Alright, here it is, my final official post on the matter:

The co-author and I, due to unfortunate circumstances, are no longer friends. And as I maintain that they were the heart and soul of the fic, I do not feel as if I could (or that it would be right to) finish writing the fic without them.

If they wanted to finish writing the fic themselves, I would be happy to transfer full document ownership over to them. However, I am not sure they have the self-confidence in their own abilities nor the willpower to finish it on their own either. And I am not in contact with them anymore.

So yes, Broken Leg Healing Hearts is officially abandoned.

If you really adore the fic and it saddens you greatly to see that happen to it, you have my full permission to write your own version of the ending. Be inspired! Be the change you wish to see! And if any of you really really want to play telephone and ask the co-author if they are going to finish it, you may let them know I would be happy to transfer ownership to them and have them finish it solo.

I've been debating for months whether to post it on tumblr since long vertical comics often don't look good in the thumbnails, still not sure I'm too happy with that bit.

Mongolian history class, 2022, start of the semester. We're having a discussion on animal slaughter, featuring the one Mongolian student in our school.

The student explains that he's slaughtered animals himself, and there are two ways of doing it that avoid the spilling of blood. For a small animal like a chicken, you reach up into the chest of the animal and sever the arteries. For a larger animal like a camel, there's a spot on the forehead that, when hit hard enough, causes the animal to die instantly.

While this discussion is going on, a couple of the students are sharing something back and forth on their phone

The professor calls this out, asking if what they're sharing is more interesting than Mongolian animal slaughter

The room is dead silent for a few seconds. The two students look at each other awkwardly.

Eventually, one of the students pipes up:

"Well, the queen of England just died."

And without missing a beat, another student:

"Did they hit her on the head like a camel?"

i'm dying over that reveal. truly. truly. because on paper, the concept that ruby's mother was just an ordinary person and what made her so special was this belief everyone had feeding into her own mythology, creating something larger than life, is actually pretty cool. and, yeah, from wild blue yonder we know the doctor absolutely handed the power of suggestion over to an unknown entity that made it something tangible.. so it works.
