I JUST WATCHED ENCANTO AND LOVED IT SPOILERS AND EMOTIONS AHEAD!!

rating: 10/10 , first Disney movie to make me cry at several points during the film and not just at the emotional climax

Likes:

1.So first thing I noticed and loved was that all the people in the town and the Madrigal family are different colors and it’s never mentioned. Which sounds kinda weird, but for me personally skin color has always been such a thing for me and my siblings. It’s been that thing that decides whether I fit in or not, or if I am who I say I am or not, if my trauma matters or not. So to see a whole town of people of all different shades, a place where it doesn’t matter because we’re all family and that runs deeper than pigmentation. Plus from what I know of Latino culture, it’s a very accurate representation of their communities, a large mix of origins and ancestors coming under one umbrella to love each other and be a community. It just warmed my heart a lot.

2.NO ONE TURNS INTO AN ANIMAL! Okay here me out, we all know the animated film sin of having your poc main character turn into an animal for the entire film, so yay no one turned into an animal!!

3. The sisters songs are really amazing. Composition wise but they also allow you to see them in a different light just like Mirabella. Up until this point she’s always thought her sisters were always strong and always perfect, she never knew they were struggling so much.Plus they are such relatable songs!!! It’s telling that Luisas song has been trending on tiktok, they communicate their deeper emotions really well.

4. I, like the rest of tumblr, fell in love with Bruno realllly quickly. He is a really intriguing character and I really like how he’s portrayed. One of the biggest themes of the movie is the danger of perceived understanding, thinking you know everything about someone when you have no idea. People are complex, it does no one any favors when you assume based on others opinions. It is shown beautifully how everyone, from the townsfolk to the family, assume Bruno is an awful person who had terrible intentions behind everything he did. Since he could see the future they assumed he was telling them the future out of malice when it a lot of those cases he was probably just making a joke or an observation. That idea is Bruno is held up really well up until the moment he saves Mirabella from falling. I feel like as soon as you see his face clearly, you can tell he’s not bad. The assumptions we all had melt away so quickly and we were left with an anxious sweet man who loves his family and really meant well. I love the reunion with his sisters SO MUCH. Pepa was so critical of him and Julieta warns Mirabella not to talk about him but that hug was so beautiful and looked like they all needed it, watching their brother leave (let’s be honest he was probably kicked out) must have been so hard.

Okay now for my one main critic, cause even a ten out of ten has something I didn’t like.

This is mostly alll gonna be about Mirabella, and why she doesn’t have a gift. Mostly, I don’t get why she doesn’t have one?? It’s not explained in anyway and that frustrates me. I think they point of her not having one was to test Abuela. To see if she would love a grandchild who was missing a gift, and she fails. Yes she loves Mirabella, but not as much as her sisters or cousins. But why then, once she was accepted into the family as she was, was she not granted a power, even a small one. She HAD a door when she was 5 but it couldn’t be opened, so I assumed that once the family made it past this trial she would be granted an ability, like a fire ability ( to mimic the candle), or even the ability to see the past or intense empathy, maybe even control of the house or something. AT MINIMUM I wanted a Mirabella door, with the glowing etchings and everything but no! Tbh I’m just hoping this is something that will be explained in some kind of animated series.

I LOVED I THOUGH, I may not be Latino but i really saw myself (as a brown haired light skin with glasses) in the characters of Encanto and I felt like a little kid seeing it in theatres :)

Re-watching latter season four early season five today really woke me up to just exactly how self-absorbed Mulder became after Scully’s diagnosis. I don’t know if it was a coping mechanism or what. But I’ll be 100% honest I’m a little irritated with him at the moment. And maybe it’s my age, but I’m seeing things through a new lens. Let’s talk about it. Y’all comment your thoughts.
