hi yes hello, im back on my bullshit and ready to talk more about mike’s one track mind, as a continuation of this post from last night :)

@magentamee made a really great point in the tags that i kinda want to explore further because i wasn’t thinking about it at all when i first made that post, so here we are :0

this is so interesting to me because his objective in season four SHOULD be to find el- but it’s not?

like, let’s recap the beginning of season 4:

he isn’t focused on finding el at the roller rink- rather, he seems like he’s hyper-aware of what’s going on with will.

he crumples up el’s letter.

he shows no clear interest in going to find el until jonathan suggests that they get a ride from argyle to escape the house and go find her.

the only time that he’s completely focused on el is when they’re fighting about the ILY and when she gets arrested- why isn’t that a continuous theme throughout season four?

later, in the van, his objective should still be to find el. and on the surface, it is! but the fact that he and will have so many heart-to-hearts that are INCREDIBLY coded conversations makes that objective rather iffy.

while those conversations appear to be about el, we know that they’re not, especially from will’s POV. in the junkyard? will isn’t talking about how it’s hard to say ILY, he’s talking about how it’s scary to come out. in the van with the painting? will isn’t talking about el’s feelings, he’s talking about his own.

the fact that mike is so captured by will’s own feelings disguised as understanding of mike and el’s feelings/relationship tells me that his objective ISN’T solely el- it’s will. if they wanted to show mike fully focused on el, on getting her back and on fixing their relationship, they wouldn’t have made these conversations the way they are- because they’re not about el, they’re about will.

so if we’re deeming mike’s season four objective to be will, then why does he respond to will like that in the beginning? why does the monologue happen?

number one: mike is disguising his own objective. it’s a shield, it’s repression, it’s mike pretending that el is his only focus when it’s now become clear that it’s really will. we see that shield start to crack when mike has his outburst at rink-o-mania, about will rolling his eyes and ruining their time together. and yet, mike still tries to keep it up- but it doesn’t work! we see these coded conversations and we’re able to recognize that really, el has nothing to do with it all. it’s all will.

number two: perhaps will isn’t the true objective, maybe he’s just the surface of the underground objective (yes, i know that wording sucks, but i can’t think of a better way to put it). will starts out there season getting ignored by mike, because he’s still stuck in the mindset of conformity. but underneath, he’s clearly struggling with something- something that’s making him want to push away both will and el.

in my mind, mike is trying to figure himself out. he’s struggling with his sexuality, he’s struggling with his feelings for will, he’s struggling with his lack of feelings for el. the reason he’s having so much difficulty focusing on both el and will is because that is his objective- the age old question of “why do i feel like this, is there something wrong with me?”

also, a disclaimer, because i feel like my words can easily be misinterpreted: mike still cares deeply about el! he still wants to find her very very badly, because el is in danger and he loves her! but el isn’t his focus (and neither is will!) and he doesn’t love her the way he thinks he should- so he pretends that she’s the focus and that they’re in love.

this post also doesn’t mean that i think he ONLY cares about one person or thing at a time- he cares so deeply about everyone in his life, and i think that’s part of why i love him. it just means that he tends to get tunnel vision on a specific goal.

tldr; mike’s objective this season isn’t the surface interpretation of el, or the slightly deeper interpretation of will. his objective is himself, and figuring out how that relates to will. and that’s why he’s pushing them both away, that’s what makes season four mike so different from season one through three mike- because for once, his objective isn’t a person. it’s not will like seasons one and two, and it’s not el like season three. season four presents mike’s objective as simply, ‘who is mike, and what does that mean?’

The bus chugged down the city streets as you sat closer to the back. You stared out the window and watched the grey sky of Nelson hanging overhead, a cloudy backdrop to the smoking city. 

You sighed every now and then, trying to forget the beeping and when it stopped. You still felt Andy’s hand on your back and the suffocating silence of the drive home. The burden of the dead woman on your shoulders.

It was as if it had been years since you saw the slightly crooked pole that held the bright sign. The bus stop was as desolate as ever, the dirty bench marked with spray paint and the shelter glass cracked. You set off around the corner past the house. Each was familiar but not comforting.

Your hips hurt from the stiff ride and you rubbed your stomach. You wore one of Andy’s hoodies under your open jacket, the zipper of the latter no longer meeting. You stopped in front of your parents’ house. You hadn’t asked permission; not from your mother, your father, or Andy. There was no courtesy phone call so you hesitated, afraid you might be sent away.

It was noon. Your father would be in the garage. He always had some project going. That was his work. He was cheaper than any other mechanic in the city, he just did it all from home. He could recycle parts from the junkyard and charge half price. They usually did better than the newer parts sent away for down at the Jiffy.

You walked up the driveway, the garage door was only halfway open, the bite of the late autumn, rather the early winter, mingled with the warmth flowing under the metal. You tapped on it with your knuckles, “dad?” you called.

You stepped back as his oily hands gripped the bottom and he hauled it up entirely. He tilted his head at you but couldn’t hide his smile. He looked at your stomach and you dropped your hand. He drew you to him before you could react. He hugged you tight and rocked you.

“Your mother’s gonna be mad you didn’t call before you came,” he let go of you and looked you over again.

“Mad that I’m even here,” you remarked.

“No, she might act like it but…” he waved you into the garage and rolled over the little stool he sat on when he was working. He helped you sit and put his wrench on the plywood table against the wall, “she missed you. We both did.” he wiped his hands on his jeans, “you could have called us. You know how she is. She feels before she thinks.”

“She kicked me out,” you felt precarious on the little rolling stool, “you let her.”

“So why’d you come back?” he asked.

You hung your head and hugged your stomach, “well, I’m having your granddaughter. I didn’t want you to find out from anyone but me.”

“It’s a girl?” he grinned.

“Sorry, wish I could give you a boy to get all filthy in this place,” you shrugged.

“You never minded getting your hands dirty,” he neared and grasped your shoulder.

“Yeah, guess it doesn’t matter too much, she’ll be as curious as any kid,” you said.

You were quiet as you looked around. Your dad’s rolling chest of tools was dented and rusted, the same one he’d had your whole life. The place hadn’t changed, only the car sitting in it.

“That’s not the only reason you’re here,” he said. Your father was a simple man but he wasn’t dumb.

You frowned and felt a prick in your eyes. The hormones, you told yourself, they were getting to you.

“I need you guys,” you said quietly, “is that so bad?”

“I missed you, you’re mom did too, she’s just stubborn. Think that’s where you get it,” he turned his hand over and held it out to you, “but she won’t turn you away.”

“You sure?”

“I won’t let her. Not this time,” he bent and took your hand, “now come on.”

You let him help you to your feet and he led you through the side door into the house. You heard your mother’s old Patsy Cline CD droning from the box speakers on the shelf as she muttered to herself. 

Your dad kicked the dirty off his boots and you slipped your own off. You followed him and peeked over his shoulder as he went to the living room. Your mother was wiping down the framed picture from your high school graduation.

“I got a surprise for you,” he announced as he stepped aside and beckoned you in alongside him, “and she’s got a surprise for you.”

Your mother turned and froze. Her lips formed a straight line and her eyes pierced you. She didn’t say anything as he stared at you then tossed the dusting cloth onto the table beside the lamp. She looked down at your feet.

“You remembered to take your shoes off,” she said.

Your lips parted and your chest gripped. She was still mad.

“You remembered us,” she swept over to you so quickly, you flinched. She hugged you and her middle met yours. She let go and looked down at your stomach. Her eyes were sad but not angry, “I’m…” she lifted her head and met your gaze, “I’m not good at saying it but I’m sorry.”

You watched her for a minute. She was still her mother as nasty as she’d been. You could see her regret and it coupled with your own. It didn’t fix everything but for her, it was a lot.

“I’m sorry too,” you breathed, “it was… me being stupid started all of this. I just didn’t know what to do.”

“You gotta tell her,” your dad intoned.

You glanced at him then back to your mom. You gulped, “we found out yesterday, it’s a girl.”

“We? And where is… he?” your mother bristled.

“Working,” you said.

“We went to the diner, they said you quit. The café too,” your mom batted away lashes, “please, sit.” She touched your stomach, “you’re so big.”

“Five months, I think,” you said as you let her take you to the old floral sofa, “and the doctor recommended I take it easy so I had to… leave.”

“Oh? Is something wrong with the baby?” she picked up her cloth again and resumed her dusting. Your father quietly excused himself.

“No, just me,” you leaned against the arm, “but they said my blood pressure is getting better, just have to check it now and again.”

“And that man? The least I can say is at least he’s taking responsibility, even if he is married,” your mom hung the picture back on the nail.

“It was a mistake,” you said, “but you know, I think it’s taught me a lot. Not that it was worth it.”

“I don’t mean to rag on you, but… it’s just not how it should be,” she went to the television stand and focused on the edges.

“You think I don’t know that. Mom, I didn’t come here to argue my morality. I came here…” you paused as you felt your phone buzz. You slid it from your jacket pocket and checked the ID; Andy. You ignored it and dropped it back inside, “I just wanted to see if you had any interest in your granddaughter.”

She spun back and her face wrinkled with sadness. She twisted the cloth and retreated to the rocking chair and sat. She chewed her lip and looked at the floor. When she looked at you again, her brows crinkled.

“I’m trying,” she said, “but what you did, I don’t know if I can’t get over that. That man, everyone knows him, and when it comes out, with his wife still in a coma, you don’t think about what that does to us.”

“Well,” your throat constricted and you held back the hot tears bubbling behind your eyes, “she’s not anymore.”

“What?”

“She… she passed last night,” you sniffed, “and I’ll admit that I came here as much for me as you. I just needed… needed to get away. Just for a little.”

Your phone went off again and you grunted as you pulled it out and swiped away the second call from Andy. You kept the phone in your hand and rested it against your thigh.

“I just need time,” your mom leaned back heavily.

“Well, it’s quickly running out,” you replied, “she’s gonna be here soon enough.”

“I know,” she said grimly, “I know.”

There was another silence and your phone twitched. You turned it over and checked the message on the screen; ‘why don’t you invite your parents for dinner if you’re not gonna answer me?’ You let the phone slip between your legs and slowly raised your eyes. How did he know?

“I can go, if it’s too much,” you said, “I didn’t expect to get past the front door, honestly.”

“It’s not-- you’re still my daughter,” she uttered, “and even if it’s not the best situation, you got my granddaughter too.”

Your phone began to shake between your legs and you huffed, “sorry,” you stood with effort as you snatched the phone up, “just a second.”

You went into the dining room and answered. You hissed into the phone, “what do you want, Andy?”

“Why didn’t you tell me you were going there?” he asked sharply.

“How do you even know? You following me?” you kept your voice low.

“I know, that’s all,” he retorted, “it is… surprising.”

“They’re my parents,” you scowled at the tabletop as you leaned on a chair.

“Mine, too, right? Considering--”

“Andy,” you warned, “come on. Let’s cut this out--”

“Invite them for dinner. You’re right. Our kid will need her grandparents,” he interrupted, “I’ll get off early and help.”

“I don’t think--”

“Invite them,” he demanded, “and don’t take the bus back. I’ll send you the money for a cab.”

“Jesus, I can take care of myself--”

“No, you can’t, which is why you’re sleeping under my roof. And this isn’t about you, it’s about the baby,” he exhaled and you heard a squeak of metal, likely a chair, “Now I want you home by two. I’ll be there shortly after.”

He hung up before you could argue. You closed your eyes and forced down the angry bile in your chest. You shuttered and tucked the phone back in your jacket. How did he know you were there?

Your parents agreed to dinner. Your mother wasn’t subtle that she was curious to see Andy’s house. Her judgement was always her driving motivation and you were certain she could find something to hate, even in the suburban utopia. 

You took the bus out of defiance and brewed with anger as you got off just outside the cul-de-sac. You walked the single block to Andy’s and paced like an angry lioness inside.

He arrived at three, just after. Your anxiety boiled with anger and you stopped to face him as he entered. You watched him put down his briefcase and hang his long black coat. Your nostrils flared as you braced yourself for the onslaught ready to spill forth.

“So, you weren’t following me?” you challenged.

“I was working,” he said quietly, “to pay for all of this…” he pointed to the ceiling, “and that,” he pointed to your bump.

“No, Andy, you don’t get to do that every time,” you snarled, “how did you know?”

He didn’t answer and brushed by you. You followed him into the kitchen as he went to the coffee machine and pressed the buttons bluntly. You watched him from a foot away, your hand on the cold marble.

“You can’t just ignore me. How did you know I was there?”

“Because…” he grabbed a mug and filled it with water. He poured it into the machine and snapped the lid shut, “because you have my baby and I have a right to make sure you don’t take it from me.”

“That’s not an answer,” you sneered, “Andy, I have done everything you’ve wanted. I have stayed here, I have quit my jobs, I have kept this baby for you, and you… you’re what? Tracking me like a dog?” You reached into your back pocket and slammed your phone on the counter. You slid it over to him, “when did you do it?”

His jaw ticked as he put a pod into the machine and hit start. He tapped his fingers on the counter and let out a long breath through his nose. He turned to you and crossed his arms.

“After you stayed out that night. I couldn’t worry like that again. I had to know,” he said staunchly, “because I’ve had a wife go out and not come back. A child--”

“I’m not your wife and I won’t ever be. This child is all we have in common,” you rebuffed, “even after last night. What you did, that doesn’t change things.”

You nearly tripped as he marched towards you. He had you against the far wall, his hand planted on either side of your head as his anger rippled across his forehead and set his jaw square. You pressed yourself against the pure white wall and tried not to wither.

“I did that for you,” he breathed, “I’ve done everything for you. Don’t act like you’re the only one doing shit.”

“Andy, get away--”

“No,” he punched the wall and you gasped, “my wife is gone. Jacob is gone! This is all I have; you, my daughter…that’s everything and I will be damned if I’m going to let you take any of it away from me.”

“You’re scaring me,” you wisped, “Andy, please--”

“No, you shut up and you listen. This is the last time we have this conversation. Your parents are coming and you’re going to be good. You’re going to wear something nice, you’re going to cook something good, and you’re going to smile. You don’t let them see you crack, not once.”

“You can’t--”

“Enough!” he hit the wall again and you heard it crumple under the force, “if you don’t, they won’t be around. Ever. Do you understand me?” you gaped up at him and trembled, you shook your head in disbelief. He leaned in and spoke softly to you, “Understand that I will make sure you and no one else ever sees them again.”

“You… wouldn’t…”

“I could. I will. You’re fucking bitch of a mom deserves it,” he hissed, “so, honey,” he growled the second word, “what’s it gonna be?”

Your lip quivered and you searched his face. The rage had his blue eyes alight and his breath rasped out like animalistic snarls. You thought of Laurie, of how blank he’d been when they stopped the machines. And that smile, after. What was that?

“I’ll… be good,” you murmured, “I will.”

His lips twitched and he shoved himself away from you. He stomped over to the fridge and took out the light cream. He added it to his mug of fresh coffee and stirred. You stood straight shakily and looked up at the hole beside your head.

“Well,” he said, “better figure out what you’re making for dinner. Our guests won’t be long.”

“We don’t have time for that.”

“I’m the commander, I’m your boss, and I say I’m hungry.”

Ramirez turned on his heel going toe to toe with the taller man, “I don’t give one shit if you’re hungry or not, something is wrong with you, so I am taking you back to Dr. Krill and Katie, so they can to a scan of your dumbass skull.” 

Commander Vir bared his teeth in a feral snarl held back only by Sunny, who had two of her arms wrapped around his chest. He was being absolutely impossible to control. First it had been other people, largely women, but with Ramirez in the crossfire once, and Sunny taking the brunt towards the tail end. Then it had been the aggression, the heightened need to fight absolutely everyone for the smallest infraction, and then had come the hunger, which he hadn’t shut up about for over a mile now.

Ramirez would have gotten them a taxi, but everything here tended to fly, which made Adam assume that it was his since he was “the best pilot in the known galaxy, so it should be me that flies everything.”

Yeah right, like he was going to let commander jackass fly the plane.

But deep down he was worried. Whatever this guy was, it wasn’t Adam.

Adam was….. Well how about the exact opposite of everything this person was doing, he was shy, and polite, and friendly, and humorous. Even when he got angry or indignant, his actions were usually justified for some sort of reason.

But whatever that thing in the alley had been, it had definitely done something to him.

He glanced down at his implant, and pulled up the tracking device that Krill had managed to weld to the commander’s ribs and found that it did indeed say that the commander was right behind him.

Up ahead they were just stepping onto the docking bay platform where ship shuttles were constantly rolling in from the sky above. Noctopolis didn’t have a station big enough for entire ships to land, so they were going to have to take a shuttle back to the ship. It would be best not to take their shuttle as the other marines would need a way to get back when they finally finished with their carousing, so he finally hailed another shuttle, which pulled to a stop in front of them.

“This piece of junk.” The commander snarled, “I’ve seen better shuttles in junkyards. Look at it, the D-4 coupling. Only some kind of bitch drives a shuttle with a -”

Sunny clamped her hand over the commander’s mouth and Ramirez sighed as the shuttle ramp opened and allowed them to step inside.

“To the station?” the pilot asked turning around in its seat to look at them.

“Yes please.” Ramirez said scanning his implant under the reader for payment.

As soon as that was done, he helped Sunny to strap the Commander into place getting a fat lip for his troubles when the man snuck in an angry knee to the face. Ramirez contemplated ‘accidentally’ closing the five point harness on the man’s junk in retaliation, but assumed it wise not to piss the man off more than he already was.

Sunny still had her hand over the Commander’s mouth, as the roar of the engines started up nearly deafening the.

Sunny yelped in shock and drew her hand back from Adam.

“He bit me!”

He barred his teeth at her, complained for a couple more minutes, though, luckily it wasn’t loudly enough for the pilot to hear. Eventually his messed up brain moved on to a quieter activity, pressed against Sunny head resting on her am.

Ramirez wasn’t stupid.

Had he guessed that Adam had a thing for sunny. Totally, who didn’t, but he doubted that Adam wanted anyone to find out like this. Ramirez honestly didn’t care about what he did in his free time, but he was worried about what would happen to his friend when he came down from whatever freaky psychotic behavior this was.

So, what did he do?

He decided to piss him off some more.

The commander could more easily come back from anger than he could from the humiliating of letting everyone know he was in love with an alien.

“Adam, Fuck you.”

It wasn’t his most eloquent diatribe he had ever given, but it worked pretty well.

Adam turned to look at him face twisted into an expression of murderous rage. Sunny was forced to hold him back as the cursing began and the struggling. Ramirez stayed very calm. He just had to keep him pissed like this until they made it to the infirmary.

They made it off the shuttle without incident, and walked through most of the station. Aside form the man hungrily eyeballing a couple of passing people, and a couple of passing food carts, they made it to the ship.

People came to approach them but Ramirez vigorously shook his head waving them off and out of the line of fire. Commander Vir glared them down as if he intended to fight each and every last one of them.

Sunny practically carried him up the corridor and through the ship towards their final destination.

Along the hallway up to the medical bay they ran into Conn, who took one look at Commander Vir and floated backwards a bit. Whatever was inside the man’s head, the starborn wasn’t to keen to be apart of.

Ramirez ignored that little fact and shouldered the next door open with gusto practically bursting into the medical bay with sunny close behind.

Dr. katie and Krill looked up from their work frowning in confusion as Sunny struggled to make the Commander do what she wanted.

Krill floated up.

“Is everything alright?”

Ramirez shook his head, “Something happened to the Commander. I think he was attacked?”

Both Dr. Krill and doctor Katie stepped forward in concern as Sunny forced him to sit down.

Krill moved forward, and so did doctor katie until eventually the man’s eyes fell on her. They all watched as his head tilted slowly moving up to her face after passing over her body. The look on his face was so uncharacteristic of him that Dr. katie and Krill took  a step back.

He licked his lips.

Dr. Katie’s eyes narrowed, and she walked over grabbing him aggressively by the face and turning his head this way and that. 

He mewled in pain.

“You are definitely right, something is completely wrong with him. Sunny pinned his hands down as he tried to fight Katie off.

“He got all weird like, started going after everyone, and then he tried to fight the, and then he got all hungry. And he's been aggressive and pissy ever since. I have never seen anyone behave like this ever, and I joined the army.”

“Yes the behavior is completely out of character. What did you say happened before he started acting like this.”

“I think someone may have used a device on him. It was dark, and I didn’t get a good look of the shadow, but I saw some metal, like there was a contraption on his head. Sunny continued to hold the commander down as doctor Katie looked over his head. She completely ignored whatever he was saying, though it did happen to be rather alarming coming from Adam.

“Here, on the scalp, what do you make of it Krill.”

Krill moved forward to take a look leaning in closely for an examination, “Hmmm, yes. Puncture wounds on the temples and under the eyes, very minuscule. Almost microscopic in fact.

Adam bit at Katie’s hand and she pulled back.

The look on her face was one of complete no nonsense as she stepped away grabbed something and then came back.

Adam looks almost shocked when she stabbed him in the back with the syringe.

“What did you give him.” Krill wondered 

The concoction was self-evident a moment later as the man lost all muscle tone. Sunny grabbed him and lay him back.

“Combined sedative and paralytic. That should keep him still she said.” Behind her glasses her warm eyes had changed to one of worry. She wasn’t mad at the commander knowing that something had been done to hi to make him behave in such a barbaric manner.

“Call in Dr. Adric will you. He might be able to help us explain at least some of this behavior.”

It wasn’t long before the man slipped into the room honey tones of his dark skin washed out by sharp overhead light. He walked forward and stopped with the other two doctors.

“Something is wrong with the commander.”

“Increased libido, hyper aggression, and hunger to the point of not being able to control himself. We had to sedate him.”

“Strange, sounds like you just gave me the textbook definition of the Id.”

“The what now?”

Dr Adric shrugged, “Oh nothing it was simply a theory proposed by a psychologist more than two thousand years ago. His methods have since been questioned and greatly disproven, but Freud did coin the idea of the Id, or the subconscious driving for of the human mind that encompasses all our base desires, food, sex, aggression, and so on.” he glanced down at the commander, “In this case, i might suggest something in causation with the function of the brain stem (including all base drives) and an inhibition of the frontal lobe and limbic system.”

“Why those in particular?” Krill wondered 

“The frontal lobe, as you know is in charge of executive decision. Whatever function has kept these drives and habits suppressed, is not working. With the limbic system down, he has no way of controlling his emotions which might explain the aggression, though I have never seen anything manifest in this way.”

“So you have seen it?”

“Alzheimer patients can experience similar behavior towards the end stages of the disease as their executive function and limbic systems break down, but he doesn't appear to be having any related memory involvement. I would suggest an x-ray fMRI and CT scan to begin.”

“Why the x-ray?” wondered Ramirez pretty sure that that could show you the skull and not the brain.

“Looking for metal of course.”

It was probably a good idea as the first x-ray image lit up like a lightbulb. Gathered around the screen, Sunny and Ramirez looking over their heads they saw the skull was packed full of shiny white dots. The skull was intact, and the dots were on the outside of his brain, but they were small, very small.

“Think you can get those out, Dr?” Katie asked turning to look at Krill.

“Yes, they are very small, a large magnet should do the trick.”

Dr Adric made a joke about putting him in an MRI to do the work quicker, and received a look form Krill while Katie laughed.

By the end of the hour all oft hem were staring at a minute grouping of microscopic electrodes that had been pulled from the man’s head.

“That would explain it.” Dr Adric muttered

“Explain what?”

“Generating a magnetic current through areas of the brain can disrupt its function. We’ve known that for thousands of years. Continuous stimulation of the occipital lobe, for example, can make someone go blind. So whoever did this intentionally shut off his executive functions, or stimulated his base drives. I believe what we just saw is the hardwired, natural human instincts.

“How very comforting”, Krill said, obviously not very comforted

“Well, lets wake him up and see if the problem resolved.

Nervously, the group gathered around the man who had been mostly sedated for the entire procedure. He wasn’t fully asleep, but he was only half conscious. The reversal agent woke him up pretty quickly, and he lifted his head sort of groggily.

He blinked owlishly at them, his face neutral.

They waited worried.

“What…. Happened?” He groaned hand to his head 

His single eye slowly focused in on Dr Katie, and then he blanched absolutely white. Eyes widening he put a hand over his mouth.

“Yep, that’s him.”

“Commander, are you ok? What do you remember.”

He grabbed Katie by the arm stammering, “Katie I… I’m so sorry I-I dont know what came over me. I’ve never done anything like that in my life I swear to god.” he looked near close to panic, “You know I would never intentionally ever do anything like that to you ever, and I am so sorry. I have no idea why that even happened.” 

She grabbed his hand, “Adam, it’s alright. I know you wouldn’t. It wasn’t your fault.”

He turned his head, and as he saw sunny and Ramirez his face went from bleach white to pale pink, to bright red.

Ramirez grinned and threw in a wink just for fun.

He thought the man was going to stroke out and die. He dropped his head into his hands. Even his hands were red.

“Do you remember what happened, commander?” Dr krill asked 

“I…. I don’t now I was waiting for Ramirez and sunny but then…. I saw something in the alley. Next thing I knew everything was dark, and I was being thrown around. It pinned me to the ground and did something…. That’s when ramirez and sunny came out. After that I remember….. I remember feeling, so angry and, and hungry and….” He went quiet as his neck blushed and even deeper shade of red, “I’m so sorry”, he moaned.

“Are you sure you don’t remember anything else, Commander.’

“Well I mean…. I’m not sure, but maybe...I thought it might have said, the Kree, but I wasn’t really paying attention.” 

“The Kree. Didn’t the GA make contact with a race that called themselves the Kree.”

Te commander lifted his head, “Yes, though it was only by long distance communication, otherwise no one knows anything about them.” 

“Well, rest, Commander, and we will figure this all out later.”

He nodded dejectedly as the doctors stepped from the room all the while discussing what the device could have been.

Ramirez followed after them having taken a step out the door when.

“Sunny, I am so sorry. What happened, I didn’t meant to do any of it.”

He paused beside the doorway knowing he should move on, but being unable to do so.

“None of it?”

There was silence.

“I…..”

“So I shouldn’t expect anything like that ever…. Even in an appropriate context?”

Stammering 

He really should go

“It’s fine, Adam, but that is something I just needed to know.”

“But I didn’t say that, Sunny I…. I just.”

“You just…. What?”

“Eventually yes of course…. And I want to…. But I….”

Ramirez shook himself and pulled away. He shouldn’t be listening in. It was wrong despite how much he wanted to shove it in maverick’s face and claim his two hundred bucks.

He wasn’t going to rat out his friend to everyone.

He knew what being a friend meant, and often that included keeping secrets.

The Good Old Days Chapter Eleven:  A Little Girl and a Bad Night

A/N:  Hi, friends!  Ok.  I wasn’t thinking this was going to be one of those things I’d really have to do for this story, but this chapter is going to require a warning label.

ICYMI:  Chapter Ten:  My Brother Sold Me Out

Hell of an idea you had, Frankie.  Start at the loud ass club.  I know the Old Man told me to have a good time while I was doing collection runs for him, but I never was the type for electronica.  It’s just not my thing.  Music should be made with actual instruments, not computers, but I guess that’s just me.  That being said, I still had a job to do.  Now, if I were the manager, where would I be hiding on collection day? Should I even be looking for the manager?  Why not go straight for the owner?  I went up to the bar, hoping someone would know something.

 “Hi,” a cute little thing from behind the bar slid down to me, “Can I get you anything?”

 “Maybe you can,” I pulled up a barstool, “Do you know if the owner is here tonight?”

 “He’s in his office,” she told me, “Are you looking for him?”

 “I’d love to see him,” I nodded, “Tell him the Old Man is looking for him.  He’ll know.”

 “Ok.” She was sweet.  I liked her.  Granted, she was no Vanessa, but she was sweet.  I wonder if she knows he’s about to give me money to pay off a mob boss. Probably not.  And it’s probably for the best we keep her out of that.

 “Thank you, honey,” I gave her a little smile when she came back with the owner following her, “Can I get a mojito please?”

 “Sure!” I may not be a big fan of electronica, but I can promise my bartender friend is getting a nice tip before I leave.

 “So,” the owner sat down next to me.  In that moment, a choice flashed in my head. Either I could flex my new found power and push this guy’s buttons or I could let him go, “You’re the Old Man’s new bag man?”

 I wanted to.  Oh, I wanted to.  I wanted to show off having the big dick in the locker room.  I’ve dealt with assholes like this one before.  Arrogance oozed out of this guy.  But I heard Mama’s voice in my head.  I didn’t always have good nights coming home from the restaurant.  I know. Hard to believe.  But it was true.  Be the bigger man, Francisco.  Be the bigger man.  Our day will come, but just because they push us down to build themselves up doesn’t mean we need to stoop that low.  But a part of me still wanted to be petty.  No, Francisco.  Take the high road.  Si, Mama.

 “That’s me,” I confirmed, “And he’s calling your dues.”

 “I figured he would,” the owner handed me a nice, thick envelope, “Here.  This should be enough.”

 “Excuse me.” The Old Man always told me to never count the money in front of them.  Trust is the foundation of every transaction.  But I knew if I came back too short, the Old Man would have my ass. By the looks of it, everything was there.  I took a good drink from my mojito.  Damn, she knew what she was doing, “Alright, man.  We’re good here.  Thank you.”

 “Send the Old Man my best.”

 “Get the fuck off me, asshole!” a shrill voice barked out of a slight scuffle near the dance floor, “I said no!”

 “Oh, boy,” the owner winced, “That can’t be good.”

 “I could go bounce that for you,” I offered. Something in that voice sounded familiar.  I don’t like the knot it put in my stomach.  

 “Could you?” he asked, “I’d hate to put you out like that.”

 “It’s no trouble,” I brushed him off, finishing off my drink, “No worries.”

 “Thank you…”

 I got up from my barstool and headed over to the dance floor.  Oh, that didn’t look healthy.  And something tells me he didn’t know how young she was.  I wouldn’t exactly call her a baby, but I wouldn’t exactly call her an adult either. Still, scrappy or not, she didn’t need to be in this mess.  So, how to tackle it with the littlest amount of bloodshed.  I mean, if I have to fight this prick, I’ll fight him, but I’d rather not deal with that tonight.  I got better shit to do.

 “Come on, sweetheart,” the cuddly asshole awed, “All I asked was for you to dance for me like that.”

 “I told you no!” she snarled, ready to jump for his throat like a junkyard dog.

 “What seems to be the problem here?” I had an angle. If all else failed, I had a plan B. But I could feel it.  My blood started boiling.  I know Vanessa wasn’t quite mine yet, but this felt like she might as well have been.  And I’ll be damned if I let this happen.

 “Not your business, dude,” Cuddly Asshole brushed me off, trying to get closer to her.  Oh, no, no, no…

 “Actually,” I explained, “It is my business. Because I’m pretty sure she said no. And that should’ve been the end of it, but here you are, dragging it out.”

 “What?” he scoffed, “Are you her pimp or something?”

 “No…” I’m not going to prison tonight.  I’m not going down for murder.  Not tonight.  Maybe tomorrow, depending on what the Old Man’s got for me.  Please don’t get pissed at me for this, but roll with it, “This is my little sister.  She’s only seventeen and in here on a fake ID and it’s time for her to go home.  Come on, Veronica.  It’s time to go home.”

“Boo,” Veronica groaned, “You’re no fun.”

 “Come on, Veronica,” I took her by the arm and started heading outside.  But before we go, “And if I see you near her again, we will have a problem.  Do you understand?”

 “Please…” Asshole rolled his eyes at me, “What could you possibly do?”

 I really didn’t want this to end with violence, but sometimes, a little is necessary.  I threw a strong punch into the son of a bitch’s jaw and watched him fall to the floor, “Leave her alone.  Come on, Veronica.  It’s time for us to go home.”

 “Ok…” Veronica pouted on our way out, but I could see it in her eyes.  That shit was a front.  And it only became clear when we got outside.  She threw herself into my chest and damn near started bawling right then and there, “Thank you, Frankie.  That guy’s been on me all night, trying to get me to grind on his dick.  He wouldn’t leave me alone.”

 “You’re welcome,” I held her tight, “I wasn’t going to leave you like that, Veronica.  Promise.  Are you ok?”

 “I feel gross,” she admitted, “But I think I’m ok. I mean, I could be a little drunk, but other than that…I just wanted to go out and dance tonight.”

 “I know you did,” I kept an arm around her as the two of us headed down the block.  I still had rounds to make, “I hate assholes like that.”

 “Try having them air hump you from the back,” Veronica shuddered, “And then laugh about it to their idiot buddies.”

 “Eww…”

 “What made you tell him I was seventeen?” she wondered, leaning into me.  Something tells me Veronica’s drunker than she thinks she is.

 “I figured you were seventeen,” I shrugged, “I took a shot in the dark.  You look older, but you act younger.”

 “I’m eighteen, thank you,” Veronica told me, “Sometimes, I need to act older.  But that’s when I’m around my mother and her carbon copy.”

 “What?” I wasn’t following.

 “Our sister Violet,” she reminded me, “She’s exactly like our mother.  I’m sure a psychiatrist would love to tear that one apart, but I’m not digging into that today.  But God forbid we’re not her perfect daughters in mixed company or listen to her every fucking order down to the letter.  It’s hell, Frankie.  It’s pure hell.”

 “So I’ve heard.” Veronica talked about her mother the same way Vanessa would if Vanessa had less of a filter.  Vanessa had too much of a diplomatic heart for that, “I’m guessing you don’t want to go home quite yet, do you?”

 “I could stay out a little longer,” she smiled, “Why?  What did you have in mind?”

 “I’m thinking we go somewhere to get you sobered up,” I decided, “I need to do a few more things for work related purposes and there’s this restaurant I need to stop by.  Sound good to you?”

 “I’m really not that drunk, Frankie,” Veronica grumbled, still tripping over her own two feet.  Yeah.  She’s not that drunk, “But I’m not going to say no.”

 I knew this place the Old Man was sending me to. A little Italian place on the outskirts of Brooklyn.  I’ve only been here a couple times when my brothers and I decided to treat Mama to a nice night.  It had a warm, cozy atmosphere.  We couldn’t say no to that.  I never would’ve thought it was under the Old Man’s thumb, though.  And now that I’m…not quite under the Old Man’s thumb, but maybe more his index finger, I’m sure the owner of this place is going to get to know me very well.  

 I sat Veronica’s stumbly ass in a booth, “Stay here.  I’ll be right back.  Before we get anything, I need to take care of something first, ok?”

 “Ok,” Veronica held her head up on her elbow, barely holding herself together.  Yeah. You’re not that drunk.  I’m sure you’re not.

 I walked back to the owner’s office and caught the guy off guard, “Who the hell are you?”

 “I’m here for the Old Man,” I told him, “He’s looking for dues.”

 “Alright,” the owner reached for the cashbox under his desk, “I’m good for it this month.  We don’t need any problems.”

 “Good…” Oh, I’m not sure how to feel about the whole fear thing.  I didn’t think the Old Man’s power was derived from fear.  I thought it was more of a respect thing.  But I still had to get his money.  I was just the go-between.

 “Here,” the owner’s hands were shaky.  Wow, man, have a spine, “It’s all there.  I promise!”

 “It’s fine,” I settled him, “I believe you.  I don’t know who you’ve dealt with in the past, but you act like I’m going to start severing toes.”

 “Tell the Old Man I say thank you…”

 “Got it.” Holy shit, dude.  Who the hell did the Old Man have doing collections before me? And how big of an executioner was he? I shook it off and went back to find Veronica sipping on a glass of lemonade, “Alright, Veronica.  Anything you want.  I’m buying.  We just need to get some carbs in you.”

 “I don’t know about that, Frankie,” Veronica’s swaying got worse, “I don’t feel so good…”

 “Because whether you want to admit it or not,” I pointed out, “You’re drunk.  You need to…”

 “That’s the thing, though,” she cut me off, “I’ve hardly drank tonight.  I don’t think I even made it through my first drink.  Their rum tasted weird, so I stopped.”

 I had a mojito there.  It tasted fine.  Maybe she’s just a lightweight, “Have you eaten today?”

 “Yeah…” Then, out of nowhere, Veronica started shaking…And shaking bad, “Frankie, I’m scared…What happened…?  I can’t sit still.  Why can’t I sit still?  And…I’m dizzy…So…Dizzy…And I could…definitely pass out…Yeah…I’ll pass out now…”

 “Veronica?” I sat on her side of the booth, trying to shake her awake, “Veronica?”

 Oh, shit…This isn’t good.  I put my fingers up to her neck, hoping to God I felt a pulse. I don’t want to have to explain to Vanessa her sister might be dead.  Come on, Veronica.  Still be there.  Please…Then, I felt a little twitch under my fingertips.  Ok…Good.  She’s still alive.  She’s still breathing.  She’s just out cold.  That’s not exactly a good thing either, but it’s like Veronica said.  She barely drank tonight.  Which made me think one thing.  I wonder if that prick from the club thought Veronica would dance on him because he slipped her a little something, something.  It’s a good thing I got her out of there before he slipped her another little something, something.  

 Which led me to the little pickle I was in.  I couldn’t just leave Veronica here passed out in a booth.  Not unattended anyway.  I made sure to keep her head up a bit, “Veronica…?  You still in there?”

 Nothing.  Yep. This girl was out cold.  And that piece of shit drugged her.  By the way she was shaking, it wouldn’t surprise me if he fucking roofied her.  I’m so sorry, Veronica…I know we’ve only met each other once, but you’re a good kid. You don’t deserve this.  I flagged down a waiter and sure enough, one came running, “Can I help you, sir?”

 “I need a favor,” I took a hundred dollar bill out of the envelope from the club and put it in this guy’s hand, “My sister has had a very hard night and I need to go make a phone call.  Can you keep an eye on her for me please?  Just make sure she’s ok.”

 “Sure,” the guy sat in the booth.

 “Thank you so much,” I gave him a grateful nod, “Where are your payphones?”

 “In the back by the bathrooms.”

 “Thank you.” I headed toward the bathrooms and dug Vanessa’s number out of my pocket.  I just hoped to all things holy, unholy, and purgatorial that I wouldn’t have to speak with anyone else.  

 …Come on, Vanessa.  Pick up.

 “Hello?” Oh, thank God…

 “Hi, Vanessa,” I gnawed on the inside of my cheek. This was a phone call I didn’t want to give her, but it could be a hell of a lot worse.

 “Frankie!” she chimed, “It’s about time you call me. I thought you were blowing me off.”

 “Yeah,” I looked over at a clock.  Shit…It was damn near ten o’clock.  I didn’t want to stand her up, but I’m sure she’ll understand, “I’m so sorry about that.  It’s just…I’d hold off on that excitement if I were you.”

 “What do you mean?” Vanessa worried, “Is everything ok?”

 “Do you know where the Front Porch is?” I asked, twisting my finger around the cord.

 “Yeah,” her excitement definitely started dwindling, “Frankie, what’s going on?”

 “I want you to meet me there,” I stayed blunt with her.

 “Oh!” Vanessa relaxed, “I didn’t expect you to be asking me out so soon, but ok.  I’ll be there.”

 “I wouldn’t say I’m asking you out again,” I came clean with her, “I wish this were on much better terms, but…I got Veronica with me.”

 “Oh, God,” she groaned, “What did she get into now?”

 “It’s not what she got into,” I braced myself, “It’s what someone got into her.  She’s currently passed out in a booth.  Some guy tried getting with her tonight and might have roofied her.  I’m not totally sure, but it’s looking like it.  I stopped it before anything could really progress.”

 “I’ll be there soon,” I could hear it in her voice. Vanessa was doing her best to keep up a brave face for the sake of her sister.  I couldn’t blame her, though.  If something happened to César or Tony, I’d be dying inside, too.  They may do some stupid shit from time to time, but they’re still my brothers, “Keep an eye on her please.”

 “I will,” I promised, “See you soon.”

 Click.

 Fuck…I really didn’t want to have to give her that phone call, but like I said.  It was better than telling her there was nothing left the doctors could do. Hopefully, this will be out of her system soon and everything will be fine.  I walked back to our table and shooed the waiter away, “Thanks, man.”

 “Is there anything I can get you?” he offered.

 “I’m fine,” I told him, pulling Veronica into my lap, “Really.  Thank you.”

 “And…” he shot a glance down at her, “Is she going to be ok?”

 “She should be,” I ran my hand through her hair. Poor thing.  You really didn’t deserve this tonight, Veronica.  Or any other night for that matter.  It’s not your fault, though.  How were you supposed to know some dick was going to spike your drink?  But you’ll be alright.  

 “Excuse me, ma’am,” the hostess at the door chimed, “I’m sorry, but we’re closing soon.  We’re not taking anymore…”

 “I’m supposed to be meeting someone here…” I knew that voice anywhere.  And it’s really a shame I had to hear it under these circumstances.

 “Vanessa,” I waved her over, “She’s with me.”

 “How is she?” Vanessa walked over to our table where Veronica had her head in my lap.

 “She’s breathing,” I reported, “But before she passed out, she said she got really dizzy.  Then, she couldn’t stop shaking and that’s when she passed out.  And she’s been like this ever since.  Once she passed out, I called you.”

 “Thank you,” Vanessa nudged me out of the booth and took her sister, “Veronica…Can you hear me, honey?”

 For a brief moment, Veronica’s eyes opened. She could hardly talk, but dammit, she tried, “Ness…”

 “Shh….” Vanessa cradled her, “Let’s go home, ok?”

 “Ok,” Veronica was lucky to hold her head up, let alone walk.  I scooped her up into my arms and brought her to the limo out front.  Damn, Vanessa.  And I thought the Old Man traveled in style.  Still, I could get excited some other time.  For now, we had more important things to worry about.  I put Veronica gently in the backseat and she fell right back to sleep.  

 “Hey, Frankie…” Vanessa hardly spoke above a whisper, “Will you come with us?”

 “With you where?” I wondered.

 “Back to our house,” Vanessa begged, “Please?”

 “I…” I bit my lip.  Just what I needed was to be accused of being the one to drug Veronica in the first place.  I didn’t want to run that risk, “I really shouldn’t…”

 “It’s totally fine,” Vanessa assured me, “My parents aren’t home.  It’s ok. I’m going to need help getting Veronica back in the house and I don’t want to have to wake up any of the house staff.”

 “Ok,” I wasn’t going to argue with her.  I know I still had shit to do for the Old Man tonight, but some things take precedence.  So, I slid in next to Vanessa and somehow, my Williamsburg gutter ass ended up in Manhattan.  And not the casual Manhattan.  Upscale Manhattan.  The Upper East Side where a guy wasn’t allowed to breathe the cab exhaust for less than ten grand.  I knew Vanessa came from money, but damn…I also know both Vanessa and Veronica were human at the end of the day.  Bigger fish.

 The limo pulled up to this beautiful, massive house overlooking the water.  Why am I not surprised?  So, this is how the other half lives.  As long as Veronica got inside and into bed and wakes up tomorrow morning, that’s all that matters.  Vanessa brought me upstairs and into Veronica’s bedroom with Veronica riding in my arms. Her bedroom was the size of our whole apartment, but it looked more like an artist’s loft than a bedroom in a multimillion-dollar house like this.  Damn, this was nice.  Regardless, I put Vanessa into her bed and pulled her blanket over her shoulders. Sleep well, kid.  I’m sorry we had to meet like this tonight.  

 “Hey, Vanessa,” I asked, making sure to keep my voice down.  We don’t need to wake the baby, “Can I ask you a question?”

 “Sure,” Vanessa and I took a seat on the stairs, “What is it?”

 “Has…” I treaded lightly, my fingers between hers, “Has this ever happened before?”

 “A couple of times…” I could see it in her eyes. Vanessa was barely holding herself together.  A couple tears rolled down her face, “I told her not to go out by herself.  I told her to stay in tonight, Frankie.  But what does she do?  Of course we’re not going to listen to Vanessa.  What does she know?  It’s not like anyone else in this house looks out for Veronica the way Vanessa does.  Why take her advice?”

 “Hey…” I pulled Vanessa into my shoulder and let her cry, “You didn’t know some asshole was going to spike her drink. Don’t beat yourself up over this.”

 “Thank you for taking care of her tonight, Frankie,” Vanessa cuddled into me, “You really didn’t have to do this.”

 “But I did anyway,” I ran my fingers down the back of her arm, doing my best to offer whatever comfort I could, “I wasn’t going to blow her off, Vanessa.  That would’ve been a dick move.  And when I saw her tonight…I mean, the two of you are damn near identical.  Seeing her that pissed and that uncomfortable…I don’t know what I would’ve done if that were you instead.”

 “Bloodshed?” she assumed.

 “Maybe,” I shrugged, “Depends on how liquored up I had gotten beforehand.”

 “I’m worried about her…”

 “I’d be concerned if you weren’t,” I pulled her a little closer, “Can I tell you a little story?  Something to take your mind off things?”

 “What the hell?” Vanessa allowed, letting out a little yawn, “Go ahead.”

 “One time,” I remembered, “My brother Tony had a bitch of a headache. So, logically, he took something for it. He took something from one of the guys that worked in the kitchen.  But what he didn’t know was he accidentally roofied himself.  It made for an interesting night when we got home.”

 “What happened?”

 “We got home,” I went on, “He started getting dizzy and he passed out in bed.  Just like Veronica did.  When she wakes up tomorrow morning, her memory’s going to be fuzzy.  Keep some water on her nightstand and tell her everything that happened.  She’ll be ok.”

 “I know I’ve said it to death tonight…” Vanessa leaned over to me, gently kissing my cheek, “But thank you, Frankie. Really…I’m glad I got a phone call from you saying she passed out instead of one from Vanessa tomorrow morning, saying how much she fucked up.”

 “Let’s hope this doesn’t happen again,” I got up from the stairs, “I’d love to hang around a little longer, but I need to get going.  I’m still on the clock.”

 “Sorry,” she let me go, “I…I didn’t…”

 “No, no, no,” I shook her off, “It’s alright. I’m sure my boss would understand. I’ll call you tomorrow and check on her, ok?”

 “Ok,” Vanessa followed me outside, “You want to borrow the limo back to town?”

 “I’ll be fine,” I promised, “I got it.”

 “Are you sure?” she worried, “It’s at least an hour back to Williamsburg.”

 “Vanessa,” I took her hands, “I promise.  I’ll be fine.  I’ll call you tomorrow.  Go take care of your sister.”

“Ok…”

 I don’t want to say I scored major points with Vanessa tonight, but I’m pretty sure I scored major points with Vanessa tonight.  Saving her sister from some prick in the club would probably score me points tonight. And she had a point.  If that asshole would’ve been all over her like he was with Veronica, there would’ve definitely been bloodshed.  Hell, even when I hopped on the subway, all I could think about was what he did.  How scared Veronica was when it finally hit her system…If that would’ve been Vanessa, someone wouldn’t be walking straight anymore.

 Once I got back to Brooklyn, I couldn’t help myself. I stood outside that club, wondering if that dick was still there.  It wouldn’t surprise me if he was.  I know I promised Vanessa I’d call her tonight, but I needed to call the Old Man.  I’m sure he’s worried about where the hell I’ve been.  I doubt he’d call me taking care of Veronica having a good time while I’m on my collection runs.  Payphone…Payphone…If I were a payphone around here, where would I be…?  Alley.  That’s right.

 “Yeah?”

 “Hey, Old Man,” I answered, “It’s Frankie. Look, I might be a little late coming back.”

 “Is everything ok?” he worried.

 “No,” I was blunt.  How else was I supposed to answer that?  Was I supposed to lie to him and tell him everything was fine? Fine would’ve been me collecting and calling it a night.  Fine isn’t me collecting Veronica after she got drugged.  Fine isn’t having Vanessa crying in my shoulder.  Fine isn’t what’s about to happen.  And I just happened to catch a glimpse of the guy on his way out. Oh, your ass is mine, mother fucker, “I have some unfinished business I need to handle.”

 “What’s going on?” the Old Man asked, “What kind of unfinished business?”

 “There’s this piece of shit coming out of the club you sent me to,” I explained, doing my best to keep a level head.  For now, “He slipped something in Vanessa’s little sister’s drink and tried getting her to grind on him.  I can’t let him get away with that.”

 “Frankie, listen to me very carefully,” he turned very serious very quickly, “I don’t want you to lay a hand on him.”

 “What?” my heart sunk, “Old Man, no.  I can’t…”

 “Frankie…” the Old Man cut me off, “I told you to listen, did I not?”

 “Sorry,” I kept my mouth shut, “But I can’t…”

 “I never said we were going to let him get away with it…” I knew the Old Man was on my side, “Does the guy know who you are?”

 “I told him she was my sister.”

 “Alright…We can work with that,” the Old Man thought for a moment or two, “I want you to go up to him and become his best friend. Tell him you want to bury the hatchet. Once you do that, I want you to mention somewhere on the south side where the booze is cold, the girls are gorgeous…Really paint him a picture.  Bring him back here and we’ll take care of it, ok?”

 “Ok,” a wave of relief came over me, “I shouldn’t be much longer.  This guy’s pretty wasted.  I got him.”

 “Good boy,” he praised, “See you soon.”

 “See you soon.”

 “And I mean it, Frankie!  Not a finger on him until you get him back here.”

 “Got it, boss.”

A New Dawn Part 8

That afternoon, after Motor left for his home, as we returned to the hotel, I stole some more machines to use in my alien shield machine. When we got back to the hotel room, I pulled out the few machines I got and started disassembling them to put the parts I needed into the alien shield machine.

Rat sat down right next to me and leaned close so that her face was a few inches from mine. I still didn’t look up from my machines. She stared at me. “I been thinking…”

“Dangerous,” I muttered.

She smirked. “You’ve been getting sticky fingers. Getting your hands on little trinkets here and there. You’ve got a couple better options for parts. One, we ask Eli’s bro, and he dumps a junkyard on our heads, but that might take time. Two, we go garbage-diving, which my dignity cannot stand right now. Dunno about yours. Three, we go splitting. For those in the crowd new to Tersatellan crime, that means we steal from some residencies.”

Splitting was a cool name for stealing. Residencies on the other hand… “Why don’t you just call them ‘houses’?”

Rat brushed it off. “There’s a difference. I forget what it is. Probably resis are more Plexus-controlled.” Eh. They were still houses. “We are very sensitive about it. Don’t question it. Doesn’t matter. All you need to know is, they’ve got shiny things inside of them that might help with your extracurricular activities here.”

I almost told her what I was working on, but I stopped myself. If she knew I was working on a machine that could protect me from the aliens’ emotion meddling, she might assume that I was planning on going off on my own to find them (which wasn’t the case yet), so she wouldn’t help me. And anyway, it would be nice to steal with someone else again. A smile pulled at my lips. I tinkered with the new machine a little longer, but there wasn’t more that I could do, so I stood up and wiped the grease off on my pants. “What kind of stealing?”

“Maybe some beacons, some junctioners—high-tech stuff. And some blenders or sun lamps if we find anything good. One little four-room nearby I got my eye on. Won’t take long. I got a plan.”

The last time she had an idea, she took me to that party, and I still didn’t understand why that was supposed to be fun. But still, stealing with her should be a lot more fun. “You have a plan. I like the sound of this already.”

Rat grinned and ran off. “Eli! Would it be okay if we dropped you off at the Academy and look around or sign up or whatever you wanna do? It’s girl time—Kai and I are going shopping.”

“I’ll stay behind and sleep, or guard our room.”

I frowned and walked over to where they were talking. It wasn’t fair that Eli wasn’t coming with us. “You’re not coming?”

He ran a hand through his hair and shook his head. “I’m, ah, not much for the thieving scene myself.”

Rat laughed. “He’s got the moves for it, but he’s too moral.”

I stayed quiet as Rat brought me down to the car and drove off. I had to keep a mental checklist of what I still needed and how it would need to be put together now that I didn’t have my machine to tell me all of it. I should be able to remember what I needed, but I wanted to make sure.

Rat glanced over at me. “He’s also gonna establish an alibi for us. Not that I plan on being so sloppy as to get accused of anything. Now, how’s your search engine?”

“My what?”

“Y’know. That thing in your head, helps you look for electrical stuff.”

I looked around and frowned. Still no machines. “Still inoperative.”

“Lovely. You’ll have to do this the old-fashioned way, then. Sorry. At least there’s not much more my own Reaching can do to you.” She glanced over at me again. “That’s what I call it—my curse thing where I can ID and X-out stuff.”

“Have you…always been able to—” Crap. I shouldn’t be pushing her to talk about something she probably didn’t want to talk about. “I’m sorry if you don’t want to talk about it.”

“It’s fine. The control thing is new. Like, I’ve only been able to do it on purpose for maybe a couple weeks. Or not do it. But, I mean, as far as I can remember, it’s just…happened.” She shook her head with a smile. “Having it under wraps’s gonna help us. Don’t worry about me. Under control. The swoop we’re gonna pull’s called glace noir—I name all my heist plans after drinks. This one’s where we cut a resi’s power and then rob it while everyone’s gone.”

I frowned. How tight was security in these houses? “Why do you have to cut the power if they’ll be gone? Are there defenses?”

“They’re inside to begin with, but—look around while your vision’s clear.” I looked around, but it was all the same houses spaced evenly apart. “We’re in a neighborhood now, see? Low residencies. No windows. Cut the power, and it goes pitch black in there, except sometimes a safety light to guide you to an exit. Plus they’re shut pretty tight, so if you’re not letting in air somehow…they’re not safe without power. It’ll give us a 10-15 minute window to sneak in and have our run of the place before operatives show up to fix the problem. Capiche?”

Ten to fifteen minutes would be plenty of time. “I think so.” I bounced my leg as I stared out the window. This was going to be good. Rat went over a few more details as she parked.

I followed Rat’s lead as we snuck through the dark to get to the house Rat wanted to steal from. When we reached the house, Rat cracked open the door, and I frowned. “It’s not even locked?”

She smiled back at me. “Most residencies aren’t. Welcome to Tersatellus. They trust each other too much here.”

Well, that would be easier back on my planet. I didn’t have time to think too much about that because the lights went off in the house. Someone screamed inside, and Rat pulled me into a shed. When nothing happened, Rat snuck out, and I waited.

“No one really cares about you. You’re just a burden to them.”

I hissed out a breath at the whisper. And I glanced behind me, but of course no one was there. Was I just imagining the voices now?

Rat came back and gestured me forward, and I pushed away the thoughts. Right. I had to focus on stealing. She led me into the house, and I grinned as I panned my flashlight over all the useful stuff. Rat laughed. “We’re in. Alright. These things aren’t entirely soundproof, as you heard, so we can talk, but keep your voice down. From the light around the corner, it looks like they didn’t shut the door, so avoid the living room. Meet me back here in ten minutes, or when you hear someone at the front door. Go.”

I rushed for the kitchen and grabbed what I knew I needed, and then I moved on to the rooms. These guys had so much tech. Why did they need so much? Surely, they wouldn’t miss it.

“You’re weak and pathetic. You can’t do anything on your own. And you won’t be able to protect your friends from us.”

I growled and snatched a necklace. I…I wasn’t useless. I had survived on my own for years. And anyway, I had to focus. I only had a few more minutes. I grabbed one more machine and snuck back to the kitchen.

At least I was there first. When Rat walked in, I forced a grin and pulled out all the stuff I had grabbed. She grinned back. “You made really great work of a quick job, lady. Real—”

Voices. People were coming through the back door. I automatically run for the front door, and Rat is right in front of me. I push all the tech into my pockets as Rat peaked outside. “One guy by the street with his back turned.” She paused. “Follow my lead quick and quiet.”

I nodded, and Rat dashed out of the door. I followed her up onto a box and up to the roof. She smiled over at me, and I smiled back. See, stupid whispers in my head? Rat cares.

She beckoned for me to go to the middle of the roof, and we stayed away from the edges. “All we gotta do is wait til they clear the back area—then we run that way a bit, get lost in the crowd and walk very casually back to the car.”

I eyed her. “If we get caught, we’re no longer friends.”

Rat suppressed a snort. “I shall weep for a thousand and one nights. You know, escaping jail together is also a great bonding experience.”

I opened my mouth to say something, but someone cried out. Rat snuck up to the edge of the roof, and she whispered back at me. “They went inside. We’re loose!” Rat jumped off the roof, and I followed, but I hissed out a breath. How could she do that without wincing? Rat grabbed my hand before I could fully recover, and she dragged me to the car. She jumped into the driver’s seat, and once I was secure, she drove out of the neighborhood, flashing a conspiratorial smile my way. I smiled back, but now that the need to focus was gone, the thoughts returned. Crap. I just tried to keep pushing them away while Rat drove back.

That night, while Rat and Eli were asleep, I held a dim flashlight in my mouth as I worked on the alien shield machine. I wouldn’t be able to make it as quickly as I would have with my machine working, so I had to use all the time I had to finish it. I’d rather it be done before we left Joanndu so it would be ready for whatever came with the next city we headed for.

 I woke up with the machine on the bed in front of me and the flashlight on the floor still on. Rat was standing over me, frowning. I blinked a few times and sat up.

She huffed. “You stayed up all night working on that machine?”

“Clearly not,” I mumbled. “Or I would still be awake.”

Eli laughed from the next room, and Rat rolled her eyes. “Well, I have some parties we’re going to go to today, but you can work on it until then. There’s not one I want to go to for a few hours, so you can get going.” She walked to the other room where Eli was, and I grabbed the flashlight, turned it off, and put it on the table next to my bed. I got started disassembling some more of the stolen machines as they started talking in the other room.

“I’ve got some stuff to do, so would you be okay hanging out with Kai while I’m gone?” Eli must have nodded because Rat spoke again. “Thanks. It’s nothing to be worried about. I’ll be fine.”

They talked more quietly, enough that I couldn’t tell what they were saying anymore. But that was interesting. Rat also had things she would rather do alone.

Rat left shortly after her conversation with Eli, and when he was done getting ready, he sat on the bed next to mine and stared at me as I kept disassembling the machines. I couldn’t work as fast as I normally could, and that was annoying.

Eli leaned forward. “So, what are you working on?”

I hesitated. Would it be okay to tell him? Would he want to stop me because I was working on a machine to help against the aliens? But he just seemed curious, and he was nice. Hopefully, he wouldn’t stop me. “You remember how Tila had some kind of perimeter around her that caused anyone in it to lose their emotions and just feel calm?” He nodded. “Well, I came up with a machine that can combat it. It won’t be able to completely negate the effects of the emotion stealing, but it will help a lot.”

Eli grinned. “That’s amazing! But…how will you be able to make it now that you don’t have that machine working?”

“I planned it out before it stopped working, so I just have to make sure I remember what I need and how to make it. And I still understand machines even when my machine is not working.”

“Wow. That’s amazing. We’ve really got to let you meet my brother. The only problem is I don’t know if we’ll be able to pull you away from him.” He laughed, and a small smile pulled at my lips. He was just so sincere.

I was not used to talking while I was working, but since he was here… “So, what was this extermination you were talking about yesterday?”

He laughed. “Oh, that. Remember the death trap race I mentioned on our last day in Pike? Well, that was the extermination. It’s meant to take all the worst criminals and reform them into “upstanding members of society”. Needless to say, it didn’t work the way it was supposed to. But I joined because I heard that anyone who was participating was in even greater danger than they were supposed to be, so I joined to protect them and get all of them out alive, if I could.”

“Did it work?”

He nodded. “Actually, it did. There were so many times when I thought we were all going to die, but we somehow made it all out alive.

On the very first night, we got stranded on a condemned island, and we found out there are these creatures about two or three meters high with sharp claws and rotating teeth and a huge sticky tongue hanging out the backs of their heads that they’d invert out through their mouths to catch prey.” That sounded terrifying. “They, uh, liked iron, I guess, so whenever anyone got cut, they’d swarm. They didn’t know what to make of me.” He frowned at that. “They like iron but hate electricity. It’s weird. We had to deal with them the entire extermination. We called them leeches.

“They crashed our party the second night—it didn’t go well, but I remember that a lot of it was sort of fun, running after them with swords. That was when I learned that Rat enjoys parties and will wear dresses just as readily as pants and hoodies.” Couldn’t relate to that. “She’s very…well, anyway.” He flushed bright red, and I had to force myself to not say a sarcastic comment. He was too nice to make a sarcastic comment yet.

He continued after he finally stopped blushing. “I think it was…the fourth day that we found the…I guess you’d call her the mother of all leeches? Dismater. Like a mega-leech that controlled the entire sea’s version of the Plexus. She could shapeshift, too—pretend to be Rat’s sister just to mess with us. That was a tough day. Well, they all were. Dismater wanted us dead because she thought that’s what Tersatellus wanted. And her leeches would try to steal us and drag us somewhere—we lost Voxel on the second day and Spike on the third. Obviously, they lived, but it was…difficult.”

Rat returned while he was telling me the last story, and she smiled and sat down beside him. She leaned against him, and he flushed as he finished it up. And I was able to finish the alien shield machine as he finished as well. When he was done talking, I held it up to examine it and make sure it was actually functional.

Eli stared at it. “Is it finished?”

“No, I’m just holding it up in front of my face because I don’t know what else to do with it.”

Eli actually looked concerned. “Is…is that sarcasm?”

I nodded as Rat snorted. “Congrats. What’s this machine of yours do?”

Eli grinned and spoke up before I could. “She’s making something that will mostly protect us from the aliens’ powers that can make us not feel any emotions except peace. Isn’t that cool?”

“Huh.” Rat eyed me, and I held the machine tighter. I wasn’t going to let her destroy it just to make sure that I didn’t run off. “Well, I’ve never felt that, but I’ll take your word on it. Hopefully, you’re not making it to run off after those jellyfish alone.” I shook my head. At least not yet. She clapped her hands and smiled. “You two better be ready. We need to leave soon for the parties!”

Crap. I hadn’t even changed or anything. I ran off, but I could hear Eli and Rat talking quietly as I left. Were they keeping something from me? What was going on?

 The party we first went to was as loud and crowded as the one in Pike, but there were some differences. Everyone, besides us, was dressed in some kind of ridiculous outfit. Rat had told us it was called fashion in Joanndu. Also, there was a dance performance happening on a stage while everyone else danced on the floor below the stage.

While Rat and Eli danced with the crowd, I slipped through it to get to a place where I could see the performance. It was amazing. I watched it for a while before I heard a whisper in my ear. “Don’t take your eyes off your so-called friends. We’re always watching.” I stiffened. Crap.

I pushed back through the crowd, but Rat and Eli weren’t where I had left them. I searched everywhere, brushing past so many oblivious people, until I found them sitting at a table eating food. I relaxed and collapsed into the seat next to them. At least they were fine.

Rat frowned at me. “What’s with the expression? We realized you were interested in watching the performance, so we knew where you were. We weren’t going to leave you, if that’s what you were worried about.”

I just shook my head. “It’s nothing.” I stayed close to them for the rest of the party, though. But there were no problems. We left and headed to the next party.

This one wasn’t so much a party as it was a play. I glanced over at Rat. “I thought you wanted to go to a party.”

She shook her head with a smile. “Rude. This is actually the premiere of this play. You wouldn’t believe how hard it was to secure us tickets to this.”

“Or you just stole them.”

“Even ruder to insinuate that an upstanding citizen like me would ever steal for my own personal gain.”

We shared a smile before the play started, and I turned my attention to that. I had never actually been to a play before, so that helped push away the worries about the aliens. It was a wonderful play, all about righteous heroes and evil villains.

When the play was over, Rat pulled us to a few more parties. They were enjoyable enough, but I was dragging my feet when we were done. The sun was barely even setting, and all I wanted was to go back to the hotel and fall asleep.

While we were walking, Rat and Eli talked about how much fun the parties were. I smiled at them, but I was too tired to contribute to the conversation. Then, of course, someone had to whisper in my ear.

“Oh dear child, we know where you are. And we know where you’re going. You won’t ever be safe from us, and if you continue on this path, everyone close to you will get hurt.”

I didn’t even try to look around this time. I knew I wouldn’t see anyone. But still, I tensed. That had been Tila’s voice. Was she here? Either way, I was so tired of hearing voices. I had the machine ready. If I could find the aliens and stop them now, would Rat and Eli be safe?

We returned to the hotel room, and I grabbed my machine as Rat and Eli kept chatting. But I had to at least tell them before running off.

I didn’t look them in the eyes. I knew they wouldn’t like this, but I couldn’t stand it any longer. “I’m going to go do something. I’ll be back.”

Rat snorted as I tried to walk off, and she grabbed my arm. I stopped, but I didn’t turn back to look at her. “Whoa. What are you doing? You’re not going anywhere by yourself. Especially not with that machine. You’re planning on finding those jellyfish, aren’t you?”

“I need to.”

Eli walked up so he was standing beside her as she laughed. “Need to get yourself captured or killed? That sounds like a great idea.”

Eli frowned. “Just tell us what’s been going on. It’s okay. Why are you so jumpy about this?”

I shook my head. If I told them, if I involved them, they would just get hurt. “I…I can’t.”

Rat’s hand tightened around my arm. “And why the hell not? I’m not going to lose you to those stupid jellyfish just because you think you’re invincible! It doesn’t work like that! You’re just going to do exactly what they want!”

Why, why couldn’t they just understand? “Because I don’t want you to get hurt! Because I know it’s a stupid plan, but I can’t stand their whispers in my head, their threats against you! I hate being the reason you’re in danger! I can’t let this continue!”

Rat frowned and pulled me back toward the beds, and I didn’t fight her. She had me sit on one bed, and they both sat on the other. She leaned forward and stared at me. “Okay. Tell us what’s going on here. You’ve been jumpy for a while. I know that what happened with Motor would make you nervous, but this has been happening even before that.”

I bowed my head. I wouldn’t be able to brush it off this time. “I’ve been hearing the aliens whispering in my ears since Pike. They’ve been telling me that I’m alone, and that anyone who is close to me will be hurt. I especially hear it when I’m actually feeling comfortable and happy. They’re doing this because of me, so I want to be the one to stop them.”

Rat looked over at Eli. “Well, screw them then.”

Eli shook his head and watched me with concern in his eyes. “Don’t you see that that’s what they want? They want to get you alone. That’s probably their plan. Please don’t go after them, especially alone.”

I frowned and actually looked at them. “But—”

Rat scoffed. “You think we’re scared of a few stupid jellyfish? Didn’t you hear the stories Eli was telling you about the extermination? We’ve survived plenty of things we shouldn’t have. Anyway, as I’ve already said, you’re my gangster, so I don’t care what you’re bringing after us. That’s just what happens.” She sighed. “Tell you what, let’s just leave the situation now, and if there’s any evidence of them in Fre Jac-Mac, we’ll deal with it then.”

I frowned. I’d rather finish this now, but she had a point. They probably wanted me to pursue them now. “Fine.”

Eli grinned, and Rat nodded. “Good. Now, let’s get some sleep. I want to be on the road for Fre Jac-Mac early in the morning.”

FLCL Progressive Ep. 2 “Freebie Honey” review

FLCL Progressive continues to build its characters this week as we get some expansion on a potential budding relationship between Hidomi and Ide. Plus we get some elaboration on the interpersonal connections between Jinyu and Haruko.

Hidomi’s detachment to the world remains consistent this week. One thing that stays on her mind and distracts her throughout the episode is another apocalypse dream, this one about zombies with her providing a cutesy narration on the mindless creatures, including herself and Ide, tear into each other. There’s still very little that can shake her out of this indifference, even as Jinyu keeps trying to make various interrupted warnings to her about avoiding Haruko. She’s still the only one in her homeroom class not caught up in the thrall of Haruko rambling about how the adults of the world have let everything fall apart. Her attitude is clearly part of why she seems to be a point of interest for Haruko, as she’s asked to take the work Ide missed due to his absence in class that day to his home.

While she’s accomplishing this, we see some of Ide’s personal life on display for us and it’s some nice subversion of who the character seemed to be from the first episode. It turns out he works intense physical labor job in the junkyards of the poor parts of town to help his family make ends meet. The people around his neighborhood are consistently at the ready to remind him of where he is in the hierarchy in this environment, as we see him get physically abused by both his boss and some criminals he tries to sell some cheap custom merchandise. Hidomi witnessing this seems to trigger something in her as her headphones start whirring and shining red, as seen a couple times last episode. It’s in these moments that her nose bleeds and she becomes faint. While they’re in Ide’s room as he helps her try to stop the bleeding, the two have a couple of endearingly awkward moments as they each try to navigate where they want this conversation to go. Before things go too far for good or ill, they’re interrupted by the sudden arrival of both Haruko and Jinyu.

We get expansion on stuff that was hinted at last time with this episode’s big set piece moment, a fight in the sky between Jinyu and Haruko. Their connection is spelled out explicitly when Jinyu says “You and I are one” so that’s no longer a matter of speculation. The contrast between Jinyu’s cool headedness and Haruko’s manic energy gets to be shown off here as Jinyu’s sincere and bold declarations are frequently deflected by Haruko interjecting with a joke or non sequitur. New information also gets brought into play as Jinyu starts talking about whatever Haruko’s goal this time around has become. It’s clearest with two specific lines from Jinyu towards Haruko; “Are you going to make the same mistake again?” and “You can’t reach him without me.” Who and what these statements are referring to is vague at the moment, but that’s irrelevant to the entertainment value of the fight itself.

A lot goes on with the sequence visually with the main highlights being the smaller moments mixed in with everything else. Jinyu taking a call from Hidomi’s mom in the middle of the fight goes by quick but seeing Jinyu figure out how to say she;s busy and get back to fighting has some charm to it. There’s a moment where we actually see what happens to the mech in this world before they’re warped through a person’s head, as Haruko once again uses Ide as her portal of choice. A big aspect of this fight is Jinyu’s transforming Chevy, which flies, sprouts guns and becomes a robot at various points throughout the fight. The two women dueling in the air with their guitars is one of the simpler things that goes on through this, but it’s still fun. The best gag in the fight comes from how Hidomi’s first transformation goes down. After the event gets triggered by her seeing Ide suffer through the fight due to being dragged around by Haruko on a dog collar the horn on her head grows, gathers scraps from the junkyard below and the sequence begins. Rather than the gracefully machine we saw in her dream from the cold open of the first episode, she becomes a misshapen ragdoll of a machine that gets one good blow in on Haruko before she goes back to normal.

The fight, expanding on Ide’s homelife and all the quick gags in this episode make it a decent extension on what Progressive was presenting in the first episode. Though there’s still elements that feel like this iteration of FLCL is trying to find its identity. For everything else in this episode, Hidomi and Ide being able to laugh a little as she finally gives him the work he missed from class after the chaos they were caught up in between two strange women made a nice genuine moment to end on. I’d like to see more of that as the season goes on.

Robert Bruce Banner’s life was never really going to be happy. Maybe he always knew, even just in the back of his mind. From the moment he was born he was treated like a precious gift by one parent, one who had secretly hoped and dreamed and wished and flushed her birth control pills, and like a monster dragged straight from hell by the other, one who made sure he never forgot that he was a burden and a waste and a nuisance and a freak, a freak, a freak. Dad never wanted kids. He wanted Mom all to himself, that was all. Mom tried to comfort him, giving the baby his name in a last ditch effort to forge a bond between father and son, but it was too late before it even started. And the more Mom loved her little boy, the more Dad started to hate the both of them. He killed his wife when the baby was three years old, and the little boy was never called Robert again.

Bruce grew up with his aunt Elaine, uncle William, a cousin Jennifer. He was deeply troubled, and spent most of his childhood being misdiagnosed. Post-Traumatic Stress so deeply embedded in his psyche that he’s damaged by an event he doesn’t even remember. Bipolar disorder, high highs that kept him up for days and low lows that sent him back into the dark. Aspergers, fixations and detachment and shyness. Nothing quite stuck, because not enough factors applied, or too many crossed over with one another, or the drugs didn’t work. But they sure did try a lot of drugs. Bruce doesn’t really remember most of his childhood, floating through a fog, until one day in his early teens he decided he didn’t care anymore and overdosed. He’d rather be dead than asleep all the time.

It didn’t work. Obviously. But it was enough to get his psychiatrists and therapists to pull back, let him breathe a little, which was all he wanted anyway, and by the time he was fifteen he had leaped far ahead of his peers, graduating high school and then college within two years, and moving on to his master’s degree while still fighting over a shared bathroom with his cousin. He was a genius, bona fide, and by the time Bruce was old enough to legally live on his own he had his pick of universities fighting over him for their PhD programs.

Years and four PhDs later, at Culver University, he met Betty Ross while they were both participating in a study on hallucinogens. As the test subjects. It was the best night of his life, and he would never be the same. They were close for several years, until her father came back from overseas and took charge of a new program attempting to recreate the super serum. Good becomes great, bad becomes worse wasn’t exactly a well-known philosophy except from Doctor Erskine’s original coffee-stained scribblings that read like the ravings of a mad man, and so, Bruce went in blind. Then came the Avengers Initiative, less than two weeks after he left America again. The Black Widow found him in Calcutta, and he couldn’t say no to saving the world if he was promised not to have to resort to the other guy’s power. Of course that backfired, of course it did, but not in the way he expected. 

Still, he didn’t want to celebrate the monster he had become, and so he returned to his research into finding a cure, so lost in his work that he mindlessly, stupidly, selfishly, agreed when Tony decided it was a good idea to create AI that could do the Avengers’ jobs for them. If he didn’t want to be the Hulk anymore, what better than preventative measures? 

One major city and one small Eastern-European nation later, and he was proven wrong. Again. He would only ever bring destruction and pain and heartbreak, and so his Id did what he couldn’t. He left. And two years later, he woke up on another planet with Thor staring into his face. He and Thor stopped the desolation of Asgard—by destroying Asgard—and took the remaining people on an escape pod toward Earth when Thanos attacked them. Heimdall sent him to Earth to send a warning of Thanos’ impending arrival, but there was no use for that, either. No amount of warning could have prepared the Avengers for what happened.

For the next five years after Thanos’ devastation of Earth—of the universe, the Avengers were scattered to the winds in defeat. Bruce retreated to California, where he didn’t exactly continue his efforts to get rid of the Hulk, but he did start a new effort to make peace. He wasn’t able to transform when he needed to, when the universe needed him to, and as much as he loathed and feared what he was capable of as the Hulk, he knew that having powers and doing nothing with them was also unacceptable. Hulk had always been with him, but wasn’t him. 

And so he started studying Dissociative Identity Disorder, and learning how to communicate with Hulk, and to share the body with him. They divide their time evenly. Hulk is allowed to have hobbies other than destroying things (though usually the local junkyard is more than happy to have him), and he never forces his way out unless it’s to keep Bruce alive in mortal peril. Including wielding the Infinity Stones to restore the universe.

The Hulk was forever changed by using the Gauntlet. Not in a bad way, but not good either. Even Bruce’s arm suffered minor nerve damage, and injuries never used to touch the Hulk, let alone be severe enough to effect Bruce. But they survived. And they can use what they have to make the world a better place.

There are rare occasions where a one-line billing statement at the end of a project is appropriate. Usually, the billing statements should contain sufficient detail so that the client can understand the work that was performed and the costs that were advanced. The statements should be sent on a regular basis, usually monthly.

Hopefully, the competition between attorneys and others providing similar services will not put them into a bidding war for the work. As the old adage goes, “you get what you pay for,” and quality may be sacrificed. Also, it would be a mistake to put too much emphasis on an hourly rate, since excessive hours from an inexperienced attorney will nullify the benefit of a low hourly rate.
