was.. With a sigh, he pulled out the bar that he was currently working on “Do you like dark chocolate? This is spicy and has a berry filling as well.”

“I love dark chocolate! And that sounds really good!” Venus responded with a broad grin as they teleported directly in front of Cross, gratefully taking the square that was handed to them, taking a curious bite, their eye lights turning into excited stars “This is amazing! Thank you sooooo much, Cross!” Their wings fluttered excitedly behind them a little.

“Heeeey, that’s not fair! Why did you give Venus chocolate and not me?” Killer whined, pouting up at Cross from the floor, his arms crossed over his chest as he sulked.

“They asked me nicely for chocolate instead of demanding that I give some to them.” Cross answered back, smirking a little in response at the other’s grumbling.

Dust’s eye lights brightened for a moment and he asked curiously “Oh Cross… Would you please give me a square of chocolate? I’d be willing to give you one of my home-made marshmallows with caramel in exchange.”

The grin on Cross’s face broadened a little “Deal!” he snapped off a square and held it out for Dust to take, gratefully taking the soft and delicious sweet he’d been promised, happily taking a huge bite of it.

“Oh!… That looks really good too…” Venus murmured, their attention turning to Dust, a hopeful expression appearing on their face.

“Here ya go, kiddo. Enjoy.” Dust answered, chuckling softly as he pulled out another one of the sweet treats.

“Yay!” Venus purred contentedly, nibbling on both the chocolate and the caramel covered marshmallow. They were so glad that they managed to talk their dad into letting them talk with his top minions.

First up, I would like to say how much I loved this chapter. I know I say this often, but sometimes there are just those really good episodes that I just have to give proper credit too.

Second up is

Sera’s redemption:

    This episode really redeemed Seraphina in my mind. All my grievances that I’ve had with her (it’s a whole post if you wanna look for it) are being addressed by Seraphina herself. I have to say that my biggest problem with her character is that she tends to believe that everything revolves around her and tends to ignore the bigger picture, and therefore, many of the problems in her school and her society. Her self-involvement has really ruined her potential of being an influential high-tier. People say it’s because of her sudden disinterest in school, her apathetic mindset. Don’t get me wrong, it is, but even before she met John, Seraphina’s thoughts have always revolved around herself. The whole time we were in the Sera flashback, she was worrying about how others saw her. She’s almost paranoid of slipping up, of ruining her facade of perfection. This isn’t because she wants to be a good role model, however. Seraphina just gave herself high expectations and guidelines. She’s worried about how others see her, not the impact she might have on them. My specific annoyance with this was that she never really notices the troubles of others. While she worries about the smallest slight that might have something to do with her, low and mid tiers are being bullied and harassed daily, well past the point of the natural hierarchy. Some more examples of things she’s overlooked are; Tuesday, the beatings, John’s change in personality, Isen/John/Arlo new dynamic (I was really looking forward to seeing her look into this), The whole EMBER thing, e.t.c... But now I’m really happy because in this chapter, she admits it (and explains it better than me). Here’s what she said:

   “I’ve been ignoring the problems around me for the longest time. It was selfish.” E x a c t l y. Sera is finally realizing that not everything is about her, not every whisper contains her name.

    In this episode, Seraphina also accepts that she is a cripple. Before she was dancing around, telling herself that her powers will probably come back. Now she understands who she is and where she belongs. She even calls out Arlo for helping her when she’s the cripple and technically the mid-tiers should be allowed to prove their authority over her (redeemed Sera is the best. Agreeing with my points and all ;)). Here’s all the dialogue from Sera on this topic:

    “Elaine. I’m not the ace anymore. It’s just as they said. I’m powerless now. You’re not obligated to treat me any particular way.” (then later) “Even if it’s for forever (referring to her ability loss)? I don’t want you babysitting me. Especially now, since I no longer bring any value to society. There’s really no point.” (next one is last one) “Hey you (at Arlo). You said it yourself, I’m a cripple. I should know my place.”

    I’ve mentioned already the first and third quotes when I said that Sera was agreeing with me. With all that I’ve said. Now that I think about it, she agrees with Illena (I forgot about her till now lol). Seraphina no longer has hope, no longer has any belief that she might get her ability back. She’s trying to help everyone else understand too so they embarrass both her and themselves. And, again, she agreed with Illena, her captor. She’s really lost her faith.

In regard to the second quote, I’ve actually been wanting to talk about Sera’s ability loss. Whether it’s temporary or if it’s permanent. I’ve asked this question on websites before and it seemed like most people thought she would get her ability back. I’m going to list my own reasons why she will and won’t be getting her powers back

Coming back:

Uru-chan is mainly a plot writer. She plans out her story and most things she includes in UnOrdinary serve some sort of purpose. Once Seraphina’s ability loss has served its purpose, Sera will likely get her powers back to fulfill some other plot  point.

Power-therapy idk

Sera’s powers are some of the most inspiring and influential we’ve seen. To take away such godly powers permanently would be a real loss

Gone forever:

It’s been so long since the drug was put in her system, the chances of it wearing off now is unlikely

Uru-chan might honor her decision to take away Sera’s powers and commit to it.

Sera herself to being a cripple. Uru-chan wouldn’t change her view of herself again so quickly i don’t think

    Alright that’s done. Personally, I believe that Seraphina’s powers are coming back. I feel like they’re too big of a loss and that it would really slow down the plot. And i trust uru with her plot. However, I really think that if Seraphina’s powers come back, it won’t be because of the drug wearing off. The drug has been in her system for months, if Sera’s getting her powers back, it’s going to be from some outside source. Most likely John or maybe her parents are going to pay doctors to find a cure (seems like something they’d do…). So anyway, that’s my take.

    The last point of this section (it’s been a long one I know) is Sera’s doubting why she was even queen. This is a big one because Seraphina questions the hierarchy, something she’s stood for time and time again. But in this episode, Seraphina says:

    “The amount of authority I possessed before my ability loss… I took it all for granted.”

    Now this quote doesn’t exactly say what I’m trying to explain, but be quiet I really want to assume it does. I want this quote to mean that Seraphina is questioning the hierarchy system. Because a big part of her presence in the earlier episodes was disagreeing with John about the book UnOrdinary. She believed in what her parents taught her; that the powerful are in charge. I really think that if she doesn’t trust the system now, it is the ultimate redemption. I don’t know. I feel I had a lot to say about this because this is huge, but I guess I don’t. Think of this as food for thought I guess.

Something i want to say really quick was that Seraphina is honestly slipping into depression. She’s lost hope in regaining her power, she is disappointed in herself for not being a strong as John, and she honestly believes that Illena was right. And that because she is a cripple now, others can walk all over her. I really like redeemed Sera and hope she gets into a better mindset.

FINALLY we’re moving on

FRIENDSHIP

    Yay, best topic.

    As I’ve said in other posts, I absolutely love John and Sera’s friendship (I will never ship them though). Their whole dynamic really warms my heart and in this episode, we get to see this friendship pull through. Before it’s just been buddy-buddy light hearted jokes and bits. Now for one of the first times, we get proof of how much these friends really love each other. We get to see John and Seraphina in a truly sentimental moment.

It was Matt’s birthday and as a friend, you wanted to do something special for him on his very special day. Wanting to keep up with the surprise, you decided to surprise him by treating him out at a Korean restaurant.

“Y/N, are you sure you know where you're going?”

“Uh of course I do!”

“Well, then do you mind asking me where you're taking me?”

“Yes, I do mind because that means your surprise would be RUINED.”

He then sighs. “Okay, I'll stay quiet.”

“Good.” After a few more steps, the two of you finally reach your destination. “And what do you know, we’re finally here.”

Matt then looks as the first thing he sees is a sign of a Korean restaurant and turns to you.

“Y/N, are we at a-?”

“Korean restaurant? Yes, yes we are.” You smiled as you walked Ive never had Korean food and i was thinking maybe since its your birthday you can steer me on what to eat? Maybe?

He paused for a moment and think. “Hmmm, well it's been awhile since I've had some really good Korean food......also it is my birthday......so,  sure, why not?”

You smiled. “ YAY LET'S GO.”

they go inside where the person escorts them to a table. Once they are sat at a large table a waiter walks up to them, handing them a couple of menus while introducing herself to the two of you.

“Hi my name is Alex and I will be your server tonight. Can I get you something to drink?”

Matt stared at you, though you were still unsure about what beverage you wanted to order. He then turned back to the waiter. “Uhhhhhh, maybe just some water, for now.”

The waiter nodded. “Okay, I’ll be back with your drinks shortly.” The waiter walks away while Matt and the reader look through the menus.

“Sooo old man, how does it feel to getter even older and wrinkly.?” You joked.

He laughed. “ I don't know. I guess I’m just trying to make the best of it, at least.”

You made a wry smile. “Well enjoy it while it lasts, cause in a few years, your gonna need a cane, you cant eat spicy foods anymore, you'll need a diaper and-”

He then cuts you off just when the waiter comes back to your table.

“Hello, I'm back with your drinks.” She then hands them a couple of glasses of ice cold water.

“Thank you.” Both of you said.

“You’re welcome. Anyway, do you guys want to order right now or do you need some more time to think?”

You hesitated. “I uh think we need more ti-” “No no no, we're ready.” Matt seemed persistent at his response.

“Oh uh, you sure? Cause I can always come back if you still need some time to think.”

“No, I think we got a pretty good idea.”

“Oh, okay.” She then takes out a pen and notepad. “What would you like to order?”

“Well, we'll try one of each, the deluxe meal, family style.” You then took notice of the waiter’s dumbfounded expression on her face.

Alex, the waiter, then raised an eyebrow from his response. “Uuhhhhh are you sure about that sir?” She glances at the two of you.

“Yea Matt, I don't know about th-”.

“Come on Y/N, we're going all out tonight. Plus, it is my birthday so...............................” The then starts to pout, much to your dismay.

You then sighed, given that it’s his birthday and that he gets to decide what he wants to eat. “Okay fine! Let's go all out then.”

“Okay........anything for the birthday boy here.” The waiter smiled as she continues to write down then stops once she got the orders. “Okay, I'll be right back with your order.”

Once the waiter left to take your orders, you and Matt continued to talk.

“So…..how are you liking this place so far?”

“Not bad, it seems nice. You picked a really good place.” “I did.” You were then silent as you shyly played with the small puddle from your cold water glass. “Also, to tell you the truth, I never had Korean food before.” “What?” He asked, placing his drink down after taking a sip.

“I mean, apart from kimchi and barbeque, I never really eat a lot of Korean cuisine before so I thought I could change that here along with celebrating your birthday.” “Well, you’re in luck, cause we’ll get the best of both worlds: Me celebrating my birthday and you getting to try some new things for the first time.” You chuckled. “Yeah pretty much.”

“And trust me, Korean food is really really good, which is why I ordered the deluxe meal. Hopefully you’ll enjoy what I ordered.” “I hope so too.”

Just then, they see a couple of servers arrive with a tray filled with small bowls before placing them on the table. Your eyes then lingered on the small bowls of rice along with different little bowls filled with different types of seasoned vegetables.

“That’s call banchan.”

“Ban-what?”

“Banchan. They’re little side dishes, usually vegetables.”

“Ohhhhhhhhhh okay.” Just then, the servers started to place down some slightly bigger plates, from a noodle dish called japchae, to bulgogi, kimchi-jiggae or kimchi stew, and gimbap. Though you then noticed a plate with chicken on it.

“That’s Korean fried chicken.” He points out. “It’s really good, trust me.”

“Oh okay, I’ll take your word for it.”

Once the servers were done placing down plates on the table, both you and Matt couldn’t help but stare with your mouth agape as your table looked like a feast fit for a large family as opposed to a small dinner for two.

“Wow.” You gasped. “So…...this is the House special deluxe. Family style.”

“Yeah.” He chuckled. “Never thought that it’d be so…...extravagant! I mean you could feed a whole town with this.” He exaggerated.

“Well, they weren’t wrong when they called it ‘family style’.”

“Yeah….so?” “So?” “Shall we dig in?” “You know what Y/n, as mouth watering as some of these food are, there’s no way we can finish this.” “Really? You’re the one to talk. I’ve seen you eat at the carnival before. This isn’t new.” “Yeah.” “Besides, at least you won’t have to finish this by yourself.” “No I won’t.”

“So?” He sighs. “Good thing I didn’t have a big breakfast.” “Yeah.” He nods. “So, let’s dig in.”

  The two of you took out your chopsticks and bowls as you pick up different plates, trying to eat some of each dish on the table. Some were familiar and most were unfamiliar, but hopefully you could have a taste of what Korean food is like along with Matt spoiling himself on his special day. 

                                   -----------------------------------------       After an hour almost passing by, and the plates and bowls almost empty the two of you stopped to stretched your arms and legs while resting against the chair. You then groaned while clutching your stomach.

“Ugh, I’m so full.” “So am I.” Just then, Alex the waiter returned with the check, placing it down on the table.

“Thank you.” You responded and grabbed it before Matt can and looked, seeing that it was $175.75.

“How much for everything?” “$175.75.”

“Oh.” He paused. “Not surprising, though it could’ve been worse.”

“I guess.” Matt then watched as you placed the check down and pulled out your wallet. “Woah woah woah woah! Y/n. Maybe I should pay the bill.” He then took out his wallet only to be interrupted by you.

“It’s okay Matt, I have money, I can pay.”  

“No, I can’t let yo-” “Come on, it’s fine. It’s your birthday today.” You reassured. “Plus, you’ve always been the one to pay the bill, this is the least I can do. Besides, you’re not gonna let this opportunity up, are you?” He then shook his head. “No, not at all.” “That’s what I thought.” “Yea.” You then placed your debit card down on the check while Alex returns and takes the check, processing it. “Thank you.” “You’re welcome.”  You and Matt slowly emerge and got up from your seats as the two of you leave the restaurant. Both of you pace yourselves and waddled after scarfing down tons of food.

“So….that was a pretty good meal.” “Yeah, I enjoyed every single thing on the table.” You chuckled. “Me too, even if I can barely move in these skinny jeans.”

“Yeah. The galbi was pretty good, along with the bulgogi and the Kimchi-jjigae.”

“Yeah I like the bulgogi was good, as well as the noodles in black bean sauce. What am I saying, the food was amazing!” You then took a deep breath before continuing. “But the one dish I really loved the most was the Korean fried chicken.”

Matt chuckled. “Yeah, the fried chicken was good too, everything was good.” “Mm hmph. Quite filling, but totally worth it.” “It is.” He then placed a hand on your shoulder. “Thank you Y/N. I really appreciate this treat, even if it was filling.” “No problem, isn’t that’s what friends are for?” You quipped, making Matt laugh once more.

 Just before they could reach the car, they suddenly stop walking and come across a bakery and leaned against the window as they see fresh sweet rolls and bread coming out from the oven, as well as some fancy cakes in different colors and flavors topped with an assortment of fruits. You and Matt couldn’t help but smell the sweet aroma through the glass.

“Wow, such lovely cakes.” “I know right…...it reminds me think of my 5th birthday.”

“Yeah it does.” The two of you then continued to stare at the glass and snickered.

“You know Matt, we just ate an entire feast back at the restaurant and all of a sudden we’re thinking about cakes. I’m still stuffed.” “Me too.” You and Matt nodded and continued to stare at the glass window.

“So…...anything else you want or like? It’s still your birthday.”

Matt then looked around to see the sweets in the bakery once again and made a sly smile. “Hmmm, I think I know what I wanted.” You realized what he was referring to and went inside. “Stay right here, I’ll be right back.”

A few minutes later, you end up coming outside with a box, and you and Matt then continued to walk till you reached the car.

“You know Y/N, you didn’t have to buy a cake.” “I know, but I wanted to. You can’t have a birthday without cake.” “Yeah.” He then puts his seat belt on as you have him the box. “Can I….” “Go right ahead and open it.” He nods and opens the box, revealing a chocolate cake with kit kats and M&Ms. He was at a loss for words, though you knew that he admired the cake.

“W-wow Y/N, I don’t know what to say.” “Do you like it?” You gave him a hopeful smile. He then smiled back. “I do. It just brings back some childhood memories.” “I know. Happy birthday Matt.”

“Thanks. Also, we’re gonna eat this cake are we?” “Hell yeah we are.”

The taxi dropped them off by the small grocery shop where Steve’s dad had been doing his shopping. Steve saw his dad’s old Ford parked three spots away from the entrance. He walked over, using the key he got from his dad before they left, to unlock the vehicle. He threw his duffel into the back seat and motioned Danny to do the same with his. Then he checked around the truck, running his hands over in some areas and at times bending over and kneeling, carrying a thorough visual inspection. It’d been parked here for almost a day and Steve didn’t want to take any chances.

Satisfied with the vehicle's condition, he turned to enter the shop. A hidden bell jingled, announcing his visit as he opened the door.

“Why don’t you go and grab us a few cases of beer? I’ll go over and get some food,” Steve suggested to Danny and took off to the food and snacks section. Danny walked away to the other side in search of alcohol.

They both met at the register after a few minutes laden with their purchases. An elderly Hawaiin native with white hair and a friendly smile greeted them from behind the till.

“Aloha, how much for all these?” Steve asked, piling up everything on the counter. The man rang it up and presented Steve with a tally which he settled with a credit card.

“Listen, my name’s Steve McGarrett, my father was here yesterday evening and he got very sick. He told me you guys helped him to get over to the hospital quickly,” Steve opened up the conversation as Danny collected their stuff and went out to put them in the truck.

“Ah yes, I remember. I’ve known the Captain for a long time.” The old man grinned showing a raw of uneven and less-than-white teeth. “And you are his son? It’s very nice to meet you! Is the Captain alright?”

“We’re just coming back from the hospital. Thanks to what you did, he got there on time and he’s doing okay now,” Steve smiled, letting the genuine gratitude he felt show through.

“Please, there is no need to thank us. It was the least we could do. He came in to buy groceries, as he always does just before the weekend and he was over there, next to the vegetable aisle. He was standing there one moment and falling over the next. I saw it happen, but I was here and wasn’t going to reach him on time,” the man’s expression darkened as he recalled what happened.

It was clear to Steve that this old shop owner cared about his regular customer. Steve figured that he must have seen his dad in uniform - or maybe even they were friendly enough that John McGarrett must’ve told this gentleman what he did since he kept referring to him as ‘Captain.’

“Lucky for him, the pretty girl he was talking to, caught him before he hit the ground. Then she called over saying he was unconscious and I dialed 911. Then I went over to him to check for myself, and yes, he was out cold. The ambulance showed up shortly after and took him to the hospital,” the shop owner finished.

“What pretty girl?” Warning bells started to go off in Steve’s mind as he latched onto that bit of information. For some insane reason, he thought he knew exactly who had been talking to his father.

“Please tell me it was a cute, blonde with blue eyes about yay height?” Danny, who had joined them during the old man’s recounting of the story, asked. He was pointing at a height that reached his chest.

“No, not really,” the man smiled at him. “She was a very beautiful girl. I’d say about your height or maybe slightly taller? With long brown hair and brown eyes,” he informed Danny earnestly. “Such a nice girl she was too. She didn’t leave Captain’s side until the medics got here. I had to deal with a customer and had to come back to the till,” he looked at Steve apologetically.

“Any chance you have a security camera in here that caught the incident?”

“What he means is, maybe we know her, you know? Or maybe if we see her around, he can thank her for doing what she did.” Danny intervened smoothly, seeing as the shopkeeper was taken aback by Steve’s tone. He could see the younger SEAL had gone into Operator-mode.

“Oh, I’m sorry, I don’t have a security camera for the aisles. Only one here above me pointed at the register and one at the entrance.” He was starting to sound a little frightened.

“It’s alright, I’m sorry for snapping at you. It’s just what happened to my dad was so sudden and it’s got me worried. If I can find this lady, maybe she can tell me more about what happened to him, you know? Because she was talking to him at the time,” Steve caught on to Danny’s warning and told the shopkeeper contritely. “Would you mind letting us see the footage from the entrance camera?” he asked in a tone he hoped came across with the right amount of pleading.

The man’s expression softened, understanding the concern and worry Steve was projecting. “It's in the backroom. Please, follow me,” he left the register and went through a door that was behind the counter, keeping the door open to let Steve and Danny enter. Then he went over to the two monitors that were on the small desk and pointed at the left screen.

“This is the entrance camera. My son changes the tape every two days or so. He hasn’t changed this one yet, so if you reverse it, you might probably see what you need,” he told them looking at the screen doubtfully. It was clear that he didn’t have much knowledge of the system. But the fact that he was still willing to let them go through it, told them a lot about the kind, old man.

“I appreciate this very much, sir. We only need to see my dad and his lady friend. I’ll make sure to leave it turned back to the live footage once we’re done here, mahalo.” Steve assured the man as he dragged the single steel chair closer to the desk to sit. Then he started reversing the footage back to the time he guessed his father entered the shop. Danny came to stand behind him and the shopkeeper went near the door to stand there, where he could keep an eye on his shop.

“You are the son of the Captain. I’m sure it’s fine and hopefully, you will find what you are looking for,” said the old man.

Steve wasn’t sure whether he was trying to convince himself or them. In any case, he only wanted to confirm his suspicions. He had no intention of messing up the kind shopkeeper’s security system.

Steve found what he was looking for, five minutes into the feed. The footage had the time stamp as 15.25 hrs when John McGarrett entered the shop. Exactly four minutes after, the clear shot of Rollins could be seen entering the shop, carrying a big, black, handbag on her shoulder. She walked towards the entrance purposefully and looked to both left and right before stepping inside, giving the security camera a clear image of her face unknowingly.

Danny let out a soft whistle and tapped Steve on the back once. Steve reset the system to its previous setting and left the room. He thanked the shopkeeper for his help again and they both left the shop soon after that without saying a word.

McGarrett Home

Honolulu

Hawaii

“Either you have a major stalker problem or that was one hell of a coincidence.” Danny reflected as he pulled a long gulp from his chilled Longboard.

He was staring at the lazy waves coming back to hug the shore. The salty afternoon breeze did a lot to tone down the heat and he found himself relaxing, laying on the comfy wooden deck chair on Steve’s lanai. He had taken his shoes and socks off and folded his jeans up to his knees, letting his bare feet rest on the soft sand on the beach.

It had only taken five minutes for them to return to Steve’s place. Neither had talked on the way, each of them thinking through the chain of events that led them to Hawaii and where it could potentially lead them. Once they had gotten home, Danny had taken the task of sorting out their purchases while Steve took time to go through the house, carrying a visual inspection like he did with his dad’s truck. He had known that there was no way he could do a thorough search since neither of them had their usual gear. But he had checked all the rooms, the garage, and the yard nevertheless. They hadn’t said much to each other while going about their self-appointed tasks, preferring caution in case the house was bugged. They had chosen Steve’s lanai on the beach as a private and much safer place to have this conversation.

Danny studied the SEAL sitting right next to him on the other deck chair, with his bare feet propped up on the small wooden stool in front of them. Steve had an open beer resting on the armrest as he continued to take on the view before him.

“You remember what Joe used to call the ‘coincidences’?”

“Yeah, something about it taking a lot of work and planning to make one happen?” Danny answered Steve. He had an inkling as to where the younger man was going with this. He took another long pull from his beer.

“I’m thinking there's a good chance that she had something to do with whatever happened to dad. Then she decided to hang around the hospital to see what would happen next. I’m also thinking, that would mean there’s even a better chance she’s connected to one of our bad guys,” said Steve, finally taking a sip from his beer.

“I was thinking about something she said earlier. I couldn’t place it then, but it sort of hit me on the way back. She said, ‘I thought you guys were in Colorado?’” Danny mimicked the overly cheerful Rollins and managed a surprisingly decent likeness. “She wasn’t supposed to know where we went, was she? I’m pretty sure Colonel Sumner never mentioned it,” he straightened from his sprawl on the chair to properly look at Steve.

“No, she shouldn’t have known where we went,” Steve answered. “You know, if we continue along this line of thought, I’d say this could even explain why our snake-heads and the life-suckers here on earth have been very quiet recently. Kusanagi and her team are tracking those sats 24/7 and nothing so far,” He turned to face Danny. “Say, if this woman were to call them and tell them what we knew, it would make sense for them to fly under the radar for a while, don’t you think?”

“Taking this thread even further, it could also mean what happened with your dad might be the opening act of them coming out to play. Maybe they are done flying under the radar,” Danny said contemplatively.

Then he finished his beer and fished another one from the case that was sitting on the beach between the chairs. He did not like where this was going and he could already sense the impending threat that was about to fall on them.

“Yeah.”

The one-word agreement from Steve didn’t help to alleviate Danny’s concerns either. “How long do we have, you think?” he asked, tamping down the trepidation he was beginning to feel.

The entire conversation had taken a turn for the worse and he lamented the loss of the nice relaxing feeling that the beach, the sound of the waves, and the beer had created.

He knew that Steve had already thought the whole thing through, maybe from the moment he saw the footage from the shop, or maybe even the moment they had bumped into Catherine Rollins. Steve always had certain instincts about people and Danny knew from experience that he tended to be more right than wrong. The Lieutenant had annoyed Steve from the start and Danny was starting to believe that the younger SEAL may have sensed something off about her from the beginning, even if he hadn’t known it at the time. He hoped that Steve had some sort of a plan to deal with whatever was about to come their way.

Steve took time drinking his beer as he collected his thoughts to answer Danny’s question. He knew his friend was not going to like what he was about to reveal.

“Look, they’ve had enough opportunities to kill us if that’s what they wanted,” he started to explain his theory. “I’m guessing that since they went through this elaborate plot to get us here, they’d want to take us alive,”

“You’re guessing, hah? That doesn't make me feel better, Steve,” Danny interrupted. “Since when do you know what goes inside the mind of a snake-head?” He wanted to get moving. The way Steve was taking his sweet time to explain things as if he were a college professor conducting a lecture was getting on his nerves.

“Danny, Wo Fat is MSS.* I've seen his interrogation feed from Libya and I could tell by the way he moved and acted. So whatever Snake they infected him with, there’s a good chance they’re going to use his knowledge as a spy to conduct a snatch & grab out in the open, if that is their plan,” Steve revealed matter-of-factly.

Danny felt his mouth drop open. He had no idea that Steve had clearance for those feeds. But it made sense when he thought about it. If what Steve said was true - which Danny believed was the case - they probably did have a decent chance at guessing how things would go down.

“Well, what if it’s the Wraith? Did you think about that?” Danny had to ask, playing the devil's advocate. This whole conversation was pure guesswork bordering on paranoia and he had to sound things out with the other SEAL, before jumping into action.

“Come on man, you’ve seen those things. There’s no way they can blend in with normal people. Plus, you think they’d take a chance after what happened in Afghanistan, or Gemmond? Nah, I think they’d use the Goa’uld for something like this.” Steve remarked with surety and sipped his beer, looking completely relaxed. He projected an innocent image of just-a-guy-having-a-beer-after-a-tiring-day for all the world to see. Danny knew better.

“Ok fine. Go on, what’s next?” he had a feeling he was going to hate whatever half-brained plan the guy was sure to have concocted in his mind.

“If it was me, I’d want all of us, you, me and my dad, to leverage against each other,” Steve started to explain as he mentally constructed the events the enemy would initiate.

“So we go back, grab your dad and go somewhere else!” Danny exclaimed incredulously. How hard could that be?

“Still, all of us together. You think they’ll let us go just like that? We don’t know what they are capable of or willing to do, to complete their objective,”

“What the hell are you getting at, McGarrett?” Danny knew this was where the man came out with the real-shitty part of his plan. He could see the reasoning and had to admit that Steve did have a point. But he most definitely didn't have to like this plan, whatever it was.

“I want us to split up,” Steve was studiously avoiding eye contact, staring at the ocean instead, sipping his beer leisurely. As if he hadn’t just suggested the most idiotic thing in the whole freaking world!

“No.” Said Danny resolutely and dropped his second empty bottle to the ground. He didn’t even want to elaborate on his denial of this stupidity.

“Listen to me,” Steve started, placatingly.

“Nope,” Danny shook his head vehemently. “Nope, nope.”

“Danny, for god's sake, if they take us all together, they can easily use us against each other. When we split up, we force them to split up as well. That way, we increase our chances of getting away,” Steve snapped, a hint of command entering his tone.

Danny knew that Steve would make it an order in a heartbeat if he continued this refusal. The Lieutenant Commander was a stubborn asshole when he had his mind made up on something.

“Here’s a better idea, dumbass - we call the SGC - get back-up, and catch the assholes in one fell swoop! Then we ask them nicely what the hell they think they’re doing!”

Danny had to consciously keep his voice from increasing as he continued to argue with Steve. The chance was there that they were under surveillance; so they had to keep up the illusion that they were just sitting on the beach having day-to-day chitchat. But he wasn’t giving up that easily and Danny could match Steve’s stubbornness, especially when he knew that the crazy fucker was preparing to do something drastic.

The sad smile that spread over Steve’s face did nothing to reduce Danny’s agitation. In fact, it increased the impending sense of doom.

“What?” he hissed.

“The landline isn't working, and it has nothing to do with the cable in the house or the connection. I think they disabled it from outside. Also, we don’t have any cell signals. They probably dealt with the local tower as well.” Steve informed Danny.

“WHAT?” Danny exploded. Then he remembered to tone down the volume. “Fuck! How? When?” he asked softly, whipping his cell phone out and checking for himself. Sure enough, there were no signal bars.

“I only found out when I checked the house earlier. I’m thinking even now, we are under surveillance,” Steve shrugged and looked around. “And I’m pretty sure they’re going to make their move very soon.”

They couldn’t see anything obvious, but the tension around them had definitely gone up. Danny felt the hair on the back of his neck stand up in response to the possibility of being watched by unknown and unseen entities.

“What the hell are we gonna do?” He asked, grudgingly accepting the fact that he was going to have to carry out a part in whatever Steve had come up with.

The SEAL wordlessly produced a set of car keys from his shirt pocket and dropped it on the palm Danny extended on reflex.

He stared at the keys in his hand for a few seconds. “What the fuck is this?”

“This is the key to my truck. I’ve checked it, there are no signs of sabotage. Take it and go. You’ll have a tail and they’ll most likely guess you are heading to the hospital. So, don’t make any sudden moves, don’t let them know we are onto them. Call dad as soon as you get a signal and ask him to get ready to leave,” Steve dictated the ops plan the same way he had done countless other times. But this time was nothing like any of those. There were just the two of them against an unknown number of enemies - alien enemies. “My guess is they’d make a move on the two of you when you’re there. They might not want to risk letting you two drive away. So be prepared for traps and try to make a few distractions without directly engaging. We don’t know what they’d do and we really don’t need to put anyone else in danger. Once you have my dad, call SGC and bail.”

“And what will you be doing while I’m out there playing John McLean, hah?” Danny asked heatedly. He was yet to hear the craziest bit of this ridiculous plan.

“Playing the bait of course,” Steve smirked, deliberately pushing Danny’s buttons. Danny scowled.

“I have a feeling I know why they went through this whole drama. I’m going to stay right here and keep the majority of them occupied while you get my dad to safety,” said Steve confidently.

“Why can’t you take off as well, Steve? Why the hell should you be here?” Danny couldn’t understand. Steve had a much better chance if he was out and mobile as well.

“Because as I said earlier, Danny, I don’t want to find out the lengths they’re willing to go to get us. I can minimize the possible collateral damage if I stay put,” Steve explained patiently. Danny was sure he was going to run out of that patience soon.

So he let out a heavy sigh and started to straighten his pant legs. Then he got busy putting his socks and shoes on. “This is the shittiest fucking plan you’ve ever come up with so far, McGarrett,” he felt the need to mention as he finished tying up his shoelaces.

“I’m open to suggestions,” Steve opened his arms wide, inviting Danny to contribute.

“I already made the suggestion, we both get the hell out together,” Danny started, knowing full well how Steve was going to counter.

“And then what? let them grab dad and use him as a hostage? You know that bitch is probably still there, right?” As expected, Steve cut him off, reminding him that there was at least one known enemy already in the scene.

“We do it your way and they have a good chance of grabbing you as a hostage,” Danny stood up and turned to look Steve squarely in the eye. He knew Steve could see the concern in his expression.

“Well, we all have sub-q transmitters in us, don’t we? SGC’d know where I am all the time,”.

Steve was banking on the fact that they’d grab him and take him to one of their hidden bases. It would be the easiest way for the SGC to locate their hidey-hole since they hadn’t been very keen on showing their faces lately. But Of course, there was always a chance the enemy might know about the transmitter and dispose of it. But he didn’t want to say that out loud, further upsetting his friend.

Then he watched Danny walking away towards the house, still muttering to himself. He knew Danny wasn’t happy at all about any of this. Neither was Steve.

The moment he had discovered the trouble with phone lines and the cell signals, it confirmed the suspicions that had been brewing in his mind since he had spoken to his dad. All these seemingly innocuous yet unusual incidents had started to point to a much serious threat when put together.

Steve was still very much concerned for his dad’s health. This plan of his included taking John McGarrett from where he was supposed to be resting into a potentially very dangerous situation. But he didn’t know what else to do to get his dad to safety. He trusted Danny completely and knew he’d try his damndest to do what Steve wanted him to. That was going to have to be enough.

He could feel the anger he had been ruthlessly suppressing, at those things that had involved his family in their plans, trying to resurface. He took a few deep breaths and pushed it aside. He needed to be clear-headed if he was going to make it hard for these assholes to get to him.

Steve continued to sit there drinking his beer, listening to the growling engine as Danny finally took off as instructed. Then he took out his phone and inspected the screen. There were still no signal bars. He got up from his chair then, mentally planning a list of things he needed to take care of, starting from plugging his phone into a charger, before the bad guys decided to show up at his house uninvited.

Wow. I’ve been so patient for weeks. This last week and half has been so exhausting. Not only have I had the stress that my side relationship roller coaster has been, but the summer of S seems like 500 days long.

Let’s look at just last week and this week because the week before he probably saw her four days (or was that the week before)...doesn’t matter, I’ve almost survived it and I’m so done. So over it and him and them. Obviously.
