I felt kinda weird listening to Wyll literally tell his dad "there's nothing to forgive" like he was apologizing for casting out his teenaged son and Wyll's like NAh. He feels the same about that whole situation as he did at the start of the game, I think I would've preferred some sort of change or development? not even something big but denying his fathers apology feels weird, even "I understand and respect why he did it but I wish he just listened instead of assuming I had anything but good intentions" ?? Like he was 17 when he made a deal with a devil to save the city, and he did!!!! But maybe that's just cause I'm mad that Ulders first words after being saved are shitting on Tav for his son being a demon lmaoooo

I have thots, but disclaimers upfront because I will be talking out of my ass for most of this:

All the D&D I've played have been in entirely homebrew worlds, because most of my friends are also writers or at least worldbuilders. So I have no previous experience with the Forgotten Realms or its canon, i.e. I had no idea who Ulder Ravengard was and why Wyll being his son was a big deal, though I assumed he was someone very important.

I never actually um. Finished Act 3. Yeah, I uninstalled the game before I finished it lmao. I kept thinking "oh I'll come back to it once Larian have fixed it!" *looks into the camera like I'm on The Office* I finished Karlach, Astarion, and Wyll's quests, though I didn't start the Ansur part of it because it felt kinda random, and obviously I knew we wouldn't be getting a cool epic dragon for an ally, so I decided to leave that bit for later with the other bigger companion quests like Lae'zel's, Shart's, and Gale's. Jokes on me, right?

But I did save Ulder with Wyll, and did pick the one option to show via tadpole that Wyll is a good sweet boy. And I got the underwhelming "nothing to forgive" reunion. So I do know that part.

I played only like. An hour of early access. And then dropped it and uninstalled the game because it didn't grab me. I certainly didn't meet Wyll, and even if I had, I think it would've been post-rewrites.

Okay, now onto my actual thots. It's extremely long lmao I love yapping.

First of all, I think Ulder disowning Wyll could have actually worked quite well if they'd kept old Wyll, who I hear was kind of an obnoxious, arrogant dude. Like, if your teen son is a bit of a knob, and you're the most important nobleman/politician in an important city, then it "makes sense" to disown him as a disciplinary measure. You know he can take care of himself, you know he's capable of greatness, but he's a bit of a dickhead and needs to grow up. So tell him to leave and maybe in a few years he'll sort himself out. It's fucked up, but it's the sort of thing I can see a guy in this situation and in this world do.

BUT. Wyll isn't an arrogant and obnoxious dude. He's very mature, very kind, and always well-meaning. Nothing indicates this was different when he was a teen. So Ulder disowning him feels disproportionately cruel from the start, and it is, but it also feels like it comes out of nowhere and makes Ulder looks less like a strict parent and a politician doing what he thinks is the best out in a bad situation, and more like ... well, like a fucking asshole. Hence why it feels so fucking unfair and unfinished that Wyll just forgives him, or rather says there's nothing to forgive? It feels like Wyll constantly has to take on the role of the adult, of the emotionally mature one, of the one who is too good-hearted and understanding to ever feel anything negative, while his garbage dad gets to just be a douchebag towards his son without much cause or consequence.

Furthermore, we never get the sense that Ulder feels bad or regrets what he did, or that he's at least conflicted, even with his apology. It's just "Yeah I disowned my son. No I don't expect him to come back better in any way." And then he flips on a dime after a single conversation, so his decision to disown Wyll feels like it was easily undone and not of any consequence. Wyll forgiving him immediately feels just very unearned, and like the narrative itself frames Ulder's actions as understandable? (On that note, showing Ulder some tadpole visions to prove Wyll is good, I prommy, feels so cheap? Like y'all really did that, huh? And Ulder, who assumed the worst when his beloved son showed up in a warlock pact, would just take the vague visions of a stranger when his son looks like a saucy incubus? Ok.)

Now, if Larian had wanted to stick with this, I think it could've worked this way if Wyll was afforded any sort of emotional depth. Like, if Wyll said "there's nothing to forgive" initially, because he loves and deeply respects his father and thinks, logically, that what he did was right, so he tries to justify it to himself in order for that cruel act to make sense. But then he realizes that it still hurts, that it was unfair, that it was cruel, and that he can't forgive his dad, not this easily at least. That initial "nothing to forgive" would've worked excellently as a kneejerk reaction, a defense mechanism, and something for him to later retract when he realizes that "nothing to forgive" means "nothing you do would make me forgive you". That would've been juicy as FUCK.

If Larian had instead wanted to afford Ulder more depth and make us understand his actions (which they wanted to do with Wyll saying there's nothing to forgive, signalling to us that Ulder in some ways was justified), then they should've made Wyll a huge brat as a younger teen. If they'd done that, we as modern players would still find it a bit unfair, but a nobleman disowning his rowdy-ass son for taking an escapade a step to far, to teach him a lesson? That makes sense, doesn't it? It would've been a strict parent thing to do, but assuming Ulder knew his son would make it on his own, cutting him off from the privilege that's turning him into a dickhead would be a sensible course of action. If that's what happened, then it would've also made sense for Ulder to immediately get pissed off when he saw Wyll transformed, because he'd assume that his cringefail son didn't learn his lesson at all. AND it would've made sense for Wyll to say there's nothing to forgive: because he knows he used to be a huge fucking brat, and his Mizora thing would've just looked like another prank Youtuber oopsie to Ulder, who had no reason to believe otherwise.

Now, Larian did neither of these things, or rather, tried to do both without actually committing, because then it would make one of the two look "bad" (i.e. like a real flawed human being). That's why it ends up feeling incongruent and, say it with me now, unfinished. There is no logical progression to their actions, because, say it with me now, nobody bothered to give them consistent motivations or depth.

Here's the two plots laid out in order to illustrate what I think would be logical courses of actions for both characters, compared to what Larian actually did:

And the thing is, given that I was able to piece together what they were going for and two entire potential angles that could've worked excellently, it's clear that there are bits of potential, little inklings of what could have been, but the writer just didn't bother exploring deeper at all? Like they had some ideas that they threw at the wall and then didn't rewrite or think about them at all. It feels like a first draft of a character's story, where you have some ideas but haven't figured out the overall structure or progression of events. Instead you just throw in everything you have and pretend that's a finished story and that the inconsistencies are just "depth" and "nuance", when in reality, you're just asking the player to fill in the gaps you couldn't be bothered with, and when they can't do that because it makes no damn sense, you just ignore them lol.

I'm cocooning a good chunk of my time around the revised version of Seasons for comfort reasons. But I'm also writing angst with lines like this: "I don’t wish for a loving parent—I wish for the family I came from to be loving." I wrote 1615 words in an hour-long sprint with my roommate earlier, and that came out of it. We're trying to be productive. I keep telling myself to work on something so I can prove I'm trying to work, but my mental state needs this catharsis again. I feel stupid and had a bad day at work yesterday, I feel stupid about peddling my writing only to look foolish for thinking anyone wants to see it, I miss my dog and can't afford to bring him home with me, I need to buy a new laptop bc my writing laptop is falling apart, and right now most of my money is going toward a car of which I'll probably have to buy an unreliable junker that'll cause more problems than it's worth later lmaoooo Just why even go forward lmao So I'm staying in Seasons world a bit. Ignoring the 23462141 problems I can't fix and the 10 tiny ass problems I can lmao Lies, I'm working on the 10 problems and probably like 60 of the ones I can't, and I'm so fucking done and tired and stupid for even giving this life a try again for no reason since all the things worth living for are 100% unobtainable for a dumbass fuckhead like me :)

wHY EXACTLY is this STILL in my purse 9 years later, you may ask?? honestly i have no idea, it's just force of habit, that's it's home and i'm not going to evict it, that would be cruel

but this notebook was there for my transition from Merlin fandom to Teen Wolf fandom, which is fun to flip through. it also holds the honor of being where i finished my beloved magnum opus TBAK!!!

handwriting is really the only time that i do the sketchy scratched out Let It Be Bad I'll Fix It Later In Editing style of writing. usually i'm way too much of a perfectionist for that and i'll edit line by line as i go and not move on from a scene until i'm completely satisfied with the way it is on the page. which is why i turn to handwriting when i'm stuck. it gives me permission to be messier and thus often unsticks me. all my notebooks are full of, like, bits and pieces of stories, jumping back in whenever i can't make words in my gdoc. which is kinda fun to look back on. polished gdocs don't show the process as well.

........so that was a fun trip down memory lane for me, not sure if that counts as a trick or a treat for you, hahaha

I enjoy my art style but I also feel insecure about my sketches so the feeling of posting something that will be reblogged only for me to make minor edits/improvements/adjustments later is DAKLSKLSDKLDSKL to me

Though I also get that this is a sketch (and my art will go through many different iterations) as I continue to refine it (and as my art style improves)

Basically, I adjusted the tilt of the head, moved the eyes down and slightly redrew it, adjusted the placement of the nose and mouth by a few pixels, shortened the length of the nose

Cuz with the whole pose in mind, I feel like having the head tilted sm messes with the flow of the pose (especially since the pose is so neutral) so I adjusted the head tilt

The proportions just look better to me now, so I fixed what was bothering me

As Cinna said, he's the type where he'll try to kill you (due to his bratty, spoiled, childish, violent tendencies) but it's usually not genuine, vehement hate

On the Dark Continent he doesn't even do anything violent to him. Lmaoooo.

Judar who threatens Alibaba like "How does he act so unfazed, I want to kill him!" And Alibaba is just like "I can hear you, you know…" And Alibaba is actually patient and understanding and humble, so he works incredibly well with someone like Judar

Like with EnNetsu and HoroRen, BOTH charas are stubborn and unyielding and would constantly butt heads with each other

But JuAli as a ship has more warmth and companionship imo so this one's the best to me (and Alibaba's calm and kind, patient, humble personality balances out Judar's personality and makes them work well together as a ship)

Cuz Istg Viz absolutely butchers individual characters' speech styles in their TLs and makes everyone sound the same

And it doesn't help that English sounds so samey compared to other languages. EA/SEA languages have such huge variations in speaking styles

Like in JP, characters' speech patterns automatically give you the vibe of someone who talks more curt~ish/rough/masc (like Judar) or uses more polite speech, or is formal/humble, etc.

God guys just know that I usually HATE the shounen protag trope

Like I always prefer antagonists and deuteragonists (protag's side allies and secondary charas) but my and my friend circle's love for Alibaba is just a testament to how good (well-written) he is

Alibaba you're one of the few only shounen protags I'll defend with my life

Most shounen protags piss me off, so I always prefer deuteragonists and antagonists lmao

Something about their moral hypocrisy, their nepotism, their naive self-righteousness that fails to account for others, the way they're never (or hardly ever) challenged in meaningful ways in the narrative, how they always win fights and get what they want without any struggle, etc. It's all so. Boring.

One of the worst examples I can think of with this is Shaman King

DW, JAE, I GOT YOU. the quest did leave me feeling kinda empty too and ik you're not a player, so let me explain the summary of the quest! >:)

if you wanna know, scara was the one who wanted to tamper with the irminsul himself so he could erase himself from everyone's memories. his line of thought was that if they've never met him, then all the wicked incidents (specifically, the tatarasuna incident where the people who took him in died because of dottore) that happened because of him would be gone... so, that those affected by it will live and he can right his wrongs that way.

but a mysterious woman voice (we speculate it's istaroth, the god of time) told the traveler that, not verbatim, although memories can be tampered with, the events still stay the same. even after scara did all that to erase everyone's memories of him so that they'll live, they still died but through different means — which meant that his sacrifice changed nothing but memories. only nahida, the traveler, and paimon are the ones who remember his past because everything still happened and his friends still died 😭

SO, BASICALLY !! scara thought that he'd fix his mistakes and redeem himself by taking himself out of irminsul like we expected, but it backfired on him and now, here he is. <//3

ngl, i felt a little empty because i was hoping that they'd elaborate about ei in this quest since it's centered around scara. but this whole being forgotten thing is still kinda trippy tbh fjwkfjjekd it's a 50/50 for me personally ;( but this quest was also the last shove into the scaranation because we finally got to properly interact with him and he is so stupid and cute and—

TODD TIME TRAVELLER THEORY/HC

I was eventually gonna make this into an angst fic but I JUST NEED TO TELL YOU ALL ABOUT IT (I also have a different plot device so this wont spoil it)

OKAY SO, at the very start of Todd's stay in his room like--

Todd synced his watch/clock together at THIS MOMENT, where Neil's father first ruined Neil's entire school year, removing his School Annual membership.

Still fixing it when he's invited to the study group as well

Then literally the next shot is the clock chiming (time/clock motif)

The central theme also of the movie is Making use of what little time you have left on earth with something that means a lot to you

Don't waste your time not doing something that'll make you truly alive.

They further emphasize this with classes reminding them of "DUE DATES, TOMORROW, THIS IS DUE BY THE END OF THE SEMESTER" further reminding us of "how little time" they have but they have so much to do.

But homeboy's next scene is him doing this 'promotional dps ad, obligatory motto of the movie, cliche commercial writing of Seize the Day'. BUT HOHOHOH LOOK, a watch, it's also clear in the audio; the watch Ticking faster and faster as he writes the words "Seize the Day". So yeah, I once thought this was cheesy, but like-- He literally HAS to SEIZE THE DAY or else--

I know this is a continuity error but:

This could imply Todd either:

tried to join them but chickened out so he studies alone

or this is a paradox todd and there are 2 twos in the same timeline cuz he was time travellig LMAOOOO

Ok so, ALSO TODD is the Time Keeper for the DPS meetings, JUST SAYING

We're on TODD'S TIMELINE because we're given his birthday. It happens at the mid point of the movie and most likely the mid point of the semester. Also helps cuz he's gonna remember this year A LOT.

Also ok before neil's final shot we get a shot (hehe) of Mr. Perry and his watch, very sus, but like, we're also focusing on the last TIME Mr. Perry had a son-- oof

ALSO, TODD LOOKS AT THE CLOCK BEFORE HE HAS TO SIGN THE DOCUMENT

And ok, anyway the movie ENDS with Todd's face too. the END of the movie, end of that experience for US.

We're asked to remember Todd like remembering our time, remember moments when we did or didn't do something interesting with our time.

But also.... like... if Todd could do it over, he'd go back to the time he first fixed his watch so he could get to know Neil all over again...

Or imagine him in an endless loop of trying to save Neil, every iteration he loses him somehow or ruins something if Neil is alive; in order for things to truly be in order, he had to stop messing with TIME.

Yoooo, this week's been hell for me and only yesterday did I get to sleep well. Thanks for the new update and I'm telling you I've been rereading it a lot and thus, have a lot of questions in mind (which you may or may not answer)

First off, I just wanna say that Mona is such an interesting character coz, Idk, am I the only one who can't pinpoint what character she really is? Like I don't know if she's supposed to be a good person or not. Like sometimes, I think of her like that one girl from heartstopper where the girl said "I'm an ally" who to me, is actually an ally but has no idea how to do it right? (Am I making sense lmao), but yeah idk. Plus I'm saying this coz Jin said, "Mona adopted me and gave me connections, so I talked nicely".

That means that he can betray her right? So that means she's jsut another vermin to him. Idk, nonetheless, she's a very very interesting character and I really anticipate what she'd become as the story progresses.

Second, in "The Plunge", as from Jimin's pov he said "Jin is too nostalgic with the old dean to even see" which to me seemed that Jin wasn't as "devoted" to the mc as he claimed to be in "Princess" because he couldn't see/feel the stress from the mc from that meeting. Additionally, that scene/statement also meant to me that maybe the Woo family had meant something to him which again put holes in his claimed "devotion". With all these said, I think that it's only reasonable for the mc to lose a little bit of trust from Jin, and so my question for this is did she lose a little bit of that trust? Would Jin see that?

Next, Jungyoon. What happened to him and Mona after the dinner? Will Mona fire Jungyoon? (This maybe a spoiler so I understand if you can't answer this).

Next, did the men knew with the exception of jungkook and maybe jimin, what Jin did? (Like how Jin introduced mc to her abuser's father? How did they react? Or did they only know that Jin and the mc had an argument of some sort but wasn't actually aware of anything more than that?)

Next, when Jin fell on his knees for the mc just to apologize, will the other men do the same thing if they felt that they made a horrible mistake? Or do they have different reactions?

I forgot all the things I wanna ask so I'm just gonna comeback later lmaoooo. Thank you again for such a wonderful update.

Hi!! And thank you for the questions!! I shall answer what I can, but I really love these question so even if I can't answer some just know that💗

1. Mona is... an interesting person, and a lot of the guys have completely different perceptions of her at times which very much so depends on when/how they met her so I'm excited to delve more into everyone's relationship with her bc not even MC fully knows. I will say to the likes of Jin and Hoseok (but not limited to just them lmao) she's just some woman who took claimed them as her children rather than their mother esp bc she adopted them first and so was much less prepared... but I'll leave it at that for now

2. This is a great time for me to bring up that sometimes the guys are unreliable narrators, not often but when it comes to who they perceive as a threat to MC, they can assume the worst of everyone- including each other. So the reality was Jin was just looking at Mr. Woo while they were talking and is straight up not used to having to make sure other people are okay- trust me, he has learned that lesson now lmao, so Jimin was observing from a place of being fiercely protective and obsessed with MC. Therefore, I can confirm that Jin feels nothing but hatred for the Woo family now nor did he feel anything but contempt for them before. Jin is a dummy but he would never lie to MC. MC, despite being kind of naive, is no dummy and can clearly see when someone is more or less lying to her about their feelings, especially Jin. So though her trust in him did falter, that conversation kind of fixed that (deserved or not) since she, too, is love starved.

5. They all react differently depending on the level of fuck up but none of them are above getting on their knees to beg for forgiveness, but odds are I'll write something more detailed in the future!
