Let's talk about Dante and Vergil's swords, Rebellion and Yamato, and their "publication history" if you will.
In DMC1, Dante's default sword he starts with is Force Edge. It is described as being a "momento from his father."
Tumblr media
However by the end of DMC1, Force Edge has its true power unlocked and becomes the devil sword Sparda.
Tumblr media
It stays like that permanently afterwards, it never reverts back to being regular Force Edge. So when they were developing DMC2 they needed a new regular default sword for Dante because they couldn't just have him start out using Sparda, so they came up with Rebellion.
Tumblr media
I doubt they put any thought into this whatsoever at the time. But when Itsuno was making DMC3, he decided to take the sword they came up with for Dante from the second game and rewrote it a little so that the Rebellion was the sword that Sparda left Dante after all!
Tumblr media
Since he was also rewriting Force Edge to be the key that locked away the Underworld, and they had another non-Force Edge sword invented up, it opened things up so that they could take that sword they invented to replace Force Edge in DMC2 to have a lot more importance invoked into it!
And since they were also taking Vergil and completely changing his character for the sake of their plot for this prequel game, let's also give him a keepsake sword from Sparda! You might not realize this if you hadn't beaten DMC1 at least on hard mode, but the Yamato was NOT just some random cool samurai sword that they gave Vergil because he's so cool. You see back in DMC1 if you beat it on hard mode you unlocked the Legendary Dark Knight mode, which was a model swap for Dante where he was dressed up as Sparda. And along with Sparda's clothes and DT, you also got to use Sparda's sword the Yamato!
Tumblr media
That's right, the Yamato as a sword actually predates Vergil the character as we know him. The detail that it has the power to DIVIDE things in two is even right there in the description from the original game as well! So Itsuno took this bonus weapon that is described as being wielded by Sparda, and decided it was the matching keepsake weapon given to Vergil in DMC3. Since Vergil is the older twin, he gets the sword Sparda actually used himself.
Tumblr media
The way these swords of such esteem power and prominence have the origin of Itsuno taking disparate elements from the baton passing development of the first two games where the original was made by Kamiya and the second game was made under duress is really nifty to me. Playing DMC5 you'd almost think it was all planned out from the beginning, but nothing could be further from the truth. That's the mark of true creativity I think. Instead of just saying DMC2 was bad and ignoring everything about it, he took the default sword from that game and did something creative with it. Now in the majority of peoples minds, Rebellion is the signature sword for Dante. And by that same token, most fans don't have any idea that Yamato was an unlockable weapon all the way back from the first game because it's just so iconic as Vergil's signature blade.
Pretty cool, I think.

I finished the DMC Netflix anime
I have a lot of thoughts but the tl;dr is that I tried to keep an open mind and I still think it's bad. I don't even feel rage. I just feel nothing about it. I would rather replay DMC2 again.
And to be clear, yes I understand that this was meant to be its own thing separate from the DMC canon. I think it's bad on its own merits, not just in comparison to the original DMC canon.
If you don't care to read it or you still wanna watch for yourself, opinions are under the cut.
The biggest complaint: if you wanted to make a Lady spinoff anime then just make a Lady spinoff anime. I can respect that. I would have been excited for that, even. The ladies of DMC are all badasses who deserve to be explored more!
Don't market it as a Dante anime, put him front and center of all the promotional material, and then do this.
Dante is on screen for like less than half of any given episode (he isn't even in episode 6 at all) and he frequently does nothing but sit around or get his ass kicked. All of the fights we saw in the trailers? That was the bulk of his fights. The rest of the show he's captured or sitting around doing nothing. The primary conflict and story they wanted to tell was Lady vs. the White Rabbit, and Dante is just kind of there. As my one mutual said, "Dante is basically just the McGuffin that Lady and the Rabbit fight over."
This show wound up in an awkward compromise that benefits no one. It wants to be about Lady, but it also doesn't have the confidence to let go of Dante, and in the end it did neither of them justice. Dante had to be completely nerfed or sidelined to give Lady any opportunity to do anything, and I was upset about that because I was expecting a Dante show. And who can blame me for that? That's what the marketing said it was.
It also suffers from the same writing problems as every other Netflix show. Everything needs to be spoon fed to you like you're a drooling toddler. There is no respect for the audience's ability to actually pay attention and understand what's going on. The dialogue is atrocious. They'll give you the same exposition dump two or three times. They never give you the opportunity to sit with a mystery or a question, because a character will always dive in to explain what's going on. I heard many people think episode 6 is the best, and I can tell you right now that it is because the characters blissfully shut the fuck up for most of it. There's actually some opportunity for visual storytelling to stand on its own and treating the audience like the adults we actually are.
Most of the characters are extremely unlikable. Some of that is because they're mostly just exposition repositories (I couldn't even tell you any of the names of Lady's squad or the scientist dude babbling about quantum physics or whatever). Some of that is because they're given outsized screen time compared to the guy we all thought would be the main character. Some of it was because they clearly happily followed the orders of an unhinged maniac. By episode three I was rooting for their deaths, because every time they came on screen they just wasted my time with more exposition dumps.
I wanna live in the timeline where Dante sides with the bunny just to see what happens.. Even though annihilating all humans would be character assassination, at least he would have been doing something interesting instead of just hanging out on the bench for the entire show.
The US politics and moral messaging were about as subtle as taking a brick to the face.
I also find their use of Vergil in the marketing to be obnoxious and misleading. He's in the show for about a minute at the start of one episode, and a minute at the very end of the very last episode. He's practically just a teaser so people clamor for season 2, because they know we all want Vergil.

In the Netflix trailer where Dante made a joke and he was self-aware about it, people were saying that it wasn't the first time he was like that and only brought up this part from the DMC2 novel which I looked into, because if you don't know, both of the localizations for the novels and DMC3 manga are pretty bad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I highlighted the part in the Japanese text that is equivalent to this part from the localization. Before the highlighted part, everything was translated ok, but you can see how different that part is.
Was the change necessary? It was such a complicated phrase that wouldn't make sense to the English speakers? 魔王と対峙するダンテの目には いささかの遠巡も、そして迷いもない 「おねんねの時間だぜ、ムンドゥス!」 その軽口もまた、まったく損なわれる気配はない。
Translation: Dante stood before the Demon Emperor, not a hint of hesitation or uncertainty in his eyes.
"It's past your bedtime, Mundus!"
Even now, his wisecracking attitude was still strong." (another tl: Even in this moment, he didn't hold back on the wisecracks.)
The Japanese sentence is a remark from the narrator. The English one is Dante having an inner monologue.
Also, from the Japanese sentence, you can tell that Dante was making fun of Mundus, talking down to him, because おねんね means bedtime, but it's how you would say it to a child, so it would be something like "nighty-nighty", hence why it mentions his 'wisecracking attitude.
I've seen on Twitter that according to Shankar, the joke he made about Skeletor is the only one like that with self-awareness.
But, just saying. I'm biased to the source material, not the translation. People were arguing over the fact that Dante is cringe and like, yeah he says and does goofy stuff however he was always confident when doing them, he wouldn't comment on them.
Anyway, just wanted to show this because when I came across it, people were saying this is proof that he has done it before.
As for the joke he said in the trailer, I'll give it a pass, if indeed that will be the only one like that. If he just wanted to reassure that lady he saved, then it's fine, but if ends up commenting on his one-liners many times, then it would be poor writing in my opinion. Part of Dante's charm is that he says those one-liners with confidence.

Finished DMC2 - Devil May Cry 2. I like Dante and Lucia. I haven't beaten hard mode yet, but I'm not really in a rush.
It's not the worst game in the world. I've played worse games. I had fun. That being said, I have seen criticisms before going into this, and upon playing the game for myself, I 100% see why people don't like this game.

Rant time?
Okay, so I watched the Netflix DMC show. I usually don't really share my opinions on things but... well...
This will most likely be a mini-rant of sorts, feel free to skip this. Also:
SPOILERS WARNING! (for pretty much all episodes as I have binged it all)
I don't really want to be too negative here, that isn't really my intention, but I can't guarantee I will have many good things to say either. You have been WARNED.
Tumblr media
For those skipping, have a quick Lady art :>
So after watching all of the episodes, gosh, I have so many questions I don't even know where to begin with this.
I started watching this with a neutral attitude. I didn't really have any high expectations or anything. I was kind of expecting to be disappointed to be honest. It is what it is after all.
Okay, let's start off with the things I did like and enjoy:
The art! I feel like the style and animation were really nice (the 3d demons were honestly not as bad as I initially thought they would be LOL).
Dante.
The White Rabbit. When I first saw him I was pretty excited and honestly I think he delivered (even though he is completely different than the bunny from the OG source material, like many characters). I enjoyed the moments with him the most out of all.
ARIUS AND LUCIA MENTIONED!!!! Outside of the fact Lucia being really pale which threw me off like hell, I'm happy to see those two again (but maybe it's just my DMC2 loving heart... maybe).
And... that would be about everything I remembered liking about it. Do keep in mind I have issues remembering things a lot of the time and so my brain might have skipped over some parts.
Now, what I didn't like? Pretty much everything else. But let's just get over some points that I think confused/annoyed me the most:
I think we need to address the elephant in the room and that is... Lady. Girl... what have they done to you 😭 Maybe it's just me, but this version of Lady was just... a very annoying bitch? And why, oh why, must she say "fuck" in literally every single sentence that comes out of her mouth? I don't mind characters swearing, don't get me wrong, I think Lady could totally swear every now and then without feeling OOC, I just think THIS was a bit of an overkill. It made it very hard to even try and enjoy her character for me personally.
The... uhh... enemy choices. Why the hell were Agni and Rudra there? Why the hell was Cavaliere Angelo there?! Huh?!
The setting (time-wise). I just can't tell when this is taking place or how old are the characters supposed to be. Some things lead me to believe this is set in a pre-DMC3 type of time, but then we have things like Vergil being Nelo Angelo already? Not even mentioning Dante getting his DT so early. And all those DMC5 references and outfits also threw me off. But again, maybe it's just me.
Making the 'good demons' + all/most humans bad was definitely a choice, alright.
Arkham better come back, that's all I'm gonna say.
America colonizes hell. America. Colonizes. Hell. HUH. (This made me laugh more than anything.)
I could probably go on for longer, but I really don't want to. I feel like it'd be pointless, besides most of the things I said had probably already been said by someone else and put together in a better way than I ever could. This is all purely my opinion and feelings.
My other gripe with this show is that it just focuses on all those, kind of out of nowhere, political points way too much. The whole demons good, humans (america) bad, it just feel so... odd? The DmC (reboot) game had way better groundwork for what they were going for here, I think. If it was an adaptation of the reboot instead, I would've perhaps enjoyed it more.
Overall, the Netflix DMC wasn't bad. It was nowhere near horrible as its own thing. But here is the key point: as its own thing. An AU of sorts. As an adaptation of the games it just doesn't really work, it's confusing. Or am I just a big dummy for not understanding a thing that was happening, trying to connect it to what I know and remember from the other media?
They have changed so much about the world and characters I don't even know what to fully think about it to be honest.
Okay let's get this over with. Time for the final thoughts.
My overall rating? I'd give it about 5/10 enjoyment wise. If you ignore the source material, throw it out the window and just not think much about what is happening, I guess it is a decently enjoyable watch. But as far as adaptations go, the 2007 anime did a FAR better job.
Will I watch the next season/s? Probably. Now that they have shown Arius, I want to see what they do with him (I am desperate for any crumbs of my babygirl... same for Lucia). But will I interact with this much (make fanart, talk about it)? No, probably not. (Okay, maybe a few drawings of Mr Easter Bunny will be made- 👀)
Anyways, I've put out my two cents here, sorry if this was hard to read, messy or if I simply overlooked/mixed up some things. My brain is kinda all over the place right now and I don't feel the best. Now that that's over, I'm off to go play Kenshi and suffer trying to 100% DMC2 again (it's taking me embarassingly long to get all those achievements in lol). I'll be seeing you (hopefully) soon with some art. Maybe.
Cheers! ✌️

"Nectar"
Characters:
Lady (Devil May Cry)
Trish (Devil May Cry)
Lucia (Devil May Cry)
Relationships:
Lady x Trish, incidental
Premise:
Trish and Lady are called to Vie de Marli for an unusual job.
Content Warnings:
Suicide ideation
Consumption of human blood
Author's Note:
This is my first time writing for Lucia. I haven't really played DMC2 from start to finish, but I think I get the gist of the character. Feedback is always welcome.
Lady crossed her arms, and looked up at the clocktower standing before her. "This is the place, right?"
Trish nodded. "This is the place."
Lady looked back to her partner. "Did she tell us anything about this job?"
"Not really." Trish put her hands on her hips. "Just that there's a demon threatening Vie de Marli, that she can't deal with on her own."
"Some 'Protector' she must be..." Lady sighed. "And you're sure this wasn't some excuse to get Dante to come here?"
"Trust me, she's good at what she does." Trish corrected.
Lady rolled her eyes. "If you say so..."
"And I'm sure." Trish continued. "She still asked for us to come even after I told her that Dante is in the Underworld, remember? Besides, the call sounded really urgent. Like she was in danger herself."
"Alright." Lady slung Kalina Ann off of her shoulder. "Let's get this over with." She fired her grappling hook to the top of the clock tower, and braced her feet against the wall.
Trish stepped up behind Lady, wrapped her hands around her shoulders, and wrapped her legs around her waist. "I'm ready when you are."
"Trish, you can fly."
"We're in public. We do want to freak out the locals, do we?"
"Like a heavily armed foreigner abseiling up the side of a clock tower wouldn't do the job?"
"Well, maybe I just wanted an excuse to hold onto my hot girlfriend." Trish smiled.
"Trish, we're working right now."
"Well, if you really think you can't carry me, I'll hop right off..."
"Playing to my ego, now? I'm starting to think you're just lazy."
"I'm just trying to be realistic, baby. You're only human, and you are halfway through your life already..."
"Not called for."
"Am I wrong? Then prove it."
Lady huffed. "Well-played."
At once, Lady hit a trigger on Kalina Ann, and began to ascend the building, Trish holding her body tightly.
Trish let out a giggle.
* * *
The pair reached the top of the tower, and looked around for their client. Eventually, they spotted her, sitting in a far corner.
Trish approached her first, with Lady following close behind. "Lucia?"
"Hello..." Lucia spoke weakly. Upon closer inspection, she did not appear to be in good condition. The skin on her face appeared to be flaking away, and her eyes had changed to a sickly yellow-green color. She was also shaking.
Trish crouched in front of her. "Are you alright? Who, or what, did this to you?"
"No one... This was always going to happen-" Lucia was cut off by a coughing fit. "-eventually."
Trish cocked her head. "What do you mean?"
"The first thing you should know about me is that I'm..." Lucia sighed. "...A demon."
"Obviously." Trish stated bluntly. "I've never known a human who can fight the way you do."
Lucia continued. "I was one of many created by a man called Arius, a sorcerer who wished to rule the world. But I was 'defective', and he discarded me. A woman named Matier discovered me, and raised me as her own daughter. Many years passed before I learned the truth."
Trish nodded.
"When I met Arius, he told me that everything returns to its original form. It seems that he was right... I tried to deny it, but deep down I always knew he was..."
"What do you mean?" Trish crossed her arms.
"It started about one month ago, when Matier... She passed." Lucia's voice broke. "It was she who raised me to be human. It was her love that kept me human. Not long after she was gone, I began to feel these... Cravings."
"Oh..." Trish interjected. "You mean for human blood, don't you?"
Lucia nodded. "I tried to fight it, but as my body grew weaker, so did my resolve... Two days ago, I nearly attacked a civilian."
Trish frowned. "Lucia, did you call us here to kill you?"
"...I've accepted that there's no hope for me. I would rather die before losing myself to my true nature."
"Lucia..." Trish put a hand on Lucia's shoulder. "I know that what you're going through must be scary, but this isn't the way out."
"There is no way out!" Lucia spar. "It's only going to get worse..."
Lady butted in. "Can I ask you something?"
Lucia's eyes met Lady's. Her stomach growled. "...She shouldn't be here."
Lady laughed. "If you could pose any threat to me, in the state that you're in, then it's time for me to hang up my guns." She continued. "So you've never drank blood before? In your whole life?"
Lucia shook her head. "Absolutely not."
"Frankly, I find that hard to believe. You've always been a demon, right?"
Lucia's eyes fell.
"Hm..." Lady placed a hand on her chin. "Matier, your mother... She was human, right?"
Lucia nodded. "Yes."
"Did she cook for you?"
"Yes. We often had dinner together..." Lucia's stomach growled again.
"I think that solves it, then. Your mother was feeding you her blood."
"What?!" Lucia's eyes were wide. "That's not possible!"
"It's the only thing that is possible." Lady asserted.
"She's right, Lucia." Trish added. "The only thing in the Human World that can sustain a demon is human blood."
"But..." Lucia trailed off. She quickly began to cry.
Trish and Lady looked to one another, unsure of how to respond.
Lucia continued. "Why did she hide the truth from me? Why did she always hide the truth from me?"
Lady sat beside Lucia. "A parent will do some really stupid things, if they think it's in their child's best interests. As much as she kind of screwed you up, I think she really loved you."
"She did..." Lucia wiped her tears. "Then why did she leave me unprepared?"
"That's a good question... Was she expecting to die?" Lady asked.
"It was rather sudden, actually. Do you think she intended to tell me?"
"I'm sure she did." Lady nodded. "Maybe she just put it off for too long. It sounds like she never wanted you to feel different."
"Right... Right, that makes sense." Lucia's voice grew steadier.
Trish spoke up. "You know, Lucia... I'm a demon too. And I've lived peacefully among humans for years now."
"You have?" Lucia looked to Trish. "But how?"
"By staying fed. Lady makes sure of that."
Lady nodded. "Our top theory is that blood offered willingly is especially potent. She doesn't even need to feed from me that much."
"That, and Lady's body is just incredibly fit and strong." Trish added.
"Well, of course it is, but I'm one-of-a-kind. In the long term, Lucia needs someone who trusts her and cares for her like Matier did."
Lucia nodded. "That makes sense..." She sighed. "I'm sorry about this."
"It's alright. I mean, who in the devil hunting trade hasn't felt like dying before?"
"Lady..."
"Kidding, Trish. But seriously, we're happy to help. In fact, here-" Lady drew a knife from her belt, and pricked her finger. "-this one's on the house."
Lucia hesitated for but a moment. "...Okay." She placed her lips on Lady's finger, closed her eyes, and began to suckle.
"Atta-girl." Lady gave her a pat on the back.
Lucia's flesh began to mend, and she soon pulled away. She opened her eyes, which returned to their normal color. "Wow..."
Trish chuckled. "She hits like a truck, doesn't she?"
Lucia managed a smile. "I do feel a lot better... Thank you, Lady."
"Sure thing." Lady smiled back, as she wrapped a band-aid around her finger. "And there's more where that came from, we'll send you a stockpile."
Trish interjected. "But in the long term, you should really work on making some friends. Isolating yourself isn't gonna protect anyone, you're just gonna hurt yourself more. Trust me, I've seen it happen. Besides, people are more accepting than you think. If someone really knows you and cares about you, they'll accept you for who you really are."
Lucia sighed. "That's a lot to think about."
"I can imagine." Trish wrapped her arm around her. "Don't be afraid to reach out to me if you need someone to talk to."
"Thank you, Trish. Thank you both." Lucia stood. "I know I never promised payment, but I feel that I owe you something for the trouble."
"Well, now I'm pretty hungry." Lady stood up herself. "Maybe you could introduce us to some of the local cuisine?"
Trish stood as well. "I could certainly go for a bite."
Lucia smiled. "I would like that."

New DMC Anime Trailer Breakdown Part 2
Hit the image limit on Part 1 so to a new post we go!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This guy that Dante punches has a bunch of metal on his face, and what might be a prosthetic, might just be a metal glove. What's interesting is this anime has Dante fighting a lot of humanoid characters, which is a little bit of a departure from some of the games, but honestly not that crazy. He does fight people from time to time across various media, and in the DMC1 Novel we even hear about the people who hunt him down. What has me interested here is whether this guy is fully human, or if he's been modified in some way, and if he's been modified, if he'll have any demonic traits or it'll just be the metal. It would be interesting to contrast a human trying to transcend normal human limits through human means (by making themself into a machine) with Arkham, who is a human trying to transcend humanity by using demonic power to achieve godhood.
Tumblr media
Skipping a bit so if you want to see the things between the last two images please go to my previous post where I ran out of room. As for the two green/turtle-like demons Dante fights on the rooftop, I've got to say I'm a little disappointed in some of the demon design. I love how creepy/demonic a lot of DMC demons are, and while some of them would probably be hard to animate, I feel like they still could've been more...I don't know. Creepy looking? Compare it to the Hell Gluttony from DMC3, which is a much creepier/more scary DMC cloaked enemy. Not sure if the demon above was meant to call back to these guys, but I think it would've been fun to have some references to DMC enemies even with the generics.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for the shot above this, seeing this shot all I could think was "infested chopper" and I haven't even played DMC2. I've just seen the memes. '
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zooming in I'm not sure who this guy is supposed to be. (Right image comes from later in the trailer). It can't be Agni because we've already seen him and the blade doesn't match. This demon wields a sword and has something in the middle of his chest though. I have a feeling that's going to be important. (Also complete crackpot theory: this guy's hair is a similar color to the pendant(?) from earlier, but surely this can't be related). He looks mutated, with more spikes emerging from his right arm, so I wouldn't be surprised if this was a human turned demon or something.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Looking at the gatling gun and missile heading toward an armored truck, I wonder if the military is going to get involved in this one. Police officers showed up a few times in the old anime, and the military DID come for the Qliphoth incident in DMC5, so it's possible the military may intervene in this one. That the missile is heading for an armored truck is interesting though. Are there two human factions at war with each other? Will this missile be deflected? Will it be just the military, or will there be groups like the ones we see Dante fighting that may get involved? The giant portal to Hell that opened up in the sky could definitely draw attention.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we have red eye/ red sclera Dante while fighting mysterious red guy from above! Interesting. We see that in the DMC3 manga too (assuming his sclera are meant to be red here instead of black). Both he and Vergil do it.
Tumblr media
I'll probably also do a write up on overall thoughts, but I'll cut it here so I can link these posts. Edits to come!

dante and lucia are spinning in my mind since aaaaaages.... so I drew their kid :'3 say hi to her!!! (don't have a name for her yet)
what I have in mind rn is that she's got a calm and easy-going personality, she's not as crazy as her dad. Since dante pretty much ghosted lucia after dmc2, Id like to think that she never got to know her dad up until she's a late teen/early adult. Dante being a deadbeat dad has its consequences of course, so their relationship is rocky at best.
She dyes her hair red to resemble her mom more.

DMC Netflix Thoughts Part 1
Okay so...I watch the anime and seeing the disclosure online. Here are my thoughts. The positives, the cons, the mixed bags, the reasoning behind certain decisions and things that are added but would of been better. Now that Season 2 is officially announced. I want to see this DMC show get better, because I have a lot to say about this series. Also spoilers. If you haven't seen the anime but want to. Go ahead. To those who did and want to convey what was good and bad about the anime. Here it is. This is going to be long but please bear with me! Because this is going to be four-part on my thoughts since the ranting and analysis is a lot of writing! Plus this post might have grammar errors and such so again, this is my thoughts. Don't take my word for it. Okay, let's get into it!
----- Pros:
------ Animation and action scenes are pretty great! In fact, they were cool. Certain scenes , such as the raid, the diner, the fall after the airplane explosion, and the final battle. I know some certain scenes need work but it wasn't bad. Dante, the character, is okayish. Sure, his quips don't hit as well, but some say that he's the novel version. I haven't read the novel version but given the guns he was using. It's safe to say that he doesn't have Ebony and Ivory yet. He jests. However, he is far from the Dante we know and love. I blame wriitn for time. Small flashbacks about Dante's childhood. I was kinda glad that they added this part, but I wish they would go more into it. Hopefully, we might get more of that in Season 2.
Enzo. Listen, Enzo, as the character is done pretty well. Sure, he's the side character, but it's surprising that they got him right as being a grey character as a middle man, being more human than most characters. Hell, I know he's from DMC3 manga, and he is from the Bayonetta as well in a different version. So I like his character and what he did for Dante. I didn't like that he had to die, though. That made no sense...
I mean if you play the Bayonetta games where Enzo is in. Then the VA and writing did him well until Enzo's death. Now let's get into the cons. And there's a lot.
-------- The Cons: -------
Lady. I hate how she is written. Now I understand Lady's gripe with demons is because of the death of her mother, who was killed by her father,r who turned into demon. But I do not like her cursing the word 'fuck' it feels so childish? She never curses this much. Sure she said 'bitch' 'damn you' and all that.
Yes, she can be harsh in her words, but she doesn't swear like a sailor. Not only that, she's the side character! I know Lady can handle herself against demons thanks to the training in the game, and the heck she was trained in DarkCom to get to where she was,s but come on, she hogs all the spotlight most of the time and takes some of the strong demons' kills. She should be assisting the kills. Lady gets more screentime than Dante. DMC is Dante's. Not Lady's. Episode 6 is a good job of demonstrating who she is. We thought after the battle against White Rabbit, and seeing what the VP did by calling her team expendables. You will think she will team up. No. She shot Dante with a tranquizer and put him in a cryochamber for the sake of the world. Which is the dumbest thing ever because she shot herself in the foot. Lucia from DMC2. She should not be struggling against a bunch of Darkcom soldiers. She's an artificial demon made by Arius, she should not lose against humans! Especially if she is a demon hunter and was trained. She should not be captured! In fact, she was raised by Maiter, one of the members of the Protector. A clan that summoned Sparda to defeat an evil demon named Argosax! She should not be treated as an Easter Egg in episode 1! Hopefully, she will get a good comeback in Season 2, hopefully freeing Dante from his cryochamber since Arius is involved now. Next, the Demons from previous Games. The worst one is how the Netflix writing treated Agni and Rudra. I am going to be honest, I love those two, and I hate how vindictive they sound. Taunting and saying the worst things on the Airplane Episode to Dante about his mother and brother. They were never this vindictive against Dante in the DMC3 they're more like...well.. friendly as long as nobody gets past them. They were not good, but they're not evil. at first, they were cordial because they never had guests and they wanted to be nice, plus one of them is curious about things like 'what's a sigh?' You gotta admit, it's pretty funny and endearing. They only attack when Dante wants to go through their gates. It's their job as guardians of Temi-ni-gru. And after they are defeated, they acknowledge Dante strength and want to be taken with him on the journey. Under Dante's condition that they don't talk. Hell, they compliment Dante for doing sweet moves after gaining their swords. When I play the game after beating it, they shout attacks and they laugh. Honestly, it feels great as a player. Because I don't feel lonely going up the tower with these two. I know it sounds dumb, but I like having them around. If I am demon hunter, I would freaking hang out with them and teach them about human customs! Okay, sorry for the tangent! I just like Agni and Rudra a lot as demon characters and devil arms! Hell, they're the hardest to beat when I fight them in the games, so it feels rewarding to earn them! So it pisses me off to see them treated like this. They barely work together, and they act like useless henchman, which they are not! Whose idea is to put them on an Airplane?! I don't blame White Rabbit. I blame the writers. That's the worst character assassination if I see it. They could put Beowulf, Phantom, or Malphas, replacing the two because they are way more evil about it. Heck, have those three use human disguises or something! But who knows? If they did survive, they might use their swords as their new heads, but I digress. More on Part 2 about Cons.

Here we go.
Firstly: observe the oil painting. Observe that the Sparda family would have needed to sit and pose for this fucking painting for what had to be hours. The boys absolutely lived with and knew and interacted with their father and were aware of his existence and nature, just saying (fuck the netflix show).
Tumblr media
This painting is also actually based on a piece of unused concept art from all the way back in DMC1.
Tumblr media
I think it's really cool how they took something that wasn't even used in the final game and repurposed it to function as a piece of Sparda family history.
The leitmotif of the games credits song "Legacy" starts playing as Dante is walking up to the house. That song is about Sparda and his lineage, so it is obviously very appropriate that we first hear it when Dante returns to his long lost childhood home. A home he has apparently never visited since that fateful day, considering he wasn't even aware it was still left standing. It's likely that Dante wanted to distance himself from it as much as he possibly could, even after discarding his Tony Redgrave identity. Dante does not want to revisit the past, it's too painful for him. When he first steps foot in the house, notice how the camera angle changes to looking at him from inside the closet. The same closet he hid inside when he was a child.
Dante muses that he always wondered why Sparda left him the Rebellion. I talked about this in this post but in terms of the metanarrative, Rebellion was a sword they essentially made up for DMC2 to replace Force Edge/Alastor probably without giving it much thought, whereas the Yamato was established in the very first game as Sparda's sword. The metatext of Vergil getting Sparda's sword as created and designated by Hideki Kamiya's foundational game, and Dante being retroactively bestowed a sword that the developers made up to fill space in the botched creation of the second game, is worthy of analysis in and of itself. Vergil is of course the older brother, so he gets the "more important" sword. Dante's inherited sword is basically an accident. I find it very prescient that the Rebellion is destroyed in this game, and entirely replaced by a devil sword of Dante's own name and creation.
The Yamato's power was always in destruction. In cleaving things in two, whether it be worlds or men. The true potential of the power in Rebellion comes not from destruction, but in creation. In combining disparate elements that were never meant to mix together, and resulting in something infinitely more powerful than they ever could have been alone. Narrative, what is that saying about what Sparda wanted for his children to inherit from him? Why DID Sparda leave Vergil the Yamato and Dante the Rebellion? We can never really know. But in terms of the metatext of the Rebellion's history as the result of the franchises game development, I find it very uplifting that Dante is taking the destroyed remnants of something that originated from "the worst game in the series" and making something new out of it. Very much like how Itsuno took the shattered leftovers of what they cobbled together in the creation of DMC2, and produced DMC3 in its aftermath.
Dante is also of course finally confronting his past, from his childhood loss and from the painful encounters with Vergil from DMC3, and through that painful acknowledgement is able to finally move forward. Instead of simply using the handmedowns from his father, Dante carries on Sparda's legacy by forging and claiming his own identity. In the birth of a new Devil Sword. Just as Sparda used a sword that shared his name, so too now does Dante wield the Devil Sword Dante. A physical manifestation of his will and power, which also allows him to transcend to a level beyond what his demonic heritage imbues him with. I don't think it's up for debate anymore that Dante has truly surpassed his father, and is now more powerful than Sparda ever was. Replicating Sparda's own feat of creating a Devil Sword that shares his name proves that.
Some people actually called this, btw. They guessed that Dante would get a sword called Dante, just like how Sparda's sword was called Sparda. It was such an incredible moment when this happened while playing the game for the first time and seeing the weapon pop up like that saying that the Sword literally was named Dante.
The ensuing fight against Urizen is basically a gimme, and a soft tutorial for the Sin Devil Trigger. The Sin Devil Trigger was actually in DMC2, as a random occurrence whenever activating Devil Trigger. Just like the Rebellion itself, the developers took the concept from that game and imbued it with infinitely more narrative importance than it originally had.
I want to think that there might be some significance to the fact that the Qliphoth achieved its final achievement producing the fruit at 12PM June 15th? Considering Dante's home was attacked on the 16th, as mentioned in a newspaper clipping in the games library. Hard to say. the game certainly seems to give a lot of importance to the dates and timeline of the story, but I can't quite put my finger on it specifically.

Some thoughts on the new Devil May Cry Anime...
On the one hand, I completely understand why they don't have Reuben Langdon voicing Dante in this new anime. Ignoring the problematic shit for a moment, it does make sense to use a younger sounding VA too- as much as I hate the change, I understand it.
On the other hand, choosing Johnny Yong Bosch specifically to voice him means it's literally only going to sound like Nero. I watched that trailer, immediately went "fuckin hell, why does he sound like Nero?" and then saw the comfirmation. Now JYB is an awesome VA and I am a fan of his work but he IS Nero, it just. It really doesn't feel right at all.
Could they not have picked someone else?
Now I used to be a massive fan of Reuben Langdon- Devil May Cry and his other VA, stuntwork and acting- and I can admit to still having some cognitive dissonance around Dante and Reuben in general. I wish it wasn't the case that his voice is completely synonymous with Dante to me (despite DMC1 & DMC2) but it is.
To his credit, the two conversations I've had with the guy when I disagreed with the crap he was spouting he was also pretty respectful and reasonable. Still, this was years ago and over the years since the more crap that came out I definitely lost the appreciation I had for him, I can safely say he's a talented man but I'm no longer a fan.
I suppose in terms of the whole "That's not my Dante!" side of things, if we want an anime with Reuben Langdon as Dante, well, we already have that, and it's still one of my favourites despite all the crap.
It would have been really nice to have someone new to the franchise to voice him- a fresh start for Dante that could have continued in new games and media.

Netflix Devil May Cry storyboards
Devil May Cry was shown on Netflix Geeked and a few storyboards/rough drawings were showed and it's possible (it wasn't confirmed) that one character might be Lady based on her appearance. She has short hair and uses two pistols. If that's her in this adaptation, I personally don't like it because it's cliche treatment of sexy women and of course she has to be covered up. Again, hopefully it's not her but if it is, then I hope that won't be her outfit throughout the series.
So yeah, here are a few screenshots from the trailer, we have the military fighting against demons from the looks of it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As someone who dislikes the one retelling we got about Devil May Cry, I was concerned when this IP was given once again to someone else and it's also a Netflix adaptation which nowadays, there are cases of established IPs that can have great differences regarding the characters, in terms of personality and design and it's what I talk about in this post, referring to Dante and Lady, even though it's not confirmed that it was her in these storyboards.
So here we are, another studio has played with an established series and not even the supposed supervision from Hideaki Itsuno makes me optimistic about this adaptation, because I think he'll just let it be like DmC, we can get awful characterization but as long as there are cool and stylish fight scenes, that's all that matters.
Oh boy, so Dante's outfit and hairstyle…They tried to combine elements of his outfits and they gave him suspenders?! I thought it was kinda lame at first but then I realized that it's maybe similar to Leon in Resident Evil, like maybe they are part of the gun holsters.
These storyboards shows him with his shirt being ripped and at first I didn't notice the shirt and thought "Oh does this take place in DMC3?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't think we can expect him to be shirtless, it was just made to acknowledge his look in DMC3.
Most fans assume that we have seen takes place during the time where Dante was calling himself "Tony" because in the trailer it was noted that he didn't have Ebony and Ivory. Speaking of, man did they tease us with DmC Ebony and Ivory...
I was hyped to see Dante without his shirt, believing that the scene takes place in DMC3 but no, his shirt was ripped.
I can't say that I'm a fan of his hairstyle. Looks more fitting for Nero in my opinion. Throughout the series he had long hair and I guess it looks a bit similar maybe to his DMC2 style but I personally don't like this poofy hairstyle.
Tumblr media
Also, how old do you think he's supposed to be, especially seeing that he's so ripped? His face makes it seem like he's over 20, maybe close to 30. Another curiosity related to design, this time about Rebellion. Is it the awakened form or not? Did they mess up the details? In it's awakened form the bones on the side are raised like it's shown here, but the skull's mouth is closed.
Tumblr media
If things go with the retcon that was made with the first novel where Dante was "Tony", he had Rebellion from the start instead of Force Edge like in DMC1, because it was retconned and he gets Force Edge at the end of DMC3.
So yeah, if this is how Rebellion will be shown from the start, then maybe we won't even see Dante getting stabbed with his sword that unlocks his demonic power, they could just not include the thing that's like a tradition throughout the games.
We'll have to see in what other ways he will have his demonic side unlocked...
Regarding his amulet, I made a previous about it here.
TL;DR the outline of the adaptation's plot suggests that Dante's amulet, if we can even call it that cause it's just the gemstone, might be the Perfect Amulet so it could mean that Vergil doesn't have his own amulet because somehow only Dante managed to hold on to it after they were separated when demons attacked them as children.
I hope it gets upgraded and looks fancier, like the one in the games.
So yeah, that's about it in regard to design. I hope that when it comes to personality, he won't be like DmC Donte, where he says "fuck" so many times and other profanities excessively (which is something I recall hearing from those who watched Castlevania) because that's show you write an edgy badass character. T_T Because that's the Dante we know and love, they think we want the reboot Dante...
Alright, moving on to Lady, who although wasn't confirmed to be this character we see in this drawing, it does look like it can be her, because of the short hairstyle and she was seen using two pistols. I think they would release a trailer from the final product to present her, so that's why we can't say for certain that's her, but if it is, these are my concerns for Lady, who I consider a badass woman.
Tumblr media
Which is problematic for the "modern audience", for the Western audience because nowadays, and most commonly when it's female characters from anime/manga and video games, they get censored when it comes to their clothing, like no, for the "modern audience", a strong female character must be covered up, maybe have a shaved head and have a face full of piercings.
Lady had stylish outfits, that yeah, it showed her cleavage, had short pants but we probably won't see outfits like that on her in this adaptation. I use Twitter most of the time, I see how the Western fandom bitches about fictional female characters.
Personality wise, a strong female character has to talk down to everyone, especially to men, won't accept help from anyone, can't cry because that's weakness,.
That's the girl-boss image that I do not wish for Lady. I hope that if that is actually her in the drawing that suit is just an uniform because it's possible that she might belong to a group, like maybe special forces or something like the dudes in the storyboard and that would be the backstory how she trained to fight which is something that wasn't explained in regard how she was so skilled in DMC3 when at the time she was a high-schooler.
It's too bad that the third chapter of the DMC3 manga was never made. Like if there were plans for it, the ideas that would have been used could still be in what I assume is an archive for DMC at Capcom.
Weird that Bingo Morihashi wasn't the writer of the manga even though it must have been in production along with the game, the manga was even released in Japan before the game and there must have been some consultation between the authors. It would be cool if Lady's backstory would be mentioned in the games and Capcom would actually bring up the manga and the ideas that could have been for that chapter about Lady.
So yeah, in conclusion, I'm still pessimistic about this adaptation...Maybe one day Capcom can make a more faithful adaptation that will bring together moments from the various media, like the novels and manga. Also, make it a production made by Japanese studio and with people that were part of the creation of the games. We have seen what happened with the reboot. When I see cases of established IPs handled by those who are not the original authors, they come with the assurance that they will be made for the "modern\global" audience which is something that I personally don't subscribe to.
It's just telling me that someone will borrow someone else's work, change the character's looks and and personalities, disregarding available source materials.
What are your opinions about the adaptation?

Can I request lots of angst.....Dante (between anime and DMC2) falls in love with a sweet and kind reader quickly, his demon side wanting to make her his mate, they are soul mate kind. But memories of Nelo Angelo were too strong, he hasn't forgiven himself, rather tries the route of alcoholism or over indulgence with flings or ONS making the reader so heartbroken, yet she knows Dante's story and still tries to help him through. Once Dante even snapped hard on her to make her snap away, she did cry and ran away from the shop feeling heartbroken. But she still won't give up our flower here is stubborn. I will leave it to you on how Dante will come to realize that this girl ain't budging and he can't live without her, now that he knows his mate (not yet but that's what his demon side says) exists.
Hope I made it angsty enough. Enjoy. 💜
Fated (DMC2!Dante x Fem!Reader angst)
The red thread of fate had intertwined both yours and Dante's fates since the day you were born. Ever since he was a child, he dreamt of you; all he could see were blurry figures and occasional glimpses of your figure, nothing more.
As he grew older, the images of you became more clear. He started to see you as more of a person and less of a mass of blurry shapes. He soon began to see and memorize every feature on your face; longing to know who you were and if you were even real.
After the various traumatic events that transpired, his dreams abruptly stopped. He no longer saw the beauty that normally visited him every night in his dreams, and as a result, soon forgot about you.
That was, until he randomly ran into you on his way home from a job. The minute he laid his eyes on you, he knew who you were. Every detail about your appearance suddenly came rushing back to him, his mind overflowing with thoughts about you. His heart suddenly started racing--and not because of adrenaline. He honestly didn't know what he was feeling, and he didn't like it.
"Hi? My name is...umm...Y/N. What's yours?"
Dante's eyes widened; something inside him clicked. Finally. After all those years of wondering and fantasizing, he finally got to hear your voice--your name. The devil hunter was beside himself with excitement and joy, and at the same time, fear and panic.
You were his soul mate, destined to be with him for all eternity. Why should he be anything but ecstatic?
Because of loss.
Because of grief.
Because Dante hadn't fully let go of everything thata happened.
Because Dante wasn't ready to let go.
Memories of that whole Nelo Angelo incident and everything that came before and after it still lurked in the depths of his mind, manifesting in the form of crushing, terrifying tentacles that wrapped around his heart, squeezing it; constraining it.
The man was trapped in his own emotions, unable to break free from his trauma.
It took all his strength to overpower his fear and introduce himself, though he did so bluntly.
"My name's Dante. Nice to meetcha." And with that, he was off, briskly striding away, presumably never to be seen again.
But he was seen again, many times too. The red thread of fate controlled your destinies; it was not to be deterred by the delusions and desires of the human--or half human--heart. It created more opportunities for you two to meet, be it a chance encounter at the supermarket, or a random rendezvous in the middle of the street.
As time passed, and the two of you got to know each other further, Dante found himself growing more and more attached to you, unable to figure out why. At night, his dreams were filled of you, and during the day, he thought about nothing except you. A small, barely noticeable part of him--his demon part--knew why, but Dante's human half refused to accept it.
"You love her," The quiet voice whispered, in that buzzing, nagging tone it always did. "You love her--you want to make her yours. Make her your mate for life. So why don't you? What's holding you back?"
Dante groaned, fed up with these questions. Why? He didn't know why, dammit! He didn't want to know! He hated pondering these confusing topics to such a degree, he turned to the age-old practice of alcohol in an attempt to forget his troubles.
Every night, he'd squander his hard-earned money on cheap liquor in a seedy pub, gulping down bottle after bottle of the nasty stuff. Very soon, it became apparent that alcohol wasn't enough to make him forget his conflicted feelings. This, and the influence of the substances he was consuming, drove him to start sleeping around; hooking up with one girl after another; the brief moments of ecstasy barely enough to overshadow his arguing inner conscience.
He had no idea how you felt; oblivious to your hidden heartbreak.
Ever since you met Dante, you knew he was familiar. Just like him, you'd been having dreams, and just like him, events in your life had caused you to forget about him until very recently. Once you met him in person, your memories and dreams resurfaced, followed by a sudden and inexplicable crush.
You soon found yourself longing for him--pining, even. You wanted so desperately to tell him how you felt, to make him yours, to love and cherish him truly. It took you weeks, but you worked up the courage to go and talk to him. When you knocked on the door of Devil May Cry, he was nowhere to be found. You inquired around and sought him out, looking in all the places you knew him to frequent. It didn't take you long to find him--you caught a glimpse of him making out in the back of a bar with a girl you'd never seen before, overturned shot glasses on the table beside them.
This was no surprise; during the many times you and Dante crossed paths, you'd gotten to know each other's backstories. You understood Dante's inner turmoil and understood he had problems, so excessive drinking and adultery was to be expected. You were not to be deterred by this, oh no. You were going to help him through whatever he was going through, no matter what he did or what he said.
Dante continued to ruin himself through his various acts of debauchery. Every night, he'd go out to a club or a bar, then get wasted and get lucky. You searched all over the city for him, but most of the time, he was long gone when you reached whatever shady place he'd been goofing around in. One night, you had the fortune of finding him at Devil May Cry, guzzling down a bottle of beer at his desk. You marched in, the sudden sound of the door opening causing him to jolt upright and peer at you wearily.
"What are you doing here?" He demanded, voice hoarse and eyes red. He honestly looked terrible; there were dark circles under his eyes from staying up too late, and his eyes were red rimmed and puffy--possibly from spending a long time crying. "Hi, Dante...I...I heard you were going through some stuff...and...well, I just wanted to know if I could help."
Dante scoffed, languidly lifting the bottle of alcohol to his lips and taking a long sip. "Help? Me? You want to help me?" He suddenly burst out laughing, then immediately stopped. "You can't help me," He grumbled, voice cold. "No one can." He continued drinking; the liquor drowning out his spiraling thoughts, temporarily silencing that little voice in the back of his head that said, "You love her."
Nervously, you edged forwards, afraid to get too close to him. "I can help you," You ventured, wringing your hands. "I know I can, if you just let me in--" Dante suddenly stood up, slamming his hands on the table angrily. That tiny voice in his head suddenly rose from a whisper to a loud yell. "You love her!" It screamed, the words driving Dante over the edge. "Just tell her!"
"You can't help me! I won't let you in! Just get out, Y/N, there's no saving me!"
You clenched your fists in anger, meeting his outburst with a defiant one of your own.
"You don't know that, you're just being stubborn!"
"So what if I am?! It's my problem and I'll deal with it!"
"No, you won't! You'll just waste your money and your life being a womanizer and drinking till you drop! This behavior isn't good for you, you need to stop before it gets out of control!"
"Shut up, my life is none of your business, so stay out of it!"
That shocked you. You and Dante never considered each other close friends, but what he said hurt you. "I see," You mumbled, clearing your throat and turning around. You heart heavy, you stormed away, hurrying to get home before the tears you were holding back broke free.
After you left, Dante sank into his seat, exhausted. Even though his mind was hazy because of the alcohol, he knew that you would be back; you were far too obstinate to be deterred by a simple outburst. His mind may have been filled with confusion and doubt, but one thing was for sure: He loved you, and perhaps someday in the distant future, with enough time and hard work, he would find it in him to tell you.
