I'm in a lot of book groups on Facebook. And there is a common opinion: folding pages is bad, breaking spines is bad.

But I love books that have been obviously read, and loved.

My favourite book is so worn, you can tell my favourite chapter based on how bent the spine is at that section. I love buying 2nd hand books, because to me there is nothing more beautiful than someone loving a book.

#swapitsaturday - Swanky Hanky Edition

I’m not sure how society ever got duped into trading silk handkerchiefs for cardboard boxes full of disposable paper tissues, but I have recently rediscovered the joy of silk handkerchiefs and I am never going back! Made of wood pulp, disposable paper tissues (not to mention paper towels) account for a significant amount of paper waste and trees being cut down to fuel the industry.  Weirdly, when you look at the ingredients list of some of the paper tissues they include ingredients, like stearyl alcohol, which I can only imagine would have a drying effect on a sickly, inflamed nose.

Silk hankies?  Why they cause no forest destruction, they are indefinitely reusable and they don’t contain any strange ingredients that you didn’t ask for in the first place.  And they are just so. darn. cool. looking!  (Srsly, I’ve been raving so much about my silk hanky since getting it that I’m pretty sure DH is tired of hearing it.) What makes it even better?  One hanky replaces years and years of disposable tissue purchases saving you money.  I highly recommend buying your handkerchief second hand (as I did), either from your local antique or thrift shop, as the hanky trade is a bit down right now since the “cool kids” haven’t discovered hankies yet and you can get them for super cheap.  (Mine was 50 cents, for 100% silk.)  

Vegan?  No problem.  There are lots of cotton handkerchiefs too and they come in all different colors and patterns, so why not accessorize?   I recommend purchasing at least one handkerchief per person in your home and keeping them on hand lest someone gets the sniffles.  I also keep one in my purse now so I’m always prepared.

A note on washing: I was at first a bit wary of buying silk as I figured it would be difficult to care for, but all I do is give it a simple hand wash in the sink with a wee smidge of laundry detergent and hang dry.

BUDGET TRAVEL Travel is my absolute PASSION. There’s nothing quite like the excitement of travelling some place new, the joy of seeing new sight, and experiencing new things. But I also love to get a BARGAIN! For me, you can’t talk about budget travel without camping flashing into your mind! Now I realise that camping isn’t for everyone, but don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. Here’s why I love camping: *it’s a close to nature holiday - you can hear the sounds of nature around you which is super relaxing. *it’s CHEAP! *you can make it as primitive or glamp-y as you like! Add electric, furniture, technology, or take it right back to basics with a simple field and camp fire, it’s up to you! *it’s fabulous for family bonding time. *garden camping can be equally exciting (and FREE!). *there are also many wild camping spots where you can camp for FREE (just be respectful 🌎) .*kids LOVE it! *the benefits of being in nature are immense for your mental health. *cooking becomes super exciting when you add fire or a bbq, and everyone gets involved (which also means you save money on eating out too) *you don’t have to travel very far to feel like you’re in a whole new place. Of course, the equipment you might need for camping requires an initial investment, and in the interest of money saving, it may be a good idea to trial camping in a pre erected tent for a few nights to see if you like it before you splurge on lots of items. But if you do decide to try it, you can use your tent and equipment again and again. You can also start with just the essentials, and little bits as and when you can afford them. I always find that there are loads of cheap tents and second hand camping items for sale too, so less waste and more money in your pocket. All you really need to get started is a tent, somewhere to cook, somewhere to sleep, and a place to go!
