Welcome back to Song of the Week everyone! Today marks week three of Stars Month, and lest you think this month was going to be all Anza, here’s a Marinamoon song! This week’s feature is on the Shitennou’s theme from Starlights*Ryuusei Densetsu and Kakyuu-Ouhi Kourin, “By Heaven! Kami Nomi zo Shiru!” (”By Heaven! God Only Knows!”).

This feature ended up being a little more in-depth than before. I overanalyze things all the time, and while trying to explain this song I ended up going into the lyrics, since not much is going on plot-wise when this song appears (in Kakyuu-Ouhi Kourin, a really important scene -- the scene where Beryl takes Mamoru’s Star Seed -- happens right before this song, but in Starlights, it opens a scene in Galactica Palace, and the scene preceding it is just the Starlights, Chibi-Moon, and Chibi-Chibi deciding to teleport to the palace). Lately, I’ve been trying to watch the songs I feature in the context of the musical they’re in, especially if it’s a musical I either haven’t seen or haven’t seen in a while. I’ve also been looking at the lyrics, and trying to figure out what they’re really saying. I think that says a lot about the song. I think it will make my features a little more insightful too, cause before I felt like I was just writing a report, like “Here’s the song I’m featuring, a sentence or two about it in the musical, a paragraph about what CD’s and videos and events it appeared in, and then a goodbye.” If there was some interesting feature I might elaborate on that (like how I went into the use of aventure in my “Light ni Adventure” feature or mentioned the wordplay in “Mop Hop Step Jump” or elaborated on the hostie reference in “Seijaku no Hostie,” something I’d already done in my Mugen Gakuen K guide as well), but that was all.

Anyway...the video is from Starlights. And it’s subbed! (By the subtitle font style, I’m guessing this is the @missdreamsubs sub). The Kakyuu-Ouhi Kourin version is good too though. And I definitely recommend the slightly creepy Senshi version from the Shin Kaguya Fankan, which was part of a duel with the villain actors over who could sing whose song better. Marina is creepy as HECK when she sings villain songs (but she does a good job!).

The only video I could find of the song alone (that wasn’t audio only or a fandub) is this fankan performance by Mars actress Honma Risa from the Marinamoon Final Fankan. As far as fankan performances go, I prefer Ado and Miki’s version from the 2004 Shin Kaguya Fankan personally. (Also, check out the Senshi actresses’ version of “By Heaven! Kami Nomi zo Shiru!” from that fankan. It’s scary how good of a bad guy singer Marina is). Risa just does ok.
