y'all voted overwhelmingly for the codywan bodyguard/fake marriage au in that poll last month so I come bearing a little intro/teaser for it. :)

It's an ordinary Tuesday and Cody should've known it wouldn't stay that way.

When he comes into work, Fox and Wolffe are holed up arguing in their office. Cody diligently ignores them in favor of getting on with his own shit in the relative peace; he's only just gotten their accounts into shape and he's still working on maximizing their profits and cutting down expenses. (They were rather bleeding money when Fox and Wolffe had been taking care of the books themselves.) 

Before long, his closed door is ignored and the brothers stroll in with a feral energy that raises Cody's hackles. Last time they looked like that, they'd roped him into joining their business—and the time before, he'd been convinced to go cliff jumping. Trouble, all the same. 

"Cody," Fox croons dangerously. 

"No thank you."

Fox scoffs. "Told you he wouldn't even hear us out."

Cody narrows his eyes. "You can't taunt me into being interested," he lies. From Fox's smirk, he knows. (And isn't that just the problem with working with family?) 

"Cody, Fox," Wolffe snaps exasperatedly. "Can we get to the point?" 

It's serious, then. Cody frowns. "What is it? You need to fire someone?" 

"It's a job," Fox says, sitting on the edge of Cody's desk. "We need someone undercover and you're it." 

"I'm not a guard," Cody points out. He was very specific when he joined Canidae Personal Protection; he'd gone to school for business management and accounting—he's the numbers guy, the one who could keep his brothers' dream running and growing. Because, look, he supports it one hundred percent. Fox and Wolffe had long wanted to have a one stop shop for protective services and self-defense classes, specifically for underserved communities who were really in danger. But that didn't mean he wanted to be a bodyguard or even a trainer. Cody made sure they could do what they wanted and found ways they could put more money toward the people who mattered. That's where his skills really make a difference. 

"That's why you're ideal for this. It needs to be… discreet."

Cody narrows his eyes at Fox, trying to discern what exactly he's not being told. 

Wolffe sighs. "Cody, you're our best man for the job. We need someone we can trust." 

"Bly," Cody names. 

Wolffe glares at Fox and Cody imagines this was part of the argument he overheard earlier. 

"Not possible," Fox insists, mostly to Wolffe. "To do something undercover on this level, with this time crunch? We need a blank slate. No partner, no bodyguarding history, but capable of guarding." 

Undercover. No partner. Ah. "You want me to be a pretend boyfriend." 

Fox lights up. "Not quite," he says. "But that's the real highlight, this guy is your type. You'll have no trouble selling it."

"My type?" Cody raises an eyebrow. "Which is?"

"Don't act like you don't have one," Fox scoffs. "We know you."

"Look," Wolffe jumps in before it can get messy. "You'll get along with him, is all. And you're not engaged."

Cody hums. Fair, Bly wouldn't be suited to pretend date someone else. Cody still doesn't like it, but he can see the desperation on Wolffe's face and hiding behind Fox's pushing. Whatever the reason, they really do need him. 

"Fine," Cody relents. "But you're telling me every detail and I'm not cheap." 

"Great." Fox grins sharply as he hops off the desk, clapping his hands together. "I already hacked your data. Congrats, you're now Cody Kenobi."

Y/N catches Levi reorganizing the bookshelf for the third time that week and teases him about what a "fun Saturday night" he's having. Levi says at least his idea of fun doesn't involve belting out 90s pop songs drunkenly at 2am like SOME people…

Levi "subtly" fixes his hair for the fifth time before Y/N arrives and denies doing any such thing when she points it out.

When Y/N stretches and a sliver of her midriff shows, Levi tries and fails to keep his eyes forward, earning a smirk from Y/N.

Y/N finds Levi's search history full of questions like "What does it mean when you can't stop thinking about someone?" and "How to get a girl to notice you."

After Y/N falls asleep on his shoulder during movie night, Levi stays frozen in place long after the movie ends just to keep her there.

Levi "coincidentally" shows up at the cafe where Y/N is studying and claims he had no idea she'd be there.

Y/N jokingly asks Levi to help her move some furniture. He shows up in a full suit and tie wanting to make a good impression.

When Y/N has a girls' night out, Levi not-so-casually asks what she's wearing and who all is going.

Levi visibly tenses when Y/N laughs at another guy's joke, crossing his arms and sulking.

When Y/N gets scared during a horror movie, Levi immediately wraps a protective arm around her without thinking.

Y/N teases Levi for meticulously sorting his book collection by color, author, and genre. Levi retorts that at least he has a system unlike SOME people's messy shelves.

When Y/N comes home with a new haircut, Levi awkwardly compliments it, saying it's "suitable" and "appropriate for your face shape".

Levi not-so-accidentally schedules cleaning sessions whenever he knows Y/N will be exercising in tight leggings and a tank top.

Y/N notices Levi fidgeting to fix his already perfectly straight cravat before their weekly tea time together.

After Y/N beats Levi in training, he spends the rest of the day obviously sulking though he denies doing so.

Levi reorganizes the kitchen cabinets to "maximize efficiency" but really it's just an excuse to be around Y/N more.

When another soldier gets too friendly with Y/N, Levi suddenly needs to discuss urgent "military tactics" with her.

Y/N laughs at Levi's claim that he's ordering a new cleaning supply for "sanitary reasons" when it's the exact brand she mentioned liking recently.

Levi stumbles over his words trying to casually return a handkerchief to Y/N he noticed fell from her pocket earlier.

When Y/N comes back from expeditions outside the walls, Levi does a full inspection of her gear asking about every tiny scratch and scuff.

Japanise GP Reflection

I got a nap in so I will be able to put together a coherent summary of how I felt about the race. There was nonstop action which is always great. I wasn't bored for a single moment

How did so many cars make contact in the first lap, and nobody immediately retired afterwards? Well eventually they did but I was surprised to see a lot of them still racing for a few laps after

A part of me wants Checo to succeed because I really don't want that PR guy taking his seat. The circumstances in which PR has gotten a seat on the grid back is downright nasty. And I don't care if I sound bitter to his fans. He still doesn't deserve a spot back in F1. And another part wants Checo to not get anymore points as that will make it easier for Lewis to be P2 in the driver's standings

Also, another addition to my conspiracy (of the FIA allowing RedBull to get away with things) is whatever tf RedBull were doing, allowing Checo to come back out. Apparently, there's actually no rules against this? But I can see them implementing something afterwards so other teams don't exploit this

I'm so proud of Oscar. He's grown so much as a driver this season and he will only get better and better. "If you had more pace why didn't you just overtake on the track" because he's not trying to ruin his tires

Nothing wrong with Lando suggesting team orders with Oscar because he was the quicker one of the two 🤷‍♀️. It all worked out in the end

Charles had a race weekend where nothing went wrong. Well I saw a clip on twitter of Xavi suggesting a strategy and Charles turning it down. Good for him. I can't help but wondering how he's reacting to the streak of 4th place finishes though

Mercedes you need to get on your zoom. The task at hand is to finish P2 in the driver's and constructor's championship. Which means maximize the amount of points possible. Ferrari are still finishing races with more points than y'all are. Like they haven't made any huge mistakes since the summer break. Charles and Carlos have closed the gap significantly

Feels like I'm in an episode of the Twilight zone because another team's strategy blunder worked for Charles's benefit. It's usually the other way around

This makes me have more questions. Instantly, the audience at how saw that switching places would have been the most efficient. George's tires had already degraded a lot. So why does it take Toto, who's recovering from surgery and is not even there, to make that call? Get it together!

Y'all why does it feel like this team is too stubborn? They're not listening to Lewis! For the DRS strategy to work, they would both need some pace in the tires and only one of them did. I got secondhand embarrassment when Carlos called it out like omg...

Alonso seemed maaaaaaaad like we are seeing the cracks starting to show. I don't think that 33rd win is coming this season. But he was calm in the post-race interview so I don't know

Lance went front P17 to P9 and had to retire due to reliability. I just want him to score points again this is not fair 😔

Why tf did AlphaTauri not give Yuki the optimal strategy? If he had more pace, swap positions with Liam! I saw that he was in DRS range for a lot of laps but didn't get why they didn't call for team orders. Such a missed opportunity, and it hurts even more that it was his home GP

So like did Alpine give Esteban orders and not tell Pierre? That's so messy they should have held the positions until the end

The funniest part about my OCs is that, out of all characters, Kee has the most normal parents (others I just didn't get much into-)

Like. There are three somewhat main characters: Derres, Lioo and Kee (like Sonic the Hedgehog). There's also Ies, but her deal is kind of Complicated™, since they're not quite. Someone to have parents. Cuz. She's a demon-

But anyways (warning for death mention):

Derres doesn't want to remember his parents much to not let the grief and trauma resurface, but he idolises them a lot. However, his speech about them is more often than not very... vague, prioritising the feeling of him missing their company than any specific memory. And I don't blame him, because, if you actually dig in, there aren't many niceties to remember! Being a witcher in a secluded place, from a dynasty of sorts, it was inevitable that a lot of responsibility would be put onto him, especially considering he is the youngest, most recent holder of the amplifiers. So, the pressure resulted in an odd dynamic where young Derres knew that he is loved (he must be loved), but would dismiss his own feelings to prioritise what is important, so that he would be given attention (the way to earn love). Of course, it does not mean the parents were cold to him all the time, but it was not an ideal dynamic. And sadly, one that could not be prevented or, at least, mended. Not now...

Lioo, on the other hand, despises her mom, namely because of how she handled her proposal to become Derres' apprentice. Now, obviously, she was 18 when she left home to do what she wanted, so you need to take this with a grain - or a cup - of salt. However, her decision had somewhat reasonable roots: she saw how much Derres provided for the community, stressing himself out every day, and wanted to easen up his job. Her mom did not take it well, though, shutting down the idea at every possibility. Think of "Blow My Brains Out" by Tikkle Me, specifically the chorus (lyrics):

Mixing together teenager maximalism and seeing the indifferent response to trying to fix the issue is bound to create fire. And it wasn't put out, even after drowning. In fact... The rift deepened. Since, who else can be blamed for your daughter's death, but the man who "took her away with witchcraft"? Who else can be yelled at for ruining your child? For making a deal with a demon? Who else?

And then we have Kee, who has been fully supported by his parents throughout his entire life. Said parents tried their best to help him adjust to the prosthetics and reach out when their son suddenly isolated himself and left the city. He's gonna regret that, alright.

All in all, very funny how the guy you'd expect to have fucked up upbringing actually has it fine, he just got hurt much later in life than the rest, hence why his coping isn't very good. And well. We are witnessing it in real time, and not as a memory. Trauma is messy

off the top of my head i actually dont know. i cant believe but i dont really know what The People think of Ink. i wanna say people perceive them as very blunt . straightfowards. a bit silly from this. And i'd say thats right . ink is very forwards with how theyre feeling about things at the moment and far more Act NowThink Never . "because im soooo awesome. thinking is for NERDS!"

💙 - Describe their bedroom! Is it personalized, unchanged? Messy, neat?

(grimly looks off into distance as this prompts me to think about how i wanna redraw the whole prologue so i can better show off ink's bedroom considering what little we saw in comic is Not Accurate.)

ahem. this is to say, Jesus Christ ink has a Lot of "stuff" they keep around very messy. they share a room though so the chaos is (as best as they can manage) restrained to their half of the room.

the "stuff" is mainly trinkets and whatever they've either found outside (e.g. cool rocks, sticks), made (as practice, but they're not allowed to have weapons so its usually just random stuff they thought "i could make that" and then did), or belongs to them (clothes.) (there's not really anything seperating clean clothes from dirty. they're just. all around. doesn'tmatter. shes wearing outdoor shoes inside and sleeps in her outside clothes because why put on pjamas if youre just gonna have to puton the outside clothes again TCH!) . ... tl;dr messy room 1 billion things everywhere on her half of the room.

Honestly no Maxim is very rational and would not be scared of whatever. I mean this so nicely to them because i love them dearly but i think Maxim lacks the imagination to even have things to imagine that would be scary. I don't think they're even scared of normal things to be afraid of.

💭 - How is their mental health? Do they struggle with guilt or shame?

this feels really funny to say but maxim is actually doing pretty good. they're extremely normal . until fearcorp happens , which just makes them feel very stressed and worried about Angelina specifically because they're very scared something bad will happen to it , be it from someone else, or it does to itself . (they dont really feel worried for their own well being because... its the strangest thing, really, but they just have this sense of Knowing that they're not really in any danger. They won't die here, like this. but that they don't feel that sure about Angelina, well..)

so no in general maxim doesn't have any problems with their mental health . fearcorp exception due to being literally the most nightmare event anyone in that story has gone through. live laugh love.

Unit Teambuilding - Brendan

Ah, Brendan.  Long the butt of many a joke due to his lack of Mega Sceptile, he has finally been vindicated.  DeNA are giving him the Mega.  This is great.  On the one hand, getting a mega late means no penalty to sync, so it's all upside.  Moreover, this means other options can be altered.  Mega Abomasnow Candice?  Mega Salamence BP Zinnia and Drake?  Think about it, DeNA.

But more importantly, it raises a significant question.  Despite the mega evolution being the center of conversations about Brendan for some time, we now have to ask...is that really what he needed?  Grid expansions are happening, and Brendan notably did not receive one.  Grimsley did.  And yeah, Grimsley's bombed, so maybe Brendan dodged a bullet, but is the mega sufficient to pick him up, or was this a matter of chasing the wrong thing? I kind of already answered this, and I wouldn’t be asking if we didn’t know the answer, but let’s talk.

General Overview Let's start with a generally accepted statement: Brendan holds up.  Among general pool sync pairs, Brendan's had it pretty good.  Trainer move instantly caps both offenses, and he can cap his crit rate too, all by first sync.  Dire Hit+ means any Team Sharp Entry user saves him a turn, while any ally that caps crit lets him start blasting away on turn 2.  Leaf Storm is quite potent damage, due to its severe penalty and accuracy check, while his striker sync is fairly unique among Grass type general pool options, shared currently only by Selene.  His grid also offers a full 100% multiplier for sync, and a whopping 80% bonus move damage, making Brendan a fairly competent Striker.

His flaws, however, are many and severe, and are something I feel like aren't talked about often enough.  Brendan has an accuracy check he doesn't solve himself.  He needs to waste ten energy on his grid, in a fairly out of the way location, to solve for that.  His main DPS is Leaf Storm, which is great damage, but locks him into Dauntless without a grid skill to compensate, cutting DPS and sync.  His grid multipliers are speed (and sun) based, but he has no means of buffing his own speed.  His synergy with the current top Grass meta is frankly atrocious, as Bullet Seed is not sufficient DPS to make partnership with Adaman, SC Steven, or SS Acerola worthwhile; Selene has benefited more from recent meta changes than he has.  CS updated parameters also didn't help him, as his physical sync to special DPS means he doesn't save a free 100 points by checking one damage type off the list.

I'm not saying the mega is bad or unnecessary.  +30% attack and +10% special attack is nice, and will pay dividends when he does get the expansion.  But I think the order of operations is rough for him.  High stats was not what Brendan needed in this moment.  What he needed was Fast Track, Dauntless, and Pinpoint Entry.  Without them, shopping for Brendan is incredibly challenging, as nothing will provide all of those tools for him, necessitating some concessions on any possible grid.

Team 1: Brendan, Marley, Colress A fairly straight-forward Sync build.  Brendan wants to aim for maximizing offenses, capping speed quickly, and dealing as much damage as possible on sync.  Marley is a great common pair for this goal, capping speed in two turns, and offering Team Sharp Entry to conserve a turn of buffing on Brendan's end.  Colress has AoE Screech, which is just insanely good for anything physically inclined.

Team 2: Brendan, Lodge Elesa/Lodge Cynthia, Blaine/Lucian A more DPS focused build.  Leaf Storm works best when the accuracy nodes don't need to be directly checked, and removing the need for Brendan to boost his own crit rate is divine.  But then we run into problems.   Because you have to decide between Sun for the 50% move damage, or speed buffs for Inertia.  And unless the Lodge pairs are EX, you're likely going to sync with Brendan.  So there's just...a very messy situation going on here, where he has to make a difficult choice between his bigger multiplier, or something that also benefits his sync.

Team 3: Brendan, SS Morty, SS Lyra If you want to get Brendan to peak efficiency, this is the team.  Sun and Grassy Terrain are the all-important field effect combo, and Morty does provide speed buffs for him, while Lyra can debuff.  This is all well and good, but notably, even with two of the best pairs in the game at his side, Brendan still will not cap Speed without an unusual grid structure from Morty, and must give up one of his offensive tools to correct for accuracy.  Even with these two, Brendan is going to encounter some difficulty getting where he wants to go

Team 4: Brendan, Leaf, Gardenia The only other team I really value as worth talking about is this one, and it's anti-Moltres tech.  Leaf gives accuracy and speed buffs on her first sync, after which Brendan just starts firing.  Both he and Gardenia, under perma-Sun, thrive. You'll want at least some luck on Leaf's Staggering, but the Potion with Friend Mend solves a lot of the issues the fight otherwise produces

Final Thoughts "Brendan holds up" is a technically true statement, that I feel ignores a lot of the problems he currently has.  Yes, his DPS and sync, on a theoretical level, hold up.  But functionally, there is nothing that completely salvages everything he needs.  And truth be told, nothing short of a grid expansion is likely to fix what ails him.  I think, provided he gets the three tools he most needs - Dauntless, Pinpoint Entry, and Fast Track 9 - Brendan could become one of the best general pool sync pairs.  But without them, he's in a relatively awkward spot where you can get him to work, but he's never quite coming together to do everything as advertised. Yes, he holds up, but he holds up in the same way you can technically get base Iris to clear off-type. He’ll do it, but it’s not coming together as easily as the modern meta would expect for a 5*.

A broken window, blood all over the floor and bloodied footprints leading to the kitchen, that's what Kravchenko saw as he carefully followed them, gun in hand, ready to shoot down whoever dared to break into his home.

"stop right there!"- he yelled, pointing his gun at the furry humanoid figure that towered over him, coated in blood. "I swear to God- What did you do this time, Timur?!"

He placed his gun at the counter, watching as the creature lowered itself to look him in the eyes, giving him an apologetic look.

"For the love of God! Just give them your number already" - Kapano practically begged - "you two are flirting for MONTHS, stop being a pussy!". Timur sigh, he's been at it all day long. First of all they were not flirting, they were just friends, Timur admired how hard Zasha worked to raise their niece on their own. As he opens his mouth to give his friend a snarky response the door bell echoes through the empty coffee shop.

"Welcome to Perseus, make yourself at home" - he turned around to see who it was ans sure enough, it was them - "Hello Timur! I'll have the usual, please" - they said, sitting down and resting their head on the counter, they looked exhausted. Their hair was messy and they had deep, dark circles around their eyes, Timur felt bad for them so he decided to do something nice.

He placed the coffee on the counter besides them, along with a croissant and a cupcake- "this one is on the house and no, I won't hear it. The cupcakes is for the little one" - Zasha tried to protest but Timur just wouldn't budge, he started getting ready to close as Zasha finished their coffee.

".....So, would you like to uh- hang out sometime?"

He smiled - "I would love too"

Do they believe the College of Winterhold caused the Great Collapse? If no, what is their theory?

maxim is the only one at the college - aside from savos aren and possibly urag gro-shub - who can remember the great collapse, since he was living in the actual city of Winterhold at the time. he was in Dawnstar when the storms blew in, and by the time it all cleared, his old life had gone to the sea. so, for the past 80 years, he's been researching the event, going to the cliffsides and rubble to see if he can collect any evidence of what happened, whether it be magic or daedric forces or anything else entirely.

he doesn't think the college caused it, but after spending the past 80 years working/living/researching there, he wouldn't be surprised if perhaps a ritual had gone wrong… but he doesn't blame them, if that's the case. it's hard to control magic, and even harder to control precise rituals and their aftermaths at times. he just misses his home, his city, his old life, etc. and he'd do just about anything to get them back.

Do they have family? Who do they consider to be family?

emeros has his aunt and uncle, back in Valenwood, but he doesn't consider them to be close. they raised him, but being altmer (and him not being their actual child, and them being unable to have children of their own), they were rather closed-off and treated him more as an obligation rather than a real family member. still, he does think of them from time to time, but not with much fondness. eventually, he sees the other members of the trio to be like a family to him, in a way, and is fiercely protective of the other two.

wyndrelis was disowned for an accident no one could have foreseen nor prevented, so he does not have any relationship to his family anymore. he considers the trio the closest thing he's ever had to family, and while he carries a very melancholic demeanor, he genuinely loves them and tries to do what he can to show that he cares for them.

athenath has a complicated relationship with the term "Family", mostly because the closest thing to a real family they've ever had were their childhood friends + their parents, not his own. while he adores his grandparents, he hasn't been able to see them in a long time since they lived so far away, and connections tend to fizzle out with the ages. they are not close to their parents by any means. they had a cousin that he was really close to most of their life, but they're not on speaking terms at the moment. eventually, they see the other members of the trio to be like a family, even if complicated and messy and exhausting, and they love the other two dearly.

What is their stance on taking a life? Do they kill without a second thought, in the name of a god or daedra, or do they adhere to pacifism?

emeros has taken lives in self-defense in his many years on the road. he never does it without a reason or without trying to diffuse the situation first, as it's not something he takes pleasure in. i absolutely think emeros would be considered a pacifist for that, but he's far from incapable of defending himself or doing what's necessary. he's capable of more violence than he lets on, which is why he prefers to be gentle and kind and helpful instead.

wyndrelis has very complicated feelings on the act of killing, but like emeros, he mostly acts in self defense. he likes to think of himself as capable but unwilling, but in the back of his mind, he does kinda crave a little bit of bloodshed here and there. as a treat.

athenath is a devotee of mara, the goddess of compassion. it's hard to explain their exact position, because they never have had to take a life, but as they travel skyrim, they realize that sometimes maras compassion does little to keep them safe from harm. sometimes you just need to do what's necessary, and sometimes a quick kill with an arrow can be satisfying in a way it shouldn't be.

Name: Magnolia “Magnum” / “Maggy” / “Mags” Inoue  Gender: Nonbinary (Ze/zir/zirs) General Appearance: 

Magnolia stands at a comfortable 5′3″/158 cm and will grow to be 5′5″/168 cm by the time ze reach 17 years old. Zir outfits are always in an extensive range of colors, and ze believes in maximal fashion style. Zir favorite go-to's would always be quilted trousers and vests. Their color orange always includes yellow, purple, white, or all three, but it doesn't mean it is limited. Please expect zir to wear the entire rainbow and go through layering hell whenever ze is going out. Zir moms have very different reactions to this one; you can imagine who reacted in which way. 

The 13-year-old middle schooler is best known for zir divinely brown eyes and mint green hair that has been cut into a mullet. Ze never picks up zir hair and prefers keeping it loose but takes the chance to style it and maintain its purposely messy look throughout the week. Ze tends to accessorize it with numerous yellow, white, and purple clips with exceeding pride over zir newly realized identity. The clips tend to be very plain and feature generic shapes of stars and triangles. Some are even grooved and have varied textures, which ze would use for self-stimulation.

Personality:

Cold-eyed Magnolia has a great sense of unbreakable pride and confidence in zirself that it seems that nothing can stand in zir way. Zir approach reflects zir mom's (Hibiki) general attitude toward handling others without necessarily the ulterior motives that said mother would often have to go into most interactions. Ze is more attuned to zirself in a way that knows who ze are for a while, and for the first time in a long while, ze has been given a chance to branch out and express without feeling pressure or closed off from zir peers and family. Though the effects of such confidence may often include: (1) not being particularly receptive to any advice from anyone, parents included; (2) being outspoken about anyone reconsidering or questioning zir takes or choices; (3) being abrasive about anyone drawing comparisons or pushing their choices on what is best for zir.

Very few people have gotten close to Magnolia as ze was growing up, and zir parents are the exception. Ze has a thin veil of confusion about zirself that ze rarely ever speaks of, and zir parents are only beginning to discover this. While overtly confident in knowing who ze is and how ze wants to be, Maggy has a tremendous fear of attachments and doubts whether or not ze can be attached or close to others. It is a fact that forming relationships of any kind can be challenging for zirself, and ze has this voice inside zir mind overthinking that each action or move that ze can make means more and more people will realize this disparity within zirself.

As a result, Magnolia can be overwhelmingly protective and even desperate to have a claim or guarantee about the little relationships ze manages to make and keep. Ze isn't one to prolong a relationship or create one based on monetary or physical goods - ze is more focused on knowing someone the best, be it at their best or their ugliest. This does mean that there is some unspoken advantage for Magnolia in arguments where ze can pull up examples of the past and describe the person in painful detail. 

Special Talents:

An unexpected gift that was discovered right after zir adoption into the Inoue family, Magnolia has absolute pitch. This was first discovered after spending time with zir aunt Martha back in England and she was playing the piano. It started with naming chords and pitches from the other room to being able to naming the key that a particular song is being played at. This has only expanded zir interest in playing instruments and zir key interest has been in percussions.

Who they like better:

As much as ze acts like her, Hibiki happens to be the preferred parent for Magnolia. Her laidback attitude and analytical method help zir out when needing to come together and understand herself. However, Sophie has helped a good portion of Magnolia understand her gender identity. It's more about getting into what makes ze feel more comfortable and also that there is no obligation in having to be one way or present another path. Mainly, Hibiki acts as the grounding for Magnolia. She is considered the "funner" parent, and Sophie's disciplined nature has already given her a disadvantage with Mags. It isn't to say that ze loves one more other the other, but Hibiki is sought out more than Sophie. This, in turn, does make zir other mother slightly hurt on realizing it but she has come to terms with knowing that Magnolia is figuring zirself out and is turning to the place ze feels most comfortable with. 

Who they take after more:

Magnolia takes after Hibiki the most outwardly, minus the flourishing language and calm attitude. Inwardly, however, Magnolia takes on Sophie a lot more than ze realizes and this stems from zir trauma response and rigidness towards authority and doubts over abandonment. It isn’t something Magnolia recognizes and it take some years before both child and mother can sit down and have a proper conversation about it. For now, Magnolia’s early teenage years are spent emulating Hibiki because she is representative of what ze wants to be like. 

Personal Head canon:

*Magnolia was an only child that was abandoned by zir father when ze was two-years-old and was through the system and taken to different foster homes who ‘hoarded’ children for the fostering allowances. Zir adoption happened when ze was 10-11 when one of zir foster parents was on Hibiki’s radar. Most likely, it was a situation that one of Hibiki’s contacts had decided to try her and the Hope’s Peak Academy alumnus decided to show why it wasn’t wise to meddle with her.  Hibiki realized the concerning home situation, and coupled with her wife’s later involvement, adopted Magnolia after two years of having zir foster parent arrested. It wasn’t at all planned nor intended for Magnolia to be adopted but their main objective was to get zir into a safe and happy home. As it turns out, that home happened to be their home. *Magnolia’s main goal entering high school is to try and get into the marching band. Neither of her parents are musically inclined but her aunt Martha happens to be quite proficient in playing the piano. She will end up being a part of the battery and quite a popular face in her high school!

okay so like. here's the thing. at some point, you have to be more... encompassing of your definition of what linguistics is and what matters to linguistics. everything is linguistics. nothing is linguistics. because guess what? language is the same principle as the body.

let me explain/continue to think out loud.

when people come into a yoga class and you ask for requests, sometimes people (I) will request particular poses because you know what I fucking love reversed revolved crescent and I don't get enough of it in These Trying Yoga Times. more often, people will say "my shoulders/lower back/neck/entire being is kinda sore, could we stretch that out?" because sometimes you're stretching one way because it seems to get at the sore spot but it doesn't resolve the underlying problem.

the underlying problem is that the entire body is connected. so when your lower back hurts, it's probably a mixture of a lot of things: actual load on your lower back muscles, but also tight hamstrings and hip flexors because we sit all day in this society and your hamstrings and hip flexors shorten when they spend a lot of time in one position (like sitting in your office chair). so you're probably making all kinds of weird shapes to stretch out your lower back, but not also addressing contributors (hamstrings, hip flexors, quads, etc.) and the underlying cause (we should get up and move more often).

one of the partitionings of linguistics is the difference between Linguistics and Applied Linguistics when it comes to things like, oh, I don't know, word learning. when I was applying to grad school I had no idea whether I should be applying to applied linguistics programs or linguistics programs, except the applied linguistics ones usually wanted either a master's degree and/or explicit interest (at least for doing coursework) in curriculum design and in-the-classroom application. fine. okay. I don't really want to be a language teacher or a language-teacher-teacher, so linguistics! great.

but then, among other things, it turns out linguists are very snooty about what "counts" as "language" and "a good way to study language", where "good" is code for physics' textbook problems involving spherical cows in vacuums—variables are maximally reduced so that we can look at "what's really going on" without any of the messy stuff getting in the way (and I think the assumption that a lot of Linguists have is that they're going to get to the messy stuff later, but it turns out, language is complicated and the messy psychosocial human stuff actually affects how we formulate our theories of language, and also, language is complicated enough that you can spend an entire 40-50-year career focused on Just That One Thing). the important thing in Linguistics is this idea of "fundamental research" or "basic science", which is our attempt at saying "no really, we're a Hard Science like chemistry and physics, not a social science or (god forbid) one of the (ugh) humanities", which like, whatever. it all matters, actually! it's all good and important!

so then obviously we get to the point where there's like, Linguistics, but also Linguistics and Psychology (caring about very different things than Linguistics, but could also care about similar things, but not if you want to be taken seriously in psychology journals) and Linguistics and Social Factors (but then you can be a fraudulent/naive sociolinguist like me and go "i mean sure I don't know the foundational works but totally I love doing social + language stuff it's so interesting") and Linguistics and Computers, and on and on and on until everyone's so siloed out that as a young ("early career") researcher in linguistics who's interested in like, all of these tendrils of other areas goes "I mean but AM I a _____linguist?" because when you're applying for jobs, they want a particular flavor of linguist and they specify in the ads which flavor they want in the "broad subfields" of linguistics.

but that part, kind of like your achy lower back, doesn't actually matter. what needs to happen is that everything needs to talk to each other, like how it's a revelation that sometimes you can stretch your hamstrings to make your back feel better. sometimes psychological and social research can make theories of linguistics better. you know why? because your body is all one interconnected piece. SUPER ANNOYING (probably) when you're a medical doctor or just a human trying to figure out why the fuck your back hurts. language is also one complicated, interconnected piece. SUPER ANNOYING when you're like "but I only care about syntax" and I come up to you and say okay but what about this psychological thing that (supports or not) this other thing in syntax? and you're like oh no, that makes things too complicated (and if you're not an asshole, you hedge and say but that's a good and important idea, language isn't something we do in a vacuum, blah blah blah, with various degrees of sincerity).

anyway, I'm bored of the nephrologists of linguistics having all the say in stuff. I want myself and the other internal medicine people of linguistics to be in charge. I AM INTERESTED IN A WHOLE THING AND GOOD AT A WHOLE THING and not just the boring shit about kidneys and syntax. and like yeah, "specializations", but if you can see how things connect, you're a lot less concerned about "oh shit I'm downloading papers on syntax AND phonology ~*what am I*~"

in conclusion, I'm applying for a big cluster hire in "learning sciences" and my PI as an example in our last meeting said "well you could frame your research statement as 'I'm interested in learning, and here are the ways'", so like, obviously I'm the #1 person who needs that job. and also I still cannot BELIEVE I got the "this seems almost too applied????? wHeRe'S tHe ThEoRy" in my reviews on this grant. it's because how humans actually do the learning matters too, brett. they're good dogs, brett.
